I kinda knew the glow pigment wasn't going to affect the colors, but was taken aback by just how much GLOW they still had considering how meh most glow pigment is.
But in a sense a lot ofglow pigment is actually kind of "clear" when it dries unless it doesn't have other colors to contend with. The pigment isn't very visible to the human eye at that point. Kinda like how certain other white stuff can be actually clear. Like with acrylic paints, you can add a "medium" to them that thins them down without losing consistency as much as with water, so that they go on with more transparency so that if you're building up colors, the under layers still play a role.
Also Elmer's school glue is very white until it dries.
But seriously. I've never seen anything glow this intensely while being mixed with another color. That's impressive, and I want a car with this now.

I'd like to see how much the glow pigment influences the shade. Like a side by side with and without. I say this, because I think it'd be amazing to use a glow mix to make a design that is invisible during the day and visible at night. But to do that and have it be invisible, the shades would have to be nearly identical.

    • @adde9506

    • @radbug

what you could try doing instead is this:
sppray just the standard pearls base coat over everything. then mask off half of your design on the body with tape or vinyl or something, then spray the glow pigment mixed with an evaporative thinner to atomize it (just like DipYourCar did to paint pearls over musou black), and spray only the design area with the glow

I've done this with mica pigments and epoxy resin, you can add 2 to 1, glow powder 2, color 1, (even 3 to 1), and in resin the glow does not affect the color at all. Color shift included... I would like to try temp changing pigments, with color...I also would like to say, there's blue and purples glow pigments, they have worked the same. But I did like you, kept green base with the green glow, blue with blue, and purple with purple or pink. With no change in the color, including color shift pigments. But with really cool glows.

    What would be really cool...
if you paint the car normally and put the glow affect only on certain areas of the car. Cool ideas for this:
    - A "Starsky and Hutch" style racing stripe on the side / roof that you only see in the dark.
    - Apply it only around where any chrome and logos are - and around windows
    - Do one of those "fire paint jobs", but have the flames glow in the dark.
    - Do only around edges with a black background, giving your car the "Tron" look at night.
    so many ideas

I’m no expert either, but if it works the same as make up, the black base actually helps the pigment pop. It’s a trick to use black paint or eyeliner under really colorful (especially the pigments that have sheen or shift) eyeshadows to make the most out of the color. .....it’s late and I’m so tired. I hope this helped. I did not do my best at explaining.

I really enjoy all your videos but glow in the dark stuff has always been fascinating to me ever since I was a kid. So this combined with the beautiful pearls is just way too badass! Favorite video so far! Would love to see this full scale!
Also, for about how long did these glow? 5 minutes? More?

Amazing end results... who would have predicted that. Have you ever tried EL (electro-luminescent) as a base coat with glow in dark and color shift on top. It could be done in key areas rather than entire car. Hard to get constant application over large areas.

  • @kernelpickle

So, I had a feeling it would work just fine, because pearlescent pigments don’t actually “mix” they’re basically in suspension in the clear or base color. Traditional pearl and metal flake finishes use the same shiny or metallic particulates that are “mixed with” (suspended in) a candy/transparent base color.
I figured that as long as the glow ing pigment couldn’t mix with the pearls, then it would show through-either because it would mix with the clear, or because it would just sit right next to the pearls, like mixing a bowl of skittles with m&ms, you’ll see the discrete colors alongside them if you look really closely, but as long as that wasn’t enough to make the colored pearls look sparse, like you didn’t use enough pigment, it should work.
I can’t really tell by viewing the footage which scenario played out, but that was a cool effect and shame on the manufacturer for not already knowing that. How is it even possible that they could have such uncurious people in the R&D department, or management so idiotic that they weren’t just selling it like that from the day it was released?

  • @petercoutu4726
    @petercoutu4726 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think that you will find that the glow in the dark pigment actually dissolves into the clear coat while the pigments are a suspension

what brand of glow pigment were you using? the particle size had to be small for the sprayer? how different was the weight to volume ratio between the mica and the glow pigment?

I’ve done glow in the dark pigment in the clear over a metallic paint job that turned out really sweet. Just have to be careful about milking out the clear with too much glow.
But the effect was amazing, and the color was not disrupted. Took some trial and error to get it right tho

I was surprised it worked. I think a white base coat under the glow paint would work best as it would reflect the glow back out (we do this with Luminlay guitar fretboard inlays and paint the inside of the hole it goes into with white), though I’m not sure how the other colors/hypershift would work with a white base coat.

So, I've been given a Kymco scooter and have been trying to make this thing cool as a challenge. I have a $100ish budget for paint. I think I'm going to replicate your experiment on the color changing paint. I think the color shift with the glow in the dark as a hidden feature would be neat and there's plenty of curves on the body so it should pop quite nice. Can I use a gravity feed sprayer on this? Thanks for the idea bud.
