John Hancock shows some more of his favorite Dreamcast games that very few collectors know about. The visual differences in Bleem! are really quite striking... Hopefully that came across in the video well...
I dont know if your friend knew this or not but Zombie revenge is a spin-off of the House of the Dead franchise with a later section of the game taking place inside the mansion from the first HotD game, all the same im glad he recomended it, very underated game :3
I remember Bleem from back in the day, I also remember a company announcing a chip you could add to the Dreamcast that would allow you to play either PS1 or PS2 games. I don't know if this was the same company or not, but it would have been fun to see the differences.
chloesdada1 um its called a modchip n dreamcast had it begain with orginally lol thats why u can emulate n play dreamcast imports and cdr copys of games aka isos lol
Capcom did an amazing job supporting the Dreamcast. Just about every title they made for the system was a knock out. There were some great SNK ports on the DC, as well. The Dreamcast is still my #1 favorite console of all time.
As the only kid on my block with a Dreamcast, I hated playing my friends’ Playstations and N64s (even the PS2s) because the graphics were so bad I couldn’t see what I was doing.
I couldn't afford it at that time and I was nintendo nerd. I would really like to get the classics for that system now that I found a dreamcast from a thrift store find (twice!)
Finally someone recommending zombie revenge. I have been recommending that game since day one. I own a complete dreamcast library as well and that game is in my top 10 too.
Starlancer is my favorite Space Sim of all time, but I would highly recommend the PC version if you have an older system. The characters have full 3D models in between missions and it is AMAZING with a joystick. I remember getting so into the story and lived the feeling that my missions were making a difference in the war. I love these hidden gem vids! Keep em coming!
"hidden" gems ? I guess some of these games were never properly announced (or even released) in the US, though i can understand why Propeller Arena wasn't released, i'm in EU and these were all available (same for those in the first video), but i'm glad someone is bringing these to the Dreamcast owners attention in the US. Be sure to check out E.G.G., (Elemental Gimmick Gear), definitely one of the best DC gems out there.
Thanks to you and John Hancock for the wonderful and helpful Dreamcast videos. I'm just getting my first Dreamcast in the next day or two and I'm going to be needing to find all these good games. Seaman is one I'm actually looking forward to playing it just looks so weird. I watched your video on seaman and I'm really hoping I can get it.
I still have my original Dreamcast from 1999. I have a lot of games and a lot of great memories from it. Especially when I was showing off NFL 2K to people and how "realistic" it was at the time. :)
Another great episode. It was no surprise to see John mention Zombie Revenge. Watching this makes me want to ratchet up Gunbird 2 higher on my want list, looks brutally sweet. Great video guys.
I love JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, that series has been going on in Japan for about 27 years now. The Capcom fighting game of it is also for the original Playstation.
Timetraveler Ki I wish dude, but I'm pretty sure they would've done it by now if they had the intention to :( Unfortunately, it's highly unlikely now, especially since Sega's recent financial troubles and the downsizing :/
TheDistorted Yeah, they have financial troubles, because they never bring their cash cows to the west. Hnnnggggg! Another idea: They could release all the Saturn classics on Steam, like they did with the Mega Drive classics. Maybe also throw in some more Dreamcast classics. Instant money!
I'm also bummed that the remakes of the original Phantasy Star series were a) never finished, and b) not released outside of Japan. I really wanted them. Sega have always been terrible at business - only the quality of their products (and in some cases in recent years, their old reputation) kept them in the game. They need new management, particularly in Japan. I mean, Sonic Team pushing their flagship franchise onto an unknown/untested western developer was bemusing to say the least, especially since they had given fans what we had waited for - after so long - finally, in Colours & Generations. It's rather frustrating, they are my childhood in so many ways. I still have my Saturn & Dreamcast. I'm never selling them. Modern Sega need to wake up & do better, and quickly, or they will go the way of Atari :(
Bleem was an interesting history lesson, I didn't even know about it. My dreamcast collecting days are finally behind me, but I love the games I collecting for this system. It is just simply trying to find the time to play them all.
