The IMPERIAL Nebulon-B Frigate (Fan design)

  • The Nebulon-B has long been considered a Rebel vessel, but canonically this frigate was originally an Imperial vessel. I took on the challenge of creating what that might have looked like.
    Credits:
I designed and modeled this ship, with input from Angelos Karderinis who provided much of the hangar bay interior, as well as all of the renders in this video. Check out his work!

The 3D Rebel Nebulon-B in this video was provided by Adam Burch of Hangar-B productions. Check out his mind-blowing 3D aerospace work here:

This model was a big undertaking that included input from a lot of people.
Angelos Karderinis was instrumental in fleshing out the hangar and rendering virtually all the beauty shots for the video.
The Rebel Nebulon comes from Adam Burch of Hangar-B productions. So that's his Nebulon when we're fading between the two versions. We used it as a guide to the proportions for the Imperial version, and a few of its components are still visible in the final model, too!
Some of the details (particularly in the hangar) are also sourced from other artists, such as Ole Magnus Schei Sunnevåg (who has incredible Star Wars renders on ArtStation under that name). Many additional greeble details come from Howard Day (who can also be found on ArtStation with that name).

I remember when I ask you to do this a couple months back. I dont know if you did this in response to my request, but whether or not you did, these results far exceeded what my imagination could conceive of. Thank you so much for bringing a richer and deeper feeling to the ships we all know and love.

This design is absolutely awesome, it should be made official! Some parts remind me a little bit of the Raider-class corvette. Did you use it as inspiration?
BTW I think it would be nice, if you could do the Z-96 starfighter. It is only mentioned in one episode of Resistance and was introduced as the successor of the Z-95 Headhunter after the Clone Wars.

This reimagining makes so much sense! And it seems entirely possible and logical, one need look no further than the Y-wing bombers used by the Rebellion.
The armor was stripped and the parts simplified for maintenance and to increase speed, which was fitting considering the high speed hit-and-run tactics employed by the Rebellion. And this looks so good and the canon version legitimately looks stripped down by comparison.
    Brilliant!

@@girlgarde Almost, but not quite [this isn't a video game ;))]. Being resource poor and getting things from black market at the same time is something of a contradiction. You might be able to get some things from the "black market", but probably not whole ships, and certainly not ships that wouldn't need extensive modification to be made combat-worthy... so that part might be true about what "the Rebels can afford"...
combined with what they can steal (and then presumably welded on to their civilian-or-black-market-bought, non-military-yet-easily-modified-large-ships or something).
But, the inability to design ships is not really based on being "so resource poor" per-say, but probably more of just having fewer than their adversary as well as having to get around an opponent who already controlled the entire government, economy and field of battle (so the whole construction/production loop for large projects like that of a space combat frigate). So, basically, it seems somewhat incomplete/confusing without a conclusion after the "......." [such as the one i wrote below in response to Jpeg.]
      Just saying. :)

As such, it would make sense that even if they were not initially deployed, but become the standard once raiding increased and the shortcomings of the command-class and gozanti-class flotillas were past obvious to the point of embarrassment. In fact, the deployment of the NebulonB could be what forced the Rebellion to focus more on fleet actions, as raiding was becoming prohibitively costly in terms of pilots and fighters. In terms of the model itself... and its back story, its pretty much perfect. 9/10!

I have mixed feelings, we've seen several other smaller ships built by KDY that radically depart from the aesthetic of the Imperial navy. Funnily enough, what most people call the 'Imperial Aesthetic' is more a design style of the Blissex / Wessex family that designed the Imperial and Victory class in legends then something inherent in Kuati designs.
While this design looks good, it seems almost too clean to me. I'd have gone more with a modular mission pod like is used by the Temple-class Heavy Freighter design for a hangar bay. That would give the ship some girth and bulk.

