    Good design in fictional ships is not just about adding strengths. But weaknesses as well.

    • @jasonbaird1645
      @jasonbaird1645 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      An excessive price tag is an acceptable weakness. A perfect ship can still lose if and when the enemy builds three reasonably good ships for the same price.

    • @atigerclaw
      @atigerclaw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      'There is always a bigger fish.'
      There are always methods to counter, and counter-counter in warfare. Especially when you focus too hard on making things 'perfect'. Real life teaches us that there is no such THING as perfect, and what you really get is a combination of juggling tradeoffs to fit how your fight, and good execution of your designed fighting methods by the men commanding the fight. If you have to 'add' weakness to your sci-fi ship, it's not that you're making it better, it's that the RULES are terrible and you're not adapting your ships to an in-fluff historical precedent.
      That being said, having the ship be more expensive does fall in line with the general increase in size and increase in equipment and armor to compensate. 'BIGGER!" is always more expensive and has natural drawbacks. The IJN Battleship Yamato, as a case example, was the epitome of the superdreadnought school of naval warfare. She was huge, had huge guns...
      ...And spent most of the war being a moving target with a flashing neon 'KILL ME!' sign above her for every fighter-bomber in range. Not only was she an expensive ship to build, she was expensive to operate if you wanted her to actually participate in a fight. Above 20 knots, you REALLY have to start burning fuel to maintain speed. So in order to get to a fight in time to do something, or reposition to avoid getting hit by a carrier group, she'd have to essentially be escorted by a small oiler fleet just to have enough fuel to steam at 30 knots.
      And of course, since Yamato was designed as a floating artillery piece, she was designed to ruin ships, not fight aircraft off. That in itself was a trade off and weapon weight and placement. If you wanted to get more AAA on the ship, you had to take some pretty beefy secondaries off the ship (Which the IJN did in fact do in one drydock visit).
      The Yamato was an overbuilt design for a then conventional sea battle, that got launched into a rapidly evolving environment where Naval Aviation quickly began to dominate. One of the oft ignored elements of the early 1900s was just how fast design evolution was, vs the speed in which you could build ships to match. A man can draft in weeks on paper what takes a shipyard years to build. One of the funny things about Aviation, is that because aircraft are small, they are easier to update to new models in a hurry. New plane designs were coming out every few months. Meanwhile, Yamato was a ship designed in a thirties, began construction in '37, and wasn't finished until '40.

      @@mr_h831 I imagine interservice rivalry had something to do with it too, as the guys in charge of procuring starfighters were also wary of anything that could reduce the Imperial Navy's dependence on them for point defense (much like how some in the Imperial Navy had reservations about the Death Star drawing resources away from their capital ship fleets), especially since they were already relegated to a support role in stark contrast to the very starfighter-heavy doctrine of the Old Republic. This might explain the issues with ships like the Lancer and Nebulon B in Imperial service too.

      I'd also have to say the Resurgent Class, at least if the technical manuals are to believed its stupidly fast (can accelerate to the same speed as a TIE, though I have to imagine that turn radius goes completely out the window) and has a greater focus and ability to deploy starfighters. Not that we ever got to see any of this but hey, details.

      @90skidcultist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Terix Septim I don't know what nonsense you`re talking about. The Reactors on both are very powerful. Especially compared to an ISD 1-2. You do understand that technology often makes things smaller right? Resurgent and the Allegiance are Battlecruisers. Period. That's like saying a 6 feet 5 and 250 pound boxer isn't a heavy weight because you feel like there is some arbitrary technicality he doesn't live up too.
      The old Tector would be called a "Heavy Star Destroyer" and there are modified Imperial 2s that can even beat those.The number of guns and the size isn't important!? Well, it depends... but you would have to be "dumb" to not see that it can be a war changer. Just look at the Lucerhulk. Many people would agree that the Lucerhulk is one of the best ships and carriers in star wars. That`s because of the size, holds more fighters and is heavily armored, and the size and number of guns it has. Size isn't everything, just look at the Nebula, but it does help when you aren't going crazy about it. Resurgent has great point defenses and large hangars, so they can get away with its size.

