good cover up on the “diameter”
Went directly to the comments to see if ppl caught it lol
😂

What you mean?😊
" circumference" dubbed in like the TV version of The Matrix
Id like to congratulate it on its graduation.
DOT and Geotechnical inspectors will use these for measurments along roadways. We call them measuring wheels.
Yeah... He said that in the video...
I mean, I've got a modernized analog traveler I use to mark out track and field events. You roll it on the ground and the ratio gears inside rotate the numbers to tell you how many feet and inches you've gone.
I was thinking the same thing. I worked for a short bit at an electrical surveying company, and we had those as a backup, although we were mostly using rangefinders as what we were doing specifically did not need that much precision.
We have pen-sized digital one's now for measuring distances on a set of blueprints. You just select the scale of the prints on the tool, and then you use the tip to roll the distance you wish to measure. The tool then displays the actual distance on screen. It's really useful.
Not many joking comments on this one, but the overlay of the word circumference was almost-ly not noticeable. But, sir, I heard it... and I ... Loved it. Makes me want to know what you said in it's place to warrant the need to overdub it. Carry-on, Sir Wright!
Also, I built my first jointers mallet last week, out of beech, and damn is it sexy!
I kept saying diameter. did not catch it untell the edit. sounds like a fun build!
@@WoodByWrightHowTodiameter, circumference, you're only off by a factor of 3.
...14
We used a similar piece of equipment in primary school to measure the school yard. It was called a trundle wheel and it made a click sound every rotation which in our case was every metre.
A much smaller version of this was used in the golden era of paper maps to plan a journey on a map.
Maybe tháts why these things are called travellers.
What a cool invention. So strange it isn't used anymore.
Why would it still be used? We have far more accurate, far more convenient tools, you can even get a reasonably accurate measurement using a phone camera.
as far as i can see this one is pretty accurate and convenient, and it gives you less opportunity to slip up at every 1 circumference interval than trying to use a yardstick or ruler to measure something many times longer than your ruler
plus it looks nice
so simple yet so clever. This is awesome
A surveying team was in my neighbourhood a few days ago, and they had one. I didn't get to see it up close, unfortunately.
It's a really handy tool to have when you need it.
I’m going to 3d print one! This would be super nice for my sewing projects
We use them in the blacksmith shop to measure things like spirals and drawn curves. They're awesome.
love the artistic choice on the spokes
The curvy spokes are to keep the spokes from breaking during casting and machining. It does look very cool though.
@@techristopher8077 that’s cool. They are functional!! How does it prevent breaking? Does it add springiness?
I have a beautiful one I purchased last year.
True, we still use them on the ground to messure lengh. Road workers often use them.
The pun at the end took a second to hit, but was good. Ive seen tape measures with a secondary "digital" traveler that gives a second measurement on a screen based on how much of the tape has been pulled out. Its funny how technology will go back to an old concept and revamp it to fit a similar need to fix even small inconveniences
built-in seasonal adjustment so in the summer when you're working on the outside of your house it makes everything bigger and in the winter it makes the inside smaller. that way it all fits together
I've got the wheel to one of the ones for measuring miles. It has a neat (though unfortunately rusted immobile) gear box that turned the mile counter for every 15 turns of the wheel.
I can't believe that this is considered obsolete today! That would be so useful and convenient today!
they still exist for measuring large areas they just have numbers that goes up 1 number every meter it moves instead of you having to count it
Some use them with can of spray paint to measure off logs.
Useless in a wood shop but pretty helpful for layout on land
They're really common when surveying, or laying out plots or marking the edges of where the basement pit/foundation trench needs to be dug.
@@RapTapTap69 I'd beg to differ. I'd use that thing quite a bit. Heck I have seen one at the antique store and it's in useable condition.... though they want $80 for it.
That fade-out had me lolling for sure!
Muy Interesante nunca habia visto ,ni escuchado de este tipo de herramienta ...gracias por demostrar y compartir ...😊
We use travlers in the electrical trade they just have a ticker that measures inches and it's the size of a sedan tire good for measuring wire runs
God damn, I remember using the big version of those in school, still can't remember exactly why 😂
For those born after smartphones became available: Small versions are used (or used to) on maps to measure distances.
I worked as a construction electrician and for mapping out lengths of wire to be placed underground my boss has me using a digital version of this tool. Pain in the ass since the handle is only like a foot long
That shirt though lol. Classic dad joke.
Highlander is also a traveler. I seen it in the movies and miniseries.