If you wanted to learn more about the history of Bleem, and the original PC platform of Bleem, this video's pretty interesting: LGR - Oddware - Bleem! Commercial PlayStation Emulator
I need to see what games I have, I unpacked my Dreamcast and Super Nintendo yesterday, getting out the Christmas Decoration. My wife saw it and said "I MISS SOULCOULIBER 2!". Will plug it this weekend!
its worth noteing that over half the DreamCasts library are Arcade ports because the Arcade versions ran on the same emulation engine so the experience is the same for both the Arcade and home experiences for better or for worse.
No doubt someone has already mentioned it, but after Bleem! was sued out of existence by Sony (even though the courts sided with Bleem! and ruled that they broke no laws, the years of litigation were enough to shut the company down) a hacked version of Bleem! came out that allowed running *most* PS1 titles on the Dreamcast other than the initial 3 only. It was great :)
***** If I'm not mistaken, Sony used a lot of legal loopholes regarding import/export laws to get LikSang shut down for exporting Japanese goods without permission, since LikSang were exporting Japanese PSPs before they were available anywhere else in the world. It was huge and a goddamn shame too.. the gamestore I used to work at imported a few JP PSPs and they sold out on the same day, on a Sunday no less and even at the shocking price of £250 each.
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is one of the most well known and respected manga series of all time in Japan; I highly suggest checking out fantranslations, as the official first 2 parts in the series were never officially adapted by Viz Media, the game is also available in HD now on the PS3 and I think Xbox360.
For the Half-Life on Dreamcast story: They had the complete game done and wanted to release it, but then people got upset because the Dreamcast version did not include any multiplayer modes. So the developers moved the release to include the multiplayer, so the game never came out, as the Dreamcast market was given up during the ongoing addition of the multiplayer. Blue Shift was developed exclusively for the Dreamcast by the way, but was released on PC (and Playstation 2, I suppose).
I recall in the demo of Out Trigger you COULD play in 3rd person. Which is odd, if they took it away. Thanks for the mention of Super Magnetic Neo, I've been looking for a "crash clone" for years! And that looked great!
I know that this video was made three years ago and some people probably mentioned this is Metal Jesus, but there is an unreleased version of Half-Life for the Dreamcast. It is a leaked version and is pretty much a complete game. Just burn it on a normal CD-ROM and put it into a Dreamcast. It would be fun to see you review an unfinished game on one of the most uncommon consoles there is. You could also compare it to the PC and the PS2 port of it.
I love my Dreamcast. Even though retro, it is allowed on the plasma I will be getting the VGA cord. There are some cool imports too. This was the System that made me fall in love with Rez. Rez is like all my favorite genres, and wraps it up in a neat package. The sound track is amazing! It never died in my eyes. I see it as a success. It was ahead of it's time, and was the model for future consoles.
After 2000 most stores were just trying to get rid of their Dreamcast merchandise cheaply. I remember in 2002 my local gamestore keeper trying to shed his load of Seaman on me, he was told me I wouldn't have to pay him much money becasue he was making me a special offer but I mustn't tell anyone
For people that don't know much about Bleem. its first start was on PC. You would buy the CD then install it and much like the Dreamcast version it did Up scaling. One thing to note is that it would not play Riped games and only works on windows 98. You needed a Voodoo Card (post nvidia days) and a good computer back then. Now most if not all of the free emulators out beat it today but back then it out beat the free ones for sure.
Well, I got to say that those were a really cool hidden gems, but it's also sad that we miss some other hidden gems for the DC because they never went out of japan, like Ikaruga, Segagaga, cool cool toon, cosmic smash (pretty awesome), etc. Good job by the way
Could have mentioned the unique Tamagotchi-like app for the VMU that came with Zombie Revenge. You get to improve your character with items found in the main game plaing a minigame on the Visual Memory Unit.
Great list guys! Starlancer can actually still be played online to this day. GameSpy still hosts the original server. The beta version of the Bleemcast emulator (the one that can play "all" PS1 games) was leaked online. You can download and burn it. Unfortunately it hasn't worked well with any of the games I've tried.
The only game I've found it worked smoothly with thus far is GTA, although I haven't tried many (as the majority glitch out). This is why that version didn't retail. The legal troubles that John referred too was that Sony put Bleem out of business via repeated erroneous lawsuits. Sony was the bully with large pockets.
