There is no excuse for what Jeannie had done. But Helen bullying her daughter and the bizarre detail with the broom handle just makes me wonder in what way Helen used to bully Jeannie´s kid. Dangerously violent kids exist (personal experience) and we haven´t heard anything about Helen's family background.
No matter what kind of bullying she did to her daughter...you still cant let her get away with murdering her and violating her with a broom handle etc....both are wicked. Two wrongs do NOT make a right.

Muse Ingenue I used to be a police officer before I had my three kids. We lived in a wonderful town called Homewood outside Chicago and I talked to the other parents and warned neighbors without kids and we had screaming practice. I would go over all the things to do to stay away from or escape from "bad guys". They got to scream their little heads off (something I did NOT allow in play) and practice running to the nearest houses etc. They had fun while learning the safe things to do. I've done it now with grandkids too. And what the other person said about strangers not necessarily being the dangerous ones is absolutely true. I know this from personal experience.
I similarly told my daughters not to accept sweets from strangers. My elder daughter told me that her younger sister had taken a sweet offered by an elderly couple we could see sitting on a bench (who obviously had no nefarious intentions) but that she had not. When we reminded my younger one that she had been told not to accept gifts from strangers she replied "I did not know they were strangers - I had never seen them before". Make sure that your kids know what a "Stranger" is.
Surprisingly, as an Aberdonian myself, I'd never heard of the case until stumbling across this video. Good work Brief Case - really informative and detailed.

@Barb Smith did you mean "I don't think justice was severed" meaning that because Mrs. Donald was given a life sentence (vs hanged) so justice prevailed after all? Or did you intend to type served but it auto corrected to severed? If you meant served instead of severed why don't you think justice was served? It was a vicious and horrific crime against a child but it sounds as though that child was a very nasty brat. I can see where a parent might snap after waitressing their child being regularly bullied. Little Helen was a bully and seemed to treat The Donald family very badly. This is NOT an excuse to murder a child but it is an explanation. Regardless, isn't this Brief Case good? I think he does an amazing job bringing old cases out of storage and into the light for all to learn from
If she was getting released to care for him, it would suggest that nobody else was going to do it. Perhaps the prison thought her guilt was doubtful, too.
No matter what a brat the child was, it was evident that she had been brutally molested while she was alive and then killed. No child should endure that. There was no justice here.
Brief Case, I must say, I've been listening to you for some 6 months now, and I've become very fond of you. You have your own style, your own delivery, and you remind me a lot of old time radio announcers of murder mysteries like The Black Museum. Keep on keepin' on, and I'll catch you for the next . . . I read up on this, Helen was apparently a bit of a horror as far as kids go. She screeched insults at the neighbors & apparently targeted Mrs. Donald. The parents did nothing. One day Mrs. Donald slapped Helen after she’d called her some vile names. It is reported that Helen stopped the verbal abuse after that, but that bad feelings continued to seethe between the families.
Spiritual Truth Seeker yeah it’s certainly horrible to kill a child who has their whole life ahead of them but I feel like this was not the true side of the woman who committed the crime.
Spiritual Truth Seeker at the risk of seeming cruel, the kid was an inbred- looking nightmarish brat, i was routing for Jeanie to be found not guilty. glad she got out early.
@@ashleynicole3756 - Your comment is extremely disturbing. I can't believe you're making excuses for this woman and actually wanted her to be found innocent. I've been around some horrible, bratty, and sometimes downright hateful children in my life. Never once did I think I had the right to take their life. Let alone beat and rape them with a foreign object. And you're saying that the child looked inbred. Her looks have nothing to do with the fact that she was an 8 year old child who was sexually violated and brutally murdered. What the hell is wrong with you?
Very shocked....that a woman and mother could do that to a little girl makes me think she was unhinged in some way...and then to be released to look after I’ll husband is incredible! She should at least have gone back to finish her sentence for that awful crime ...unbelievable!! ☹️☹️☹️☹️

