I lived in Amersham, and then Chesham for many years. I was a frequent user of the Met, and watched the progress of electrification. I travelled on the old Chesham shuttle, in steam days, and also in the Dreadnought stock, steam hauled to Ricky, when the tank loco was substituted by an electric loco for the remainder of the trip to Baker Street, and beyond. I very much liked the A60 stock which eventually took over the duties. I remember many a fast, bumpy ride on them, particularly through the pointwork at Neasden.

As a then toddler, I can just about recollect boarding one of the very first A60 Stock silver trains from my home town of Chesham to go up to London Christmas shopping.
I also appear to be one of the very few who can recall seeing the turntable in Chesham Goods Yard.

The A stock were the best stock to run on the sub-surface routes. S stock may be OK for Hammersmith & City, Circle and possibly District line services, but are totally unsuited to outer Metropolitan services, especially to Amersham and Chesham.
There was no good reason for not building new stock identical bodywise and internally to the A stock, with modern traction equipment, air conditioning, suspension etc

Lovely film I grew up at Kings Cross and used to virtually play on the network and do trainspotting at places like Royal Oak. I've ridden on most of those old trains. I had a cab ride in the vickers bobo from Liverpool Street to Baker Street. I've ridden on the district round window trains, the standard stock and the 1938. I've been all over the place from circa 1956 and explored so much of London and school holidays I'd be off somewhere and rarely had a ticket. Lovely days and London was so safe and a great place to grow up.

I lived in London during 1981-2 and used the Bakerloo most days. The 1938 stock was just wonderful. Think what those cars had seen! There were still a few old sets on the District as well, although these were few and far between.

Great video, thank you for sharing. I especially liked the Acton shuttle scenes. Both cars were present although 4167 only scraped in on the last shot. Incidentally, they were never Q23s, they remained G23s and couldnt work with converted Q stock. One of them was stencilled as Q23 after an overhaul but this was corrected later. They weren't identical either. 4176 was a west facing car and 4167 east facing based on original cab ends. They could only couple to each other if necessary.

The A Stock were the last LUL trains to be used on The East London Line before it was closed for complete rebuilding and extensions before becoming The London Overground East London Line. Which was extended beyond Shoreditch north to Highbury & Islington and south to West Croydon and Crystal Palace.

I remember the Chesham branch steam trains when I was a kid (I lived in Bovingdon). When my parents took my sister and me on a trip to London, sometimes we went via Boxmoor, (Hemel Hempstead), other times via Chesham (the local bus service ran between the two towns). Great seeing these videos. When was this video made? Judging by the cars I would say sometime in the late 1980s.

The D78 stock ( to give it its full title) was substituted to the East London Met for a period in the '80s while the A60 stock fleet was undergoing major works to permit opo operation which involved removing the guards control panels from the driving motor car passenger compartment and providing door controls in the cab for the train operator. There were several units of D stock built as full 3 car units - with a driving cab at each end - while the majority of that fleet comprised of 3 car units with a shunting cabinet at the unto coupling with limited motor control and controls for the coupler ( known to crews as undums - Uncoupling Nondriving Motor Cars)
