Before you buy a new circuit board: I simply unplugged/unclipped the two modular connectors below the dishwasher and plugged them back in and it came back to life. You should turn the circuit breaker off before you do this to prevent electrical shock. My theory on why this problem happens is that there may be corrosion that develops on/in the teeny tiny pins on these connectors. On mine, it wasn't just a power/reboot problem. I know this because prior to this solution, I had left my circuit breaker off for days and when I turned it back on, the dishwasher still didn't work. It wasn't until I pulled those mini modular connectors and reconnected them that it immediately came back to life. I made sure to repeatedly unplug and re-plug them in a bunch of times in a row in an attempt to "exercise" or help rub off any corrosion that may have developed on those pins or in the pin receiving holes on the plug before finally connecting them back permanently. So far so good. Not a fan of GE anymore.

Thank you! Bought an OEM part vs refurb. Anyone else who takes this on should be aware that they will encounter some very sharp corners and edges along the way. I think we all can agree that old school GE appliances would have lasted way more than 3 years, so the fact that we even need to have this video is a shame. In any case, well done, sir. Very helpful.

I totally agree. We replaced the interface board in the door and then the main control board only to end up with it still not working. I’m totally disappointed. We had a GE from the early 90s and it was still going strong when we replaced it with this newer one. Boy was that a mistake on our part.

Not to offend anyone but everyone is patting themselves on the back for “fixing” their own dishwasher and how much money they saved. Doesn’t it bother anyone that 3 and 4 year old appliances need to be fixed. I replaced the main power board at 2 years, repaired the pump at 3 and now 4 yrs. it’s dead again. I should have known it was coming, plug unplug works for a week or 2 then dead again. I did know it was up to something, random musical tones at all hours seam to be a harbinger of a problem. The thing that bothers me most is Where Is The Outrage! . This company is pumping out junk and people are happy when it’s only a board replacement. I plan to dissect the board and test each component, I wonder if there’s a GFI circuit that’s somehow resetting itself. One thing is for sure if I buy another dishwasher, it won’t be GE.

    • @ggardner2510
      @ggardner2510 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yes dead, unplug, wait, plug back in, it works. Glad I did more than watch the video. Seems odd they fail after the manufacturers warranty and like mine, @ 3+ years, just over what most extended warranties would run. If discharging a capacitor "resets" the power circuit, to me that is suspicious. My ROKU TV just started doing the same thing at 3+ years. I got an unwatchable green screen only while streaming that's reset using the same type of power reset. Planned obsolescence at it's best if manufacturers can program in which day a product will die.

Dishwasher had no power. Estimates I received were $350+ for repair. I went on repair clinic and purchased a control board and figured I would take a shot. The video was very helpful to follow along. I now have a functional dishwasher and saved $250 in the process. Took a bit longer than I would have expected, but it was much better than paying for the fix. Cannot recommend highly enough

I have similar GE dishwasher and I had similar symptoms. I was ready to replace the main board but I found REAL culprit.
The main 3 pin female connector that connect 120V power to the main board had was loose. I disassembled it, bent connectors and put it back together. It works again and I didn't replace ANY parts. Sometimes other part that works with that connector has to be re soldered....(male connector that is soldered into the board). Folks, please check those electrical connections BEFORE buying expensive parts. A door/latch switch is very often overlooked cause of many failures.

Oh lordy, been washing dishes by hand for a while until I had time to pull the board and get the replacement board purchased.
Read a couple of the comments regarding unplugging and plugging in the main power connector to the board 2 or 3 times to remove any oxidation. Repeayed that process tonight and the dishwasher came back online immediately. Now we will see if it solves the problem long term!!

BEFORE replacing the control board,… try this instead,….. shut off the house breaker or unplug the control board (located behind the kick panel at the bottom), for say one hour, then plug back in or turn on the breaker. Every few months I get no power to the display, and all I do is the above, and it’s works each time. I’m very suspicious about this defect from GE, and someone is selling a lot of boards unnecessarily. At this point I just leave the home breaker off until I need to run the dishwasher.

Yeah, cleaning the contacts for the mains power fixed it.
Hard to see as they are so small, but both the line and neutral contacts are discolored some, darkened, and it does look like there was some oxidation on the metal of the contacts.
Cleaned them out with some mineral spirits, goo gone, a very small metal pick (for the male connector) and an electrical lead clipped off a large diode I had laying around... I cut some small scores in that to roughen it up and then jammed it in and out of the other connector.
Put it back together and it came right back.
If it happens again I'll buy a better connector set and replace it on the board.