well if you look at the full legends name "EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate". The EF76 was introduced as a counter-insurgency ship after the Clone Wars. It largely phased out the Class-C frigate. The Nebulon-B was originally designed to defend Imperial convoys against raids by Rebel starfighters, as the Imperial Navy wasn't keen on the idea of relegating its expensive Imperial-class Star Destroyers to escort duty, and the CR90 corvettes were too weak and carried few, if any, TIE Fighters. and for it job of a escort it has a Fabritech ANs-9.5w wide range sensor system. that why there a lot of antennas on the left side of the ship

My personal headcanon for the original Nebulon-B is more along the lines of the Porsche Ferdinand. The Empire put out the call to Kuat "We need a heavy-weapons platform frigate." But Kuat, currently focusing on the creation of Imperial-class Star Destroyers decided to outsource the work to several other companies, putting up a competition, as you would. "Whoever makes the best one is the one we will fund." So, several other companies came up with designs. One of these companies was Mon-Calamari Shipyards. MCS knew that a Rebellion was already in the works and knew which side they wanted to be on when it all kicked off, so they used this as an opportunity to create their first Warship idea and have their enemies pay for it. The Nebulon B has a lot of Mon-Cala inspired design-choices. Very smooth front, bulbous griblies along the hull and a dedicated command-deck that jutted out of the main space-frame. However, the lead designer of it was someone MCS had poached from Gallofree Yards INC. The same guy that designed the popular GR-75 and he brought a number of Gallofree inspired choices with him as he came, such as the exposed heavy shielding units that run down the front of the ship.
Kuat was not happy with the design, but every other entrant's designs had gone over budget too. They were originally going to go with one of the other designs, but the Empire demanded a large number of these ships quickly and brought the delivery date forward considerably (We have altered the deal, pray we do not alter it further) and Kuat started panicing. MCS, on the otherhand, was actually so confident in the design that they had already gone into full production and already had most of the order in production. With everyone else's designs still on the drawing-board, Kuat was forced to buy the MCS design. However, a lot of cut-backs happened in order to finish the design in time for the Empires delivery date. Specifically, because they were being built in 3 major sections (The front, the engines and the connecting pylon) So, they were forced to sacrifice a lot of the connective tissue between the 3 parts. Especially around the engines, hense why the Engines look like they were glued on with no real support, because that's pretty much what happened. The ship was good enough and the Empire got their order. Although they quickly fell out of favour with the Empire, as they did not fall inline with the Tarkin Doctrine. Eventually, they were sent back to Kuat who paid MCS to dispose of them. MCS of course pocketed the credits and gave the ships to the Rebellion, using the proceeds to fund more ships.

The Nebulon B was the thoughest capship in the games X Wing and TIE Fighter.
Pop the ISD's shield generators with proton torps and then blast it away from the huge blind spot around the engines. No problem.
Corellian corvette? Pop a turret and you are good.
Nebulon B no blind spot, no exposed shield generators, no turrets to pop. It took ages to wear down its shields and it ate Y Wings and TIE Bombers for breakfast. Any mission that featured the Nebulon B as an opfor was a headache.
Here is a little addition to your head canon to allow the games X-Wing and TIE Fighter. After the defeat at Yavin, the Empire realized that they needed anti-starfighter ships quick. They went to the scrapyards, too and salvaged everything space worthy and capable to hold anti-starfighter batteries and hanger bays. The Empire went function over form this time because they considered these ships as stop gap cannon fodders. Screen, slow down and annoy the enemy fighters as much as possible until better designs are available. For this reason, any restoration of the stripped down Nebulons was considered a waste of time and resources. On the contrary, they took the most stripped down but still functional Nebulon and made that as the standard template for the class. The Nebulon B. Even those ships, that were in better shape, were stripped down to be the same as the standard. This way, the Imperial Navy gained a fleet of standardized frigates AND resources from the stripping at the same time. Win-Win.