I listened to this after the Canadian case. I absolutely love the older cases 💛 your research & narrating is spot on 😊... Have you heard of the The Mary Rogers Case? It's such a fascinating story ..you should definately do a video about it X
I notice from the comments that everyone assumez she was guilty. I'm not so sure. It could well have been the baker or any number of other people. As for the bacteria, the kid lived one floor up in a crappy building. Bacteria could have made its way through the floor boards. And some sexual attackers use foreign objects to penetrate rather than having intercorse with the victim. And a blood group is farm from exclusive to one person. I think the investigation created more questions than answers.
It is junk science. Forensic experts now say that a person's hair can or can't be excluded as a possible match. Without a follicle and DNA it can't be guaranteed as a match.
Ill be honest I was only half paying attention but the tone of the story almost made it seem like Jeannie was convicted and shouldn’t have been. It’s a really far-fetched for me. Seems like the investigators just made everything fit so they could convict.
I think they needed a lot more evidence to convict this woman beyond a reasonable doubt. Neighbors who don't get along is nothing new. These days cameras and DNA would likely have acquitted or convicted her. Since she lived relatively freely for life, I hope she didn't commit the crime.
Could be Helen just went too far and Jeanie’s daughter pushed her but given the sexual aspect it could be Helen bullied a younger boy and his big brother decided to go after her 🤷🏽♀️
They said Helen was much bigger than Jeanie, which made it easy for Helen to bully the littler girl. It also explains why a sensitive mom might feel an inclination to stand up for her daughter.
Dolores Reynolds Yes, but murder? I mean if her daughter was being shot at, I could understand retaliation, but violating her sexual organs and strangling her(
@@annabelgrace1267 Maybe that bully was doing something sexual to her daughter and she put an end to it, simply pestering the family I don' t think would make someone snap but something more serious might.
The bullied girl was only 6 years old and far too small and knew nothing of sex. As most still hid that aspect of life form children and female ones the most. Its a Wired one though.

I love the thoroughness with which you do your research.Mostly I've been hearing so many in the 19th century where poison or axe have been the weapon.Thank you for an insightful story
There's absolutely no evidence to convict this poor woman. Clearly justice was not done. The whole case centred around rare microbes household dust and hair found in a flour bag? While the press kept saying it "proved" that a woman could commit crimes as terrible as a man? Seriously? In my home town of Perth in Western Australia we have had three people recently exonerated of murder after spending years in prison. If the wrong person is convicted then justice isn't done.
Also blood typing was in its infancy. They found blood that matched Helen, what type was it? And then what blood types were the Donald's family? They only knew four types at the time as Rh factor was not discovered until 1940. With O being the most common type world wide and A being right next to it (with modern estimates of over 70% of the population being of those two types), we cannot be sure that the blood found was Helen's and not a member of the Donald family.
You don’t know for sure if she’s not guilty to be saying poor woman what about that poor child who was brutally murdered, if you feel for her more not knowing if she’s actually innocent, instead of the child who lost her life then maybe your a monster as well
Whilst I agree with you that this evidence sounds a bit weird but don’t forget that forensic science was not as advanced, in fact it was in its infancy, and therefore can be a bit haphazard and easily confused by a clever barrister X-examining an expert.
I love your stories Brief Case. I've never used my head phones as often, now they're in even while I do my housework😀. I've only recently discovered your site, so i have hundreds of stories yet to listen to... You've become my invisible friend😁. Thank you so much.🌈 I'm always astounded by the extent to which the police went to catch the murderer in olden times, even retaining evidence and matching it to crimes committed years later. Without the benefit of forensic science, just good, intelligent sleuthing. It would be so interesting if any of the evidence gathered in these cases survived and were examined with today's forensics.
I enjoy your narration.... it's incredible how many people seem to narrate without any sense of understanding the content.... or they are just really poor readers...... it's refreshing....!
I'm new to this channel and have been binge watching all your videos lately. I wanted to comment on this one in particular, even if you don't get a chance to see it. When I was studying Administration of Justice (a course in the US) and Criminal Justice, I had the fortune of knowing a former police officer, investigator and teacher. Who explained that when women kills like this, or becomes serial killer, a women can actually be far more dangerous, enjoy torturing their victims more, and are often more horrific in general than male killers. Yet even to this day, the courts and juries, look at them with pity, poor woman, what did she go through to make her this way, poor woman she really couldn't have done that, she reminds me of my mom, or my sister, etc. and, a certain pass is given. It is sad the level of flat out manipulation, terror and murder a woman can get away with.
Hello, That is very Interesting. I am more of a Criminal Historian than Physiologist so all this type of information is really good to know & I am now thinking of all the cases I know (not necessarily murder cases) where Women maybe got a light sentence.

