I bet that the food dispensers on Moonbase operated in the same way as the ones seen on Star Trek! Great Video, and a BRILLIANT link to the Bases seen in both UFO and Space:1999!
This was most interesting - nostalgic, even. Thank you!
Shame UFO never went to a second series, there could have been episodes about Moonbase in more detail.
Even after all these years Moonbase looks as though it could be in commission today.
The series has not aged at all
Actually, Space 1999 was series two.
@@judebrad Agreed, but for a re-write by American broadcasters we had not seen the end of the UFO war. At least we saw the civilian operations in Space: 1999.
“Lots of dishes were available in the leisure sphere”. Is there really how they should be referring to Lt. Ellis? What a dish! ☺️
Seems Gerry didn’t own any of his creations. He made my childhood!
I'm here already and it's January 21. This is better than standing in line for Star Wars in 1977 because I'm on lockdown and I have a fridge and a toilet in the room with me.
Timeless. Outstanding. Thank you.
Wonderful - I remember getting a Shado Interceptor, with firing missile for Christmas and later a Shado Land vehicle :)
Same here.
I had a Shado Interceptor, a Shado Land Vehicle and an SPV1 for combined operations between Spectum and Shado. Thunderbirds helped with recovery operations.
I always thought the vibration from the Lunar module landing and taking off must be hell in the reception sphere !
I remember watching this series as a kid, which fuelled my imagination of the possibilities of living, working, and the exploration of space, something I think has somewhat dimmed in younger generations. It is interesting how I stumbled upon these "tech talks" with General (promoted finally) Straker while at the same time finding ALL of the original episodes available for streaming on ROKU. As I watch these as an older adult I admit I do chuckle at some of the screenplay, but also marvel at some of the enormously creative -ahead of their time, ideas found in the modeling and build concepts,: especially the Interceptors (my favorite). I now want to experience "Timelash" and travel back to the moonbase and perhaps spend some time with Lt. Ellis in the leisure pod...hahaha. Funny how we don't notice those kinds of things as young kids.
A big thumbs up for the Moonbase Command Crew. They made quite an impression back in the day.
Would make sense that the SHADO Moonbase would continue to be used, in a different capacity, when Moonbase Alpha was built. Shame there wasn't an episode of Space 1999 that just happened to use stock shots of it to strengthen that connection.
It never would have happened in those days, other than perhaps a brief shot of something intended as an inside joke. Continuity within series tended to be pretty weak, let alone between different series from the same producers.
Brilliant video! Very well produced. Thank you!!
A poster of Commander Straker had pride of place above my bed as a 7 year old. Gerry Anderson's series all added to the sense I had as a boy that we could rescue those in need, defeat those with evil intent, & fly to the moon if we liked. If the futures he envisaged had come to pass, the world would undoubtedly be a better place.
Fantastic and nostalgic thank you
Great tie-in to Space 1999. When I first saw this series last year, I knew there had to be a relation between UFO and Space 1999.
Excellent, as always, and kudos for naming the Moonmobile and Lunar Tank weapons systems after Matt Zimmerman and Ed Bishop. Nice one.
Love to see the job advertisements for working there: Applicants must be proficient in astrophysics, astro navigation and be willing to wear silver. The ability to look comfortable in a purple wig is essential.
Remember the whole S.H.A.D.O. organization was disguised as a television production company. The reason for the unusual uniforms was for the cover. Should their transmissions from space be intercepted they could be easily dismissed as being part of a broadcast.
@@joelellis7035 I always wondered about the purple wigs. Now I know. Thanks.
@@joelellis7035 The other story I recall (not sure of source) was that the moonbase had very dry air and lots of electronics, so the silver costumes and wigs were both metallic to wick away static electricity and avoid shocking people or equipment.
It's amazing that we had artificial gravity technology and the ability to observe objects traveling 12 times the speed of light back in 1980, as well as the means to send a probe across interstellar distances and beam back photos faster than the speed of light as well. What we could have done to improve human civilisation with such technology.....
U. F. O... far superior to Space 1999....rather had a 2nd series although 1999 had its moments.. Liked Ed Bishop and Co... 😊
This current series has bin interesting and very well written. I can’t wait to see who narrates series three of tech talk . I’m hoping it’s one of the Terrahawks maybe hiro or it funny if joe from joe 90 did the third series .
Torchy the Battery Boy
Bin?
Fascinating.hoping we get information on Cloudbase. In paticular were are all the ships kept?
