- At our #farm, we do controlled breeding with our cattle. We place our bulls with our cows starting around December and pull them out at the beginning of February. By doing this, we create a tight calving window in the fall. It is difficult to look at a cow and know when she will have a calf. If all of our cattle are bred in a 60 day window, then we know when to expect their calves.
When calves are born on our farm, we like to check them as soon as possible. When we check them we go ahead and give them an #eartag. Most cows go off on their own when they go into labor. We rarely see calves being born unless the momma cow needs help. Once the calf is born, we inspect the calf, see what sex it is, and tag that calf so we know who that calf belongs to. If the calf is a bull, we usually go ahead and band it (turning it into a steer). It is much easier and safer to do at an earlier age.
99% of our momma cows are very gentle and calm, even after delivering a calf. Occasionally, we have a #madcow that does not want us to get near her calf. This particular cow is new to our herd and has not had a calf on our farm yet. She did not want me getting close to her calf, but luckily I was about to catch the calf, tag it and return it to its momma. She had a heifer calf so I did not have to band this one.

That's what we like. Good momma cows that take care of their baby calves. She has turned out to be a really good addition to our herd.

Haha I was laughing myself when I went back and watched the footage after tagging that one. I always seem to end up in some sort of predicament. That mama was definitely protective of her baby. She has calmed way down now. She doesn't mind if I get around her newborn babies anymore.
this brought back memories. i was trying to feed our ladies and i didn’t realize one had a calve overnight, i got too close and mama charged me, i ran so fast into the electric fence that it knocked me out for a second 😅

At that time she was a new cow to our herd. She has since become much calmer and is perfectly fine with us tagging her calves now. She just needed a little attention and to know that we were not a threat.
@@FarmerHunt when someone kidnaps a human child.. the child becomes submissive because even a child knows kicking and screaming doesn't fix the problem of.. just like that cow she will adapt to having terrible things done to her.. this is pure evil.
I think it's only fair to give mama cow a small taste of the veal since she did give it birth.
Tip: Never mess with a calf, especially if his momma is right there!
Usually the cows don't bother us. We like to tag them and check them out when they are born

She’s a good cow! She had another calf a few months ago and she was calm as could be. She was new to our herd when we filmed that video and was pretty nervous. After a year of being around her and feeding her she has calmed down.

Mama's is milked all the time, is back to back inseminated and pregnant to keep producing the milk coming.
When she's not carrying her a baby calf ("being empty") and her milk levels go down. Is she kept on the farm? Unfortunately, not. It's the same route for her, as the baby Bobby-Calves!

Protecting their calf is a natural behavior and should NOT be punished or corrected
We do not ever punish or correct our cattle. 99% of our cows do not mind us checking on their newborn calf. Most of them are use to us from feeding and being around them. They are basically like pets. Occasionally we will have a cow that does not want us near her calf. Most of the times it is a cow that is newer to our herd and not yet use to us.
Fucking Cattle...i would've slaughter it on the spot...and the calf too..fucking annoying...all these cow and calf need to die for burger and steak..they should learn their places on this planet..human on this planet..for fuck sake

Our cows never attack us when we find there calves we tagged them when there a bit older but if u have a big herd of cows its best to tag them as soon as u can
Most of our cows are very gentle when we go to tag their calves. This calf was the first one we had off this cow. She was a little high strung. She had not been in our herd very long prior to calving. She has since gotten a whole lot better.

She needed something to help distract her. A lot of times I will have sweet feed for the mama, but that day I did not.
My dad and our hired hand back in the day used to tag Brangus calves. We had a few we called our "Harm" cows(4 of them), since they were our most protective mommas. Our hired hand pulled one of their calves in the cab of the truck and the momma was literally trying to climb in with him. He said her head reached all the over to the gear shift and was just yelling him for that baby. The "Harm" cows only stayed because they produced good calves.
Awesome story! It’s hard to get rid of a good producing cows and sometimes you just have to do whatever it takes. Especially to save a calf and momma cow. You never know what’s going to happen around here. Sounds like it was very similar for y’all.

You guys got to invest in a cow pasture AWAY from all those trees and danger waiting to happen to you and mom, We put our ladies in a pasture close to our barn when they are close to calving that way we can keep an eye on mom when birthing, if we need to help we can bring her in or if calf is having problems we can bring mom and calf inside, We give mom some pellets when we go near babies for say tagging, the older girls get use to it all sometimes going to that field on their own and love seeing those pellets they know they will get baby right back lol, Once mom and baby are doing well usually 1 week we then put them out in the reg pastures where the trees hills and streams are it's just safer for everyone thought I'd drop the idea after seeing this video lol I just found your channel and enjoying my time so far :)
We have some pastures like that for our heifers but most of our cow pastures have trees in them. We don’t really have any issues with them luckily though.
Even if we had a ton out in pasture this is y u always need some small bar pens, so u can channel & separate briefly 2 tag.
That may work for some but that just isn’t efficient for us.

Luckily we rarely have a cow act like this. I just happened to be recording when this one did. Usually we tag the calf on the ground or in the back of the gator but we rarely have to get on the gator ourselves.

This cow was new to our farm at that time. She has calmed down since then and doesn't mind me tagging her calves anymore.
I feel so bad for these animals. They don't know what's going on and they are so worried.
I know they get over it more or less once it's all done though. So that's good

Most of our cows don’t even think twice about us coming around and checking their calves. This particular cow had not been in our herd long. She now is just as gentle as the rest. We spend a lot of time feeding and taking care of our cattle and this really helps them understand that we will not hurt them or their calf.