This is another case where I was surprised she was convicted. The evidence then compared to knowledge now was pretty iffy. She would never have been convicted today on that evidence.
The Scots are a very well educated people and have had full literacy since the 1500s. By the time of this case they already had a long history of collecting scientific evidence. Edinburgh University also had a long established history of assisting the police with investigations. For example Professor Joseph Bell was already frequently called in by the police when Arthur Conan Doyle met him in 1877. Prof Bell became the model for Sherlock Holmes and even looks like the Holmes described by Doyle in his books.
Tamas Marcuis that doesn’t matter - they didn’t have DNA analysis back then and “positively” identified evidence using methods that we know today to be unequal to that task
Having been a victim of bullying many times, I think "little Helen" was cruisin' for a bruisin', & her own parents directly contributed to her death by letting her torment, bully, & abuse the neighbors. Not that that excuses the enormity of murder, but it certainly goes some way to explain. What if Mrs. Donald merely meant to grab Helen & shake some respect into her & was a little too rough due to having (understandably) lost her temper? They didn't know about shaken child syndrome back then, & once you have a dead child on your hands...
You would have to shake an 8 year old for a really long and enraged time to cause murder ! Her mother was just upstairs and you would think she would have heard her child's screams and cries ! I think she was most likely beaten swiftly, then the Sexual Assault/ Rape was done to a barely conscious child (sick, sick woman to do this) and then she was suffocated to finish it all ! She only served a few years. Justice is never served here on earth ! The only True Justice Lives with God !✝️ PS. Very sad for all involved ! Two people lose their child to murder. Two people lose a wife, mother, family unit and one man stands accused of Rape and Murder which the mother of his child committed and would have stood by while they prosecuted and hung him ! Bloody Hell !
She wasn't shaken... she was strangled and either before or after her death this woman considered her next move and violated that child's body. Pre-meditated. She then fed the family the bread Helen had taken home. Probably thought 'ah well waste not, want not!!' That, to my mind is callous. She is an adult and should have been able to control her behaviour... no excuse..and since she couldn't she should have served her full sentence.
This is horrible. She murders this little 8 yr old girl and IS found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Yet does not serve her sentence!! That's NOT justice.
I've read about this case. Helen was a vile child, always verbally abusing the Donalds. She bullied their daughter, kicked at their door and screamed abuse at all of them. The police theory was that Jeannie opened the door as Helen kicked at it, Helen started shouting rude names at her and she snapped and started shaking her. Helen's condition caused her to pass out and appear to be dead so Jeannie panicked and faked a sexual motive to cover the crime up, when Helen came round during the assault, she was killed to stop her screaming. Her husband probably discovered the body under the sink and dumped it outside.
Yep she did it,she snapped as Helen used to call her coc onut on account of her frizzy bushy hair, she grabbed her round the throat,Helen fainted on account of her condition stated, the woman then panicked thought she'd killed her and decided to fake a rape,as she did so Helen woke up and screamed, leaving no choice but to kill her,Helen proved heavier than anticipated when dead, hence left nearby
Thanks for the case from my home town BC. Never heard of this case . Its before my time. 2 accent corrections for you though. Granite is pronounced Gran nit and Urquhart is pronounced Urk art. Other than that awesome story as always. : )
Twinkie; I thought the same thing. Also; where were her parents while she was harassing that family? I'm not making excuses for Jeanie-- just wondering why Helen's parents didn't make her stop acting like that.
Yup. I agree. Not all children are innocent. They can be vicious little things. They are people too. I remember thinking that, very clearly, when I was 7 or 8. I think adults just forget being a kid, and the how brutal the can be sometimes. Still, I don't think that justifies sexually abusing or killing a child.
Not happy with the end she should of gone back to prison after her husband death not live her life till death the little girl did not get to live her life so why did she .:(
That was wrong to let her go for the sick husband, as she did this horrible crime; he could have had others to take care of him. I'm against killing, in my opinion she should have been rotten in the prison! Thank you, for your great work as always.
I can't stand hearing about little girls being raped and murdered. The cops come off as total dolts in this, but you don't expect women to sexually assault little girls.
Well, but the story says that the lady kill the girl and bruised her parts to look like the crime was sexual. I believe that she kill the girl for revenge and damaged the girl parts to divert the crime to a man. The way you express yourself sounds like the lady rape the little girls for pleasure and kill the girl to eliminate proof. This case has nothing to do with little girl sexual abuse but with assassination motivated by revenge.
Omg 8 and sent out of the house I’m so paranoid that I don’t even let my 16yr son walk anywhere unless I’m with him so scary how we could possibly live next door to sick people 🤔

