    Hi. I have a 06 GTI that give more problems than my teenager son, that makes me willing to sell it, But every time I see my car at my driveway, I change my mind and think this: " if it has boobs or wheels , it will cost money! " I like your video man, congrats !

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct!! Before I bought this car I did some research so I refrain from the GTI's and the 06-08 models. I bought the 2.5 for its reliability and durability. Together with a few mods you can make it as powerful as a GTI for those ppl seeking thrills. One thing I did notice was the ball bearings tend to go back so I replaced all of those too.

    Dude you seem to have had the same problems I did on my 08 Rabbit. You are spot on with all your points about tools and knowledge needed to work on the car. On the bright side I now have 170,000 miles on the car and the engine and transmission are perfect. The car is safe and fun to drive.

      Oh man that's awesome sauce!! Yes I agree with you; Once you get the car fixed and on point it is bullet proof. The engine and manual transmission on this car are awesome. I got the car with 47,000 miles and it now has 69,000 and going strong. Thank Mr. Khamesi for dropping a comment!

    I have a 2008 VW Rabbit 2.5 with 154K miles on it. It performs flawlessly, has no leaks (I deleted the vacuum pump), burns no oil, never overheats and gets great gas mileage with the 6-speed 09G Tiptronic transmission made by Aisin. All I've done to it is replace seals and sensors that are at life. You are spot-on about the interior, Gorilla Glue is holding some of my upholstery together. I use premium, European spec fluids throughout and I do 90% of the service and maintenance on it. I did have to replace the alternator and I upgraded the AC compressor solenoid switch to one made by RKX Tech, for cooler, quicker and more efficient cooling.
    Unlike you, I was lucky enough to buy mine from a head mechanic at a local dealership service department who had given it loving care for the prior 10 years of ownership. It has a couple of typical German electrical eccentricities that are tolerable. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross-country at any time, summer or winter.
    I love "Harvey" - I named him after the James Stewart movie with the 6' tall rabbit.

      @@ErickMartinSucre I run 87 octane Top Tier gas and get mid-20's in town and mid-30's on the interstate. I keep it in Sport mode on all roads except the interstate for sportier performance and the gas mileage is consistently great. I change the motor oil @ 5K intervals and I change the ATF @ 30K intervals. I use premium full synthetic Euro spec motor oil (VW 502 00 Spec) and premium (VW G 055 025 Spec) ATF.
      By the way, I had the same leak which allowed water to go into the rear hatch and I replaced the weather seal with an OEM one. Problem solved!

    I purchased a 2008 Golf 4 door with the automatic transmission back in 2014. The only issues I've had is wheel bearings and a leak in the vacuum pump like you mentioned. The car has 160,000 miles and still works perfectly. Knock on wood. Most reliable car I've owned.

    I own a used 2008 VW jetta SE with moon roof, leather seats, heated seats, etc. I got it for 14K with 38,000 miles on it. I think that was a pretty good deal. Now I reached 100K miles and the previous owners must of treated the car with respect because I never had trouble with this car. I do the usual maintenance on it. I also changed the valve cover myself and the vacuum pump. Very similar to what you did. I recently changed the trans fluid and I am ready to take it to 150K miles. I like the style and how it drives. It feels solid.

I have an 08 Rabbit S it's a 2.5 like yours and I got it for $7,000 with 85,000 on it so you got a better deal than me. The only thing I've had to do to mine is just routine maintenance and replace the flex pipe which I'm gonna do the whole exhaust like you did soon. My car has about 132,000 on it now and she's still ripping gears.

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow Kracula that is freaking epic! Actually although mine was cheaper I had to invest a few more grand to get it up to spec. It would have been more expensive if I used a mechanic for everything. I had a mechanic do the compressor for the ac because that is beyond my ability but everything else I was able to do. The exhaust is like the little highlight of the car, it brings a bit more life to it.

