It's such a shame that people complain about showing the controls. I think there are people out there that are just looking for reasons to worry and be paranoid and "help" us all to be more safe. All that information is freely available anyway. I know for many mainline locos and units there are actual tutorial videos of exactly how to drive the train and ANYBODY with an interest (for good or bad reasons) could find out quickly how to do it in just a few minutes. The thing is, anybody who has watched more than 10 minutes of one of your videos would already know it would be impossible to take a train and do any harm other than having their own SPAD/stop-cock at the first red signal! People are so paranoid about security these days: it's just how society is now I guess and I TOTALLY respect your decision to try to keep everybody happy, Dale. Keep up the good work and thanks again!

So true, I am reading a book at the moment which is more or less telling me how to drive a Class 50. My Dad is Ex British rail and I have been in many cabs. I could jump in a class 455 and make it move, but like you said, first RED signal and I am out of business.
we also have train simulators where almost every button works as they would on a real train, so if you wanted to learn to drive there are much easier ways than watching someone on youtube

With respect to the video showing you driving the train, I actually prefer videos with the camera pointed out front. I like seeing the platforms, the stations, and London. So, I don't mind that they'll be no more videos of you driving the train. Great videos as always. I really enjoy your videos.
Many thanks for the bonus video. I have always liked to see the points and crossings. In the 1940's and 50's the family frequently travelled on the Northern Line between Clapham South and Golders Green to visit grand parents .My brothers and I eagerly watched for all the various points. Now living in Canada and just about house bound these train trips bring back many happy memories. Thanks, Dale for all your efforts.

I have a similar length of commute to you from Wiltshire to West London. I only do it twice a week as stay over but now your long videos are my go to travelling audio. I was driving through the back roads of Heston the other day and spotted an old guy on a bench. On your video you sounded the whistle. I was so absorbed in your voice I nearly wound down window to say sorry as if my car made the noise 😂

Dale, if you're not already there, then I strongly recommend long johns for when the weather gets colder - It took me several years to work it out but it really helps my bad knee no end. Joints don't like getting cold.

Dale, you made me laugh (a bit too much) when you mentioned the possibility that someone may have been feeling whimsical when determining the signal positions! You’re right in what you say about the positions being determined (in respect of which side of the track they are placed - i.e. LHS or RHS) according to sighting requirements and gauge clearance. Other factors that can influence the decision-making process will include cable routes, maintainability (along with safe access) and structural considerations… plus other factors that may be more site-specific. All of that generally occurs once the signalling design engineer has determined the signal’s position along the line, such that it meets with its required purpose - but that’s fairly complicated, so I won’t ramble on any further other than to thank you for another interesting and informative video!
Regarding the bendiness at Holborn and South Kensington, I think this is an artefact of the Piccadilly line being cobbled together from multiple independent schemes that weren't originally designed to connect until they all got taken over by Underground Electric Railways of London (UERL). The Great Northern and Strand railway was proposed to run from Wood Green to Strand (later renamed Aldwych), the Brompton & Piccadilly Circus Railway was to run from Cranbourn Street (east of Piccadilly Circus, although the Cranbourn Street to Piccadilly Circus bit was rejected by parliament, so it was revised to run to Cambridge Circus) to South Kensington, and the District Railway were planning a deep level line from Mansion House.to Gloucester Road (and then surface and join the existing line at Earl's Court. All three struggled with finance though and were ultimately bought by UERL and combined, with the linking sections being twisty to join the routes together. This is also why the branch to Aldwych existed. Jago Hazzard has done a good video on this if you haven't seen it (I can actually recommend his entire channel).

Thank for video as usual from a regular " youselot ". Totally agree with not showing controls, I think the main concern is normal folk knowing how to operate a train and perhaps them having ill intent. As a bus man there are a couple of things a bus driver needs to do to start the bus or select gear, which a non bus driver would not know, hence it would be harder from them to take a bus for a joyride.

