Dorion has had some terrible misses, but I think the team is in a very optimistic spot. We'll see how this comment ages after the season - lol.
The core is locked up. Zub was an amazing pick-up and is our best stay at home D right now. Batherson is a 25+ goal scorer just under 5 million for another two years after this season. A lot of people weren't sure about Sanderson at #5, and he's our best offensive defenseman already. Pinto and Greig are solid depth forwards, and the blueline has young guys like Kleven who are now NHL ready. Hell, a lot of folks were saying Ottawa should draft Zadina over Tkachuk (on draft day, not in hindsight) and obviously that would have been a disaster.
For me, the goaltending management has been his garbage under his watch, but when you look at how exciting this team is, a lot of it was done under D's watch.
We'll see how things pan out.

Ottawa isnt making the playoffs this year... the Atlantic has Florida/Boston/Toronto finishing 1-3 in one order or another, and which wildcard team from last year took a far enough step back for Ottawa to overtake them? There was a 13 point gap between them and Washington.... they werent even a .500 team... its VERY rare a team can turn it around so quickly, adding Ullmark was a great move, but beyond that they really didnt address team issues and teams like New Jersey and Detroit are strong contenders Ottawa would have to leapfrog to make a spot, and thats assuming Washington or Tampa massively regresses...

You’re really lacking some contextual information here as far as “inheriting” this squad. Dorion was the Sens head amateur scout for a long time previous to be hired as their AGM for 3 years and then their GM.
It’s well known around Ottawa that Dorion vouched for some of their best picks in his time as head scout between 07-14. When he was their AGM, he ran scouting, while now disgraced and convicted sexual harasser Randy Lee ran Belleville.
Dorion was a terrible GM because he sucks at evaluating pro-talent and his push in for Duchene, while great for me as a Avs fan living in Ottawa, is what sealed his fate as a bad GM. Anybody that actually knew hockey saw Stone and Karlsson carried that team. They had a bunch of ok depth pieces, Andersson was their only reliable goalie because they suck at developing goalies, and Ryan played the playoffs of his life.
Dorion is a great amateur scout, a good AGM, and a terrible GM. Had he been left as an AGM that ran scouting and Ottawa found a GM that could evaluate pro-level players and properly size up that team, Dorion would still be considered a good hockey mind among people that pay close attention to secondary management pieces.