    Nice video, I bought an 07 rabbit in 2017 or so and it's been alright. Some of it like you had was dealing with the previous owners poor maintenance or negligence, here in NY this generation is pretty rust prone which stinks, but VW did good on their 12 year rust warranty which helped a lot. I don't know how I feel about this thing long term though, it could be a money pit -- anyone else out there have the mk5 2.5 automatic transmission with a lot of good miles on it. I'm currently at 95k and it's still driving very nice. I've done: rear brake adjustments/pads/rotors, shifter cable (broke), crankshaft pos. sensor (failed), vaccum pump rebuild (leaked on front), driver side axle (cv boot broke) and serpentine belt/pulleys as maintenance.

    • @ErickMartinSucre

      @@ErickMartinSucre Thanks for getting back to me! Yes, that needs to get done very soon. It shifts hard on rare ocassions, only when you are slowly coasting down a little hill and it has to feel out when to change gears from 3-2. That hasn't gotten any worse since I've had it and I mostly don't think about it, I've heard it could be the programming of the transmission would have to be reset for a gentler driving style than whoever had it last. Really hoping it's not the valve body showing some early trouble which is common.

    Note that European cars require European spec fluids for a reason. Their water is different from that in North America, so they use a different type of coolants. These coolants have special colors that are coded and they should NEVER be mixed. You can change the coolant color by purging the system as long as you stick with the spec required and DO NOT MIX. The motor oil has European spec requirements. The automatic transmissions require specific ATF (not necessarily European) that MUST meet the MANUFACTURER'S specs.
    Don't ASSUME anything with these European cars. They are great as long as you feed them their special diets. Otherwise, buy American or Japanese which are less picky.

    Check your radiator fans - they should both spin, never just one. The small one breaks very often but there's a free fix. Also, spraying the bump strip body colour would help the looks a lot. Great little cars, I have a TDI 140 DSG

      What's the free fix? My small fan is busted

    • @dopiaza2006
      @dopiaza2006 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, it's almost always the small fan. That's the one which cools the compressor too so important. You need to remove the fan pack which can be done from above or below, bit fiddly but not too bad, then dismantle until you have the broken fan separate.
      Prise the rear cover off - I use a screwdriver near the three tabs and it comes apart fairly easily. very carefully (so you don't lose anything), remove the circuit board and on it you will be the motor brushes. One or both will be seized in the carrier. Remove the brushes, clean them up and replace being careful not to lose the springs behind them. Replace the board, refit the cover - I've found a few taps with a hammer/screwdriver right near where you prised it open will reclose it adequately.
      Can test at this point with a 12v supply but if the brushes were seized, this is pretty much 100% the fix.
      Good Luck!

    You are welcome! Here is a fool-proof way to measure your mileage. By the way, my 2006 VW Rabbit does not come with a DTE indicator! VW must have some good bean counters in their finance dept.to eliminate a distance to empty indicator. Actual MPG: Hit the trip odometer to zero it out while you are at the Gas station. Fill the tank to the top and be patient. Fill it so you just see the fuel topping off in the filling neck. Now, drive around normally and go about 150+ miles. If you are on a long trip, this can be fun to record the data. After about 150 miles have passed, go to your nearest Gas station and fill it like you did before. Right to the top of the fuel filler neck. Now, look at your Gas pump. How many gallons and decimals have you used to fill up the gas tank? Example: Gas pump says 4.364 gallons pumped. Divide the new mileage on the trip odometer by the 4.364 gallons.. Example: 151.7 miles / 4.634 = 34.76 MPG. Everyone wants to do 75 MPH on the highway! But, on a long trip, this will burn up your fuel real fast and perhaps wear out your engine sooner. I drove from Houston TX to Las Vegas NV and got an average of 34 to 36.5 MPG with this 2.5L 2006 VW Rabbit with the 5 speed transmission and I measured the mileage with this method. By the way, this VW is one of the best cars I have ever owned. Fun and very reliable and very safe to drive. I would not want any other engine but the 2.5 liter because a lower size engine boggs out too much. I switched out the OEM rims with 50 series tires on VW Jetta rims. Good Luck !

