Every time I watch these every Monday morning I keep a tab on with Google maps on it. I love going to the towns , especially England since I've never been there. Thank you, BC. Another fascinating story. Both Joan and August seemed like lost souls. Why Joan's mother expressed little to no interest in helping her? Why did August kill her? Her name tattooed on his arm indicated he had cared about her. May they both Rest in Peace. Thank you, Brief Case for making the beginning of my week better. :)
@@Nyctophora During the war, a lot of people temporarily or permanently moved out of their houses due to bombing. Either cuz they had no choice, due to being bombed out, or as a safety precaution, for example all the Londoners who moved into the tube system. It's likely that Joan's mother might have moved elsewhere and not gotten the letter.
The case against August was SO not proved. Lots of reasonable doubt. August was good to Joan. Building her the wigwams, attempting to visit her in hospital, the tattoo. He knew enough about her to give a 17,000 word statement. Joan was involved with other Canadian soldiers. It could've been one of them that murdered her and framed August.
I think it was about the pregnancy. She met August two days after her fiance left (and may have already been pregnant), yet she told August the baby was his. Her mother likely disowned her because she was pregnant, which explains her not writing back. August may have found out the child wasn't his or started to doubt the child was his and didn't want to marry her anymore. He was already jealous and didn't trust her faithfulness, and wanted to move on.
Joan may have felt life at home was too structured but I doubt her freedom, choices and later circumstances made her any happier. She wanted to enjoy herself and she did, for a while, between the two extremes. Sad end to a too short life. Thank you Brief Case for another Monday brief case.

I have ofened noticed that children who are raised in a very strict and religious way, when they get older they often rebel. Maybe cause they have felt so controlled growing up.
If you raise your child to believe in the Bible, then you include the Whole of lessons. Many religious parents are guilty of raising gullible, naive, silly girls who are then thrown to the wolves when they go on their own. Ridiculous ideas that discussing and preparing girls for opposite sex relationships is somehow shameful. Ludicrous idea. Good morning Mr. Brief Case! What an interesting story and told so well. I always feel I’m actually there experiencing everything first hand. Thank you for bringing all these unknown true cases. ❤
Hello BC, Thankyou so much for yet another well researched, well told story about the unfortunate Joan Wolfe…. I found it rather sad when you think of her life, losing her father at such a young age, then her mother remarrying and her stepfather committing suicide…not the wholesome start in a young girls life. I feel she was craving love from a sweetheart, and all those Canadian soldiers must have been sweets in a candy shop! Sad the first one she engaged to, was sent back to Canada and then just disappeared! August looked like a strong caring man, building wigwams for her, though I don’t understand why she wasn’t staying at the bungalow with (I thought) her employer! She should have taken more care re birth control, but she fell pregnant and maybe August felt trapped or maybe someone else found her and tried to force his attentions on her….whatever happened I would have hoped it hadn’t been August, tge judge seemed quite set on hanging, despite Augusts plea, and the jury’s recommendation . I also thought the Canadian’s would have to have been involved in what happened to one of their men, but no mention of any Representative from there. So sadly three people died, Joan, August and the baby. So sad. Regarding that unusual knife, do you Know what it’s real purpose was for, being curved like that?? A 17,000 worded statement! For someone who couldn’t read or write, he’d certainly built up a language bank! Hope some poor clerk didn’t have to stand up and read it all out to the court! We think awful murders happen today, and it’s true, sadly they do. But my gosh what went on back in the day staggers belief sometimes! Not forgetting Jack the Ripper! Once again BC we applaud and thank you for keeping us riveted to the edge of our chairs, with another of your fascinating stories! With all best wishes! 👩🦳👏👏👏👏💫🥇🏆🌻🌻🌻🌻
Think the only birth control back then were condoms, that had to be purchased and prob were not as preventative as they are today. A young woman wouldn’t be buying them either😮 I don’t think she was still in the employment of the lady at the bungalow. She seemed to be unreliable in any employment she was in. She was a bit of a ‘goer’ 😂 liked the attention of men. My own grandmother, who would have been of a similar age around that time, was a goer too, by 1947 she had three daughters by three different men, none of whom she married, a wartime pilot, an army guy and a bus driver, who happened to be the father of my dad! So my mother and father had a half sister between them. I will get my bango!
@ my mother a young married woman and nurse at that time said they also could buy a foam spermicide m but was very messy! ( yuk! Can you imagine?!?) but better than the 15th century when they used sheep gut condoms! So at least Mr Durex has helped Our generation as did whoever invented the pill! !! 😂👩🦳🌹💫
I wonder if the fact that August was part Native American played a role in his punishment. I don't doubt that he was guilty of the murder, but the judge imposing the death penalty against the jury's recommendation seems very harsh.