If I had known that GE would screw up the old PotScrubber Dishwasher with something that failed after 3 years I would have bought 3 of them and just mothballed the stash and saved them in the attic. This is soul-crushing to have to shell out more and more money from my fixed income in retirement to pay for a modest, functional dwelling.

Thank you so much for this.
We have the same model at home and several months ago it started to regularly beep once out of nowhere. I think it was after a power surge (as you mention in the description). We let that go until it just suddenly stopped turning on. All I ended up doing was disconnecting this plug at 0:52, waited a bit before plugging it back and after turning on the breaker it beeped back to life! Glad I didn't have to go all the way to changing the board, but the video was nonetheless very helpful! Now to hoping it keeps on working.

Generally, if that condition worked, the junction box wires may be loose under the wire connector. Remember once power is applied or the switch is engaged the wires will react to current flow. If the connection is loose the power will arc across partially unconnected wires. Over time these arcing conditons will create dark spots on the conducting wires preventing good connection. I would advise to hire an Electrician to investigate the junction box which usually has several component wire nuts connecting electrical components or receptacles inside.

Before you do any of this, look up “GE dishwasher reset” and try the methods you find. Fixing it may be as simple as pressing some buttons.
Mine had no lights and no power to the control panel after we lost power a few times in a storm, and the circuit breaker was on. For my model, holding “Start” and “Select Cycle” together for five seconds enters a diagnostic mode, and doing it again exits the diagnostic mode. Entering and exiting diagnostic mode reset my dishwasher back to normal, no parts needed. My dishes are now being washed as I type this.

Editing to share more of my experience, since this has continued to be a problem. The issue with our specific machine seems to be the the plug connection from the power cord to the power board is loose. It's doesn't seem obvious upon first inspection, but the fact that you can wiggle the plugs while fully seated has me struggling to think of a resolution. A new board didn't fix the problem and I'm at a loss for how to get a better connection since you can't solder considering the plugs are plastic.

My GE Dishwasher developed the same symptoms as some of commenters' units: after completion of full washing and drying cycle, unit will not power back on until the circuit breaker is turned off then on. Tested for error codes and none detected. With the help of this excellent video, I easily replaced the control board with a genuine OEM board. Sadly, this was ineffective. Some commenters experienced the same outcome and subsequently replaced UI boards, control panels, door switches, et al, all to no avail. Scott, do have any suggestions regarding how to proceed from here? Has anyone punted and had a certified GE technician service their unit and restore proper function? If so, what was the defective part(s) and what was the total cost of the repair? Thanks in advance.

BAD DISHWASHER DESIGN, READ THIS WAR AND PEACE NOVEL TO GET THE WORK AROUND. :) I don't believe this issue is always the power control board at the base of the dishwasher. I believe that most of the issues are related to the UI board that control the buttons and display on the top of the door. Had the exact same issue 6 months ago. Dishwasher DOA, no sign of life as indIcated by the display and buttons on the top of the door. At the time I did not realize the dishwaster was just plugged into an outlet under sink (a simple check in the sink cabinet would have been useful, duh), so i just flipped the breaker for the kitchen off then on, and voila!, back in service again. This is in a house I only occupy part time, unfortunately, the next time I visited, same issue, washer DOA. I tried the breaker trick several times, to no avail. Aftrer reading this thread and a few others (reddit, etc), i decided to replace the power control board at the base of the washer. The new board also did not bring the washer back to life, so I decided to do some debugging of the board (I am a retired electrical engineer) and found the the power to the UI board was good (14V). The cable to the UI board has 6 wires, 2 of which carry the 14V, 1 Ground, and I asume (as I could not find electrical schematics for either board online) that the other 2 line are a serial interface for communications between the power control board and the UI board. This makes me believe the issue is indeed with the UI board. WIthout schematics, I dicided to just play around with power cycling the washer, as the VAST majority of people with DOA issues found that flipping the breaker, or unplugging the main power connector seemed to do the trick. Many believed that corrosion on the connector contracts was the culpret, at mechanical friction or electrical arcing as a result of plugging and unplugging/flipping power would eliminate the issue. I believe they are on the right track, but the issue is not with corrosion or loose contacts, it is the reset circuit design on the UI board. To prove this, i plugged the washer into an outlet strip (after making the remarkable discovery that my washer was NOT hard wired to AC, Duh). I found that i could ressurect the washer easily by turning it off, then on for approx 1 second, then off for one second, then back on. EVERY time it worked. For those not in the field of electronics, the most common circuit to perform a power up reset or asyncronous reset of electonict devices (computers, microcontrollers, etc) is composed of a simple resistor capacitor combination. The circuit provides power to the device reset line in a delayed fashion, allowing the electronics to start in a known state (very simplified explanation). A dedgredation in either component could cause the reset timing to be insufficient, potentially rendering it useless, or at best, irratic. WIthout the schematics, It is impossible to diagnose precisely and potentionally fix by replacing the component, or even better, adding components to prevent the failure/degredation. Failures of this type are usually a result of not specifying the correct voltage tolorance 3V/5V/12v/16v etc for the component, ant a surger or spike damages it. I believe when I arrived home that last time the washer was DOA, we most likely had a power outage, and the washer did not wake (reset) properly when the power was restored. So, in lieu of purchacing another poorly designed appliance, I will just keep the outlet strip under the sink and manually reset it when it goes into a coma. :) Cheers.

