      Honestly few but strong primary ship-to-ship weaponries are just epic. You salvo fire and disable your opponent before it can fire back
      Thats the reason i like the idea of MAC or ships with spinal weaponries. And being if its fast its literally the death of slower ships that can't escape or get in range to fire back

      That's the thing I like about creating fleets of any sort in any IP; it needs to have a purpose it does very well.
      In this case:
      - 2 or 3 Peltast
      - 2 Interdictors
      - Several screening frigates and corvettes
      - Some missile boats
      - 4 large cruisers
      - 1 very mean dreadnaught (your choice of which)
      - 6 medium battleship class vessels
      - 2 dedicated carriers w/ fighters to spare
      - And not just any fighters...I want the TIE Defenders.

      Do Everything capital ships make some sense, given that they're generally going to be a big huge centerpiece of any task force, and therefore hugely expensive, if they're highly specialized... then you need multiple different ships to cover their weaknesses. Which is a problem, because they're hugely expensive.
      It's better to have your big expensive ships be multirole - because you're paying too much to cover for each other, too much to risk losing them if they get 'countered', and also you're paying enough to include basically all the features you want. The capital ship forms the durable, versatile core of the fleet, and _then_ you can have a bunch of smaller specialist ships.
      Real world capital warships tend to specialize only when absolutely forced to - a battleship can carry heavy guns for engaging other capital ships, anti-aircraft guns, lighter guns for engaging escorts etc, and can be armored against a variety of threats from shells to torpedoes to bombs, but a battleship can't _also_ be a carrier, due to the physical contradiction of a carrier needing a flat deck and vast amounts of empty space (though... on some level, many *were* equipped with seaplanes for use as scouts, and modern battlecruisers tend to be fitted with helicopters).

    • @TheArklyte
      @TheArklyte 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Apart from using medium range(for space combat) weapon and saying that it's long range, this doesn't seem so bad. I'd even say it's an improvement.
      P.S.: even lasers and particle accelerators can't hit anything reliably beyond 1 light minute ranges. Missiles travel many orders of magnitude slower, but they can adjust their course. Plus nothing stops you from mounting FTL drive on ICBM sized missile. If you can put one on X-Wing, then both FTL drive and processing unit of astromech droid ARE cheap enough for you to put onto a missile that carries enough warhead to decimate whole planet and enough false targets to fool CIWS of a capital ship that it is supposed to destroy. Unlike X-Wing that doesn't carry as much ordnance.
      A quick reminder to people out the that no matter how expensive F-22 is, when taken in full package(launcher vehicles and warheads) ICBMs are more expensive. Much more! And yet they exist. So FTL equiped missiles able to track targets for decades in would also exist in Star Wars.

      The tabletop game Dropfleet Commander addressed space-battle weapon ranges in its rules.
      Basically, beam weapons, rail guns, and so on do indeed have a practically infinite range - but good luck actually hitting anything capable of maneuvering, if you're opening fire at ranges measured in Astronomical Units. If you want your shots to actually connect, then you need to be close enough for your sensors to lock on properly, and for the shot travel time to be short enough that the enemy can't avoid being hit.
      That said, I think the HH series tends to fight at longer ranges. It's not uncommon for their cat-and-mouse maneuvers to be visible on the scale of entire systems.

    A ship like this would make a lot of sense. I could see the tactical use now. Take pot shots at an adversary until it is vulnerable. Once it is, send in fast moving assets to finish off the adversary -- say bombers escorted by fighters or corvettes in pack formation.

    If this was an official ship it would probably replace the Hammerhead and the Dreadnaught as my favourite ship in the universe. It is very stylish, very distinct and has a unique role. I had a similar idea of using ships with mass drivers and railguns in the Star Wars setting to outrange various conventional ships.

    About 20ish years ago my friend am myself were playing a space combat game called Starmada, I can't remember which edition, there have been many. (note this is a table top game). This system allow you to build you own ship designs. One of the ship I designed was the Legolass Class Sniper Ship. Four mass drivers, twin TD&R systems, and extend range on the mass drivers. It became a very feared ship, to the point, while it was make completely within the rules, some said I was stretching the rules with the design.

    Honestly, this is one of my favorite fan ships, solely for what it's role in a fleet. I loved the idea of having a ship doing long range attacks. Either assaulting something like a base from afar, or supporting other ships currently engaged with enemy ships while keeping a relatively safe distance from the front line. For a ship of it's type, which is a rarity, it's surprisingly great.

You can literally fish ships out of hyperspace and have these just bomb the shit out of it until it's rendered useless! Definitely should be added to cannon!

  • @ocadioan

    This seems like one of those types of ships that really start to excel the more you have of them. Since it can snipe enemy targets before they get into range, it can effectively reduce enemy numbers before they have a chance to do anything back. And if the enemy has too massive of a fleet, a fleet incorporating these can take out a portion of the enemy fleet and disengage before the enemy gets a chance to fire back.

    When I was playing my first campaign with the EoTH I went with a defensive playstyle. I'd focus all my defence into my border worlds. The peltast fit into my play style very well, and even if I only had a few assisting the defence I could take out fleets of vessels. I remember once I just barely came out with a victory after fighting off a death stack fleet that had multiple torpedo spheres.