She probably only had the most minimal sex education, so she probably knew next to nothing about birth control. August may not have known a lot more. Then there was access, were they able to get to a chemist (pharmacy) that would sell them? Even modern condoms are not 100% effective. Condoms weren't so primitive as to be ineffective back then but, if you could get hold of some sort of spermicide to use in conjunction with the condom you were a lot safer. Again, I suspect neither of them would have known about that.
Sounds like they both had some mental health issues. She had a rather traumatic childhood and if her stepdad was prone to outbursts in public who knows what he was like at home. Plus she had a change in her behavior and her actions show she may have had some sort of mental illness. Not sure about August but not knowing how to read or write shows some type of learning disability or neglect. He also gave a long speech to the police. He built places for her to stay and often accused her of being unfaithful. Sad case all around.
Boom, BC....BOOM! This was a very interesting and intriguing case. The poor young woman. Sounds like she was starting to show signs of mental illness. This is awful what happened to her.
This was so so sad ...Joan's situation is truly unimaginable and I feel for the soldier too what a sad situation and the war on top of it Really trying times 🇺🇸
Hello from Virginia!! This video was excellent as usual!! I really do look forward to your video posts, even though it’s on Mondays!! Great Job Brief Case!! I’m watching it a second time now!!
This is a sad story. I wonder if Joan losing her father at such a young age and then her stepfather committing suicide had an effect on her mental stability, it seems possible. It was also possible that someone other than August killed Joan but the greatest likelihood is that he was guilty. Joan seemed to be both unstable and prone to infidelity, August was illiterate and from a somewhat disadvantaged background so that may have pushed him over the edge. The real problem is that it is not possible to know the truth and l can’t see that the case against this man was proved. It’s easy to make harsh judgements on people but these two were both clearly troubled individuals living in a difficult and unstable time for those reasons they have my sympathy

Great case pick BC! I’m trying not to spoil anything but… Did they ever confirm the pregnancy? And the reveal at the very end had me asking more questions.
Perhaps her mother never listened to Joan. The stepfather was clearly very disturbed, it wouldn't be the first time a young girl was victimised at home and told to shut up about it. By both parents
That was a highly unusal story , from her high hope education beginnings to being unable to keep a job and homelessness. Her poor mum had to identify her after that severe head trauma she suffered. And Ive never heard of a jury being been given a skull to ponder on , while deliberating on a defendants fate. 😮.
Poor mum? If she answered her daughter's letter and allowed her to move back in, she would have lived longer most likely. I get she was fed up with Joan's inability to have a situation worthy of her standing or even keep a job, but surely she could have worked something out until she meets a man more decent than that roughneck soldier. If not handsome and rich, at least a hard working and serious gentleman. Though, I have to wonder if the motive of the crime was not Auguste being furious because Joan blackmailed him into wedding by telling she's pregnant. Maybe she was that desperate, I am not sure. If so, the crime was still heinous, but understandable enough to warrant a life in prison sentence instead of a death one.
@ yep true, but it still would be awful for a mother. The dynamics between them was strange. How Joan went so very far off her perspective and most likely path.
What an incredible episode! Poor Joan, but did he really kill her? I love listening to you tell about these accounts. Thank you for making my Monday so incredible!!
This tragic story has really brought home the fact that my daughter is strong enough to move out. I know it's a weird takeaway, but my 29 yr old, newly married daughter keeps trying to tell me they can't move out because life is SO much harder these days! Brief Case has reminded me that times have been much harder for previous generations! What an incredible tale!
Right! This story (besides the murder part!) actually reminded me of my younger self. My late daughter’s father had built us a lean-to in the woods to live in after my father kicked me out. (He could live with his mother alone, but she HATED me!!!) We lived out there for a year and a half up until my daughter was conceived (in the lean-to! 😂) While it was kind of exciting and romantic, it sure was a difficult existence and one I would never want for my own daughter! Anyway, yeah- where there is a will, there is a way. I cooked many a meal over a fire and learned many survival skills from my time in the woods, but in the end, it’s certainly nothing I would recommend! I must say, however, that your daughter does have a point though…. Without a good, high-paying job, a partner, and/or roommates; no one is going to be able to afford a place of their own in this economy. It IS extremely tough out here! My daughter is 14 and I honestly do not expect her to leave out on her own right away at 18 or right after college either. Times are rough!
@@christinafidance340 great response. It IS harder for kids these days to secure housing (Boomers and anyone older didn't have credit scores to contend with, for starters). It always amazes me how older generations think everything has stayed the same as it was for them, so it must be that the kids -they raised- are just lazy.
