As soon as you said you were “committed to open source” I paused the vid to write this. JB, you’re a great ambassador for FPV. It fills me full of hope for this hobby knowing that you’re responsible & smart & won’t put up with monopolies bullying market competitors. Market competition is the driving force behind this kind of technology. 👍🏻👍🏻🤓

Welcome to the club! My first radio was a Jumper t8sg , haha . It's a bit toyish, but it's cool, because it's basically a multiprotocol module with gimbals. If you can, get a simulator set up. Best thing you can do for your flying and it'll save you hundfeds if not more in crash repairs. Not that it'll keep you from crashing, but getting the first 50 out of the way by being able to hit the teset buttoj is virtually priceless. Happy flying, brother! 👍 And Hi @MC's Creations 😁

OK Joshua, you convinced me. I have used my X9D+ for the last several years and was just about to order the new 2019 version. You changed my mind. My T16 Pro is ordered today and I'm in fact excited to try the new color LCD in all its glory!

Well... It's good enough for me! 😊
I can make a 2 cell charger for 18650s with 2 TP4056, no problems. (Actually, I think I'm going to!)
To be honest, I have my X9D Plus SE and I'm pretty happy with it and I'm not going to change. But I need to buy a second radio for my father soon enough. And I totally agree, Joshua, I don't feel well buying a FrSky radio right now. So I guess I'm going to choose the T16. 😊
Oh, and FANTASTIC news about OpenTX! 😃

Joshua, you should try to partner with Jumper and release the "JB T16", it would be completely innovative as I have never seen a radio with a pilots name on it (there are a lot quad parts though, that's common now). People are looking for new radios and maybe they don't want to support Frsky because of the polemic happening right now or they don't want to have to jump the hoops to get CRSF or get a module to get D8, or they are looking for something reliable that doesn't failsafe like Spektrum or they want to support the cool guys. You could also put a sweet decal on it and have your signature, plus you are the knowitall tech guy, and having a signature radio would drive people crazy.

    • @tehllama42

I really do like that idea. Premium case design, internal multiprotocol & hall effect gimbals, external charging port (even if it's just a goggle barrel adapter pass-through), maybe have them add a small external switch to turn off the screen when not in use, and that's a product I'd throw $200 at in a heartbeat.
That radio, plus your multimedia documentation on how to configure it (for ANY receiver, plus CRSF add-on) would be the standard-bearer.

I've managed to setup a model for the simulator and started flying (crashing). The Sender really feels good, and everything worked fine (You have to enable Input access for the simulator app in the preferences if you are on a Mac). Thanks for your effords Joshua

So I started in this hobby earlier this year. I took a plunge and forked out to buy an X9D plus se after watching reviews and wanted a future proof radio not knowing what was coming with access firmware and the refresh line since I was new. Not only is my new radio now technically an old model but it also means the whole reason I bought it for future proofing is now questionable. So I did it. I bought a Jumper T16 pro a few moments ago and will be selling the X9D to fund a crossfire module and receivers for my quads. @#$% you Frsky.

I don't understand... If you intend to use a crossfire system of Rx/Tx and have no interest in the ACCESS series of Rx, what's wrong with the X9D? Sure, now you have a colour screen, but besides that, couldn't you have spent the 160$ you spent on the T16 on a Crossfire system?

Got my T16 this week after my trusty X9D died. T16 is nice so far - but I learnt the hard way about copying over models using the OpenTX Companion - when you copy them make sure you edit each model to switch the internal and external module to "OFF" before you write them to the radio !!! Else the radio freaks and no models are written and emergency mode entered. Do the edit and write them - then once on the radio just go in and switch internal or external module on again for each model - remember to do this every time you want to use companion to edit the models ! Hopefully it will soon be ok to use companion in the normal way when the T16 is supported by OpenTX.

Funny how Frsky crippled their flagship and shipped a royal piece of %$#@ 900Mhz R9 transmitter for free with it. Bought 2 R9 slim receivers and crashed several times before I realized it wasn't the FC but the Frsky. Using the crossfire on the same FC and flawless over 100 flights.

I bought my T16:Hall from rclife.co.uk it's an excellent radio. What makes this a no brainer is the unmatched price, colour screen, included multi mode module, internal and external software selectable module bays, build quality, hall effect gimbals and now open tx support! Even the battery choices is not an issue because 18650s and their chargers are commonly used for vaping, so they can be purchased at any vaping store. Any 2s battery that fits can also be used. You could go for an x9d and have a mono very low res screen but pay a lot more for a less flexible radio.

Plays Tetris and runs the LUA scripts that even my Jumper T16 doesn't. I have JST, Jumper 4 in 1 and R9M modules which lets me switch between the smaller T12 and T16 without re binding. Point being there is a lot of effort going on to support this radio. Jumper radios have the most capability, diversity and are very exciting to own. Also thx to the Deviation team too.

If what was said is true, I am surprised how much power FrSky has in the market...and I would be less inclined to buy FrSky in the future. Allo Joshua , I am still thinking I am new to the hobby and I like to spend my money very wisely so that my gear last for a very long time .For that reason when I learned about FrSky bullying ( yes that's what I call what they're doing ) resselers about Jumper and thought that this was a wise money investment (Multi-Protocol = 1 to run them all ) my decision was easy FrSky is now for me O U T PERNEMANENTLY !! I am very happy that Jumper has upgraded T16 to your suggestions ( & FPV Comunnity ) now I can spot a order for what I am almost certain is the last RC I will invest on , I am almost there now a bit more waiting for the Orca's and I will be set .Thank You so much for all you do for us , Cheers from up north Montreal Qc

I'm really glad I got T16+ when it was released, it was much more than worth the price even with those few cons and now literally all of them are resolved. I was disappointed with lack of internal module and almost didn't buy it, but the amount of people buying the it is probably what let them finally fulfil their plans.
BTW UnmannedTechShop sells it (as well as the new internal board) in UK and FPV24 sells it in Germany if you're from EU. They both still manage to sell FrSky products somehow.

