- I found this Rust-Oleum ColorShift Spray Paint at Walmart and I'd never seen it before. Seemed like something worth trying out! Do you like it or not?

I gotta say I’m actually happy with Rustoleum & the quality as of late. I used to use Krylon but noticed it hasn’t been laying on as smoothly as of late. The Rustoleum has stepped it up
Warm up the can in hot water for 15 mins before you spray, It always comes out muuuuuch smoother
I used that color a few years ago for my welding hood. Pretty dope. The color shift effect looked great, especially after wiping it down with Plexus every 1 or 2 weeks

Been praying for a spray paint like this for years. You should make an oil spill mask, maybe part 6 inspired. Make it look all burnt and dissolved

I'm wondering what it'd be like with a blue base coat, because I'm aiming for a somewhat brighter, blue iridescent effect.

This stuff works pretty good, I’ve used it on a guitar and bass.

No it’s not Walmart paint it’s simple sold there geez is it me or just commonsense in rare supply these days
I love that color shift paint I used it on a hockey mask and it looked so cool I called it the cosmic killer
I'm impressed .rustoleum has always been my favorite of spray paints
See and I'm always a Krylon guy for solid colors, but Rust-Oleum makes some great effect paints and texture stuff.

I do airbrushing for miniature games. But a lot of the times the spray can is much faster because you don’t have to clean it out when you’re done.

Oooo that's a cool way to do a NES Jason mask
So I customise hocks myself, one I've always wanted to try to make but don't have the tools for right now is an 8-Bit mask like the one from the Funko Pop design. If you want a real challenge, maybe give it a go. I think you would be able to pull it off

I’m painting a gaming controller (Wii Zapper). What pad are you using to sand the mask? How perfect does the primer need to be to avoid sanding imperfections showing in the final result?
Limited with paint. First can sputtered droplets. I took a bunch of the primer off using 400, 600, 1000, then 2000 and reprimed it. Still showing droplets after 3 coats and wet sanding with 1000. I really don’t want to sand it all the way back to nothing. That would mean this project would take even longer (been about 9 months to get here). Let’s just say it won’t happen unless I work with what I have: 1/3 can of black primer, 1 can minus 2 small tests of Blue Galaxy, and R-O painter’s touch 2x gloss for the clear. The controller is a Nintendo Wii Zapper that is broken down into 7 major pieces plus the lil’ trigger.
My thought is to save paint I can finish it assembled. I would assemble it, sand it, maybe a small coat of primer, sand again, then apply the color shift and clear as intended. I’ve been back and forth between painting it assembled or in pieces as I’ve done with the priming. I have the space to hang it for painting. TIA, dude!
Edit: My primer is black R-O sandable primer and…it’s matte 😮 I bought it at a hardware store on the recommendation of one of their paint experts, so I really hope I didn’t fall for some BS.

I tried it out and I get better color, and overall shift from using matte black. Still.....thanks for the idea Big Hush. I put a set of vs chevrons on, and I am going to do one with part 5 chevrons.
I was looking for a transparent color changing paint. I want to be able to see the transparent layer from certain angles only, like a hologram. Any suggestions?

How long after spraying the black did you wait to spray the colorshift ? And how long after the colorshift to spray the clear ?
Been around for years, then when I wanted it, I couldn't find it. Sadly no longer sold in Canada, some sorta chemical that doesn't pass health/safety here but apparently does in the USA. Sigh... needed it for a guitar, had to change to something else.

What does the last coat of laquer do? Is that like a sealant for the spray paint coat?
Yes it's a clear sealant just for some scratch protection and shine... but not required! Really a personal preference

No reason to spray over GLOSS black base coat aside from you should never spray a coat over any gloss if you want proper adhesion

Yes! Create a black base before applying the color-shift.

The results are amazing, I have questions tho. How can I add a black color on top and have the color underneath show but not as vibrant?
Adding black over it is going to negate the color shift.
On my can it says to only apply it over a black base coat.
Does anyone know if rust-oleums custom lacquer clear matte would work over this??
Can you try that over flat black? Or charcoal!
Maybe. The can only says Black basecoat so I'm sure you could play around with that

meh i painted a motorcycle gas tank, was nice for a few hrs but then as it dries it gets lighter and loses the effect , the cap color doesn't match the final result
That's interesting. Mine is still holding up, but the mask stays inside. I wonder if long term sunlight exposure changes things?
@@BigHush idk but the color difference is substantial it wasn't even long term the color lightened up overnight, i'm gonna try and redo it just because i really like the initial result maybe use less coats , i did 4 medium coats over the black base
I just had to take mine back to black. Too many coats and it looks too green to me. I think I might pick up some matte black tomorrow and see what result it gets.
I just bought that Dremel tool , what pad did you use on your mask ?
Nice! I used the brown heavy duty pads. I know the tool is basically for cleaning and scrubbing dirt, but that heavy duty pad does JUST enough to act like a 300-400 grit sandpaper. I still run across the surface with real sandpaper afterward but the Versa saves a lot of time.

So far YES. I'm not sure what grit this attachment is designed to simulate, but it basically sands like a 400 Grit sandpaper. Doesn't rough up the surface at all, but still takes the shine off. I need to do a "scratch test" with my fingernail though. That's how I know what works. When I don't sand a mask and only apply spray paint, it can be scratched off with a fingernail and minimal pressure. When I sand masks with 120 grit paper before painting, then it's almost impossible for me to scrape it off with my fingernail. I hope this passes that test because it's MUCH less annoying to sand masks with this tool.
@@BigHush is there not different grit attachments? Seems like an obvious gap in the market if there isn't. Either way it looks way easier and less time consuming!

It says Blue Cosmos on the can. I didn't see any other options in the store though
what if you use matte black as the base coat?
I'm assuming it would work too. I had some duplicolor color shift paint years ago that the base black was more of a matte finish.
The can stops spraying after about 2 to 3 minutes... leaving the can entirely full and doesn't work after that?
No the can does not stop spraying. It works just fine until empty unless there is a problem. That could happen. It has happened to other paints.