I don’t really have much to do with drivers of the other lines. We only see them in passing. Should we see drivers from other lines and depots then clearly we have to make sure they know that we work the hardest 🤣

Love the videos. I live in NYC. Here, many tunnels are multi-level in some sections of the system. Are there any multi-level tunnels in your system? Also, why are there no lights in your tunnels? Here, all the subway tunnels are lighted.
We have tunnels that go over or under other tunnels but not multilevel. I don’t know the exact reason for the lights. From a my point of view is when the tunnel lights are on it can make seeing the signals harder and can give me a headache

Of passengers who cannot decide whether to board or not - I remember the Sprague stock on the Paris Metro - you soon learned not to leave fingers or anything else in the way when those sliding doors slammed shut...
Another excellent video. With regard to your flights, I have heard (but haven't checked) that if you fly from a Highland airport (such as Inverness), you don't have to pay APD. Therefore, especially on your 1st class trips, it may be worth checking the flights from Inverness to London and then on to wherever (e.g. Inverness to JFK on BA rather than just from London to JFK) to see if it does save you money by not paying the APD. You also gain extra tier points from the additional flight!
It’s true you can save money booking from Inverness. It’s not always the case though. However if some on is not in a rush and wants to save money it’s worth looking at the price. But then you need to factor in the price of getting up there plus a hotel
Do you ever send a report on a train to the technicians, eg the brakes are not working as expected, there are flat spots on the wheels, the headlight is out etc
We have a defect book on the train to write any thing in. Generally we will call control and try to arrange for a technician to meet the train to confirm or fix the defect
Thanks for another great video Dale. Always a pleasure to pretend I am a train driver through your videos! Could I pass the driver training? Probably not! I had an idea which might be useful. On this and other videos, it seems situational awareness is important as part of your duties. You keep yourself aware of the train behind you, saying things like "There's a Heathrow train 3 minutes behind". I think it would be useful to know what you are following also. Could the software which drives the board be modified to show the train in front? You don't need loads of info. For example, they could put -3 in the top right corner and you would know you are 3 minutes behind another train.
We can usually guess where the train in front is with what red signals we see. There is no where in our train to display any info. For the trains behind I look at the passenger boards on the platform
@@dalecharmantravels8057 That's what I meant. They put something on the passenger info board above the platform but just a number indicating distance. But as you say, you can figure it out from the red signals. The opposite extreme is one of your videos where you did not have to make a single annoucement that you were waiting for a signal. Every station had green when you were ready to go. In fact if I recall, even the punters were behaving themselves as you made two announcements only - the lift is out at Green Park and all change just before Cockfosters.
I miss London :3 as I've said many times. It's why I'm here. Dale, I hope you're doing well, if and when you read this. I'm kind of struggling, but your videos always make me smile! By the way -- quick question, if I may. The one that confuses me is the so-called "harbor lights". I thought that was the triangular set of three lights, below the red/green signals sometimes, with a white backing and usually a visor over, but IIRC Dale said that _that_ was to indicate a bad power rail. So now I'm confused.
I am sorry to hear you struggling, we all do at some time in our life. My thoughts are with you and I’m sure every one else here agrees. So the harbour lights are 3 white lights showing the direction of the track. The triangle with 3 red lights ( not illuminated ) are rail gap indicators. So if the 3 lights were illuminated it would suggest the power is off in the next section. Assuming it’s not a faulty indicator

I've also never quite picked out the harbour lights, so, not having the eyes of a driver, I'm afraid that's still not enough for me to tell precisely what they look like or where they are... apologies if it's frustrating. I'm sure, for you, it's a case of "they're right flippin _there_ , chappie!" but I've not that kind of experience that lets me do that. Maybe you can describe them to the level that I did the rail gap indicators? That ought to be enough detail.

Please now forgive me for jumping in here to help with your query about the harbour lights - if you watch from 1:03:50 you'll see the Acton Town station starting signal on the left hand side by the wall (and the co-acting signal just beyond). A moment before the signal clears, you'll see the white "harbour lights" (junction indicator) illuminate above the red aspect (and a miniature junction indicator doing likewise by the co-acting signal beyond). I hope this helps to explain. Take care.

