The 2017 draft has gone down as one of the deeper drafts in recent memory. So like last year we go back 7 years and review just how well some of these picks turned out. Follow me on Twitter: / varsitysens
Commenting to help you with your engagement. Clearly this video has a ton of effort put in, and I’m gonna be so proud to say I saw you before the blow-up :) I don’t regret a single minute I spent watching
As someone who's only been fully invested in hockey for a couples years these videos have been a great way to learn about lower lineup guys from teams I'm not super informed on. Keep it up they're a great watch!
Couldn't be happier to have Nico on the Devils. He has great character and leads by example. One day he'll make a mockery of any redraft that has him below #1, i truly believe that.
The past week and a half has been very impactful to several 1st rounders in this video - Marty Necas, Erik Brannstrom, Filip Chytil, and Morgan Frost all just got traded within a week of each other. Chytil and Brannstrom were involved in the same deal, both swapping teams in the JT Miller trade. As an Avs fan, I love what Necas has brought to the team so far, even if I still really miss Rantanen.
thank you for not shitting all over yammy, he’s been getting disrespected so hard these last two years and even tho he’s a decent player it’s so annoying seeing him get overlooked 😭
As a Flyers fan, you can fully blame Hextall for Nolan Patrick’s career. Nolan underwent hip surgery right before his rookie season, almost immediately after being drafted. This surgery was the same exact surgery Giroux and Gostisbehere had right before the 2016/17 season, where they both had their worst career seasons at that point. Patrick had this surgery, then had ZERO training camp, then barely played in preseason but then made the opening night roster… It was clearly all to sell the jerseys and tickets, I remember a poster that was spammed all of the WFC shop that was Giroux, Simmonds and Patrick on the poster lmao. It was all downhill from there. Had Nolan went back to junior for 1 more year, then made his debut in Philly in 2018/19 I guarantee you his career would still be going today.
2017 is such a wild draft. Touted as a very weak draft with Patrick and Hischier expected to be "good 2nd line centers" as the top 2 draft choices turned out amazingly with Hischier being NJ's first line center a few weeks into the season. The 2017 top 5 is (sadly except Patrick) one of the strongest top 5 ever. And NONE of them (except Patrick) was expected to be a top 15 pick at the start of the season which is bonkers to me. Also great talents later on. Dallas probably having one of the best drafts of any team ever.
Great video man, honestly I'm shocked that you dont have more subs. I've always wished there was more hockey content in the style we see from creators for other sports. I've seen a few really promising hockey channels on the rise lately and you belong right with them. You're a newer channel but already seem like youve been doing it for years. Hope you guys can push the genre of hockey content creation forward, hockey deserves creators like you all.
Tuned in last night fresh after your upload. Great stuff. Quick and to the point; snappy from player to player. Great little idea. Subbed and will stay tuned.
I KNEW the flyers should have picked makar.....patrick had a history of injuries............they threw the #2 pick in the toilet... thanks so much hextall..........
Cody Glass doesn’t seem well off after this past season, and Middlestat has proven himself to be a solid pick for a while now, definitely a TOP 6 player.
Such an underrated draft. Glad my Devils made the right pick. Anyone that had first was picking Patrick or him so I don't get too worked up missing out on guys like Makar, Miro and Elias. Had they gotten one of those guys then they most likely don't get Hughes so everything happens for a reason
really good video i see a combo of a ton of styles, i love your mix quality too, also i see so many ppl with hockey videos with tons of views but the channels have no subscribers, i think it might be time for me to make a 2018 caps retrospective
Would have loved to see the sens draft Oettinger if Dallas didn’t draft him. But knowing Pierre Dorion, he probably would have traded him before he hit his potential.
Always found it perfect that the 2 best players of the draft ended up on the 2 worst teams in 2017, even though they both dropped 3 spots in the lottery.
oof, you had it wrong with Necas and Carolina there 🤣 Otherwise, enjoyable videos, as I took a break from watching hockey between 2015-2016 to 2022-23 (except for the 2021 playoffs, my main team, Montreal, pulled a miracle and had Tampa lost in their game 7 to the New York Islanders, I think we would have gotten the name of team on that silver cup for the 25th time then). The heartbreak of seeing the team falling to injuries for almost half a decade after Price's amazing, out of this world 2014-2015 season, and getting injured for the entire season the next season after he had 12 wins in 14 games to start the next season, where Chris Kreider let himself fall with his full weight on Price during conference finals, when our backup goalie was also injured (Budaj) and we had to bring a guy from the AHL (Tokarski's first apperance), removing all chances of beating the Rangers and then losing Price after 14 games the next season, I gave up, so when I came back, a lot of those new faces, had been drafted in 2015 and later all over the league, took me a while to get to know who was who for a while when I came back in 22-23. BTW, yes, Nolan Patrick has such a sad story, in case he never comes back, he was lucky enough to sign NHL contracts that will secure his financial future and his children's and children's even if he didn't sign for that "much" as a new player who kept getting reset to zero when coming back from injury. I think he's the son of James Patrick, a great defenseman for the New York Rangers for the most part when I was a kid, there was like 25 brands of hockey cards and maybe I'm wrong, but I see so many ex-players from the 80s up to the early '00s who are sons and nephews of players I've seen as a kid in the early 90's, collecting hockey cards.
If there is any reason why Nolan Patrick won't be an absolute slam dunk pick at #2 overall GM Ron Hextall would know about it. Ya see Ron Hextall played his junior hockey for the Brampton Wheat Kings, the team Patrick plays for. So Ron has all these connections there. But not just that, Ivan Provorov also played for The Wheat Kings so the Flyers have been following the team closely since 2015. This is what we were told at the time.
Islanders trading away their pick because of the expansion draft was...oddly the right move. However, Garth Snow would've probably bungled this pick as well
I see a lot inspiration from urinating tree in your videos and I fw it
Absolutely. Hear it in his vocal delivery even. Unique in himself nonetheless though.
Urinating tree is trash
I watched his 2016 recap video and thought the same thing, hopefully this guy pops off
@@Brn934 U only don't like him bc he calls out ur sorry ass boys club
@@Brn934 insane take