I just bought the T16 Pro, a few months after this video to be sure, but this was the start. I'm all Spektrum right now, and frankly, OpenTx looks like a Commodore 64 in comparison. But Spectrum suffered the same fate Frsky is going to suffer... over- protecting without allowing for outside compatibility. And certain manufacturers ( Emax, I'm looking at you ), are only releasing products for Frsky ( Tinyhawk, etc. ) .

Alert !!! I just got the Jumper T16 Pro. To work with dsm2 and dsmx receivers BOTH internal RF and external RF have to be ON in the model setup menu. After hours trying to make it work with the internal RF only and no response I try both on and wala!! works.

  • @nitrovice

What the T16 is missing for me is a headphone jack. This is great to have when flying at an event where there's lots of noise around you. Hearing your speaker is not easy and I also wouldn't want to hear other people's battery level all the time too. Other than that, a great radio. With the headphone jack built in from the factory I guess I would buy the T16 as well.

Anyone have a problem with static coming out their speaker on the jumper? I got my radio today, soon as I turned it on I could hear static. Not 'loud' but noticeable. Seems to be tied to the screen. When the screen goes to sleep it gets louder, if I increase brightness it gets slightly quieter. Adjusting volume has no effect. I was so geeked up when the package arrived, then so pissed a couple hours later.

My first and only Frsky Taranis QX7 bit the dust (missed the river 1st fail safe -radio shut off-. Hit concrete from 60ft up do to another shut off).
My three quads run XM+ (not updated for RSSI...shame shame I know.)
The Jumper T16 has been in my wish list and would like to know if I would be able to easily Bind with XM+ receivers. Or if those XM+ receivers would need to be updated first.
Thanks for all you do! And thanks for everyone who helps out in the comments!

You should review a Futaba. Lots of top racing pilots are moving on to them. I know it's out of budget for most pilots but I think it would be cool to see what a "premium" radio brings to the table.

I'm heavily invested in FrSky/CRSF and am not a happy camper given FrSkys direction. Right now I'm living with the DJI basic radio because I am going all in (or very nearly so) on the DJI System. Sad as it is to say, I am truly unhappy with HDO/Rapidfire now that I'm used to the HD system. My ideal setup would be an open TX radio with a DJI module in the bay. I really, really miss my CRSF modded X7S, but not so bad I'm going to give up what DJI brings to the party.
As far as my thought on brand loyalty, FrSky is lower than dirt in my list, with DJI beating them by virtue of the fact they don't have any nasty privacy invasion/geofence/check-in in their FPV line. Flysky seems to have blown it as of late with the FPV underground debacle. Jeti is overpriced and too snooty for my taste. I'd probably pay the big bucks for a Spektrum IX-12, but still no DJI and very complex internally. They may be a contender before this is over though.
A Jumper with DJI connectivity would be a great setup. Wonder who is going to be 1st with a DJI module?? They can charge pretty steep for it considering the DJI $300 price for a plain-jane TX.
I'm going to tolerate the dumb and trimless DJI Tx for the winter and see what shows up. IF(BIG IF HERE) DJI really wants into our universe, a OpenTX radio will be on the drawing board, sans geofencing and the other nasty stuff.
I'm going to try my Clearview on the DJI goggles, and just ordered a Goggle front plate that accepts the Rapidfire. I don't expect DJI performance from either, but solid video with the analog limitations might let me fly my analog stuff without retrofitting all of them (and the ones that won't carry a DJI Air module). Dreams of HD Whooping abound....
Thanks for the nice update Joshua, keep us informed on how the Jumper stands up.

Hobby-wing.com carries them as well. I bought my first bnf setup from them when i first started flying fpv. They’ve taken care of me a few times when i had issues with some products. They are really good with customer service as far as Chinese vendors go.
ALSO! You want the PRO VERSION, not PLUS VERSION. The pro version supports crossfire! The plus does not.

Wow. This seems like the radio to have if we want to bind it to anything. I like my qx7, but wished it had crossfire support out of the box, as I would like to get a quad with crossfire in the future. Now I’m stuck! 😖 thanks Frsky! Nice way to alienate your customer base

As far as I can see OpenTX 2.3.1 (released yesterday) does NOT yet contain Jumper T16 support. It seems though that this support was merged into the branch 2.3 on GitHub about 11 days ago.
I really hope that they publish an official version containing support for the T16 soon.

Old guy story... The IBM PC was the leader and there were clones. IBM decided to try and cement their position by creating a faster proprietary bus that could not be easily cloned. The clones just kept using the old bus structure and they grew. Very quickly IBM became the one with the unusual bus so nobody wanted them. Meanwhile the clones developed faster and faster bus structures and you have the brands we have today.

Sold my DX8 and made the Jump (no pun intended!) to Open Tx with Jumper. Getting used to the different programming but really loving this Tx (and its big colour screen) - and for so little money. Quite a few places stocking it in the UK :-)

  • @SIXof0NE

While FrSky might have enough weight to bully their dealers, they cannot bully the consumer who ultimately decides how (and where) to spend their money. Jumper is the FrSky of five years ago, and FrSky recognizes that. They know what they brought to the table with the original DX9, and how they absolutely stole the market share for OpenTX users. This T16 represents the same avenue of escape for end users. As usual, Joshua hit the nail on the head here, and perfectly articulates why I won't be buying a new FrSky product and will instead purchase this updated T16 model. And I'll be making that purchase from TBS.