This begs the question, "What is Justice ?" If justice is serving an arbitrary sentence, then justice was not done. However, if justice is rehabilitation, no recidivism, and penitence...as we normally think it should be.... then we can conclude justice was served. The most thought provoking video yet. Thank you for presenting this one and asking this most important question.
With the evidence and forensic science as it was at that time i believe the arrest was correct. It wpuld be interesting to find out if her daughter was ever abused, being a female perpetrator and such a high profile case I doubt we will ever know. Regardless of the child being a brat or quite possibly autistic/asperges or ADHD would be a modern diagnosis, she did not deserve to die the way she did. Justice was not served when she was a) allowed to nurse her dying husband or b) allowed to remain free after his death. If police got it wrong and arrested the wrong person well justice sure as shit was not served.
The rage that builds in you when you are bullied is absolutely white-hot rage. How many times did Jeanie comfort her crying daughter, her terrorized daughter, without being able to actually defend her? Then here comes Helen the asshole and kicks on the door or bannister again to let terrorized daughter know that her tormentor is passing right outside. I bet the mama strangled her in a red-blind rage and then after the passion subsided, did the “sexual assault” to cover her tracks. Everything about this makes sense to me. I think Justice was served for both Helen and Jeanie.
I know I wouldn’t have participate to the search of such a brat if I would have been there. The parents of the little monster should have been prosecuted for it was their lack of education provided to their child, that caused the death of the little bully. The duty of a parent is to make sure their kids will be part of the solution, not of the problem.
I feel the same - of course the murder is terrible, but it would be interesting for modern crime experts to put fresh eyes on this case & get their opinions.
Jeannie Donald's flat was, as of last week, up for sale. No mention of its history in the estate agent's brochure! The building looks exactly the same today as it did back in 1934.
@@BriefCaseOfficial Coincidentally, the last man to hang in Scotland (Henry Burnett) committed his murder (in 1963) just 75 yards or so from where Jeannie Donald committed hers. The area has barely changed since those days. All the streets and tenements are exactly as they were then though it's mostly students who inhabit the dwellings now. It is odd to walk by, look up at the respective flats and consider what happened in each of them.
Honestly...I felt terrible for the Donald's. I can see how if a little girl was being constantly bullied by another girl, who took every opportunity to harass the family as a whole, the mother of the bullied girl might snap and be driven to an act of non pre meditated murder. It was essentially manslaughter not murder, so the charge she was convicted on was wrong from the start. I believe all these factors played in to why she was released.

If she was getting released to care for him, it would suggest that nobody else was going to do it. Perhaps the prison thought her guilt was doubtful, too.

No matter what a brat the child was, it was evident that she had been brutally molested while she was alive and then killed. No child should endure that. There was no justice here.

what if, Helen's parents (The Priestleys) killed her because they were tired of her issues and framed the Donald's to get rid of them too?
Forensic evidence and literally all logic in the case says otherwise, but you do you.
It'd be some twist!!
You did some mental gymnastics and fantasy work there
The cases with women are especially chilling! I can't understand their behavior.
You honestly have the perfect voice for historical murder videos!

I’m sorry but Helen sounded like a complete nightmare, and then to hear the parents did nothing. It’s no wonder Mrs. Donald snapped.

Nope it sure wasn't 😟
But what about the hair match?
It is junk science. Forensic experts now say that a person's hair can or can't be excluded as a possible match. Without a follicle and DNA it can't be guaranteed as a match.
@@museingenue9347 Living in such a packed building the surprise would be NOT having that hair there.
Ill be honest I was only half paying attention but the tone of the story almost made it seem like Jeannie was convicted and shouldn’t have been. It’s a really far-fetched for me. Seems like the investigators just made everything fit so they could convict.
Dean Kirby As stated above, junk science now disproved
I think they needed a lot more evidence to convict this woman beyond a reasonable doubt. Neighbors who don't get along is nothing new. These days cameras and DNA would likely have acquitted or convicted her. Since she lived relatively freely for life, I hope she didn't commit the crime.
Maybe it was Jeanie’s daughter who killed her because of the bullying and mom covered for her ?
Could be Helen just went too far and Jeanie’s daughter pushed her but given the sexual aspect it could be Helen bullied a younger boy and his big brother decided to go after her 🤷🏽♀️
They said Helen was much bigger than Jeanie, which made it easy for Helen to bully the littler girl. It also explains why a sensitive mom might feel an inclination to stand up for her daughter.
Dolores Reynolds
Yes, but murder?