    • @90skidcultist
      @90skidcultist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Terix Septim Wiki is fine when you are looking up fiction. Its even in the books that the Resurgence is a battlecruiser. The person who also made the Allegiance even called that a battlecruiser as well. BTW, the Mon Calamari calls most of their ships star cruisers and nearly all are a lot smaller and weaker than the Battlecruisers I named.

I came to this after comparing size of their placement area with ship size and after doing the math I came to answer that area takes up around 145 meters in lenght which divided by 4 (number of turrets) gives ~36.25 meters for each. Since they don't touch by sides, I did some assumptions and came to this.

    This Fanon design is not just making the ship beefier, but it's also giving better arrangement to the weapons so as to get more weapons actually on target.
    A weakness with the main batteries of an ISD II is that unless you nose down significantly, the turrets don't actually look into the forward firing arc properly. The ISD3's weapons are spread and fan out along the hull, allowing for better fields of fire with each turret. The other advantage is in damage control. Damage to a turret doesn't risk taking the lot of them out in a chain explosion. Also makes them more dangerous for fighters to attack. Because to attack one, you have to present yourself to the others. On the ISD II, attacking one allows you to pretty much rush past all of them faster than you can track. And I'm pretty certain that no fighter survives a direct hit from a main heavy turbolaser.
    About the only thing that could make an ISD of any class a true monster without major shape alterations would be to place the heavy turbolaser turrets in a line down the ship's spin on the dorsal AND ventral sides. With what is known as Superfiring (super referring to 'above' or 'over' in terms of position) configuration, you could run a dozen batteries up the spine of the ship on each side, and they would have full forward attack arcs as well as broadside ability for ALL batteries. About the only arc you don't get is a dead-aft angle. But in a maneuver fight, if you let someone get back there, you've failed anyway.

    Are there any Mon Cala snubfighters?
    Or Gunships, bombers ect?
    Small manoeuvrable craft that are pure combat vessels.
    And did the Mon Cala make any light freighters?…Correllian YT Series [*cough cough].
    Side note, were YT series freighters capable of being converted into pure gunships and combat vessels - considering how effective the Millenium Falcon was while it still had cargo capacity and was a working ship.

    Eckhart I'd wager the reason for no interdiction is probably because of the sheer power drain interdiction technology uses. As we have seen from the Empire they don't usually make a large ship with a dedicated role. The Interdictor cruisers being an exception likely because the designers didn't have much choice. Since this ISD-III class is so heavily geared towards anti-ship combat, it is already using so much of that power on its shields and cannon. In addition if the interdiction spheres have to protrude from the hull as they do on the Interdictors, then this could conflict with the firing arcs of the ISD-III's batteries. Correcting these problems for one ship probably wouldn't be in the Empire's best interest if they need a new capitol ship now.

    That is a beautiful ship! I just tried searching it on Pinterest and couldn’t find it sadly 😕. Overall I think it would be a great ship for the FO in the new EU. Overall I would use that ship as a support ship due to its lack of speed and maneuvering in battle. Overall I wish we get a ship like this in future movies of comics.

    Hey got an Idea - Repurposment of Venator. Venator has a huge main hangar that goes all the way to the front. What if you used this hangar to store heavy missiles, and launched them from the front? = Missile cruiser!

  • @danielboatright8887
    @danielboatright8887 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The missile penetration isnt quite the advantage you may think.
    Sure a few bombers can pop a corvette and not even need to down its shields, but you heaviest DPS is capitol ship energy weapons which shields do stop, this means your missle attacks dont matter unless they can kill a subsystem (in mods with subsystems), or bring the hull to 0 (or enough to trigger inpaired speed, varies by mod).... at least until the shields go down, then you have a target with an allready damaged hull, but given how shield regen works in the game this can mean shield penetration can actually prolong more evenly matched battles, and makes rebel bombers (Ywing/Bwing) more dangerous because they have ion cannons (once again, in most mods).

