  • I'm constantly surprised by how many great 20th century illustrators Ive managed to be completely ignorant of before I started making these videos. And many of these discoveries have yielded some breathtaking examples of illustrated work, published in any number of formats and areas of expression. Niklaus Stoecklin is yet another who more than proves this point as far as I'm concerned, and should be considerably better known and admired than he currently is. Maybe this video will help.

Your last line in the video, "... we are current settling for considerably less than second best" is so true. It's a shame imaginative advertising images, such as those by Stoecklin, are no longer being created. Thank you for another visit to a wonderful bygone age.

Hello and yes it's sad but true about the world of advertising. It was a real tragedy when lazy art directors started to favour photography over illustration.

Wonderful. Your final statement summed up my feelings too. I'm sure we're about to see a deluge of AI generated images in advertising - removing what little art still remained in an always-tainted creative arena. But people like Stoeklin were allowed or even encouraged to make beautiful and intriguing images to shift products.

Don't underestimate artists because they work in a commercial area because they can make money doing so. If nothing else it provides them with a living. Most artists in the past had to find employment doing portraits of wealthy or powerful men and women whose looks or personal habits might get them cancelled in these days. Even those who painted religious scenes might well have been happier revelling in more worldly or secular scenes but these didn't pay well or pay at all. Raphael, I believe, used a prostitute as his model for the Madonna.
Money influences art and always has and always will. And it usually rewards talent.

    • @thecaveofthedead
      @thecaveofthedead 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'd never underestimate the artists. The taint I refer to comes from the people with the money. Be they Dukes or ad execs, they have no justification for deciding what gets made except their very special and nasty interests@@frankmorlock1403

Hello and many thanks for your dedication to the channel. I hope you'll be happy to know there are still a vast number waiting in the wings and in the pipeline. I certainly have a wildlife (as in animals) project on the go, and I'm considering another on the illustration of flora. Whether that counts as biological I'm not sure. I'm on shaky ground here regarding terminology but I think of biological as more diagrammatic or images of what a horse's digestive tract looks like, and that's definitely outside my frames of reference.

Interesting showcase on this artist Mr. Beard! I must agree with your last statements, thinking about it, I can't remember the last piece of ad work that wasn't just a picture of a guy using the product smiling, after a while all starts looking the same on the endless sea of mundane ads, things like Niklaus work not only helped distinguish the product but it also gave a little of life and variety to the city landscape.

I'm spending weekend at my dacha, so watched this episode on the phone, but I'll sure watch it again on the wide screen when I'm back tomorrow.
To me this is a discovery. They gave us a brief survey on Swiss graphic design, but for some strange reason this artist was not even mentioned. Outstanding works, especially posters. Another thing is that something tells me this guy was introduced to mushrooms. Nowadays when one can easily order by mail all necessary materials to grow (say) Psilocybe Cubensis at his home this doesn't look surprising, but what they used to have in Switzerland back then?
Anyway, thanks again Pete and I hope to see many, many videos like this from you!

Hello and thanks for the comment and very interesting observations. I was taught the principles of Swiss graphic design when at college but it was all the typographical stuff. I don't recall a simgle image that wasn't photographic. I'm pleased to say I've got a couple more similarly illustrative Swiss designers in the pipeline too. And regarding the mushrooms one of his major clients was Roche pharmaceuticals, which may have given him easier access to such things. Who knows?

So someone else had to do everything else. The list of all the mediums you mentioned he used could fill a room. All the different styles he used really sets him a part from other creators. I thought it would be neat to hear what he had to say about art, but his book had no words. Incredible body of work though, thanks.

Hi Pete. What a wonderful illustrator was Niklaus Stoecklin! WOW, I loved all his work, but especially his surrealist ones, made me think of Rene Magritte a lot. And his super clean and precise technique allowed him to make the objects look heavy, like real volumes. But also it was so wonderful to see his other solutions that were more graphic and flat. Another great illustrator/artist I didn't know. Thanks a lot, Pete.

An artist of truly awesome flexibility in style, and this is an age where the quickest way to recognition is to become, as it were, a caricature of oneself! I will name only Kincaid. I'm very impressed with how Stoeklin incorporated the old German handwriting -- so angular and seemingly inartistic -- into so many of his works. (yes, I have old family papers done in this lettering) The 'artification' (our time has seen far more grotesque coinages!) of advertising; as opposed to the Warholian 'advertisingization' of art!

What a wonderfully inventive artist. This si what annoys me about Ipswich Art College in the late seventies. No damn library that you could explore except after a traipse to the main college and then you should be having your lunchbreak! What did we do at the main college? Sculpture department was over there and Monday afternoons we traipsed over there for 'Liberal Studies' which was a complete waste of time! I would have much rather have spent Monday afternoon researching artists like this. Now, through these marvellous videos, I am finding more artists. Late, but extremely welcome!