I'll send a priority communique to Colonel White shortly. Spectrum's security is notoriously tight, but I'll see what we can do.
It is not clear as to where the interceptor hangers were. One could argue that it is inside the vehicle hanger, but the interceptor lifts are circular, while the vehicle lifts appeared to be square.
They're in three separate craters, a short distance from the surface installation :)
@@ACtheLegend I wondered where the duty pilots were stationed since it's not mentioned here. Guess they must be closer to the craters?
@@epiendless1128 living quarters in main module and leisure sphere lower level :)
@@ACtheLegend That short distance must have been one hell of a ride down to the interceptors!
@@nriqueog it'd be a fairly shallow angle as the bays aren't too far underground :)
Thank you for doing this. That show i ENJOYED THIS SHOW ALOT.
Moonbase Alpha became functional some years after the Moonbase operated by Shado became not so vital. And ended up as a science hub for that moonbase. Wonder if there a chance that Alpha might be featured in this?
The core to Moon Base Alpha....
They share similarities, but different locations :)
@@ACtheLegend Both Anderson productions.
@@joelellis7035 yes, that's one obvious one :)
@@ACtheLegend Sorry for not responding earlier but when i mentioned the core i did not mean it was the actual core but the the basis for what will come after it.
*_Beste Serie Ever, ich glaub ich habe jede Folge schon 1000 mal gesehen_*
I feel like that artificial gravity could be adapted and weaponised. Say, you miniaturised it and put it in a small, spherical robot, then it could artificially increase its mass.
That idea sounds impractical, or at best would take 40 years to implement... ;)
i REALLY hope some one is going to explain the purple wigs.
Same
Apparently, the purple wigs provided extra cosmic background radiation (long-term) protection to the wearers. Same as those spacesuits they wore.
@@datathunderstorm oki, thank you for sharing that. But silliness aside then why didn't the men stationed on the Moon also wear purple wigs?
Just part of the female uniform :)
In the UFO paperbacks, they were "anti-static" wigs to prevent the women's long hair from creating static that would disrupt the sensitive electronics.
Any chance of a video to the Phoenix and Dove from Doppleganger?
When heard the word bishop did any one else think how cool a cross over between x-men and new captain scarlet would be or Terrahawks and tmnt . Or was it just me ???
I always wondered why the Moon is always in the right position to intercept. Did aliens attack only once a lunar month?
It isn't, sometimes the Interceptors don't launch.
What? Space 1999 was in the same universe as UFO???? 😮 (Picking my jaw from the floor).
Same moon, different area. Moonbase Alpha was located in a smaller crater named Plato which is why the Alphans were concerned in the episode "Last Sunset"....if enough rain had occurred, Alpha would've been at the bottom of a big lake.
Same area as the Sea of Tranquility on the moon. If it was retained by Alpha, as for the purpose as described. The only additional feature to it. Would be a launch/landing pad for the Eagle Transporters. To Jamie Anderson. Why not see if you can build a model of that moonbase with modified central module and the launch/landing pad alongside it ? My guess is that the Aliens that attacked Earth ceased doing so in 1990. So Shado petered out. A year later. Many of the advances were put into Alpha's design and construction. There was a civilian moonbase 50 miles from the Shado Moonbase. Perhaps that was Alpha under initial construction!
As. iChat as I love trek, Anderson was the true visionary
I wonder - would we get data on Moonbase Alpha? It would be great to hear that base's early years through to the breakaway. We got a clue to Alpha's early years.
There’s a whole book on it! shop.gerryanderson.com/products/moonbase-alpha-technical-operations-manual-standard-and-special-edition
Awesome video, the only let down was that we never got to see the finish…
What's the name of the ending music? It's sooo good!
It's an incidental version of the main intro theme :)
Awesome video as always but I have a question. Why was Shaddo not simply reformed in response to the threat posed by Zelda and her cronies. Instead of the Terrahawks. Being created. True Terrahawks were technically more advanced but surely from a logistic point of view it would have been easier to reform Shado rather than assemble and equip an entirely new team.
The Shado tech had long-since been decommissioned and dismantled (with the exception of Moonbase, which was taken over by the Alpha scientists), the original staff reassigned and 40 years older by the time Zelda arrived :)
@@ACtheLegend ok 👌 I didn’t realise there was a 40 year gap between
@@MegaPIC1 No problem! UFO was set in 1980, Terrahawks first episode is set in 2020, so let's be generous and say the Alien war lasted 8 years until 1988. That'd make it 32 years instead of 40 :)
The Terrahawks were set in 2020, but in 1999, the moon blasted out of Earth's orbit, presumably taking the SHADO real estate along with Moonbase Alpha.