I think I see it now, the diagonal row of white lights, each with their own little visor or 'hood', above the twin green/red signal lamps by the wall, going in a diagonal line from lower-right to upper-left, and a similar, smaller indicator that's otherwise the same, on the signal lamps just past the edge of the platform, and just above platform-level there, that work in tandem with the signals on the wall. Is that them?
@laserhawk64 Yes, that's correct... those are indeed the harbour lights (or, more formally, "route lights" or "junction indicator"). In this location, they show that the route is set to diverge to the left (they wouldn't be illuminated if the main route for the signal had been set instead - in this instance that'd be the straight ahead route on the 'fast' line). Daft random question for you, Dale: What would happen if you were to (try to) drive off with the doors open (all of them - if you'd forgotten to press the door close button) AND if one of the doors were still partially opened because either someone had been caught in it OR there were an idiot or two messing about? Will the train move with the doors open / ajar? Or do bleepy things go off and/or automatic brakes come into play??
In my experience, if the doors were open, I wouldn't get 'door interlock', which basically meant that I couldn't get traction power and would be unable to move train. However, let's hear what the great man has to say😊
You are correct Mark. All you get is an alarm going off and nothing else will happen. We can over ride that to allow the train to move should we not be able to close the doors due to a fault.

Hi Dale. Looking at your reflection in a window I got an impression that you do not keep your hand on the throttle constantly while driving. Is it correct? I just thought that the throttle also acts as a deadman pedal on these older trains which should always be pressed while driving
1:15:12, *and 1:18:33 I was wondering about something related to this, recently. I haven't checked the Comments so someone else may have asked this, but I wanted to know if TfL ever implement timetables based on forecasted weather. If there was something like a storm to come, does TfL have a pre-set "rain timetable" that they give to drivers in advance? Thinking about it now, co-ordinating that sounds difficult to me, because it could coincide with existing rotas.
On the pic line I have never heard of such a thing. If some thing happens they are more likely to just run an emergency timetable. Which means we are just told to take a train ( let’s say100) and run it to say T5 and back.
The reason for the sharp bends, is down to cost at time of building. When building the line they had to compensate all of the owners of the land they passed under, unless it was owned by the councils, so that is why so many lines follow the roads so they didn't have to pay out so much, and that is why they are so sharp.
Just done a quick Google on the South Kensington Bends. This forum post suggest it's a relic of the 3 intended lines that were merged to form the Piccadilly. 'Nothing to do with a plague pit as far as I am aware: it is my understanding that these curves, like the Aldwych branch, are the result of the Piccadilly having been cobbled together from three originally quite separate projects - the Great Northern and Strand, (Finsbury Park to Aldwych), the Piccadilly and Brompton (Piccadilly Circus to Brompton Road) and the Deep Level District (Hammersmith - South Kensington - Mansion House). Yerkes bought them all out before construction began but was obliged to follow the routes already approved, extending the P&B at each end to join the GN&S and the DLD at new junctions at Holborn and South Kensington respectively.'

Nice thing to watch drivers POV with commentary, Thanks. But one question: what if someone (a driver) has to go to a toilet - urgent - in the midst of his x-hours drive? (honestly, even a 1,5h drive can be long to hold back) 🙃
There are toilets for drivers to use dotted around. How ever if needs be the driver can use the toilets at any station. We try not to do that as it causes a delay especially at big stations like Holborn. It’s a long walk
Forget Peter Pan Bus Lines, take Amtrak instead. The trip from New York Penn Station to Washington Union Station on the Regional takes about 4 hours each way. If you take the faster Acela train, it will take 2 hours each way. And here's the kicker, you can film your trip from NYC to DC while traveling about 110 mph (177 kph).
There is a possibility that wayleave agreements were not agreed with property owners. They may not have agreed to the offer price, so the train companies diverted to follow the carriageway.
Ĥi Dale, i don't blame you not showing the drivers controls. It's not worth you getting in trouble or risking your job. So were you the first tube driver to film themselves driving? I only ask because there are so many others doing it now. Anyway keep on filming because yours are more interesting than some of the others. Take care.
I think the Heathrow branch is about the only place they are still there ( on the pic line) not sure if they work or not. They are installing phone signals and WiFi in the tunnels
@@dalecharmantravels8057 Thank you. Definitely gone on the Northern. The London Transport Museum people were at Sth Kentish Town. No wires present on the tunnels walls. They distinctively were on insulators like a telephone line. They walked from Camden during Engineering hours. The telephone was for emergencies, not regular comms. Apparently touching both lines together would make the traction current go off. A useful function besides talking to the Line Controller.
Not sure if this has been mentioned before but I heard a rumour that when all the new pic trains are in service that they will stop at Turnham Green all day?
There are some signals that (face the opposite way) they are for shunt moves. So a train could run the wrong way to clear points or some thing. That would be as far as they could go
At the moment all the deep level lines use different stock ( except Waterloo and city who use district line stock). Some stocks do use other lines to be moved around. There may be some issues like on say the bends at south ken as the length of each carriage makes a difference.
Dale can you answer this question, on the outside sections I noticed that the power rails in some places have a gap (some short some long), I understand on cross overs and points but a some are on long strait sections, what is the purpose for this, and thanks for uploading these videos.
Some of it will be for different power sections. So one section can be switched off. I am also guessing it’s also that the power rails come in a standard length. Just guessing as I’m not an engineer

