  • This is a special video, why?, because it is four makeovers in one. The Pony trailer and MG 1100 models were donated by some of my subscribers, as were the two plastic horses which came with the original model.
    This video has been heavily cut and edited. Originally there was over two hours of footage which showcased over 10 hours of work! It is a shame that so much information ended up on the 'cutting room floor', but if it hadn't happened then this video would be too long to watch!
    I do hope that when you watch these videos you appreciate the time taken to make it look easy. Thanks for watching, Marty.
    Footnote: After viewing the finished video I noticed that the trailer at the beginning had hairline cracks at the rear of the base. This explains how I came to break it, I originally thought that I had just been heavy handed.

    Awesome. My Dad had an Austin 1100. I still have my horsebox trailer in the loft and one of the horses. My horsebox was always hooked up to one of my Matchbox Landrover safaris. (Which I still have)
    Addendum. Just looked in the loft. It is STILL hooked up to one of the landrovers. Along with my DAF car transporter and a few Capris amongst others.

      My dad's first new car was a 1100 or a 1300, I forget which it was, he first knew problems were developing when me mum put her heel through the floor pan and going over a bump caused a great chunk of rusty paint to fall off one of the sills, further investigations by Bristol Street Motors who he bought it from saw great holes in the arches, under the wings, the metal under the windscreen pillar had rotted off and BSM had to condemn it, trading it for a nearly new Triumph Herald which had head gasket problems, he then got another new Herald 13/60 which ate clutches so in 1972 he gave up on British Leyland, bought a brand new metallic turquise 1725GL Hillman Hunter and it lasted him on the original clutch, original head gasket for nigh on 25 years, towing caravans to and from Scotland, he traded it in much to me mums disgust for a Cortina MKV estate and the manager who did the trade owned it well into the early 2000s.

    • @williamwoods8022
      @williamwoods8022 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dodgydruid Sounds like your dad bought other peoples unlooked after heaps of crap without checking them over first. Chunks of rust dont just fall off of new or looked after cars overnight and it takes a long time for rust to get like that so the car must have been a rusty heap underneath when he bought it and he never ckecked it in the first place before buying and the garage selling it must have known it was like that when selling it. Triumph Heralds never had head gasket problems so the only way that car could have had problems was the lacck of coolant and maintenance and they never had problems with clutches either so maybe trying to tow too heavy weights for the power etc of the car. I NEVER had any problems with the BL cars I owned but then again I inspected the cars I bought first and then I regularly maintained my cars myself so that they were exellent and reliable cars.

      @@dodgydruid the Hunter was a great car. My Dad owned one for a couple of years. However he was a dyed in the wool Cortina man at heart. The Hunter was sold and he got a Daytona yellow Cortina MK3 2.0GT estate. A brilliant car and the first car I ever drove.

    • @crazybrit-nasafan

      Sometimes cars are stored awaiting shipping to dealerships. Mostly outside. If a car has been stored in a damp environment for a couple of years then rot will set in. If the anti corrosion system in place is not very good (and no one can deny that BL had QC issues, especially in the later years) then the car is going to be the proverbial lemon.
      On saying that the only BL cars I had were minis. One of which was a dog of wolfhound proportions. The other wasn't too bad a car.

      @@dodgydruid Back in the late 70s I worked for a small repair shop in Calgary (Canada) repairing the British lot. We used to kid around a lot and we kept poking fun at the electrical troubles older BLMC products had in store for us:
      "Why do the Brits drink warm beer?" - "They have Lucas fridges". or
      "Lucas - the greatest name in darkness".
      Be that as it may with older British cars - they had character and I do miss my old 1100.

    Any actual 1100s still out there will have been lovingly restored. Mine sadly disintegrated, anti-corrosion technology being decades away still. Nice to see the Matchbox versions still being collected and brought back to vibrant life, though. The 1100 was lovely to drive and a best seller for years. ADO16 (from Austin Drawing Office) came in Morris, MG, Riley, Wolseley and Vanden Plas variants, too. Late-model "1300" versions had twin SU carbs - and some real poke!