I know most cows and calves don't get too traumatized by this anyway. It's just 15 +/- minutes of unease.
It's like watching your pet get their shots at the vet.

I completely understand. I have two young boys so I know what it’s like to be protective. That is why we strive to take the best possible care of our cows that we can so they do not get nervous when we are around their calves.

Probably should have with this one. I don’t usually have this much trouble with the cows. This one was a little different though.

The cows get treated very well. They just get a little stressed right after they give birth.
If I had friends close I'd be on the phone with one of them asking for help. Tagged and banded calves by myself once. It didn't end well.

I've tagged a lot of calves in my life.
Firstly, having a dog out there only makes a bad situation worse. We keep ours in the side/side, worst case we need em to fend off momma. Worst case. You are sending an animal that is already showing its fight in the "fight or flight" into murder mode with a dog. Your tagging would have gone a whole lot smoother w/ out the dog lol.
Speed/automation is also key. Nab that calf. Have your tagger, bander, and shots ready beforehand. Keep it between you and momma, less of you they see the better the first few seconds. Roll it. Work front to back or back to front. (I do front to back) tag, shot, band(if needed). Keep that one buggy door open to the side you are on. Back into it as things get warmer. I've seen cows that hunt you if they have a calf. Ones you gotta choke in the sagegrass before you can go rope their calf safely.. That cow wasn't too bad.. Hope the advice helps...
If yo have a stick or something like that or just about anything that makes a rattling noise the cow wold keep its distance.
I usually try to keep something with me to keep the cows back. For whatever reason, it wasn’t on the back of the gator that day. Lesson learned!

My cows would have come to you to run you over and not run away. Lol. And mine have horns. So I dont tag. I only have 3 females so it's not a big deal to tag.
haha don't want any cows coming after me with horns. Occasionally if we have one that is too aggressive we will wait and tag its calf later. That is pretty rare though. Most are very friendly.
Caleb Kruse I agree. Their hormones are going crazy and that protective instinct kicks in. A majority of our cows are so use to us being around them them that they do not mind us catching and tagging their newborn calf. Some, however, don’t want us anywhere near.

Sometimes we do. We also keep feed with us sometimes to help distract the momma. I didn't have any with me that day. She was new to our herd at that time also. She is much calmer now.

You did good catching the calf but you screwed up putting it in the bed of the gator Ida put it in the cab through passenger side and did my tagging and whatnot then which ever side the cow is not head butting you put it outside then back up. As many times as I’ve done it I never got treed on top of a cab and I didn’t get hurt either it’s different if you got help with ya but by yourself you gotta play it smart one screw up and bad things happen. You got lucky
We’ve thrown them in the cab before but had one that I thought was going to bust the windshield out. He was closer to a week old. Had a lot more strength. Usually we throw them in the bed and dont even get in the bed with them. For some reason this cow was not happy with me that day though.

The mirror of the truth When a mother gives birth in a hospital, does the baby stay right by her side the entire time? No! The baby is taken for full examination to make sure he or she is healthy. The same thing is done on the farm. The farmer does what is best for the animals. These animals are very well taken care of. Always have plenty of food, water and live in some of the best conditions. This is not animal abuse.

Arthur Dewith I should have given this one more time. That’s the first calf of hers that I’ve ever tagged. She was fairly new to the herd at the time. I’ve been around her and her calf several times since, and she is gentle as can be now.

We do. We don’t see them real often but we do run across them from time to time
My dude, invest in an atv, chase down the calf, lean over and pick up the calf and hold it on your lap and drive away a distance. Once a safe distance away tag calf, drive back to cow, drop calf off and drive away. This process should take you under 5 minutes.
I’ve got one and it works much better tagging calves. Especially in that pasture that has lots of woods and hills. It was in the shop getting some work done though.

All the dairy cows I’ve been around are just like pets. Very gentle. Most of ours are similar to that. We have a few that are not though.
Tranquilize momma. Then tag the calf. Chain the calf and make sure it don't escape

The tag is in the correct ear... You said the left ear when looking (the heffer's right ear. And you said the calf is a heffer
We usually do the ear on the left when looking at the face of the calf for steers and the ear on the right when looking at the face of the calf for our heifers. I accidentally stuck this tag in the left ear when looking at the face of the calf. Not a big deal though.

I hope more people see these videos, and I hope they are children. It makes it very clear that animals are fearful of humans and want to protect their babies from us. Maybe young people will see this and conclude there must be something wrong going on. Like why you insist on chasing the momma around the pasture, tormenting her and the calf, making them more anxious and fearful? The reasons aren't explained, but it's either you enjoy the pursuit, or momma needs to know who really "owns" her calf. Whatever the case, the bottom line is you want us to buy meat. But we don't need it. There are other options than sending both momma and baby to slaughter, where they both go in the end.

These cows and calves are 100% dependent on me for their well being. If a cow is sick she cannot tell me. If a cow is hungry she cannot tell me. Without me, these cattle would not make it. Just because the cow doesn't want me near her baby doesn't mean that I am in the wrong. When my children were born I didn't want them having to go back to the nursery to be examined, but I knew that was best so we allowed it. These cows live a very good life and are well taken care of. You know nothing about my operation.