Buying power for things like rent are awful these days though. I’m paying soooo much more than my parents did for accommodation. Food, clothing and utilities too. Your daughter isn’t being dramatic. Macro-economists would back her up. Economic policy has been working against the average worker for decades and now we are seeing the effect.
I find your comment a little disturbing, you listen to a story about a woman getting murdered because she had no home, yet, what comes to your mind is how much you want her out? Where's the relief that she's safe at home and alive???😢😢😢
That sounds like such a fun and immersive way to enjoy the stories! Following along on Google Maps and virtually visiting the towns adds a layer of connection that brings history and locations to life. There’s something fascinating about “walking” the streets and seeing how places look today, especially when it involves an old address or a town you’ve never been to. It’s like a little virtual adventure every Monday, transporting you to another place and time without leaving home. What a perfect way to kick off the week with a sense of discovery!
Hello BC! Wow, This case definitely was one of those that makes you think... I was doing my best to listen to all the evidence but we're having severe weather where I'm at and it was hard to concentrate on everything. I think this case is one of those cases that makes you question whether or not Sangret actually did it since there was other Canadian soldiers that could've known where Joan was since the wigwam was on military land, plus, she was known to see other soldiers in the past which could have had a weapon like that. Sangret was also known to be jealous and suspicious of Joan due being seen out with other Canadian soldiers and having a fiancee that left to go back to Canada; however, there was no blood or fingerprints on the weapon. I believe they relied more on circumstantial evidence to convict Sangret. I'm not saying he didn't do it, but I don't think they had a very strong case connecting him to the murder. I didn't hear in the forensic findings that there was definitive proof that Joan was pregnant. This definitely could be used as motive to kill Joan if Sangret thought the baby wasn't his coupled with his jealousy. It's definitely a very sad case and one thing's for sure- Poor Joan suffered tremendously. Rest in Peace, Joan.
😅 Joan supposedly didnt mean anything to him but he got her full name tattooed on his body? Ok buddy. Seems like a lovers spat gone wrong. Great Video again!🎉
This is a really gnarly case. In the weeks, months and even years before her death there was clearly a good deal of prejudice against Joan, she didn't fit the stereotype of a nice young lady of that time at all. Rather she was a floozy, a "loose woman", or, as some might say now, a skank, at least in the eyes of many around her. Look at the prosecutor referring to her as "wigwam girl" and the prosecutor is supposed to be the one going after justice for the victim. I struggle with time keeping - and we're not told what sort of time keeping instruments Joan had access to so she may have had a lot more excuses than I do. We don't know what sort of access she had to transport to get her to work. In many cultures, especially those shaped by the Industrial Revolution, time keeping and punctuality are seen as major virtues, right up at the top of the table so if Joan struggled with them, that would amplify the prejudice against her. At the same time, August's illiteracy and lack of education seem to have created significant disadvantages and his defence council doesn't seem to have done all that great a job. By modern standards, I'm not sure that he can be said to have had a fair trial. He certainly appears to have been the most likely offender - but "most likely" and "guilty beyond reasonable doubt" are not the same. There are significant questions regarding the reliability of forensic evidence these days, (fingerprints may be unique but fingerprint identification, especially when the print in question is a partial is not as reliable as they like to claim, and fingerprints _can_ be planted, to give just one example), so I am less than 100% confident that the forensic evidence against August was reliable. (EDIT: I was surprised that the autopsy results did not include saying that she was pregnant.) The forensic evidence was the strongest part of the prosecution case but if that is a bit iffy, then the rest of it starts to look even more dubious. Did August have a history of violence or angry outbursts? Again, it is likely that there was some racial prejudice against him which would not have helped his defence. Yes, it is possible that August suddenly turned on Joan, that's not unknown. It's also possible that, as the defence suggested, the perpetrator was someone else who wasn't even considered.
I agree. Unfortunately due to her lifestyle she may have just hooked up with a killer.... On balance it probably was August, but I think there's a fair degree of doubt. I'm not belittling how she lived her life at all, but 80 years ago it would not have been the norm.
Hanging out with soldiers in pubs, living in a wigwam, eating squirrels, selling berries for a few pennies, wearing birch wood in 20th century England; that’s a red flag.
For what? She’s the victim. There were red flags missed but they were her killer’s who was allowed to walk the countryside until he found a girl who wouldn’t be missed too much. Are we really judging this girl harder than the man who took her life? Really???