Im just happy to have found a Dreamcast at Goodwill the other day. Bought it when it launched way back in the day and unfortunately, when you move or when a new system comes out, back then, you just traded it in, so that is what I did. But, over the weekend, I came across a Sega Dreamcast, with 4 controllers, all hook ups but no memory cards for $24.99, so I had to pick it up. Got it home and opened the disc tray and guess what was in there - Dynamite Cop! Also picked up 2 games for it as well
Outrigger was really fun. I bought it back when I was collecting dreamcast. I have played the arcade version one time. I found it at an arcade in detroit back like 10 years ago just about. I did like this hidden gems video.
The bleem story is pretty interesing. They did release a version that played all ps1 games on a computer, I'm surprised they didn't get it out for the dreamcast though. Apparently, while they ran into legal troubles, they actually won their cases in court to allow them to make their product, but the legal costs were too much anyway that the company went bankrupt.
Thanks for giving the Dreamcast the attention that it deserves. There are lots of great and obscure titles for the system. I hope that you guys do another episode with some of the others. I think that John's picks from the first video were superb. Several were favorites of mine. Outtrigger isn't that uncommon. It just came late in the Dreamcast's North American life (July 2001), so it's not a game that was released with much fanfare. It's about as uncommon as Sega Bass Fishing 2, which is to say it's still easy to find for about $10. Sega announced their plans to discontinue SEGA.NET in the very month of this game's release, so I never opted to pick it up. Who really wants to play a port of a (bad) Naomi arcade FPS alone? The online play was really the only redeeming aspect of the game. It was probably among the worst of SEGA's online games at the time. Alien Front Online was another one that suffered from Sega's plans to pull the plug on SEGA.NET. It was an enjoyable game that was ruined by pre-teen kids playing rap music through their mics. Everyone quit playing shortly after (SEGA had already announced the closure of SEGA.NET), and then SEGA shut down the severs about 6 months later. Many of these games didn't even support the BBA, which made things more annoying. Seaman - Leonard Nimoy was not the fish. He was the narrator. It later got a PS2 port. Bleem! was never given a full release for all games simply due to the technical difficulties in creating an emulator that could play all games at the time. This was the reason for the game-specific discs which included tweaks to optimize for a single game. There was discussion of various "Bleempacks" that would play numerous games, but never happened due to the reason mentioned above. It actually had nothing to do with the litigation from Sony. Bleem! for Dreamcast just ended up being a dead-end even after winning the court case. StarLancer was a great game. I played the PC version and really enjoyed it. Crave published several really good games on the Dreamcast (Super Magnetic Neo, Draconus, Toky Exreme Racer series, Bangai-O, and more). Here are some other "hidden gems" that don't get much attention. Bangai-O, EGG: Elemental Gimick Gear, Project Justice, Ooga Booga, Mark of the Wolves, Toy Commander, and the DC version of Test Drive LeMans.
Seaman was the biggest selling DC game in Japan! I couldn’t get into it. Outrigger was in arcades (I think they planned to make Arcade playable against Dreamcast- not sure), and it’s first person, but tap a button and it goes to behind/above your character. It’s a blast! Very Arcade- that’s why the maps are small but tight design and gameplay!
Awesome video Metal Jesus! Two games I like are D2 and Maken X both strange but fun. And the other great RPG besides Skies on the system Grandia 2. Lots of good memories with that game. Dreamcast will always remain a favorite.
Bleem! is also well known in the PC emulation scene for trying to sell a PSX emulator. Also, both the Dreamcast discs and the PC program ALLOW you to play legit copies... but neither were marketed that way. They were marketed to play "backups", which has been a euphemism for "pirated games" since time immemorial.
Blimey. A few people commenting that possibly weren't paying that much attention to "scene" when the Dreamcast was in its heyday. Bleem! was a big deal for the emulation scene but the guys soon realised that the expectations of making one emulator to play every game was a big call. Thus the slew of variants that starting coming out. VGS was another PS emulator around at the same time which faded into the background somewhat. DreamSNES was awesome aswell, playing DKC on DC was awesome.
