THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF FERDINAND BAC HD 1080p

  • Ferdinand Bac seems to be considerably better known as a designer of gardens than as an illustrator. Some accounts only mention his illustration in passing.
    Consequently there are quite a few gaping holes in my knowledge of his life and work, for which I apologise in advance.
    And although I have nothing against garden design I hope to redress this outrageous imbalance and show you the work of someone I believe to be one of the most under-appreciated comedic and erotic illustrators to have emerged from La belle Époque.

    Well, yep...I'm a convert. These were delightful. I flashed on Charles Dana Gibson on some of Bac's pen work; don't know if it was the poses, the female subject matter (the "Gibson Girl"), hair styles, whatever, but the pen work is spot on. I wonder if Gibson was familiar with Bac's work? Superior draftsmanship, too. As always, a lovely ending to a Monday with some fine art and education. Bravo, Pete! Stay safe and Happy Easter!

      @petebeard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Doug, and thanks as ever for your appreciation. I have no idea whether Gibson would have been aware of Bac, or vice versa.
      As you say the similarity may just have been historical. I must say it's one of the many frustrating aspects of this research that we know so little about how much illustrators knew about each other in global terms back then. I hope you are enjoying life in France - I bet the sun is shining.

    The energy in his line work seems to depend largely upon the tools in which he used. Frequently staged poses retain energy when he uses looser mediums, it appears. His brushwork seems much looser with the line flowing more freely and organic. This gave his work more energy than his tighter line art, which appears stiffer. His caricature and cartoonish works also seems to have allowed him a little more freedom of movement, and the poses seem a bit more natural.

    • @petebeard

I had no idea he had done such a variety of creative works, an incredible talent. By the way have you done one on Nestor Martin-Fernandez de la Torre ? He was from the Canary Islands, born in 1887 began producing work as a teen and was involved in both a symbolist and modernist art movements. I'd also like to know if you are familiar with Josep Maria Sert ?? All the best and keep these wonders coming.

      Hello and thanks a lot for your comment. And even more thanks for those two names, neither of which I had previously encountered. A quick google reveals they both created some great work, but I'll have to dive deeper to see if they qualify. A casual glance suggests they might both be considerably more artists than illustrators, but if I'm wrong they will feature. Even if they don't it's always a genuine pleasure to learn of talents that are new to me, so thanks again.

    It's always difficult for Western artists specializing in sharp-eyed depiction of the frivolities of 'society' to gain the same sort of appreciation for their 'serious' work -- like the Japanese ukiyo-e masters, and for the same reason. But the most incredible thing about Bac is -- I believe you gave 1939 as the date of his last published work and nothing but tossed-off sketches on to-hand paper for the next THIRTEEN YEARS? Were his health and mind still there? did he perhaps consider that time had moved irretrievably on and had enough finances to accept that? Intriguing questions.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello again and those are interesting questions which I wouldnt even attempt to answer. When so little is recorded about someone such as Bac so much about him has to be supposition. My guess is he just got tired of drawing and preferred to write instead. But we'll never know.

  • @Cmdtheartist
    @Cmdtheartist 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think Bac always had it in him to create the level of art exhibited in his later career. Maybe he was afraid to stand out. His caricatures, never meant for publication, were loose and fun, and it's always easier to work without pressure or judgement. His artwork of houses and gardens are wonderful.