What?? A wigwam, gathering blackberries to sell, sleeping anywhere but in a real bed,, probably pregnant but, the very worst of all, her skull reconstructed from 38 pieces.... THIRTY EIGHT... not even Steven King could come up with something as horrific as this.
After everything he did to help her. It's hard to believe he turned around and killed her. This one was a difficult one. Everything stay safe. ✌️BC, very good one. 👍
I'm familiar with this case and always felt sorry for Joan. It wasn't made clear in the books I've read, if she was "simple minded". But she did make some strange choices, poor thing.

@Flamsterette - Tomorrow is election day in the US. I think that should be Waiting For the Barbarians Day!

Thanks again Brief Case for another great case
Thanks Bobby :)
Great case pick BC! I’m trying not to spoil anything but…
Did they ever confirm the pregnancy? And the reveal at the very end had me asking more questions.
No that was never confirmed
Wow, I wish Joan had listened to her mother.😢
Perhaps her mother never listened to Joan. The stepfather was clearly very disturbed, it wouldn't be the first time a young girl was victimised at home and told to shut up about it. By both parents
@pipfox7834 Very true
Wow, the end of this was particularly chilling. Very well done, sir. Another excellent video.
Thank you very much!
Good morning BC. Really love the last month stories.
Thanks Dianne :)
Thank you!
Another Monday made great by Brief Case ❤
Thanks Elle :)
These pictures are outstanding. Well done
Thanks
OHAYO, Briefcase! 🎉
Hello :)
There have been trials with the victim's head presented in a jar!
@ yes, you’re right. I wonder what they are hoping to gain from these macabre props?
Love your channel. Subscribed and turned on notifications!!
Thankyou so much Lora :)
What an incredible episode! Poor Joan, but did he really kill her?
I love listening to you tell about these accounts.
Thank you for making my Monday so incredible!!
Thanks Kerry
I love your videos and find these old cases fascinating; how people lived and how crimes were investigated and dealt with.
Thank you for your work 👍
Thanks for watching :)
Times may be harder than they were in 1923, but they are MUCH harder than they were when you were 29! Although I couldn't WAIT to leave home, lol.
A sad life and a terrible end isn't most peoples idea of fun.
Thank you ❤
Right on time again BC, good afternoon ❤

Just had my Monday fix of Brief Case, another great episode well told x
Thank you for interesting coverage. Sad story.
Thanks for watching!
Thankyou brief case again for another interesting, shocking true crime story!
Thanks Emily :)
Briefcase 💼 ALWAYS makes my Monday's INSTANTLY better ❤
😅 Joan supposedly didnt mean anything to him but he got her full name tattooed on his body? Ok buddy. Seems like a lovers spat gone wrong. Great Video again!🎉
Poor little Joan.
Victim blaming, the last resort of a guilty person.
What a sad case, with her lifestyle I wonder if it was him who murdered her.
Excellent video. ❤
Thank you!
Good morning Brief Case.
(EDIT: I was surprised that the autopsy results did not include saying that she was pregnant.)
The forensic evidence was the strongest part of the prosecution case but if that is a bit iffy, then the rest of it starts to look even more dubious.
And........... breathe! 😅
Excellent point, he was the one closest to her, so he was blamed. It would be interesting to see the court transcripts
I agree. Unfortunately due to her lifestyle she may have just hooked up with a killer.... On balance it probably was August, but I think there's a fair degree of doubt. I'm not belittling how she lived her life at all, but 80 years ago it would not have been the norm.
So well said! I agree and also really disliked the use of 'wig wam girl' how dehumanising
Really???
Apart from the eating squirrel bit,it sounds rather idyllic 🤔! Beautiful,in fact.👍🏼🇬🇧❤️❤️❤️
@@DianaShewardWhat do you mean, squirrels taste excellent, very nutty after taste. 🐿
Society failed her
😅😅😅😅😅
Hi!!! I like your stories . I'm sure there are more about solders and girls...Thanks for this one. Nice Video!!!...Your fan&friend from USA...🇺🇸🦋

Good morning
Hi 💼! Another great episode
Love your stories!
Thank you!
I've never got here so soon! Another great episode and case, Brief!
Thankyou
Super sad one 😢
Sounds like Joan could've been bi-polar, before it was a thing.
It still isn’t a thing.
Thank you. Enjoyed.
Thank you too!
It was sad to hear her step by step journey downhill. Her first fiancee was fortunate she broke the engagement.
BC Thanx💙yet another great story
I'm familiar with this case and always felt sorry for Joan. It wasn't made clear in the books I've read, if she was "simple minded". But she did make some strange choices, poor thing.
Rest in peace sweet lady such a sad loss for her family
My Monday is complete❤
Great stuff!
