How I Grafted An Abandoned Calf To A New Mother Cow

  • In this video I show you how to graft a calf to a new mom. There are a few different methods of doing this but this has to be the oldest and probably the one with the highest success rate. I try and give as much detail as I can to help anyone that might be trying to do this for themselves.

    Excellent work on grafting the calf on. If you skin the legs from knee to body without slitting them you have a sleeve that you can put the leg through through do all 4 stays on with no twine . A pen for confinement would be good but so is company from other cows. I give you a A for effort and results.

    • @seanhill8543
      @seanhill8543 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That's how we skin them too. The hide stays on the calf really well that way.

      Thanks for all the suggestions! Since trying this myself I have seen other videos where they make the holes for the legs to go through. If I ever have to do this again that’s the way I will do it. I was continually checking the securement of the hide and stressing over it. A couple people have said to keep the tail on it also.

    Ya that is the only way to graft a calf is by using the dead calf's hide. I see someone else already mentioned it, but it is really important to keep the tail of the dead calf on the hide. Keep up the good work.

    I’ve heard of people cutting the hide off but never did it myself. I sure would if I had to. Great job on doing what’s best for your cattle. You may get some trolls about skinning the dead calf, I wouldn’t worry about that, you’re doing what’s best to for the ones alive. Unfortunately, calf’s die after being born. That’s life.

    I'm a city girl with no cow experience, but I've heard of this hide procedure before. The only thing that might help you next time is (and I don't know if this is even possible)...
    When removing the hide, don't slit the the arms and legs. Try to keep them as tubes. That way, when you put the hide on the orphan calf, you've got sleeves to put the orphan calf's legs into... Keeping the hide attached better. 💖🌞🌵😷

    Sorry to hear about the calf loss. The grafting is a very interesting idea. There is a youtube channel "sleep ranch" that has done this on video as well. The biggest thing I noticed is he cuts leg holes in the hide and he leaves the tail on. I'm sure by the time this video is posted you know if your plan worked, hope it did.

    I watch another ranch video called Sleep Ranch. I've seen them cut the hide off a dead calf and graft the orphan calf . They cut the hide off and cut slits in the hide to drape it over the orphan like wearing a jacket. I think you did an awesome job drafting. If you had a head locker, it might help with locking down the momma and help the calf suck. Overall I really enjoy your videos. I will tell others to subscribe

    Nice work on that grafting job, working with beefers surely has different twists and turns then working with dairy cows. The usual routine is to be with them at birth usually strip a bottle of colostrum for the calf vaccines and try and get the cow to clean or pass the placenta as early as possible leaving the calf with her for a few hours helps with that sometimes. Then take the calf away and then you take over the mother role. We use to save colostrum the first few milkings and give that calf a good start. It's an intense process lol to say the least we had hutches but it's a whole different ballgame raising heifers and milking and doing crops but it sure keeps the slack time down lol. You do a great job and your cows and calves show it. Stay safe take care

    • @LuthiRanchWY
      @LuthiRanchWY  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I remember our calf hutches when we were dairying. I was still pretty young to be too involved with the milking and calving side of things but it was my brother and I’s job to bottle feed all the calves. Sounds like it was quite the process though with the dairy cows.

    • @LuthiRanchWY

      Most the time it’s hard for a cow to support two calves. That’s why a lot of the times if a cow has twins, one of the twins will be pulled off and bottle fed or grafted to another cow. There usually isn’t enough milk for both calves.
