      For that reason, the constant striving to "do better" despite great hardship, I may well relate better to Hannah than to many other people described on this channel (I haven't had a very easy trip through life, either). That, in turn, makes her murder even more offensive.

      Most of us have our weaknesses, or our blind spots. I think Hannah's was that she was looking for love and she was a good, decent person who assumed that others were the same. Con artists can spot those weaknesses and exploit them and, sadly, that's what happened.

      I suspect, though, that there were a lot of cases in those days that went completely under the radar. While bodies aren't all that easy to dispose of (at least, according to my reading, I haven't tried it for myself), time, isolation and scavengers can go a long way, especially if no one is actually looking for the body.

    Good morning Brief Case. This poor unsuspecting woman, believed everything this evil man told her and did what he asked her to do. How can someone be so cruel and deceitful and take advantage of another person this way? All she wanted was a new start in life someplace different and instead lost her life for believing the words of a man. I'm glad that the other woman was punished also, I'm pretty sure she knew what was going on and she obviously benefitted from the crime.

      The thing is, during these times, it was very easy to die, between the atrocious work conditions, cholera, tuberculosis, being naturally poisoned by substances present in paint/wallpaper or adulterated food goods. Infancy death rate itself was gigantic. Also, forensics science wasn't nearly as advanced as today.
      So yeah, the authorities were more dismissive of sudden deaths, then.

    So many people died at a young age back in the early 19th century so the fact that Greenacre said he had been widowed three times wouldn’t have aroused suspicion in Hannah and would have tended to inspire sympathy in her which it clearly did. In spite of Greenacre’s protestations of innocence he was clearly guilty, no one else had a motive and Hannah’s belongings were found in his possession so his failure to confess showed a total lack of remorse. Sarah Gale undoubtedly knew of Hannah’s fate although she probably wasn’t involved in the murder. Both deserved the punishments they received, poor Hannah did not deserve what happened to her. There were many things that were unpleasant about life back in those days but at least they put the interests of the victim first.

    In 1837 two troopers from the NSW Corps were indicted for theft. They were later outed by fellow soldiers for planning to become convicts to increase their standard of living (You read that right. Convicts received their Ticket of Leave on arrival along with a paid job}. The soldiers once outed, were sentenced to serve their time in an English prison. In less than 40 years Australia had gone from completely unsettled to a society on the edge of known civilisation that could offer a higher living standard to the poorer and middle classes. Convicts even had Legislative Council representation and their own political party. So long as Sarah kept her nose clean, there's every reason to believe she could have done quite well for herself. The very hope of which was stolen from Hannah. Ironic.
    Wishing you and BCat a terrific week. I'm looking forward to next week's tale of darstardry and woe.
    🕵‍♀😻

    • @nozoto
      @nozoto หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      An infortunate "accident" right?
      At a moment's notice, right after Hannah sold all her belongings or entrusted them to the traitor...
      Of course, it's a natural accident, the destruction of one's eye socket with a weapon. You know, someone you'd be about to marry, at that. Duh, slapping someone accidently with the hand extended in the heat of the moment is obviously not the more natural scenario
      🙄

    These Jamaican estates which need following up feature as plot devices in both "Jane Eyre" and "Persuasion". As a matter of interest, in the picture of poor Sarah's presumed bridal carriage, the horse wears the notorious "bearing rein", grimly familiar to readers of "Black Beauty". We forget that all these things which turn up in literature were daily life at one time.

    I love listening to these historical tales every week. Brief Case does such a fantastic job. He doesn’t over embellish, use emotive language or over dramatic terms. Each case has a flair of the era. That’s what I appreciate. Sometimes I wonder how much more quickly the crimes would be solved today given the tools the police have. Criminals are always caught… or at least the stupid ones are. So many have gone unpunished, and even undetected.

    Its amazing how they ever solved cases without the forensics we have, today, & the amount of innocent people convicted was prob far higher than those guilty. You had to be Sherlock in order to get anything done & not many were. Im so glad I wasnt born back then though Im pretty sure my past life was in the 17th century as Ive had the same dream since I was a little girl of first person perspective, seeing through my own eyes at a ball of sorts, wearing a red dress, but judging the style, and the style of those around me, it was of upper echelon, it was of that style, and I was just dancing around the ballroom with a man. This is all I remember on my own, since I was 4, and glad, cause im sure all the other memories were full of sickness, plague, & murder. That seems to be all that happened back then.

      well, she was a hard working and saving type of person I surmise. BC tells us that there was jewelry and receipts of other pawned items. She also sadly lost husbands, so she would have had at least wedding rings. Likely he saw her wearing such, and knowing she was more of less alone in the world (an easier target) and upon speaking to her seeing she was lonely, set out to take what he could get from her. Someone above mentioned that the police at the time should have investigated the "having sadly lost 3 previous wives" thing. She may not have had large wealth for that time, but she certainly had something worth taking from her hard work and jewelry. Perhaps he also thought a richer target would be more easily missed too.