the cal foote section 😭😭😭
Found my new favorite hockey channel.
Nolan Patrick is still young enough to make a comeback. Let's hope he succeeds.
He can t take a hit without getting hurt......
Yea he’s injury prone but it’s a sad story
If he can't make a comeback within a year or two from now, then he's not going to be coming back at all.
He’s not coming back
He’s 26 and hasn’t played hockey since March 24th, 2022. That’s 1008 days. His days of playing in the NHL are over.
Quality content worth watching
I love this channel
Couldn't be happier to have Nico on the Devils. He has great character and leads by example. One day he'll make a mockery of any redraft that has him below #1, i truly believe that.
He might be a good player, but he isn’t as good as Makar and some of the other players
He might be great and fit the team role perfect but he’s definitely not #1 overall level

been watching your videos for a while now glad to see your starting to get the recognition you deserve!
Love the P5 background music
I didnt know this channel, you have a new follower.
Lias Anderson was an bust but we got Will cuylle so i satisfied with its the pick for cuylle
Dude, you need more subscribe, your content is great ! More recap of past draft would be nice ! It's a fun format !!
thank you for not shitting all over yammy, he’s been getting disrespected so hard these last two years and even tho he’s a decent player it’s so annoying seeing him get overlooked 😭
This was a great video, hope the channel grows even more!
Perfect hockey video for the middle of the off season.
Really nice work on this video. The editing and the script moves along at a great pace.

Great video man I just subbed, keep going I can see you getting up there with Eck and Johnny Hockey
Another top tier vid. Thanks!

Love the Persona music in the background! Keep up the good work
You should definitely do this for every draft year!
Newly subscribed. Glad your channel is blowing up! Thanks for the upload man!
Bob MacKenzie's comments on Makar are crazy in retrospect. I mean, my Canucks have Quinn Hughes but given the choice...I still pick Makar.
Tuned in last night fresh after your upload. Great stuff. Quick and to the point; snappy from player to player. Great little idea. Subbed and will stay tuned.