    I don't know if this should even be called an ISD-III, because its not a direct upgrade of the ISD-II.
    Its an entirely new ship and though it clearly honors the ISD lineage, it should have a separate name, because it simply is not just an upgunned and uparmored ISD-II, which is what the ISD-II was, for the ISD-I.
    Maybe a "Conqueror-Class" or something along those lines would have made a more appropriate name, because from the size differences, and structural variations, it clearly is not just an ISD-II with more stuff added, its a whole new ship.

  • @RazielTheLost
    @RazielTheLost 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Personally I think a way better idea for the imperial 3 would involve automating most of the ship since the imperial 2 required far too many hands to make sense in war as well as having great sensors inside and out so nobody could really sneak aboard, by the way the imperial 2 and nearly all empire ships and bases also have those sensors already but they ignore that they exist in star wars otherwise plot couldn't happen. Other than that they should add weapons able to hit behind them and make the bridge inside the ship

  • @Freesorin837
    @Freesorin837 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a feeling that the justification for the missiles penetrating shields is that they are probably enveloped in an energy shroud, similar to a proton torpedo. Although I am basing this deduction off information from The New Essential Guide to Warfare and I have no idea if everything in there is still canon.

    • @airplanenut89
      @airplanenut89 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always figured that it was because shields in Star Wars acted like a non-Newtonian fluid. Weapons like the primary laser batteries hit the energy field with enough speed and force that it "hardens" up like when you hit a non-Newtonian fluid. Missiles and other solid objects might be traveling slow enough that they can pass through the shield and impact the hull.

    Can you do a video on new weapons that capital ships could/should use?? Instead of turbo lasers, ships could use Self Propelled Heavy Artillery cannons. So this venator for ex could replace the 6 heavy turbo lasers they have and put 4 SPHA’s on the ship for ex. Or a Imperial could have 16 SPHA’s. It’s a hypothetical thing that could be better than turbo lasers based off how powerful they are in The movies. And in the shows and movies, ships only fire like 3 turbo lasers ever at a time it looks like so might as well have a powerful gun. The SPHA could just be modified that it sits in the shit obviously and then the gun just rotates on top. And it has its own power source so it doesn’t really take power from the ship. Increasing the ships shield or thruster or power for other things too.... I think it would be an amazing thought and video to discuss? Something new that no one talks about!!!

    Hey Eckhart, awesome video. Fanon designs are very much a mixed bag, but I do have a few favorites myself. When it comes to Star Wars I think the answer is obvious, Fractal Sponge's work is just an a level of its own. I like when Fanon designs make tweaks and changes in a sort of "Line of succession" kind of way. I also enjoy seeing certain more "out there" designs so long as there's some basis for it within the lore.
    I'd like to suggest a couple of Star Trek Fanon designs that I've found to be exceptional. So here's a brief list.
    - 1st spot for me is the Century Class (USS Enterprise - F) by DJ Curtis i.pinimg.com/originals/fe/58/a8/fe58a8b2fa87319a3c6eeaa28d654d47.png = This ship builds on the Sovereign / Intrepid Class with elongated Saucer Section and the Engineering Section being built directly onto the saucer.
    - 2nd spot for me is the Courageous Class (USS Courageous) by MayhemUK i.pinimg.com/originals/48/c1/8d/48c18d5b45ad7bc930c1d565366ed9a5.jpg = This ship builds on the Defiant. The basic idea being that after the Dominion War, Starfleet noted the Defiant's effectiveness in combat and designed a new ship with that in mind. I like how it tends to merge design elements from more standard Starfleet designs and the Defiant. You can just about make out a Saucer Section and Engineering Section in this design.
    - 3rd spot for me is the Excalibur Class. (USS Excalibur) by i.pinimg.com/originals/8a/44/78/8a4478e65c397f31ee2bded2487d731a.jpg = Builds on the Galaxy, Sovereign and Excelsior Classes. Essentially takes all the roles of those ships and builds them into one. Almost excessively large really, hence why it is 3rd spot for me.
