    I removed the clutch and drum sprocket off of an old Remington today, and replaced the same on an XL-12. Both the clutch and sprocket drum were in horrid condition. No surprise the chain would come off. I knew it was not good, but I was amazed how bad it was. This clutch and sprocket was not setup correctly, I made slight spacing changes, and now it works excellently. The clutch from the old Remington was like new and the exact same part, how lucky was that.

      @markluxton3402 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The sprocket drum that was on this XL-12 looked to me to have slipped so much that it had become so hot the drum was stretched outward and warped. The clutch itself was worn down so much, it is amazing that I had cut wood with it. There is a metal disk behind the clutch and I could see scratched in this disk, that the shoes/feet/pads??? were rubbing while expanding and contracting. I added a thin washer between, so no more rubbing. Another washer that had been used on both saws was too thick and misaligned the chain causing it to run way to close to the drum body, and rub. I found a washer half as thick and that cured it.

    With those clutches becoming difficult to find, would be interested to hear if there is a reasonable way to convert the saw to use a clutch that is more readily available.

      I would imagine that you would have to find one that is rated for the same rpm and the same diameter, then it's a matter of re-threading it to fit the spindle

    I snagged one of these same saws, believe a 1982, for $150. Everything works, from chain brake to kill switch. Plan on doing a 272 top end with a pop up piston.

    I immediately went to mess with the carburetor adjustments. Then remembered you had a bad spring on another saw. Checked it and sure enough--a broken spring. What a relief scared myself with vision’s of air leaks.

      J : about September, The parts kids at the biggest dealer in the area,,had no idea what, a vented Husky gas cap???..never made them, you mean an oil cap. No. Searched the internet, no luck,, but found a used one,finally. Not.. Went back to senior parts person ,with old cap for evidence,,fumble, fumble, O, old stock,, sorry. I just love computers diagrams..Not a believer. Please,,I've been here before. Ugh Called the Husky Shop, Grants Pass Oregon, they said how many. Shocked!! Me: You have them??. Yep brand new. Hallelujah. Gave 100 bucks for mine. Always wondered if that was a good deal, friend needed money. Run great, now doesn't leak, and still runs great.

    I had a 44 and the clutch spring was completely loosey goosey. Like beyond worn out. I just cut off a piece of the spring and made it tighter now works good. Maybe not the correct fix, but the cheapest.

    Back in the DAY scoring of the piston and cylinder were EXTREMELY RARE and they were using 30 weight motor oil. You GOOD oil doesn't seem to be holding up if you look at how many cylinders are scored now. There was a PLAN when they went to 50:1 and it wasn't GOOD for you but GREAT for THEM. Rebuild your saw every few years....or better yet, buy a new one.

    I thought a failed clutch was diagnosed by putting the chain under load in wood at more than 1/2 throttle and if the chain stopped moving under that load you knew your clutch was shot ?.. I dont know how he diagnosed this clutch.
