    Green flame comes from copper in the wool. Copper atoms get excited and when they return to ground state, they emmit the green light

      Man ya beat me to it. Yep coppers your culprit! Part of the alloy. 37% Zinc, 63% copper ish depending on what type of brass. Bronze is typically 88% copper 12% zinc

    In only three weeks I've gone from not knowing anything about the existence of Matchbox model restorations to wondering where this week's MMM video is. That alone speaks volumes to what you're doing and the quality of your productions, Marty. Thanks for all you do!

    With as much as you know about Matchbox models and how to restore them, have you ever thought of opening up a fix-it shop? I know it's a lot of work, but you seem to know more than anyone about restoring models. I am very deeply impressed with your work.

    That looks sweet, Marty ! I actually like the fact you didn't paint the bike motor. It makes it look "Matchbox original". You're a true artist ! May the good Lord bless you today !

    I have one of these, bought for me by my father when I was a child. He used to buy me a different model every week at a small town he passed through on his way back from a part of his job which required him to travel out of the city where we lived. As I was a little girl & didn't take these outside to bash around & leave in the rain, but just displayed them on shelves in my bedroom, all my tiny cars are in mint condition. However, my mother gave this wee motorcycle to my baby sister to chew on, & she swallowed the kickstand. Fortunately, she didn't aspirate it into one of her lungs! I would give anything to be able to get a replacement after all these years (this happened in 1969). I would be willing to pay for one of the little black ones, as well as for postage, as I live in Canada. Your work is beyond amazing! Love your channel! 🛵

    Green flame would be from the copper in the brass.

    • @RichardRenes
      @RichardRenes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, some metals will color flames. Copper (green) Barium (even brighter green), sodium (yellowish orange), Strontium (red), Bismuth (blue) and Magnesium or aluminium (bright white sparks) and Potassium (violet). These same metals are also used for coloring fireworks.

    • @zulumax1
      @zulumax1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bronze? Copper + Tin. Brass is softer Copper + Zinc. Both should produce green flame. Brass is more resistant to corrosion which is why it is used as bright work on sea going ships.

  • @adamcboyd
    @adamcboyd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just to put the caustic soda debate to bed: you need a tempered glass dish or bowl. Regular glass can shatter from the sudden head change, any plastic will just meld and cause a hazard and using metal will cause reactions you don't want. So don't fear the soda. Just get the damn right bowl! :) Thanks again Marty for all your hard work. I always make time to sit and watch your videos. You're the kind of guy that one can just tell you have a hell of a lot of heart. A hell of a lot.

    Oh, and by the way, your dental tools should have some small flats to them for adding and smoothing model filler. After all, dentists do the same when they are shaping your fillings. Well maybe not yours ... but you get the gist of it. Easier than using a toothpick.

  • @kjamison5951
    @kjamison5951 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great result, Marty!
    I am also restoring this model and I removed the wheels prior to painting. They are not as fragile as you might believe. The forks are robust, front and back. I had to repair one of the wheels where the spikes had detached from the rim. Even the tyres came up a treat.
    Getting the axles back in again is tricky. I used other longer axles to get the mushroom heads peened again.
    It’s important for other folks inspired by your work to understand that even models that appear completely beyond help can still supply much needed spare parts.
    Thanks Marty!

      I guess he wanted to keep it as close to original as possible. In the before restoration pictures, you can see the whole bike was painted. I thought it'd be neat if he left the engine in bare metal but I can understand why he didn't.

    Great video Marty.
    I see in the comments people saying you should've painted the details on the bike.
    I think it would've looked cool with some of the details popped out with paint,
    but the way you did it was a true restore, how it came out of box.

    Brilliant choice for a Resto. What would we do without 3D printers, eh? 😁 If you ever do another of that bike, how about painting to represent how a track bike of the day would have looked? There'd be a lot of bare metal and few parts coloured. Just an idea.......

    That brush is known as a "rigger", as it's used in art for painting things like fine rigging on ships. Great restoration Marty

      I'm not a motorcycle guy but watch a lot of restoration shows.... It does look odd seeing a painted engine and tailpipe. They live for that shiny chrome work.

      Matchbox did another later Honda bike with a separate chrome-plastic engine. It was done as a racer and as a police bike.

    Is KEVIN still underway in that russian aircraft?

    Great work Marty! That was always an odd toy to play with but such a cool model. It begs for some detailing, black seat and grips, gold badge, metallic engine and exhausts, silver filler cap and so on.
    Worth revisiting. Cool!
    There might be a way to cut the forks and separate off the front wheel and mud guard off and do an equivalent cut to separate the rear wheel, chain guard struts etc from the rest of the frame. Then, do the clean-up, painting, detailing then super-glue the parts in again. The Matchbox people must have struggled with it. It must have been the only motorbike they produced...

      Actually you could polish and clearcoat metallic parts. Then, mask, prime and spray/paint the tank and number plate and painted details, seat and grips. It had such amazing detail it seemed a shame to make it green all over.

    Enjoy all your videos Marty, I love that your Family joins inn and helps out in creating these videos also with you Sir. Fantastic as always! One of the days you need to use the 3D printer to fashion a mold to cast you own replacement part in metal! I'm sure you can do it! But until then, you really are a master of this. Thank you for sharing.