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny you mentioned that Mr. Maika. I am currently doing a test on my Prius where I am measure how many miles I get from a full tank of gas on it. I currently have 2 little bars left on the dash showing me how much gas I have left and once it hits one bar I will reset the trip meter, fill gas tank and run it until it gets to one bar left. At that time I will fill the gas tank, lets say it take 9 gallons, and the car gave me 440 miles for example then I'll divide the 440 by 9 and I should get an average real life MPG measure. Planning on making a video out of this too 8-)

    The previous owner messed that car up. 08-09 are the most reliable. Just bought mine April 2016 with a 5-speed and 62k miles on it and an extended warranty. Put over 30k miles on it already and so far it's been really reliable, even the previous owner didn't have problems. I almost feel sorry for buying the warranty. In March 2009 I bought a brand new 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit S 2 door with Automatic Transmission and Heated Seats. My car now has 75k miles. Overall it's been very reliable. The only real repair I had was a minor problem with the transmission in July 2015. The dealer charged $400 to repair it. I got off easy. He said if the car had needed a new transmission it would have cost me $6000 ! I paid only $16,350 for the car in 3/09.

    As someone who owns a 2010 Jetta with the same engine and it's basically the same car, you picked up an abused pile of shit. I just redid my entire front end and rear end suspension at 190k (I've put 70k on it) and a lot of things were in reasonable shape. None of my boots were torn. The major problems with this car are the condenser, the AC compressor control valve (which can be purchased online), and the vacuum pump (which should just be deleted). It blows my mind you had to do the clutch. Mine is still factory. Hopefully this car has been treating you better. Also use Castrol EDGE 5W-40 or Liqui Moly for oil. Cut it with the Pennzoil bullshit. You're wearing your timing chain components out and once it jumps it's game over for this engine. They're insanely reliable and will do 300k no problem with proper maintenance.

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Fabian! Well I sold the car to my brother and that thing is still kicking aroun. If you have no slippage on the transmission or the transmission is not rough while changing gear it should be good. You may want to consider changing the transmission fluid but I would look online about that before you do it. Those 2.5 engines are bullet proof.

    • @boomerguy9935
      @boomerguy9935 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same thing in the 2008 model. I love my semi-auto 09G (VW number for the Aisin made transmission) with the Tiptronic semi-auto shifting capability. When I bought it from a friend with 140K miles on it, I did a complete tune-up including changing all fluids and I noticed that it immediately gave smoother shifts after changing the fluid. If you watch the TH-cam videos, you will see a long and complicated list of steps to do this and I followed it to be sure that I had the correct amount. Without going into detail, I found that as long as the car is level when changing the fluid, it will take exactly 2.5 quarts to replace it (without changing the filter which I don't think is necessary as long as you change the fluid every 30K miles at a minimum). I did change the filter the first time and it was spotless, so after doing some research, this was probably the last time. There are several brands out there but I think you should stick with a full synthetic ATF in a brand name which meets the VW specs of VW G 055 025.
      Another tip: I found that when the engine is started cold, wait for the rpm's to drop to 800 before putting it into gear and it will not "bump". It should only take a couple of minutes. The car now has 154K miles on it and runs flawlessly.

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I have heard it can be a 50/50 chance it'll be good or bad. Try riding it around and see if it shifts ok. By 100k miles it'll give signs of a bad transmission by being jolty and getting into gear late.

      Hello Jason and thank you for dropping a question. As far as I know the 2.5 engine is bullet proof and so it the manual transmision of it. From what I have heard, the auto transmission is 50/50 reliable in term if it being good or rough shifting. If it belonged to someone who was capable then it may have been maintained properly. For the price it is good in my opinion. Drive it around and see if the shifting of gears is rough and if it isn't then it should be good.

