Ya despite trading a 1st and 2nd for Griffin Reinhart, the Oilers did very well at the 2015 draft taking 4 d-men out of 6 picks and seeing 3 of them become NHL players! He seemed to be the only GM at the time that recognized that the Oilers needed to draft d-men because the Old Boys Club management didn't seem to know this !
Shame they couldn’t get more out of those selections. Bear and Jones are obviously more on the 5th to depth-dmen type of players… But I absolutely adore Marino. Loved him in Pitt and still ridicule the Hextall decision to ship him away.
He had the right idea with Larsson. He's been a solid defensive RD, actually just what the Oilers could use right now. If he had extended with the team it would be considered a win.
And i know lucic didnt turn out good but at the time it was larson and lucic for hall and no one could of predicted the lucic downfall you make that trade still
@@maxrates Right idea, I agree. Chiarelli had hoped he could turn into a steady #2 and I think he’s managed that. Larsson has munched big minutes in Seattle over the past few seasons. Will be interesting to see how/if the addition of Montour and emergence of Borgen impact how Larsson is utilized. Admittedly, I don’t watch enough Kraken hockey. Regardless, the problem in Edmonton was a lack of defensive depth and talent. Disorganized systems as well.
@@kurtisheidt2249 Lucic deal was a risk. I think everyone knew it was going to bite them. But as I said in the video, it definitely happened FASTER than I expected. The contract Hall was locked-up on was also fantastic. So by comparison, I think it was an automatic downgrade.
such a bad time to be an oilers fan thru those 2 playoff misses after making playoffs in 2016-2017 we are in such a better spot now but every oiler fan should thank god peter chiarelli is gone
Oh yeah and dont forget, they basically passed up Matt Barzal for Reinhart, and then when Ebs and Barzal linked up in the isle, they had amazing chemistry
Made me so angry when I saw Ebs and Barzal lighting it up on long island, but the islander’s mismanaged and didnt protect Eberle in the expansion draft and the Kraken got him.
The funniest/most bizarre thing about that deal, is the parallels it screams to trading Tyler Seguin. Both players struggled through playoff performances. Sure, there were more red flags with Seguin…. But that experience wasn’t a learning point?
@@WhatsHappeningHockey I always thought that Chia was way too casual in trading top end talent ! Being a little more patient with guys like Seguin, Hall and Eberle instead of bouncing them out the door so quickly would have been good for both franchises !
idk why people dont talk bout this more by oiler F up by not drafting debrincat it obv easy say that now rather then back then but idk how u scout Mcdavid for a whole year see and not see this Debrincat kid ripping it on the same line as Mcdavid sure he small but u had to scout Mcdavid sure it no brainer but u dont see Debrincat and mcdavid ripping up together in juniors
@@SirManfly agree its a bit egregious. Oilers had to let him go, but maybe misplayed their hand in making so many signings. Ongoing trend in the NHL is to pay these young players early. Lock them up with the hope of development transforming the contract into a “steal”. Maybe the Oilers committed their money to the right players? Maybe not. Maybe Broberg emerges as a legit top 4 and that stirs regret? Maybe not. Time will tell!
@@sanpotkins4705 Feel for him as a person. No doubt a massive challenge to establish consistency in the NHL. But there were red flags before the trade which were seemingly ignored. A bad move.
CHiarelli was very good with drafting. His downfall was obvously trading and contracts.

Eberle for Strome - Strome for Spooner - Spooner on waivers = Eberle for nothing

And remeber, Ebs was our condolence prize for Pronger not wanting to play here. Makes it even worse.

Trading Eberle at his all time low value is debatably Chiarelli’s worst move with the oilers

Always a hindsight thing. I see your point for sure.
Eberle couldnt one time a puck to save his life near the end here whiffed on everything
I remember that !
Moving Broberg was super stupid
There's no way that the Oilers should have matched Broberg!! A 10 game or so playoff doesn't make the still unproven Broberg worth $4.5 mil/per !