I,agree with you 100%.But,if they did, they should go the exact way,the victim did.
You don’t know for sure if she’s not guilty to be saying poor woman what about that poor child who was brutally murdered, if you feel for her more not knowing if she’s actually innocent, instead of the child who lost her life then maybe your a monster as well
lovelyrosebw Yes I think there was other evidence that was mentioned, enough to convict.
lovelyrosebw she’s probably a feminist pos Australia is full of them
Great as always! Thank you for all your hard work.
Lol dust? A bacteria that makes you faint? The evidence was shaky at best.
Whilst I agree with you that this evidence sounds a bit weird but don’t forget that forensic science was not as advanced, in fact it was in its infancy, and therefore can be a bit haphazard and easily confused by a clever barrister X-examining an expert.
He was referring to a strep infection or other bacteria in her blood that will always be present and affects the heart valves which causes fainting
@@HeyNurse69 Even that eval is suspect.

How sad... as a mother can’t imagine the heartache this family went through.
The child's blood in their house and the same type of bag the dead child was found in? If it happened today they would get her with forensics and DNA.
Today, she'd probably be convicted of manslaughter rather than murder.
same!
The only True Justice Lives with God !✝️
PS. Very sad for all involved ! Two people lose their child to murder. Two people lose a wife, mother, family unit and one man stands accused of Rape and Murder which the mother of his child committed and would have stood by while they prosecuted and hung him !
Bloody Hell !
Lp
She wasn't shaken... she was strangled and either before or after her death this woman considered her next move and violated that child's body. Pre-meditated. She then fed the family the bread Helen had taken home. Probably thought 'ah well waste not, want not!!' That, to my mind is callous. She is an adult and should have been able to control her behaviour... no excuse..and since she couldn't she should have served her full sentence.
Really bizarre case. Enjoyed. Thanks!

I cannot believe she was just let go like that. It was obviously premeditated.
The young girl deserved punishment for taunting the mother and daughter. The mother snapped as anyone could.
@kmn100 : Exactly !!
Justice wasn't done. She took the life of an innocent child. That's a Damn shame🤬🤬. Boy this one got me heated. Lol.. But, none the less. Good one, 😷
Aa0
Yep she did it,she snapped as Helen used to call her coc onut on account of her frizzy bushy hair, she grabbed her round the throat,Helen fainted on account of her condition stated, the woman then panicked thought she'd killed her and decided to fake a rape,as she did so Helen woke up and screamed, leaving no choice but to kill her,Helen proved heavier than anticipated when dead, hence left nearby
As we know today from criminal profilers, that the killer of a child is usually known to the victim and lives within a 2 block radius of the victim.

Twinkie You’re “just awful” and disgusting.
Yup. I agree. Not all children are innocent. They can be vicious little things. They are people too. I remember thinking that, very clearly, when I was 7 or 8. I think adults just forget being a kid, and the how brutal the can be sometimes.

I agree no justice for the little girl!! That's tragic :-0

Hi, I'm going backwards, and watching some older ones again , ty. And hitting like on ones I missed to do so ! Oops and sorry ! Be well. ☮️☯️
White-hot rage is how i feel too, after listening to my neighbors music for 12 hours on a work night😖. Just saying, i think i understand that.
I know I wouldn’t have participate to the search of such a brat if I would have been there. The parents of the little monster should have been prosecuted for it was their lack of education provided to their child, that caused the death of the little bully. The duty of a parent is to make sure their kids will be part of the solution, not of the problem.
Desperately catching up on your videos. Must have done some serious research. Admire you for that.
I am not sure what to think, since they didn’t conclusively prove she murdered the child.
I feel the same - of course the murder is terrible, but it would be interesting for modern crime experts to put fresh eyes on this case & get their opinions.
Of course they did! She was found guilty and sentenced to death.

Jeannie Donald's flat was, as of last week, up for sale. No mention of its history in the estate agent's brochure! The building looks exactly the same today as it did back in 1934.
Very Interesting I will see if I can see it on line :)
Most disturbing story Brief Case, thanks for making my lunch hour intriguing....😉
There was no justice served for either the victim, little Helen, nor her murderer Jeannie! Sad situation for everyone involved :(
After her husband passed she should have been put back in jail, that wouldn't happen these days.