You guys changed shirts. I appreciate the attention to detail. I been telling the wife for months now that I want to pick up a Dreamcast. Sure wish I still had my original one. Of course many of us are in that boat. I love me some SHUMPS!
damn i miss the Dreamcast, at one time i owned just about every U.S. released game for it...i had many long nights playing NFL2k and Chu Chu rocket online, alien front was alright but never really took hold online (not many people ever on to play) ....my gems would be games like D2, Tokyo Xtreme racer 2, Wetrix, and all the light gun games like Confidential Mission
It almost seems like they took the Neo Geo lineups and brought them over to the Dreamcast because it was so stunning. I bet programming on it would be kind of a joy too, as it is basically windows.
Star Lancer was an amazing game. And definatlly a game worth playing. I sadly don't own any of the other games mentioned, but I still own my DC version of Star Lancer, also there was a PC release of it as well.
Loved Starlancer. Perhaps the last great Wing Commander style game to come out (which was by Chris Roberts of WC fame) and i found it to be more fun on the Dreamcast than on the PC. Also Crave was one of the best third party developers on the Dreamcast, right up there with Capcom. Just proves you didn't need Electronic Arts to have a strong third party lineup. Dreamcast forever!
I love bleem! No one ever talks about it but its awesome. The programmers wrote some really funny stuff in the menus before you load the PS1 game... I don't know if they're worth what people are charging these days but definitely worth what I paid for them out of the bargain bin at EB Games back in the day.
Wasn't sure if you were aware, but Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is based off a manga of the same name that originally ran from 1987-2004. There is also a 26 episode anime series that ran just last year.
Really enjoying this series MJR. I love my Dreamcast, and my favorite game for it is ZOMBIE REVENGE! So I was very happy to see it in this video. I really want to check out Super Magnetic Neo, that one looks like a blast. Cheers!
I remember the whole Bleem! situation, as well as the atmosphere surrounding emulation of current systems in the late 90's. I remember being amazed that the DC could emulate the PS1 so well. I knew Sony would either sue them into oblivion, or buy them like they did with VGS for Windows/Mac and kill the product. The DC as a whole remains one of those systems that really was ahead of its time. I'm glad their are still people making games for it. That actually excites me more than the next gen systems. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is still a blast to play with friends via the VGA connection on a computer monitor. Great video btw. I enjoy hidden gem videos very much.
someinterwebguy There's no such thing as a piece of technology being ahead of it's time, that just says more about how many people were living under a rock. Look at how many people still credit the N64 for being the first system with 4 controller ports, I don't think that's exactly grounds for the Atari 5200 being "ahead of it's time" lol. Just sayin'.
Being "ahead of it's time" means different things to different people. To me, it means having features that may not be "new", but offer the ability to enjoy/experience games that current competition (in it's time) can't. The 5200 is a perfect example of having a lot of ideas, but executing them horribly. I personally believe that the DC would have done far better if SEGA didn't pull the plug out of panic. The 5200 on the other hand, had a myriad of problems that doomed it IMO. I understand what you're saying though. This is why new gaming systems don't interest me all that much. Too much hype, not enough substance. I'd buy a Vectrex-like system if it was released (and wasn't Neo-Geo X quality). :-)
I used to play Alien Front Online (online) religiously. It was a great online game for the DC. GT2 looks amazing on Bleemcast. I still have that disc, but I'd sold the Tekken 3 and Metal Gear Solid discs. I never played Tekken 3 using Bleemcast, but I did play MG with it. Metal Gear didn't look as impressive as GT2 did.
Euro jewel cases just look so much better and most of all easily distinguishable as a Dreamcast jewel case from a light-year away. I personally like the Euro Saturn box better too, although it does tend to be a little more.. fragile.