Dale, if you're not already there, then I strongly recommend long johns for when the weather gets colder - It took me several years to work it out but it really helps my bad knee no end. Joints don't like getting cold.

Dale, you made me laugh (a bit too much) when you mentioned the possibility that someone may have been feeling whimsical when determining the signal positions! You’re right in what you say about the positions being determined (in respect of which side of the track they are placed - i.e. LHS or RHS) according to sighting requirements and gauge clearance. Other factors that can influence the decision-making process will include cable routes, maintainability (along with safe access) and structural considerations… plus other factors that may be more site-specific. All of that generally occurs once the signalling design engineer has determined the signal’s position along the line, such that it meets with its required purpose - but that’s fairly complicated, so I won’t ramble on any further other than to thank you for another interesting and informative video!
I appreciate the info. As I have said in my videos before about the only thing I know about signals is red, Green, yellow and route indicators. 🤣

Regarding the bendiness at Holborn and South Kensington, I think this is an artefact of the Piccadilly line being cobbled together from multiple independent schemes that weren't originally designed to connect until they all got taken over by Underground Electric Railways of London (UERL).
The Great Northern and Strand railway was proposed to run from Wood Green to Strand (later renamed Aldwych), the Brompton & Piccadilly Circus Railway was to run from Cranbourn Street (east of Piccadilly Circus, although the Cranbourn Street to Piccadilly Circus bit was rejected by parliament, so it was revised to run to Cambridge Circus) to South Kensington, and the District Railway were planning a deep level line from Mansion House.to Gloucester Road (and then surface and join the existing line at Earl's Court. All three struggled with finance though and were ultimately bought by UERL and combined, with the linking sections being twisty to join the routes together. This is also why the branch to Aldwych existed. Jago Hazzard has done a good video on this if you haven't seen it (I can actually recommend his entire channel).

If I moved lines it would be to the northern line. The only reason is the commute to and from work would be about the same as I do now
Thank for video as usual from a regular " youselot ". Totally agree with not showing controls, I think the main concern is normal folk knowing how to operate a train and perhaps them having ill intent. As a bus man there are a couple of things a bus driver needs to do to start the bus or select gear, which a non bus driver would not know, hence it would be harder from them to take a bus for a joyride.
There's dozens of other videos already out there - that ship sailed long ago.

I don’t really have much to do with drivers of the other lines. We only see them in passing. Should we see drivers from other lines and depots then clearly we have to make sure they know that we work the hardest 🤣

Love the videos. I live in NYC. Here, many tunnels are multi-level in some sections of the system. Are there any multi-level tunnels in your system? Also, why are there no lights in your tunnels? Here, all the subway tunnels are lighted.
We have tunnels that go over or under other tunnels but not multilevel. I don’t know the exact reason for the lights. From a my point of view is when the tunnel lights are on it can make seeing the signals harder and can give me a headache

Another excellent video. With regard to your flights, I have heard (but haven't checked) that if you fly from a Highland airport (such as Inverness), you don't have to pay APD. Therefore, especially on your 1st class trips, it may be worth checking the flights from Inverness to London and then on to wherever (e.g. Inverness to JFK on BA rather than just from London to JFK) to see if it does save you money by not paying the APD. You also gain extra tier points from the additional flight!
It’s true you can save money booking from Inverness. It’s not always the case though. However if some on is not in a rush and wants to save money it’s worth looking at the price. But then you need to factor in the price of getting up there plus a hotel

