My da had a foldable ruler he inherited from my grampa when he died. It had a screwed on lip. Pretty much looked homemade. Never saw anything like before or after. But he had lots of unique tools. Crazy stuff I've never seen before. I got some of them when my dad passed. I have this tear drop shaped scraper that other contractors have offered money for. It's to prep plaster for patching cracks. I use it to remove glaze from windows. Tears it up. Old tools especially the home made ones are the best

You need to make sure the lip is securely attached. Any movement of the lip could result in loose joints. Everyone know that loose lips sink ships! ;-)

Machinist's hook rules have the same principle. Usually smaller & higher precision than is useful for woodworking though.