thanks so much hextall..........
I would love more of these
ryan poehling's greatest mistake: getting a hattrick in his first nhl games with the habs...
In Bob Cole’s final game on the call. Couldn’t get a more electrifying debut if he tried
Stumbled upon this video. Great work! Subscribing! Very good quality and entertaining
as a Sens/Golden Knights fan I see the see the Stone trade as a absolute win
Great detailed video, looking forward to more!!
Hischer definitely looking like a first overall pick this season! Hopefully he can keep it up
Im here for the beautiful hybrid of hockey and persona music
What a great draft for the Stars
Kid is the new grifflix, great video buddy keep it up
“Kostin never found a place on Edmonton” broski what? He had 11 goals in like 54 games, and was a solid depth piece in the playoffs. He was good here.
yea hearing 2017 was 7 years ago is terrifying. but excellent video
Just noticed your stuff, you're pretty much just urinatingtree but better in every way. Keep it up!
7:00
He's also probably the best penalty killer on the team, aside from Compher, and brings great physicality, if only he can find his scoring touch
I love the usage of punch out and smash music
Based music choices 🫡
Love the Persona music. As a flyers fan, great song choice for Nolan lol.
Persona and nhl analysis I am such a dweeb and I feel marketed to
Cody Glass doesn’t seem well off after this past season, and Middlestat has proven himself to be a solid pick for a while now, definitely a TOP 6 player.
Necas can’t get offer sheeted. He elected for arbitration. Also Rod and Tulsky said in an interview today he would most likely stay in Carolina
Such an underrated draft. Glad my Devils made the right pick. Anyone that had first was picking Patrick or him so I don't get too worked up missing out on guys like Makar, Miro and Elias. Had they gotten one of those guys then they most likely don't get Hughes so everything happens for a reason
Yeah you’re right it’s easy to say now that Makar should have been the first pick but at this time it was Hischier or Patrick
Going into that draft I really wanted Nico but thought for sure they were gonna blow it and pick Patrick.
This is very grifflix like. But I love it. Keep it up brother
a hockey video with persona music is peak
really good video i see a combo of a ton of styles, i love your mix quality too, also i see so many ppl with hockey videos with tons of views but the channels have no subscribers, i think it might be time for me to make a 2018 caps retrospective
That Patrick pick is awful for Philadelphia.
this video is fantastic. subscribed 5 minutes in
Would have loved to see the sens draft Oettinger if Dallas didn’t draft him. But knowing Pierre Dorion, he probably would have traded him before he hit his potential.
Nico looks like a future selke trophy winner. He’s got that sort of Barkov type game.
Always found it perfect that the 2 best players of the draft ended up on the 2 worst teams in 2017, even though they both dropped 3 spots in the lottery.

Did he really get it wrong though? It doesn't matter what path you take if you end up in the same place
Really great vid keep it up
that player is right, makar is mid at defense but good at offense. heiskanen is the more all around defenseman
Pierre Dorian absolutely demolished Ottawa. Hope they turn it around this season!
As a Lightning fan, I was not expecting a reference to Lightning defenseman Nick Perbix. Nice.
If there is any reason why Nolan Patrick won't be an absolute slam dunk pick at #2 overall GM Ron Hextall would know about it. Great work man. Make more videos like this!
Here before you're a big ass channel
You can’t just sneak in Fire Emblem Engage music and expect me to not hear it
LEGOOOO
I was there. I have always had a close following of these guys. Shame some didn’t pan out
Hey man nice video
w for using smash and punchout music in the background
A healthy Josh Norris would feed families😭
How could you possibly feel bad for a guy as entitled and snobby as Patrick
Don’t think a team has ever drafted better than Dallas in 2017.
Great video
Who!
Islanders trading away their pick because of the expansion draft was...oddly the right move. However, Garth Snow would've probably bungled this pick as well
The anti-Vegas bias hit hard with that Cody Glass description.
I like the Punch Out background music!😁
You forgot to mention that EP40 won rookie of the year. 🏆
Poor Nolan man.
bandits legend, everyone from Brooks ab is a avs fan now
Great channel! And video! Lmk if you want to do a hockey podcast!
Damn, Mackenzie couldn't have been more wrong about anything ever. Makar is now arguably the best D-man in the league.
A vid well done
Nice vid!
Necas is the most underrated player in NHL. Carolina isn´t a team anyone talks about unless facing them lol.
If the Stars doesn't have a Cup but the Avalanche do (with their 2017 draft pick winning Conn Smyth) does that really mean the Stars won the draft?
Can you do other old years?
Mike Tyson's punch out music in the background. 😆
miro heiskanen and cale makar is like that one jeremy clarkson clip: I like this (makar) but this is better (heiskanen)
Poehling was never a cap dump lmao
Hawks traded down from 26 to take Jokiharju. Which means they could have drafted Oettinger.
Sleeping on liljegren, just because he’s not the high end offensive player people expected, he actually has great steady 2 way play
How did detroit not take Nick Suzuki
PERSONA MUSIC USED
PERSONA MENTIONED RRAAAHHHHHH
2015 draft next?
Makar amazing, 3 teams kicking themselves
Why would the Devils be kicking themselves? They got a complete 200 foot player who is also one of the best Faceoff guys in the league.
Please do 2015 next