Do you ever send a report on a train to the technicians, eg the brakes are not working as expected, there are flat spots on the wheels, the headlight is out etc
We have a defect book on the train to write any thing in. Generally we will call control and try to arrange for a technician to meet the train to confirm or fix the defect

If you mean the light on the box in the wall. It’s called a P crid ( I think) the light says it the power to the rails is on, off or there is a fault

I had an idea which might be useful. On this and other videos, it seems situational awareness is important as part of your duties. You keep yourself aware of the train behind you, saying things like "There's a Heathrow train 3 minutes behind". I think it would be useful to know what you are following also. Could the software which drives the board be modified to show the train in front? You don't need loads of info. For example, they could put -3 in the top right corner and you would know you are 3 minutes behind another train.
We can usually guess where the train in front is with what red signals we see. There is no where in our train to display any info. For the trains behind I look at the passenger boards on the platform
@@dalecharmantravels8057 That's what I meant. They put something on the passenger info board above the platform but just a number indicating distance. But as you say, you can figure it out from the red signals. The opposite extreme is one of your videos where you did not have to make a single annoucement that you were waiting for a signal. Every station had green when you were ready to go. In fact if I recall, even the punters were behaving themselves as you made two announcements only - the lift is out at Green Park and all change just before Cockfosters.
I miss London :3 as I've said many times. It's why I'm here. Probably won't watch the other stuff, but mad respect to Dale for trying to cover multiple interest groups like that... and, sure, I'll have a mint. By the way -- quick question, if I may. The one that confuses me is the so-called "harbor lights". I thought that was the triangular set of three lights, below the red/green signals sometimes, with a white backing and usually a visor over, but IIRC Dale said that _that_ was to indicate a bad power rail. So now I'm confused.
I am sorry to hear you struggling, we all do at some time in our life. My thoughts are with you and I’m sure every one else here agrees. So the harbour lights are 3 white lights showing the direction of the track. The triangle with 3 red lights ( not illuminated ) are rail gap indicators. So if the 3 lights were illuminated it would suggest the power is off in the next section. Assuming it’s not a faulty indicator

I've also never quite picked out the harbour lights, so, not having the eyes of a driver, I'm afraid that's still not enough for me to tell precisely what they look like or where they are... apologies if it's frustrating. I'm sure, for you, it's a case of "they're right flippin _there_ , chappie!" but I've not that kind of experience that lets me do that. Maybe you can describe them to the level that I did the rail gap indicators? That ought to be enough detail.

Please now forgive me for jumping in here to help with your query about the harbour lights - if you watch from 1:03:50 you'll see the Acton Town station starting signal on the left hand side by the wall (and the co-acting signal just beyond). A moment before the signal clears, you'll see the white "harbour lights" (junction indicator) illuminate above the red aspect (and a miniature junction indicator doing likewise by the co-acting signal beyond). I hope this helps to explain.

I think I see it now, the diagonal row of white lights, each with their own little visor or 'hood', above the twin green/red signal lamps by the wall, going in a diagonal line from lower-right to upper-left, and a similar, smaller indicator that's otherwise the same, on the signal lamps just past the edge of the platform, and just above platform-level there, that work in tandem with the signals on the wall. Is that them?
@laserhawk64 Yes, that's correct... those are indeed the harbour lights (or, more formally, "route lights" or "junction indicator"). In this location, they show that the route is set to diverge to the left (they wouldn't be illuminated if the main route for the signal had been set instead - in this instance that'd be the straight ahead route on the 'fast' line).

Daft random question for you, Dale: What would happen if you were to (try to) drive off with the doors open (all of them - if you'd forgotten to press the door close button) AND if one of the doors were still partially opened because either someone had been caught in it OR there were an idiot or two messing about? Will the train move with the doors open / ajar? Or do bleepy things go off and/or automatic brakes come into play??
In my experience, if the doors were open, I wouldn't get 'door interlock', which basically meant that I couldn't get traction power and would be unable to move train.
However, let's hear what the great man has to say😊
You are correct Mark. All you get is an alarm going off and nothing else will happen. We can over ride that to allow the train to move should we not be able to close the doors due to a fault.