@@frankberry6220 Ah, but there's more to it than that, as will be revealed in episode 2.8 ;)
Awkward question time:
I'm just wondering what the source is for SHADO Moonbase being located in the Sea of Tranquility? I only ask because in the episode 'Survival', Paul Foster's map shows it is located in the Mare Imbrium, not the Sea of Tranquility. The crater Plato, where Moonbase Alpha is situated, is ALSO in the Mare Imbrium, so this would tie in to the original concepts for UFO 2 and the idea that SHADO Moonbase was expanded on and became 'Moon City'/Alpha.
Do you really think SHADO would make it’s true Moonbase location public? 😜🤔
@@GerryAndersonTV That answer is a masterclass in dealing with fans like me! :D
I'd STILL like to know where the Interceptor pads are in relation to the base
Just over a ridge near the base :)
I don't see it.....LOL
@@jrdube its not visible on screen but that's where it is.
Very diplomatic, referencing Space:1999 but not going too in-depth about the details. It'd take the ultimate of plot contrivances to try and include Space:1999 as part of any extended Anderson canon, seeing as the moon is very much still orbiting the Earth in several other Anderson series set further into the future.
Wait for episode 2.8... ;)
WHAT ABOUT THE PURPLE WIGS?
They're just part of the standard female uniform.
What ... wigs? :-D
When I was a teenager that Gabrielle Drake used to take me to the moon and back regularly!!!!!!
The Moon Shuttle system always seemed needlessly complicated to me. Typical Anderson, though. 😀
I remember the series from when I was young(er)... was an explanation for the purple wigs EVER offered?
Just part of the uniform.
Sure! It was a directive from Sylvia Anderson!
@@ACtheLegend doesn't make much sense... but then, most things about the SHADO "Panic at the Disco" uniform style didn't make much sense anyway.
I'm trying to wrack my brains and think..did we ever get to see one of the aliens?
All the time, silver helmets, green liquid filled visors and red suits, check out video 2.1 in this series :)
Yeah,I think about this show, myself!I wish they could;”redo the show’,and add some new actor’s for the character’s of;Ed Straker,Paul Foster, and Liutenant Gay Ellis! This would be great,if they just got some funding going for it?Then,we could watch the show in:a new light,a new atmosphere!Yes!It would be nice, here!
The reactor sphere is right next to the landing sphere and the command sphere, someone made a design error
The reactor itself is subterrainean, and there are plenty of safety bulkheads in the event of an accident :)
In an emergency, the moon can be ejected.
@@JagoHazzard yeah, like that would EVER happen......LOL
@@JagoHazzard Wish I could upvote that more than once. :-)
"What happens if I press this button?"
1980😵
11 Alien infiltrators detected.
The reactor was critical? Best get the hell away from it then.. ;-)
nah, it's only a problem when it's super-critical
Cosmos 1999 et the thunderbirds reunis ,
Miniskirts in a military organization? Come on, now!
Star Trek did it first...
So did exposure to Lunar dust cause only the women to get purple 💜 hair?
But why the purple wigs?
Part of the female uniform.
General Straker voice seems to have changed dramatically. He now sounds exactly like Jon Culshaw putting on a very bad American accent
Must be easy to attack other videos when your own channel's emptier than a hermit's address book...
@@ACtheLegend Except this isn't an amateur video but a professional production using a professional "Impersonator".
@@Ettrick8 well, thanks for calling it professional. One does one's best. But since we've no on screen reference for what an older Straker sounds like, and Jon based the inflections and patterns on Ed's voice from a Scarlet documentary, I think it's spot on.
@@ACtheLegend The content of the video is excellent so well done to those involved. If your happy with Mr Culshaw then that's all that matters.
I have listened/watched Ed Bishop on a number of productions and I'm quite familiar with his voice.
Elon Musk will make the lunar base a reality. Too bad the purple-hair girls, turned out to be feminists.
Thats not a flattering picture of Ed Bishop.
Afraid the World Security Service don't give us a choice when they supply reference photos, we just have to use what they approve for us.
Let's not disrespect the General Stu :-)
Okay, but WHY did all the female personnel have purple wigs and turn up to duty in heavy make-up?
Wigs are part of the female uniform. It's that simple :)