Is this the new part number? I could only find a part that is called the configured UI Board for $111.50 on GE’s website. Our dishwasher goes out more often. Sometimes leaving the breaker off and turning it back on later will bring power back to the dishwasher. Figured it was a switch assembly issue since the dishwasher functions sometimes and continues to chime even with the door closed. I’m starting to lean towards ordering this configured UI Board since it’s the most expensive part on the schematics.

Thoughts on Dielectric Grease on the electrical connectors? Several times a week, the GE Adora would have no power, unplugged it under the sink for an hour or so, and then it would power back up. Watched your video. I have power at both points shown. While I had it down I put the DG into the wire nuts and the circuit plugs. I suspect moisture was "shorting out" some type of internal breaker that resets by disconnecting power either via breaker or outlet plug?

The control panel would stay on constantly and chime even if the door is closed. Just debating on which route I’ll go. I may take the old board out and check the connection pins first. See if that fixes it. Worse case it’s the control board, if that doesn’t fix it it might be the switch assembly at the top of the dishwasher.

I would plug a lamp into the outlet below the sink to make sure the outlet has power👍

@@QuickAndEasy5MinuteAppliance thank you. We actually plugged it into a whole other outlet on the opposite wall just to try and still no power. :(

I bought a new power board (definitely not $65 anymore) and replaced the old one. It worked right away and we ran the dishwasher for 4 (maybe 5 cycles at the most) over the next 2 weeks and then it died again, with the same results of absolutely no power as before. Quite frustrating and a $110 down the drain.
    Any ideas?

      I’m sorry to hear that.
Can you try unplugging all the wires that go into it and then plug them back in?

I actually tried unplugging the dishwasher (I had read that turning off the breaker may help a reset) a couple of days ago. I forgot to plug it back in until today, but to my surprise, it seems to have worked. Cross my fingers it stays that way! We will see...
Funny/not funny thing is we'd gone like 6 months without a dishwasher on behalf of my frustration and deciding what to do next. ...Perhaps in vain.

I have an older GE Monogram custom panel dishwasher. Our power went out recently for maybe one minute and when it came on, my dishwasher wasn’t working!!! No lights/power! I had an appliance repair person out who stood in front of it for 3 minutes to tell me due to age of dishwasher, parts unavailable to fix it. I can’t seem to find the part myself for control board to enable functions? Model ZBD6890K00II. Would be grateful for any help or advice. I’m worried if I replace dishwasher, the custom panel won’t fit new unit. Thank you!

Can you try removing the electrical connections from the small circuit board located below your dishwasher door? Sometimes removing the electrical connectors and then putting them back will reset the board so that you don’t have to buy a new one👍

Curious about your issue. Mine GE dishwasher is dead but I have power current throughout. Was that similar?

Hi Jay. I wonder if it’s just needing a new control panel?

Yep! I replaced the UI board and that was it. I read that it is also a common issue. Thanks for the video and helping me determine what my issue was.

I thought this was going to solve my problem. Unfortunately I bought a new power board and installed it and I still don’t have power to the dishwasher….any other advice other than buying a new one?

    • @QuickAndEasy5MinuteAppliance

It might need a new door switch👍

You are awesome! I changed out the door latch and now I finally have power back to the dishwasher!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and help!
Now I have one more follow up question for you. The power constantly stays on now. Any chance you know what to do with that? The dishwasher isn’t constantly running but the power and lights stay on. Any help with that would be much appreciated.
Thanks again for your help with the other two issues!

Hey Scott, I replaced the board with refurbished, it worked for a week or so then it went dead again. I bought an original GE power board, but no power coming out of the door display. Any other suggestions. Greatly appreciated.

When I powered the board I saw a steady light in the power board. Does it mean that the board is good? Should I try to replace the GI next? Thanks I’m advanced.