Hi Dale. Looking at your reflection in a window I got an impression that you do not keep your hand on the throttle constantly while driving. Is it correct? I just thought that the throttle also acts as a deadman pedal on these older trains which should always be pressed while driving

I haven't checked the Comments so someone else may have asked this, but I wanted to know if TfL ever implement timetables based on forecasted weather. If there was something like a storm to come, does TfL have a pre-set "rain timetable" that they give to drivers in advance?
Thinking about it now, co-ordinating that sounds difficult to me, because it could coincide with existing rotas.
On the pic line I have never heard of such a thing. If some thing happens they are more likely to just run an emergency timetable. Which means we are just told to take a train ( let’s say100) and run it to say T5 and back.

The reason for the sharp bends, is down to cost at time of building. When building the line they had to compensate all of the owners of the land they passed under, unless it was owned by the councils, so that is why so many lines follow the roads so they didn't have to pay out so much, and that is why they are so sharp.

Just done a quick Google on the South Kensington Bends. This forum post suggest it's a relic of the 3 intended lines that were merged to form the Piccadilly.
'Nothing to do with a plague pit as far as I am aware: it is my understanding that these curves, like the Aldwych branch, are the result of the Piccadilly having been cobbled together from three originally quite separate projects - the Great Northern and Strand, (Finsbury Park to Aldwych), the Piccadilly and Brompton (Piccadilly Circus to Brompton Road) and the Deep Level District (Hammersmith - South Kensington - Mansion House). Yerkes bought them all out before construction began but was obliged to follow the routes already approved, extending the P&B at each end to join the GN&S and the DLD at new junctions at Holborn and South Kensington respectively.'

There are toilets for drivers to use dotted around. How ever if needs be the driver can use the toilets at any station. We try not to do that as it causes a delay especially at big stations like Holborn. It’s a long walk
Forget Peter Pan Bus Lines, take Amtrak instead. The trip from New York Penn Station to Washington Union Station on the Regional takes about 4 hours each way. If you take the faster Acela train, it will take 2 hours each way.
And here's the kicker, you can film your trip from NYC to DC while traveling about 110 mph (177 kph).
I have booked the regional train down to Washington and I already had booked the Acela back to NY
There is a possibility that wayleave agreements were not agreed with property owners. They may not have agreed to the offer price, so the train companies diverted to follow the carriageway.

Is the old tunnel telephone entirely extinct on the Piccadilly line. I am amazed how there can be radio inside the tunnels.
I think the Heathrow branch is about the only place they are still there ( on the pic line) not sure if they work or not. They are installing phone signals and WiFi in the tunnels
@@dalecharmantravels8057 Thank you. Definitely gone on the Northern. The London Transport Museum people were at Sth Kentish Town. No wires present on the tunnels walls. They distinctively were on insulators like a telephone line. They walked from Camden during Engineering hours.
The telephone was for emergencies, not regular comms. Apparently touching both lines together would make the traction current go off. A useful function besides talking to the Line Controller.
Not sure if this has been mentioned before but I heard a rumour that when all the new pic trains are in service that they will stop at Turnham Green all day?

Why are there sometimes signals on the eastbound facing trains heading westbound
There are some signals that (face the opposite way) they are for shunt moves. So a train could run the wrong way to clear points or some thing. That would be as far as they could go

Is that deep level tube stock the same as other tube stock Dale onnthe system???

At the moment all the deep level lines use different stock ( except Waterloo and city who use district line stock). Some stocks do use other lines to be moved around. There may be some issues like on say the bends at south ken as the length of each carriage makes a difference.

Dale can you answer this question, on the outside sections I noticed that the power rails in some places have a gap (some short some long), I understand on cross overs and points but a some are on long strait sections, what is the purpose for this, and thanks for uploading these videos.
Some of it will be for different power sections. So one section can be switched off. I am also guessing it’s also that the power rails come in a standard length. Just guessing as I’m not an engineer
