I have had my 2008 Rabbit (4 door, MT) for about a year and one half. Mileage has been super-duper consistant. Mixed driving average over life (65% city, 35% highway) is 26.5 MPG. Highway trips for me are always in the 29-30 range, and my top highway trip was 35.4 MPG. Extremely reliable, not a thing gone wrong. If you really want mileage, how about consider the 2010 version of the Golf (same car!) - that will get you a ton more mileage!
Love my 09 rabbit. No serious issues in 5 years. I really enjoy the 'auto stick' option - the manual hybrid mode, where you just tap the stick up to manually upshift, without needing a clutch. Also has the 'sport mode', where the auto shifting is more aggressive - comes in handy when you feel the need/use for aggressive driving, particularly when merging. Then just click it back into 'D' when you want that calm and comfortable normal driving mode. Brakes have just started to squeal in the last week, so it's time to get them looked at. Overall, it has been a great little car, decent on gas and very reliable overall. My Rabbit has pep and is fun to drive...
hey man i know its been 6 years lol but im 17 and i got an 09 rabbit for my first car. how do you get in sport mode in automatic? i had no idea it existed
I was able to transport a love seat in 2008 Rabbit. No issues with the car. Unfortunately headliner is now falling down around front interior light. I needed to wrap attena with electrical tape and replace a small exhaust coupled that may corrode. I replaced vacuum pump because of small oil leak.
@@davidandrews8007 ohh okay I was just asking, cause I really want one of these, and I have noticed a few for sale and I can see on the ceiling by the map light where it looks like it has been cut around it through the headliner, I figured this was what you was talking about.
@royceg3375 ok check out vacuum pump. Probably leaks unless replaced. Very nice car good acceleration and roomy. Nice audio system. I also had new front springs and a piece joining stainless exhaust system.
Just bought an 08 with only 87,500 miles; cannot wait to get in it again tomorrow. Anyone have recs for new speakers? Mine are past their prime for sure.
@@winter7995 Nope. Very reliable cars but I had to replace my ignition recently, it was $900 but I think they ripped me off. Other then that I’ve had no problems what so ever. Highly recommend getting one
I disagree that it's slower than Mazda 3 or Honda Civic. It's not, in the compact car segment the VW golf/rabbit beats all the competitors on performance of 2008 (not including the turbo charged chars). In 2014 Mazda 3 comes forward with it's GT model 184 hp and 185 torque
Just bought the exact car that's in this video. I went with the sports package so I have the 17inch alloy wheels. Also tinted the windows :) I would recommend this over the City Golf any day. I test drove both and the choice was obvious.
Yeah, I've been in LA traffic. It took over two hours to go 20 miles on the freeway! I was leaving LA on top of it all. Anyway, I just think I'm weird because I love manuals no matter what. Driving is not a right; driving is a privilege. Driving is also a skill. I don't care if someone is just going to the grocery store. I take pleasure in driving as a skill first and foremost. Manuals just add to the whole dynamic even when in crappy traffic.
Just bought an ‘09 Rabbit. 2 door. Headliners in these cars are really poor. Just removed mine and plan to re glue new fabric onto it this week. All new filters and oil and plugs and this thing is running great.
Just got a 2009 Rabbit in white. Love it but confused about the iPod magazine thing? Don't think I'll use it and the first gear seems to pause and then speeds up. I heard this before but I'm coming from a 99 manual blazer so I'm not used to automatic. I love this car though !
the 2003-2008 Volkswagen Rabbit/ Volkswagen Golf was assembled in Wolfsburg, Germany Uitenhage, South Africa Changchun, China Jakarta, Indonesia Solomonovo, Ukraine
I had one brand new, a 2008 5-speed. Fantastic feel, dreadful little bugger of things breaking electrical nonsense. The owners' manual sticker said Golf 2,5
And you're right, the DSG is faster than the manual. Unfortunately, you have to get a GTI to get a DSG! If you're getting the standard rabbit, you get a tiptronic automatic. Having driven them both, when I bought mine I took three pedals - just wasn't a comparison.
not price man, thats great especially since its made in Germany, making it the cheapest fully-German car available its the fuel economy, It does 22 MPG average, which is fine compared to a corvette or 911 but NOT a Civic or anything else in that class
i've seen some for around 15k and even 14k ! but thats here in the st.louis region but thats mostly on the 2 door models and the ones that aren't that equiped but i've seen some 4 doors for 16
I was set on getting this car next year... but now I really don't know. I've been reading consumer reviews and something greatly troubles me. Finding a car with traction control, decent power, and great gas mileage were all vital requirements... but now I'm reading many complaints that even with good service, this car's mpg falls down to between 25-28 after a a year or two, even when driven very conservatively. That does NOT work for me!!! DAMN!! This really pisses me off!!!
@soundseeker63 you need to understand the mindset of the american driver: whereas i'd probably kill for a diesel, most everyone else here hears "diesel" and thinks "pollution" personally, i'd love to see a diesel-electric hybrid released overe here... but i really doubt that'll happen
Didnt even mention the fold flat front passenger seat. Stupid KBB... I had an 08 for 2yrs, and did some performance and suspension upgrades, got more than 30 mpg on the hwy(400mi per tank on 14.5 gal, 89 octane). Handles better than my pre 03 Jetta GLS 1.8T and 01 GTI GLS 1.8T, even in stock trim.y ipod adapter was in the armrest . Super high quality build and performance for a bone stock econobox. Check out the 5 door Toyota Yaris hatch. It will be 10X more reliable, and cheaper to boot loaded. Not to mention fresh styling the these VDubs are'nt showing in this case......
@rteyber12 Coming from a family that owns both (the rabbit is mine, thank god), I couldn't agree more. Also, they compare this to a Mazda 3...not even close. Driven both, the Rabbit is head and shoulders above it.
The review invalidated itself when they stated it's not as sporty as a civic. Give me a f*-ckin break. The civic is a POS slow performer that's a joke. Oh sure the SI is sporty but that's not in the same class as this (GTI is appropriate comparison)
The design needs a major rehash. Also, how "refined" will the VW look on the shoulder of the road waiting for the tow truck to arrive....while the little Yaris whizzes by..... Seriously, check out the Toyota. :-)
That engine sounds pretty lame to me. 170hp 2.5 that barely does 30mpg? Weak. Here we have a 2.0 diesel with the same power that will do 50mpg, or a 2.0t petrol with 210hp that will do 35 mpg. Why put such an avarage engine in it? Weird.
i like the body style before this one....the last model has a good mix of old school and new....this new body style is just too rounded and techie and not as timeless looking.
I agree completely. Sorry but the front of that thing is ugly as hell. I hate the deign of the front end. The lights especially. But its not as bad as the Neon... that ugly thing looks like a smashed frog or something. That is the ugliest car I've ever seen in my life. I thought about getting a golf... but after taking the time to walk around it and get a really good look at it... yuck. I don't know why but somehow the front end styling of the GTi fixed it... and it looks good!
There's no point in getting a manual... well unless you're one of those deluded idiots who thinks you're not a man unless you drive stick. Pfft! DSG automatic transmission is so fast, it can out shift ANYONE on earth. Its actually that fast. It voids the point of even thinking about getting a manual. Manual transmission is going to be just a memory one day soon, mark my words. Its inefficient and slow compared to the semi-automatic transmission technology they're coming up with these days.

@bullreflexzr93 The Rabbit replaced the Golf from 2007-2009, before the Golf came back in 2010.
Was there a moonroof option for the 2-door ? You'd think it would be the other way around... 2 door gets the roof and other goodies.