Ships that are technically canonical but have never appeared in any visual media?
    Chiss/Empire of the Hand warships.
We know they existed, and that they even had a star destroyer analog, but, with the exception of the Nssis-class Clawcraft, we never see *any* of them. Which in my opinion is a damn shame, as they are one of the most interesting EU factions in star wars (they were allies of the Empire hidden in the unknown regions).
I'd love to see you'd come up with.

Honestly the Empire probably could have kept these things, maybe as an assistant to the cantwell in discouraging pirate activity

I really like your vision here. Disney should get you on board, atleast their ships would be good.

Do you know of Mel's miniatures? I would absolutely buy a model of this for Star Wars Armada game! Seriously try to working something out with Mel's miniatures or maybe do it on your own. This would be awesome to add to a Armada fleet!!!

The big bad in my Star Wars table top game is using one of these, getting one reassembled to use as his flagship was how he managed the massive amount of space he had to cover. My players have come to fear the Comander and his His Nebulon B the Sundown!

This looks like something that could be a ramming ship.
    Just make the front pointy.

I always wondered where the "guns" were on this ship as seen in the movies. It's supposed to have quite a bit of turbolasers but I can't see where they would be placed.
Your version makes a lot more sense.

its hard sometimes to explain canonically something that was did in the real life for technichal purposes. During the concept modeling of the ships back in the original trilogy, they wanted the rebel medical vessel to look like it was made from scrap parts, since it was a rebel thing instead of an ordenated imperial one. They literally stacked up some previous models of rejected designs and built nebulon, as you can see in the sw documentary. It looks like this cuz the art guys literally scrapped parts of ships that lucas didnt approve and stacked up them, the result being nebulon b. You could probably in canon say that the nebulon b are damaged nebulon a imperial vessels, but this doesnt make much sense since every nebulon b is the same, like it was produced in a scrappy but ordenated rebel factory, with cheaper materials. A more convincing backstory would be exactly what it is in real life. The nebulon b was comissioned by the rebel alliance as a cheap to produce transport and medical vessel, focusing on infantry carrying, and to build it they tried to imitate the imperial vessel design you created with easily accessible scrap parts of common found spaceships.

its pretty clear LucasFilm should hire you. You have serious design chops. like I would be interested in seeing some completely original work

I also wouldn't be surprised if some Nebulon-Bs were deployed to the outer rim and wild space in order to take care of border disputes and local warlords where it was impractical to send a Victory class Star Destroyer. While on these far flung tours of duty, many young and conscripted officers may have become disillusioned by the Empire and defected to various rebel cells who themselves may have stripped the frigates due to the critical lack of material many cells contended with early in the war. Plus, any Nebulons who were taken intact wouldn't be able to be repaired as the rebellion may have lacked resources, blueprints, or the dockyards needed to repair an imperial capital ship. In their early years though, a mostly intact Nebulon would have been a terrific smuggling or infiltration ship as any minor exterior damage could easily be passed off a damage sustained in the outer rim and with a crew compliment of imperial defectors, they may have been able to sneak into imperial shipyards to steal material, starfighters, or even get repairs to the frigates if the imperials didn't catch on. Unfortunately, few Nebulons would have been able to pull off such a heist and as the war drug on and the rebellion able to secure larger and more capable capital ships, the usefulness of the decrepit Nebulons would have diminished until all they were used for was back of the line support ships, rarely in immediate combat.

Makes me wonder what an ISD would look like modified and stripped down for the rebels.

If I may, can I request a video or two focusing on why the Rebels didn't use Clone War Era CIS ships like the Trade Federation Battleships, or ships of the GAR, and what they could have looked like if they had been (seeing the ring and/or sphere of the Federation ships stripped down like your Nebulon's sounds very fascinating to me). And I recall in legends reading about the New Republic having Star Destroyers, and I would love to hear and see what you would say about that topic. Like, would they just paint them in Republic Red? Or would they also make design changes due to the SD being such an iconic Imperial ship?