    I go to junk yards and find good used tires from a vehicle that is wrecked . Do your homework first though. Find out the best price for a set of new tires before you go looking for used tires. Sometimes, an unethical wrecking yard will over charge folks for used parts when they cost less as a new part. I found two very good shape 50 series 16" tires for this VW for $30 each at one of my favorite junkyards. Much less than the $400 one might spend on a new set. I inspect thoroughly the used tires for patches and nails and check cracks in the sidewalls. I have my favorite brands too. Firestone, Bridgestone, Continental, Michelin, Goodrich, Uniroyal, Cooper, and Dunlop make the best used tires. I am biased because I switched from Dunlop to Kumhos and noticed a HUGE downturn in performance. Not a fan of Goodyear, unless you have a 10 ply truck tire. Not a fan of low cost Chinese tires. Their citizens shun their own brands too !

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Maika A good point indeed. I never thought about the junk yards for used tires. Sometimes if I get a used tire from a shop, they are usually unbalanced or have uneven wear that causes the tire to make weird noises

    • @tommaika9121
      @tommaika9121 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, there are used tires that are off a car for a reason. They took it off because the tire was ruined by a bad ball joint, a bad alignment, control arm etc. But, if the car is wrecked, and the tires have been visually inspected by you prior to purchasing it, you can find bargains. Most good junkyards will not sell someone a used tire with serious bubbles, cupping or damage to the tire due to liability. Sometimes a truck will have a spare tire underneath that has never been installed. If it is not check cracked, you basically have a new tire, which has spent time outside in the weather. I know some ethical mechanics in St. Petersburg FL who steered me away (no pun intended) from a bad tire blem that I did not see! Use those mechanics!

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Maika Very good info indeed. Thankfully with the Prius tires are not too expensive

    • @tommaika9121
      @tommaika9121 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is because THEY picked them out of THEIR inventory. Be your own Jobber and hunt for the parts in a junkyard yourself. Most places will set aside a section for tires they sell. It pays to shop around. Look through their used rims too. You may be surprised at what you''ll find. I do not like high retail priced junkyards. I like those that are a little dirty and dysfunctional and fair on price. Usually they'll be happy to just get rid of parts and you can cash in ! If the owner gets to know you, he'll cut you breaks too.

    • @tommaika9121
      @tommaika9121 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here is a perfect example. My VW needed a battery. I called several junkyards in Houston to ask how much a used battery runs. He said "50.00". I said...no way! In my favorite junkyard in PA, I buy them for $18 with exchange for the old battery. Since I was too far away, I went to Walmart and bought a 750 CCA Marine Battery brand new for $59 + taxes etc. I know the price I want to pay for a used battery and know how much new batteries are at Autozone vs Advance vs Walmart vs Sears. Do your homework ahead of time. Junkyards can rip you off by over charging you for parts.

    I really, REALLY want a Mk5 2008 Jetta S I really want with 56k miles sold at a dealership for $8000. The dealer says they do 125 point inspections, although I would take it to a VW specialist for inspection. However my mom won't let me get it because of her experiences with the lights that pop up on the dash (happened on her 00 Jetta 2.0 (minimally), 01 Passat V6 (constant), and an 11 Jetta TDI (the best of the three, got rid because dieselgate)). If there are problems the dealer does have a 5 day full refund return policy if I don't want it. Is it worth getting it just to check it out and inspected because holy shit I am OBSESSED with it!!!

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just as I thought, great car but if you get it with the Automatic Transmission it can get shitty. If it is manual then you'll be ok. As I mentioned on the video you may need to check the ball bearings, the rear breaks tend to wear quickly, check sway bars, ball joints and CV axles for broken bushings. If this model comes with the 2.5 engine you may want to change the Vacuum Pump and exchange it with a vacuum pump delete kit. All 2.5's will eventually leak oil through the vacuum pump.