What are the odds of me watching this video just an hour or so after playing Zombie Revenge? Well, it is an awesome game and should be in everyone's collection that likes the Dreamcast :)
I loved Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Zombie Revenge. Fun fact: not only does Zombie Revenge tie in with House of the Dead, but there's an actual stage in the game called "The House of The Dead" that takes place at the same mansion! :-D
Metal Jesus, about bleem. I knew the author and supported him back when he was producing bleem, which was also a psx emulator you could use on your PC to play playstation games. His name was Randy, the same guy that made it possible for Doom on the Super Nintendo. Bleem ended up being a failure because Randy didn't produce updates to fix all of the bugs it had, and also had to deal with a lawsuit from Sony who tried to shut it down. Sony lost that lawsuit, as it also lost the lawsuit against another PSX emulator called ConnectX. The reason Sony lost the bleem case, was because Randy was using 100% custom code for his emulator, even for the playstation bios, so Sony had no foothold for a case against them. But bleem DID come out in stores, and I got a free copy from Randy himself, along with being one of the first to purchase one just for the hell of it. The one store I knew of that sold it was EB games. There were likely others maybe. They later created bleem specifically as a stand alone for Gran Turismo 2, Tekken 3, and Metal Gear Solid for the Dreamcast, which used DC hardware as a means of enhancing the graphics on those specific titles. Enhancements such as higher resolution (640x480), and anti-aliasing effects. That was a hectic time for us on IRC, where we hosted his channel, and supported him while having to deal with so many people who were upset about bleem being delayed from the initial release date it was supposed to come out, and not to mention the lack of support for updates and fixes after. Randy along with his business partner David have since then moved on. That was a long time ago. About 16-17 years. Oh well....
Hey metal Jesus, run your audio through a sound editing software and mess with the noise level a little, will add a lot to your videos, there are some free ones out there that you can google and find, love your videos man keep em up and John is the man, as a dude from Kelso he is a legend.
Alien Front Online had AWFUL voice chat. I still have fond memories of my Dreamcast and holy hell was that component just bunk. Still, the DC online was definitely my first experience with online gaming. With the keyboard and Quake 3 Arena you simply couldn't not go wrong. Fantastic console
For the record, Bleem got into legal trouble but actually won (as they should've) but Sony was basically throwing out lawsuit after lawsuit while also pressuring retailers into not carrying Bleem if they want to sell Sony articles. In the end the company went bankrupt, but undefeated. The moral? You're basically screwed if a bigger company doesn't like what you're doing, legal or not.
Thank you MetalJesus. I watch all of your videos. You review games in a sensible and down-to-earth way that affects a deep appreciation for your enthusiasm for all things related to video games. Please accept my thanks for your dedication and hard work. I am constantly entertained by your channel. You are very much appreciated!

mozzmarket I swear, you can look up ANY video and find dislikes. Some people are just unhappy! =(

I lol'ed.
The Dreamcast is hands down my favorite console ever.
Me too and I’m mostly a Nintendo fan, lol I’m so late tho.

agree, othrwise all i see is reviewers bashing that game. it was so awesome!
I just ordered me a copy of Zombie Revenge. Can't wait to play it.
Can't believe powerstone (forget if it was 1 or 2, but I think 2) wasn't included at all! It was such a fun multiplayer fighting game
they forgot both Record Of Lodoss War and Elemental Gimmick Gear. two VERY good action rpg´s
John Hancock is always smiling, his excitement and joy are contagious. Its always fun when he stops by.
Just getting into the Dreamcast and it's always awesome to find out about more games. Never heard of the bleem thing before.
JoJo is an AMAZING game on Dreamcast, one of my favorite 2D fighters actually.
Check out Dark Legend By Data East.
Outtrigger could be played in 3rd person as well as 1st person. Great game, great variety in levels and rock-solid 60 fps.
Love when you have John on the show!
John is such a wealth of knowledge and a really positive person to be around as well. Always a pleasure to hang with the dude!
Just bought my first dreamcast this video will serve me well in the future

Super Magnetic Neo looks really interesting =D Thanks for the recommendations!

Finally. I was wondering when you would mention JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Favorite Dreamcast game and had a very short print in NA.
Good job by the way
Bleem looks amazing, I can't believe I've never heard of it before!
Also picked up 2 games for it as well
nice, a couple weeks ago my friend just gave me his DC with 2 controllers so now im building my game collection. already have over 20 games lol.
Seaman face at the end! Must have worked because I have an unopened package from Ebay I received a couple days ago and it is Seaman complete.
Thanks! Hope to hear about ILLBLEED, RECORD OF LODOSS WAR, EVOLUTION, DRACONUS: CULT OF THE WYRM and other gems in forthcoming episodes!
Zombie Revenge is very difficult to finish even in super easy mode.
Games I have and recommend from these videos: tech romancer, skies of arcadia, sword of the beserk, giga wing, zombie revenge.
