  • U.S. Navy sailors reload 20mm tungsten ammunition(offloading the dummy rounds at left and loading the tungsten ones(red sabots) at right) into the magazine drum of a Phalanx Closed-in Weapons System (Phalanx CIWS) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).
    Phalanx CIWS is a close-in weapon system for defense against incoming threats such as small boats, surface torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and helicopters.
    Phalanx CIWS mounts fire at a rate of 3,000 rounds per minute and have the magazine drum capacity of 1,550 rounds. The velocity of the rounds fired is about 3,600 feet per second or 1,100 m/s.

    For something that expends ammo very quickly, I assumed it can be reloaded efficiently and quickly, dayum, that must be a nightmare to reload in combat when you exhaust other means of defending against missiles.

      i think the ciws operate themselves mainly alone...try even selecting a high velocity anti ship missle (russian 'zirkon' or 'shipwreck') at high magnification with joystick or ball courser as target, pointing weapon to thread, then engaging... would take 2 long...prefer man in the loop method...just push button to make r2d2 go brrrt 🤗🤠
      and then the math
      reloading - 4 mins
      dumping the ammo - waaay to fast 😂

    Surely there's a better way to load the gun than having to refill the drum in slow motion, pausing every 100 rounds to add in the next ammo can of shells, first? Maybe a really big ammo can with another nearby that can be swapped out quickly?

      That's what I was thinking.
      Did they just bolt it on aftermarket, instead of incorporating into the ship with its own ammo depot underneath?

    • @christmasisawesome9348
      @christmasisawesome9348 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AnnoyingNewsletters That seems like a good idea but I don't think it would work out in the long term. Say they come up with a new type of CIWS and it requires larger space more space. That won't work. At the same time, the ship has to allocate a special area to store the ammo for each CIWS. That means all future gen ship has to account for this space.

      They're the dummy rounds meant for counterweight of the drum vs the radome (at least that's what the FCs told me). The FCs hated the changeover from "Metal Dummy Rounds" to "Plastic", as they have to load more of the plastic to properly counterbalance the system. But during the changeover, many FCs kept the metal Dummies as souvenirs...they ARE kinda cool to look on for display, when given a mirror finish.

    So if the gun delinks and ejects the shells as they are fired, then does the gun get out of balance when the weight of the ammunition is gone? Must be fun to reload the gun in less than ideal weather conditions!
