  • Despite his significant contribution to the development of humorous and satirical illustration, outside France Jean-Jacques Grandville doesn't get anything like the recognition or admiration his work demands. And it was his inclusion in my recent Aesop's Fables video which reminded me just how significant that contribution was, and still is. I hope you'll agree.

    I don't know how he carried on working with so much tragedy at such a young age. Maybe his focus on his work was cathartic. But it's hard to deny he had great talent that rivaled his torment.
    Thank you for another eye opening & informative video Pete.

    Another wonderful video, Mr Beard. Thank you.
    I love Les Fleurs Animees and have seen so many editions and even some of the original 'livraisons' in doily like wrappers. Each different. Each unique. I have never bought because to me there is no 'definitive' edition and this is compounded by the chromolithos almost immediately after the steel engravings neither of which Grandville lived to see published. I have a nice facsimile which conveys well the book's intentions and has the silly Delford commentaries translated into English. I love picking it up and admiring the exquisite invention and the tad surreal madness. I consider him a giant in the art of Illustration and thank you again for such a knowledgeable and insightful account of his work and life.

      Hello again and thanks once more for your comment and insight. I found it interesting that even in the flower images - which I'm guessing were aimed more at the female reader - he couldn't help including some little disturbing elements and animal characters. I am actually familiar with one of the pieces you presented, the one with the three cats, one of them a devil cat and another an angel cat but I had not seen any of his other work. What a talented and imaginative illustrator! How heartbreaking and tragic were the losses he suffered and his early demise.

    A wonderful discovery for me. I'm no illustrator, but I do sometimes enjoy putting bird heads on vintage photographs in photoshop - the hoopoe-headed man at the beginning particularly charmed me (I'm also a huge fan of hoopoes). What I've found so striking about your biographical format is how the collection serves as an astonishing sample of human life. All of the subjects are illustrators. But their life paths are as varied as can be found in any collection of people and are thus absolutely fascinating.

    What a compelling body of work! And seeing so many of his images here together with your wonderful commentary - well, one cannot help but see Grandville’s obvious influence on later generations of painters and illustrators. There were moments in your video montage where I was thinking of Rossetti’s parody sketches that featured his pet wombat - then of the print of Albert Lambron’s “A Pest” that I have in my living room - then Arthur Rackham’s delightfully wacky anthropomorphic critters that I spent hours and hours with during my childhood - and of course John Tenniel, Ernest Shepard, Garth Williams, etc etc etc - the list goes on. I particularly remember the pictures of frogs and alligators in men’s clothing. I had no clue what the words meant, but I loved the pictures! My grandmother has been dead for over forty years now and all her belongings have been divided up amongst her friends and a few relatives. I wonder what happened to that book.

    What a wonderful illustrator (if a sad life). Thanks for reviving him Pete. Pretty striking among his insect and insect human hybrids (except for a few grasshoppers) are the beetles. He must have agreed, as Haldane noted, with the Creator's 'inordinate fondness for beetles'. I like the fact that when you feature just one artist in your video, we learn so much more!! Two things are sad to me: that he was often uncredited for his work (maddening) & that so much death occurred in his family (heartbreaking). I agree with your term "visually unsettling" regarding Granville's work, but think it's good to push people out of their artistic comfort zones sometimes, though the king didn't seem to like being compared to a pear, lol. My favorites of his work were when he depicted animals as they really were, but with a certain humanness in their expressions. Thanks again for all your hard work. Your videos make my whole week.

    In fact, Les Fleurs Animees is highly satirical but you have to understand the visual puns based on a combination of old poetic metaphors, floral morphology and French fads in horticulture, cosmetics and medicine. It's all about flower spirits who want careers but their success is limited by their own growth habits and obvious limits to female emancipation in the 19th century. Hemlock becomes a professional poisoner. A Christmas cactus leaves her hot habitat to run off to Paris with a botanist. The cold slows her down so all she can do is become a concierge clutching a pretty, miniature, enameled brazier to keep warm. The water lily becomes a nun and look at how Grandville turns the lily pads and petals into a habit complete with a rosary of seeds. The devil tempts her in the form of an insect but she's so pure he gives up (no pollination here).

    Another great exploration into an under appreciated artist. I'm always amazed at the draftsmanship of these French illustrators; Doré, Daumier, etc. Quick question: did some of his author collaborators request Granville specifically for his work or was it luck or happenstance? Always curious about the role of the writer in situations like these (being someone who works on both sides of the fence, as it were). Thanks as always, Pete, for a great video.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hello again, and the answer to your question is... I don't know. But having looked into this period in Europe in reasonable detail I'm happy to make a (mildly educated) guess. In Grandville's case his collaborations were I think most likely the result of drunken evenings in some bar or other where creatives of all stripes might gather and exchange ideas. And to an extent he was a writer himself, even if ony as a journalist. But when working on established literature such as Defoe, Swift and La Fontaine these were undoubtedly commissions emanating from the publishers. In the case of the lives of animals book it was his publisher who commissioned the various writers to accompany Grandville's images. Apparently Balzac was livid about this pastiche of his book, and I know for sure that many writers of the time hated having their work illustrated as they felt it devalued their art - and of course had to share royalties. That's a pretty long and inconclusive answer and I should probably have just stuck with 'I don't know'.
      Best wishes
      Pete

    This is wonderful. I knew a bit of Grandville's illustrations of La Fontaine's fables (the New York Review of Books used to include them as filler), but this goes far beyond those. I wonder whether Lewis Carroll might not have gotten some ideas from Grandville's imaginative pictures--I saw in your video a "Battle of the Cards" that suggests the end of Alice in Wonderland, and Alice meets gentlemen with fish or frog heads,, illustrated of course by John Tenniel, but quite close to the Grandville effect.

    He died in 1847 and Alice in Wonderland was published in 1865. Did he inspire that art style or do you think he followed some trends of those you might've seen in the Alice book?

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and the connection wasn't coincidental. John Tenniel made no secret of his great admiration for both Grandville's imagination and technique. Some of the stylistic similarity was down to the common use of engraving to reproduce the original drawings but even so he undoubtedly was an inspiration to Tenniel and many other 19th century illustrators across Europe, and even the USA.

      Hello again, and for the time he lived in those deaths were far from unusual. I know that doesn't make it OK but here's a 'fun' fact I just shared with another viewer you might appreciate. My father was born in 1910 and was one of nine children. Only four of them made it to adulthood. And that was par for the course among the British working class at the time.

      Yes, life can be short and brutish. As Grandville said "Death takes a break to sharpen its scythe".
      As a young child remember my mother off handily saying to me as I was eating breakfast "Yea, you had a brother." Turns out during WWII before I was born the kid didn't make it through.

      @@vincentgoupil180 I read that some historians believe that Napoleon's wallpaper actually attributed greatly to his death, for that same reason of arsenic poisoning.
      (I also do think we have all learned from history and science that it is best not to marry our cousins.)
      My 1970's generation has survived asbestos, leaded paint and gasoline, talcum powder, exposure to DDT and other pesticides, etc.; albeit to the detriment of our overall health.