@@petebeardIt's not your fault, it's youtube and how it's set up. The best thing you can do is ask your viewers to like, subscribe and leave a comment about the video (you could ask us a question about each Illustrator for example). The resulting increased activity on your channel from viewers then tells the algorithm that people are engaging a lot with your content, so it promotes it more. It's tedious to have to do this but unfortunately it's the way TH-cam, Instagram and other apps and websites work at the moment with algorithms deciding what content gets shown to who.

This man is truly amazing. Thanks to the Covid, I've spent the last several years listening to music by composers I never heard of and watching videos about artists and illustrators I never heard of. Many deserve to be much better known. You've done a wonderful job in bringing forgotten artists back to light. I got interested in illustration as an author because I was looking for attention grabbing art as covers for my books (mostly plays and translations of plays.) Until recently I would pour over images available on the internet and I flatter myself I was getting pretty good at it. Your videos were very helpful in this regard. Then, about six months ago I got interested in AI. Unlike those who view AI as a threat, I see it as an empowerment. I know what I want, because I wrote or translated the book but now, instead of rummaging through cyberspace to find an image, I can generate an image that suits my intentions. I don't always get what I want but I usually get something suitable
if not exact. If I want something in the style of Dali or Michelangelo AI will cough something up that could have been by that artist. We will be seeing more beautiful images, not less.

@@nokomarie1963 Until AI came along I was looking for Public Domain images because I couldn't afford to pay an artist to illustrate the works I wanted covers for, Thanks to AI, I can be the artist. In fact, I flatter myself I'm so good at it, that I am seriously thinking of selling my art work rather than my plays or translations. Selling art is much easier to do because the public can decide immediately if they like the artwork,; not so with books which must actually be read. Having a good cover clearly plays a part in a decision to purchase a book. Plays do not sell well, foreign plays in translation even less so even when the names of the author are familiar like Victor Hugo or Alexandre Dumas or Leo Tolstoi. Accordingly, though I have been published by small presses, my publishers usually find public domain works for use as covers. Publishers certainly are not going to risk any money employing artists to create covers for works that won't sell much in any event. No artist is losing money because of this. Ther realities of the marketplace are not going to be changed by AI. Good images will sell well, others less so.

Hello and many thanks for your appreciation and comment, and I've been really pleased with the response to this video in particular. At the risk of starting a fight though, I have to register my complete dissent from your praise for AI. I'm not a religious man but I smell the work of the devil in this development, whether it's in art, literature or music. In my book, and I suspect that of most viewers of the channel, these artforms are expressions one way or another of the human soul. And having seen some of the results of AI image creation that's the one ingredient that can't be replicated. So ultimately it's at best a sophisticated form of clipart. Sorry to rant but I feel very strongly about this trend. You, of course, are absolutely entitled to not share my sentiments, and it's always possible I'm just being a luddite.

@@petebeard Why don't you give it a try and see if you still feel that way ? My reaction at first was a bit skeptical. I recall many years ago that Isaac Asimov told a colleague "We've got computers that can compose music now." And his colleague's reply was--"Maybe you'll get computers to listen it." And for many years that was my attitude. But my attitude has changed.
When I was young (around 14-15) I wanted to be Michelangelo. My High School had an art course with a fine teacher, but I soon realized I would never be Michelangelo and gave up the idea for doing things I could do, and do pretty well. But now, at 82, I find I can turn out work that is compelling, attention grabbing and sometimes as powerful as anything the masters did. For example while I respect Egon Schiele's talent as an artist I find some of his work very difficult to look at. But, I found that in doing portraits his technique can often bring out mental pain in his subjects. And somehow AI manages replicate this. One of the best things I've done with AI was of a famous female movie star in Schiele's style and she looked beautiful but tortured with some inner grief. It may not be her soul, she may never have suffered unspeakable grief but the AI generated image makes it look as if she had. And it looks beautiful. And beauty after all is said and done is a joy forever

I saved the 'mourning cloak' butterfly. There's always so much given to what a person's 'style' is, and even though he's recognizable for some of his work, ie the product posters, he generally just let his vast imagination rule his works, allowing whatever struck his fancy that day - maybe from some other artist's work he saw or just an idea he'd had and wanted to try out - and could do it. That's how artists should be allowed to work. Instead of being slotted, used up, and tossed aside for the next clever hand. I'm glad he had a long and stable career at doing what he loved from a very young age. Lucky bastard, eh.

Hello. It's called 'Nordic' and it's by somebody calling themselves Crowander. You can find - and download it - from the youtube music library.

Not just wonderful art but also fabulous typography. Can we assume he did both or was someone else doing the lettering?

Hello and thanks for the comment. That's one of many things I failed to discover conclusively about his working methods, but responsibility for the total design was generally the norm in Europe at the time. And there is at least one piece that this was the case with the visual and finished printed poster for Eisenwek Clus transmission in 1925 that's in the video.