You say 2hrs of footage, 10 hrs of work edited to 25 minutes of video. I can video, I can restore or customize cars. I have no idea how to edit...what equipment is required, how to download or upload. So when you say 10 hrs of work, is that on the car or on editing the video? Either way, I rejoice in the results. God bless you richly for delighting all of us!

    Strictly speaking, Tamiya acrylic is not water-based, it uses an alcohol solvent. Vallejo is water-based, you can tell the difference if you smell the two paints. But you can get away with thinning Tamiya acrylics with water and mixing with water-based acrylics but purest would say that you shouldn’t, that you should stick to the proper thinners. In fact many tamiya acrylic uses swear by the Tamiya lacquer thinner (which is similar, if not identical to cellulose thinners) when spraying Tamiya acrylics.

    Matchbox/Mattel re-released the pony trailer a few years ago. Several things were wrong with it. (1): The door/ramp was sealed shut; (2): Although there were two variations, with different objects moulded on the floor of the trailer, (and here's the killer) neither featured models of ponies, either in the box, which now had stuff all over the floor, or as separate figures to stand next to the trailer. A rather pointless exercise, to my way of thinking. Did I buy either? Have a guess. Your restoration of car and trailer is superb, as always. They look better than new. Nice one.

    I really wanted footage from the moment you busted that piece on the float. A few choice expletives no doubt. On a serious note, a respirator mask would be advisable any time your using Polystrippa indoors... and eye protection is a must also as it can fling about from the paintbrush.

    Marty nice upload the BMC British motor corporation 1100 back in 1970s these vehicles had a very comfortable ride as the early ones had hydroelastic suspension fitted, down fall was they leeked suspension fluid over time and you would see 1100 and 1300 models driving with one side dropped. The early morris and Austin mini models had this type of suspension fitted as did the early maxi but BMC dropped it for conventional shock and spring type that in my opinion made the ride a lot harder, nice vehicles but by ek they didnt half rust after a few years in the uk weather. (Regards from a uk pom) 😊

    • @MartysMatchboxMakeovers
      @MartysMatchboxMakeovers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had an Austin Maxi in the 80's they had that suspension and on a trip to Basingstoke one year it failed and I drove halfway there with the car tilted over to one side. Had to get the AA to tow me home back to Norwich to the nearest garage that could fix it up!

    • @radionutio81ij79
      @radionutio81ij79 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MartysMatchboxMakeovers yes marty they did suffer with suspension faults back in the day, they made the Austin morris 1100 1300 the 1500gt with a 1498cc engine and twin carburettors. The top of the range was the vander Plas model I remember BMC stopped production back in 1971. 😊

    @martysmmatchboxmakeovers Another perfect restoration. Just a trick I use for shallow rivets. There are tools out there that are specifically for cutting screws. I usually shorten all my screws just a bit just to be safe. Just a suggestion hope it helps. I know I prefer screws to glue.

    Thanks Marty! I use to own such a MG marketed in SA at the time as a Austin 1100. Had many problems with the fiber CV joints and sold the car... same as the Mini Minor at the time! Not knowing I sold a collectors car for nothing! I suppose there aint medication for stupidy! Maybe just swap the horse trailer with another model... There aint no way the 1100 can tow anything but the little bike trailer. Restore one of those for the MG. Awesome video! Thanks!

    • @MartysMatchboxMakeovers
      @MartysMatchboxMakeovers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are not alone with your comment about how weak this car was! - I didn't even think about it, I just thought that the two vehicles looked good together! - Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @fiatunonewsletter6782
      @fiatunonewsletter6782 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MartysMatchboxMakeovers Marty, I towed a bike trailer behind my 1100 Fiat Uno. The MG can do and as the trailer wheel size is out of proportion to the bike wheels... That argument does not count anymore as some Austins came with 12" wheels low profile correcting the scale. The bike trailer behind a pick-up wouldn't work, but in the case of this model, it will be perfect.