Romans had ones for roads and buildings that dropped a pebble every certain amount
Fella I watch on TH-cam uses one to measure outside circumference of wagon wheels
You can also find it in the torture chambers at Mt. Gelmir in Elden Ring. What do you think it's doing there?
I use the modern version to do estimates for cable length.
I use one of them. I made it. Mine is small. I make wrought iron
Electricians use them to measure stretched out wire (digital ones of course).
We always called them trundle wheels
😂How do you fix a “flat”?!
At a construction site you yell out: Headache!!!
This makes the person duck and cover…
But this is actually the very high end Version. I know this from old Workshops as a wooden wheel with a stick and on the wheel you write with caulk the turnings of the wheel and you mark the last partically turn.
This one is about middle of the road, but most of the common ones were just a simple smooth wheel you would mark on. the really simple ones were just 8 spokes with points on the end. but there were some that were very fancy with multiple hands and even sliding ring rules.
Cool never seen this makes alot lf semse
Now someone needs to connect it to a digital readout so that you can roll it around and read out the measurement
"Circumference"
excellent editing and based humor.
I see them use those for sports sometimes
They used one of these at my highschool "graduation", they gave me an inch and I took a mile.
Funfact. The Egyptians prob. Used one too for planning the sides of the pyramids. And since its easyest to just work with full numbers the lengh of the sides can be devided by Pi.
Fun fact the invention of the wheel was after the building of the great pyramid
I thought the traveler was a space being who helped Wesley Crusher find his true destiny.... 🤔
Ohh, everyday carry types still use something similar, except coin sized. I think they're called measuring coins.
Are you saying what I think you're saying about carrying firearms?
@@TheLongDonNot necessarily, there's just guys that always have cool little gadgets on em and shit like that called their EDC (everyday carry). Things like a flashlight, fire starter, little tactical items like the coin he's talking about, etc. It's just what they have on them every day.
@@unoriginalcontent346 I hope that's what he means lmao
@TheLongDon yeah he's definitely talking about EDC and that community. Firearm daily carriers will often see them be referred to as concealed carry, open carry, or some acronym that refers to their specific license. Not carry by itself.
@@khrishp No, firearms use EDC all the time. "My EDC (/Every day carry, depending on who you're watching) is a CZ P10C". Firearms is arguably where EDC came from
I dunno I see modern versions of this all the time in construction. Anywhere that needs a measurement longer than a tape measure can do but where it's not worth a laser system.
Right on. They are still in use in several trades. The difference is the trades they were first made for don't exist anymore.
Is there a reason why the spokes are wavy, or did the makers just think it was fun?
It used to be that all tools made had artistic flair to them extra details were added just for the appearance.
My family name comes from barrel making
I have a feeling it would have trouble measuring inner diameters 🤔
As long as the handle fits in it does well
I would think that the movable indicator is to keep track of the endpoint.
If the wheel had a start point marked on it then yes. This one does not. They're used in a bunch of different ways though.
Infinite tape measure!!!!
Circumference
So where's Aether?
What kind of baggage?
You know. The kind that a traveler brings
Why did we get rid of this
We did not. it just evolved to fit different trades as the ones this was made for do not exist any more
Na, it's a cast iron frisbee!!!
But it didn't fly....
On the frizbee golf course, do you yell "TWO" because it's a two foot follower, or "FOUR" in honor of golf, or scream "DUCK!" if it gets close to someone? 😂
Damn bro traveler done got a lot smaller and a lot dimmer since the witness eh?
They came in many sizes.
I am guessing baggage was some sort of joke but I don't get it.
It's called a traveler and people are called travelers when they're moving from place to place and travelers normally carry clothes and stuff
the best jokes have to be explained!
@@teutonictobacco3545 well ofcourse actual travelers often have baggage I also know it means issues...how does it apply to this instrument? or throwing randomly associated words together funny to most?
@@bruceforsman4812the instrument is also called a traveler
I was afraid this was going to be a sovereign citizen video.
SO THE FUCKIN WEAPON GHIZA WHEEL I USE IN ELDEN RING IS A TAPE MEASURE???
Used meter and yard sticks in primary school
That thing does not look 2ft in diameter
circumference to diameter
Surveyors don't,we pace or use our other equipment. Engineers do use the wheel sometimes.
I'm surprised I didn't hear this from wranglerstar
maybe not so common in a shop but people very much use these, i used them throughout engineering school- why are you sending the message that theyre obsolete???
they are not obsolete at all. they have just moved to new professions. the original ones that this were made for do not exist any more.