Bleem! is also well known in the PC emulation scene for trying to sell a PSX emulator.
It's Al from Home Improvement! He just needs a flannel shirt. :)
or the guy from American Pickers
Frankie! LMAO!!!!
You guys changed shirts. I appreciate the attention to detail. I been telling the wife for months now that I want to pick up a Dreamcast. Sure wish I still had my original one. Of course many of us are in that boat. I love me some SHUMPS!
How the heck did you get Gunbird 2 for 8 bucks!?? Garage sale??
I screamed out loud when I saw that price tag.
8 bucks? Pft I got every game in the entire DC library free.
@@joshua7426 Free? Pft I got someone to pay me to take their complete US dreamcast library.
I just ordered Super Magnetic Neo.. looked amazing! Kao the kangaroo is also kinda like crash bandicoot and for Dreamcast. Totally worth checking out.
damn i miss the Dreamcast, at one time i owned just about every U.S. released game for it...i had many long nights playing NFL2k and Chu Chu rocket online, alien front was alright but never really took hold online (not many people ever on to play) ....my gems would be games like D2, Tokyo Xtreme racer 2, Wetrix, and all the light gun games like Confidential Mission
oh man so many great Capcom games on the Dc
Many Capcom games ran on Naomi at the time so its no surprise.
Bleem was also an early PS1 emulator. It is one of the few that were ever commercially available.
Really enjoying this series MJR. I love my Dreamcast, and my favorite game for it is ZOMBIE REVENGE! So I was very happy to see it in this video. I really want to check out Super Magnetic Neo, that one looks like a blast. Cheers!
yes magnetic neo main gimmick is magnetic polarization - plus the game is HARD. good choice!

There's no such thing as a piece of technology being ahead of it's time, that just says more about how many people were living under a rock.
Zombie Revenge,Gunbird 2 is awesome,i was really surprised for Bleem and PS1 version of GT2 on Dreamcast,i never think about it
That Opeth poster you have is bad ass dude! You definitely know good music.
Excellent selection of dreamcast titles. Always wanted to get those bleem games. Awesome stuff.
All the best jay.
I personally like the Euro Saturn box better too, although it does tend to be a little more.. fragile.
Out trigger was the last game I had on the dreamcast. Love that game!
Thanks for posting this 2nd hidden Dreamcast gems video the day after Thanksgiving. This made my long boring day at work alot easier.
For less than the cost of one new XBone/PS4 console, you could buy a Dreamcast and an awesome library of games!
What are the odds of me watching this video just an hour or so after playing Zombie Revenge? Well, it is an awesome game and should be in everyone's collection that likes the Dreamcast :)
Pretty sure Alien Front was the first console game with voice chat. So now you know who to blame when kids are screaming at you on COD.
Have always preferred our European Dreamcast game cases compared to the American ones that were just normal CD cases.
Most memorable dreamcast game for me was dynamite cop. Brawler with lots of funny weapon pick ups.
I've got Gunbird 2 in my DC right now, just finished playing it. Great game!
i can't believe these videos are 7 years old!!!!
I unlocked every single character in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, I loved that game. Still have mine.
I wondered if Wild Metal would appear. I've watched all 3 of the videos. It's interesting how some games never released there but did in the UK.
Man, Dreamcast was a great console. Didn't know about many titles on this list.
You guys need to cover Seventh Cross Evolution. That is an underrated gem in my opinion. It's kind of like a 3D E.V.O. Search for Eden. Awesome stuff.
I had Bleem for PC, and could NEVER get it to work. Never heard about it on DC! Cool stuff!
0:17 American Dreamcast console with European controller.
Nothing entirely wrong about that, it'd actually work and all, but still kind of odd.
I was wishing to see Bangai-O among that games. That game needs more love.
Oh well....
k you won with zombie revenge - greatest game ever. something about it, it's got a magic to it - still wish sega would remake it gash dang it!
Never heard of Super magnetic neo, gotta check it out! Thanks
That part about Bleem is really interesting. I've never heard if it before. :O
I never knew Al Borland was such a Dreamcast fan.
I don't think so Tim
😂
Awesome video and in my tekken 3 game I had the Bleem disc and i didnt not know what it was till now thank u
zombie revenge been trying to remember the name of that game for ten years
