MATCHBOX Restoration Y7 1918 4 Ton Leyland Van 1957

  • The real version of this delivery van was used in 1918 to deliver 'Jacobs' biscuits products around the UK. Built between 1957 and 1960 this little Matchbox Lesney Yesteryear model would've been a favourite 'Stocking filler' for any child especially if it was accompanied with a small packet of Jacobs biscuits.
The restoration of this model took me many days due to a multitude of unforseen problems popping up, not least, the fact that when I was close to the finish, it had to be stripped back to the metal and repainted as the decals crinkled up into an absolute mess! - I had to put the video on hold to await the arrival of replacement decals which ended up being of poor quality.

When your theme music starts up, it's like a form of therapy. Instantly, nothing else matters in the world and I know I can relax for 15 or 20 minutes (or 30).

You can have a fire there down under! My AC is running around the clock in PA/USA. You won't make that mistake of setting thick paint on something in front of the stove again. I was amazed that painting the top with that masking tape screen worked as well as it did - until it got ruined. Wheels/axles came out great - nicely done. You have a lot of patience.

Hi from Canada Marty. Have enjoyed your channel for several years and restored a few of my own. I do a lot of scale modelling as well, usually 1/12 F1 cars. A couple of years ago I purchased a food dehydrator that I use as a paint curing oven. 3 or 4 hours at 45c will harden paint to the point where it’s rock hard and totally safe to handle. No more worries about leaving fingerprints in soft paint!

Excellent job, Marty! Masking can be a major PITA! As a model railroader, we're told to work from light to dark, and to overspray the masking with either the masked color or a clear coat to seal the edge with paint to prevent seepage. Therefore, it would be primer, roof color, dry, mask roof, seal masking with clear or roof white, dry, spray body color, remove masking, dry, reassemble.
The axle reassembly was very innovative, but I'm not sure about the finished look. It was a lot of work for little in the way of added detail or character.

First. Tape the vehicle off, from the roof as apposed to what you did - if your going that way. Use low tack tape.
Second. All paints take weeks and months to fully cure, but are generally OK from that kind of problem from softness after 2 or 3 days. As you said yourself, you overloaded. So it would take longer.
I have to add, it looks super. Thanks MMM

It's a real pleasure to watch you give new life to these lovely, old diecast vehicles Marty. Was it just me or did those dodgy decals give the model a surreal 3D effect? If you find yourself in the position where you need to remove decals in the future, you might be able to remove them intact with lighter fluid (or leaving the model to soak in water) to dissolve the glue. Toy Poloi did a couple of videos on his channel about removing "stickers" from vintage toys using this method.
I particularly enjoyed that funky 80s tune while you were repainting the roof. It conjured up visions of a young Aircraftman Marty partying with his mates. 🙂
Anyway, another job well done, seasoned with the requisite amount of drama. Luv ya work! 👍👍

Nice restoration Marty. I wonder if the corrosion was spilt breakfast cereal. That stuff sets like concrete in the bowl, if not rinsed out straightaway. Thankfully, it is not the dreaded Zinc Pest. Matchbox castings are not known for it. Their quality control at the melted metal stage must have been top notch. Jacobs Cream crackers: rhyming slang for knackers?

Hi Marty! That is one of the models that I sent you. I must have missed the video when you first uploaded it. Sorry it was so much of a challenge, but you did a fantastic job. What appears to be corrosion is actually some sort of glue that was used to attach several of the models that I sent you to a display that was in the store where I purchased them. If you decide to restore any more of the models that I sent you, you will find the same glue on them. Maybe you can remove it with some sort of solvent. I love watching your videos!

H Marty. I suspect the corrosion could be due to a battery leaking on to it. The battery could have been in another toy that was dumped in to the same box or whatever.