    Why is it that the SW universe that the Clone Wars Republic capital ships, the Empire’s capital ships and apparently Thrawn’s EOTH ships don’t include PDCs, either as laser cannon or rail gun emplacements to handle snub fighters or small picket ships, like Corvettes & Frigates, working in an offensive role. Having a crap load of fighters on board or impressive shielding is only as good as having the fighters already flying CAPs or shields that can handle taking multiple hits from ion bombs, torpedoes or heavy ion cannon. Look at the Hoth evacuation. The ISD shields did not stop the ship from being disabled. The shields and more TIEs than god already flying in the combat space at Scarif didn’t protect the one ISD from being disabled by an element of Y-Wing bombers using ion ordnance. We all know how that ended. Having the ability to pick off small but apparently effective snub fighters by blowing them out of the sky before they can disable you goes a lot farther than the hope & pray strategy that either some of your own in snub fighters come to your aid or that your shields will hold up is naive.

    The ship would probably be extremely effective when grouped and have their barrage synced. What I would have liked to see on the ship design is a couple of forward facing main engines, this allows the ship to keep distance from the target but still have its main weapon pointed towards it.

  • @Jarsia
    @Jarsia 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I honestly love this. Holding planets would be a lot easier. Park 4-5 of these behind your starbase with a battlecruiser or 2 up front to soak up damage, and you have huge withering fire support killing off enemy capital ships before they can wear down your starbase or front line ships. Also if you have a tough system to crack you could bring in enough of these to max out the unit cap and snipe a few targets of opportunity before fleeing to hyperspace. Great design.

  • @coolminecrafthdminecraft1627
    @coolminecrafthdminecraft1627 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It appears to draw design aspects from the Pelta-class frigate from the Prequels with its longer length and extended rear sides, the Mammalian Titan from Stellaris for the primary cannon, and standard Imperial ships with the angular designs near the end, alongside the bridge. It also seems to draw inspiration from the Executor super star destroyer for it's engine bay, with the sides being much closer to the front with the center being far further behind. The Republic aspects suggest it was designed as the Empire neared its full, totalitarian rule, while not quite being the beast it is in Rebels, or A New Hope. It certainly feels like something that could be seen in an Official Star Wars show (i.e. the Bad Batch or the Mandalorian.), with the Star Wars-feel, while introducing a new, or at least uncommon, design aspect.

  • @Zeknif1

    It looks like a conceptual evolution of sorts of the Zann Consortium's Aggressor class... optimizing range but doing away with the 1-2 punch with the linked Ion/Plasma cannons due to the slow projectile speed effectively limiting its effective range and opting for a single hard hitting and long ranged plasma bolt to increase its effective engagement range.

    Interesting design and yeah the UNSC definitely came to mind as well as the First Order with there Xyston Class, to which I think would be better taking out capital ships instead of planets. As for covering canon or fanon ship designs, why not both? With fanon designs being used in comics and stuff it would be interesting to look into the original versions knowing the actual creators. With canon ones the more obscure or lesser known given more illumination as EC Henry has thus far only touched on a few as far as I know.

    It's pretty much similar design to the UNSC MAC guns in Haloverse.
    In a practical universe, railguns and hyper-ranged weaponry is GODLY, unless you can close on them with a hyper-fast ship capable of making micro-jumps. Far as I know, there are no such ships and no computer powerful enough to make the appropriate equations.
    In EVE ONLINE, they've countered this with ships capable of counter-ranging with a railgun ship at 250-300km(about maximum range(?) for non-lore.
    In David Weber's Honorverse, the very opening scene of one book is a battle showing off the prowess of range and remote-controlled missiles at tens of thousands of kilometers, using cloaked sensor arrays to relay data between the missiles and the ships they were launched from. Honestly, one of the greatest, if mind boggling, scenes I've ever read from the standpoint of nearly 30 different characters within 4 chapters... again, very OPENING scene of the book, taking some 30 pages(felt like more) just to convey "Range superiority" of one faction in a defensive action "Show of force" more or less. "Well! We aren't going to try and piss THOSE guys off again, they could have just killed us!"
    StarWars would probably be on the par of EVE ONLINE for space battles becoming the brawling masses that they turn into. Sure, you can TRY and snipe, and try to keep people at-range so your glass cannon doesn't get destroyed, but chances are you are going to be blobbed at one point or another, so get the damage in while you CAN. The Peltast would be comparable to the Caldari Naga, or the Caldari Rokh. PURE range, capable of denting ships of similar or bigger size, with minimal or no fighter-drone support.
    If it were me, I would probably streamline the Peltast with a drone control and launch bay. Keep about 100 spare drone fighters, launch as need-be, and also allow for the use of flying repair bots to either work in conjunction with defense drones, or even take over the drones to help with hull repairs and maintenance. This clears up needing anything more than a landing bay for shuttles. I don't know the innards of the Peltast, but I would assume there's a barracks for a security/marine troop force for at least 50-100 to repel borders.
