Yeah, the harness is the easiest way to get it working.
They sell a wiring harness that’s $20 on Amazon, works great
Yeah, I saw those too. I found out about the whole needing a wiring harness right in the middle of filming on a Saturday. I had all the parts I needed on-hand, which made it all free, so I really was only out about 20 minutes of my time to figure out the work-around.
I bought the Amazon harness assy, and cannot get my JW SPEAKER hi beam to come on. Benchtest the lites work fine. Argh... I will study & eventually get it working.

Of course you could flip that around and send 12v in pin 30 and the.low beam on 87a (NC) and the high beam on 87 (NO) and switch between low and high. Your way has the low side hot in both low and high. Your choice, either way is fine given the lower current draw. I've been quite impressed with LED headlight bulb tech lately. Just converted my 2000 Excursion over to LED bulbs and love the much better view at night while watching for Bambi. ☺
Yeah, you're right, running both low and high at the same time is basically a waste, since the high side also lights the low side by default. LEDs are getting better and better, I particularly like the projector lens housings. Good stuff.

This explains so much I’m beside myself on my stepdads 94 pickup I have low beam no high beam if I turn the blinker on the speedometer dips if I press the brake pedal the gauge cluster lights up I’m just sitting here like what in the dr suess is going on when I broke out my test light and all 3 prongs on the headlights had power but nothing turning on 😂

My GMC Safari must be wired like the Toyota as I bought the same LED headlights as you and they didn't work at all. Now I know what to do. Thank you.

Hey man, thanks for the tips! I get a question however, I bought some aftermarket led headlights and they illuminate with the stock wiring harness. Should I still install the aftermarket one?

superbrightleds.com - Look for the 194 COB bulbs in green. Make sure they are the COB ones.

I've experienced this while retrofitting LED projector headlight into Daihatsu Terios, it has a double ground trigger and what I've noticed the +12v supplied by the original harness is weak. What I've done is I used the original H4 harness "low beam portion" (+/ground) just to power of the relay while the pin 87 goes directly fused to +12 battery terminal and the pin 30 goes + input low beam and + input Hi-Beam of the LED headlight, to complete the Low beam circuit I directly connect its ground to the chassis while the Hi-Beam will get its ground from the original harness Hi-beam ground trigger. I work with newer 2016 Toyota car comes with H4 harness, it seems they've change the mapping to Dual Positive and single ground now. Do you know any further car manufacturer or year of production that uses this double ground H4 system?

i wanted the oem look. So I bought a glass housing that looks like a sealed halogen light. But I can put my own led H4 lights in it. The low and high lights turn on/off fine. If I don’t install the harness, do you think it could ruin the LEDs?
No, it shouldn't hurt them.
I bought the GS Power OEM style housing and a pair of auxbeam led 60 watt bulbs and they’re plug and play. No harness/relays needed. Maybe certain brands don’t work with reverse polarity

I have a 1997 Toyota 4Runner and I added Auxbeam LEDs, the high and low beams work, but my problem is I no longer have my high beam indicator on the dash, I’ve read that some people say you need a resistor, will this relay system fix my issue? What would you recommend? I don’t want to burn up my wiring harness or anything I want something safe.

The safest way to do it is to buy the pre-built harness that's available on Amazon.
Hey I tried to wire in my headlights. Followed what you said and I don’t have high beam. When I check it with a volt meter it’s should be reason 12+ but is only reading 1 ish

That's a pretty common thing. Toyota only supplied a single 12 volt wire to the headlights. Everyone else used two 12v wires, one for low and one for high. Instead, Toyota gave us one 12V wire and two ground wires. They switch high/low by changing the ground. The only way around it is to do a full-on relay deal. The diagram I drew on the whiteboard will work, for sure - unless something else is different in your situation.

Are Wagner H6054 better than Sylvania SilverLight's? I have the Sylvania and they are dim with a very poor light coverage pattern. I imagine the lens patterns are the same as probably both made in same Chinese factory.
You're probably right about the Chinesium. I'm not sure which ones I prefer. I've had both, but the Wagner bulb is probably better.
Hi! Great video, thank you for the information. I had worked most of this out for myself before finding your video thou8gh anhd now I need halp after having it all working with a different solutuon....I decided to take the ground of the new LED light and make it permaneant to the frame....leaving the hi and low connections on the 3 wire plug......so only 2 wires plugged into the trucks plug harness as the ground is sorted.....it all worked fine and now it doesnt. I have checked the fuse box - ok. I cant get hi beams now and the dash indicator also doesnt not light up. Must be another fuse box or hi beam relay?? After your video i think I need to look at the column switch but there is no reason why anything would come loose there as I hadnt touched its wiring. Any idea where that relay could be or what it looks like? Any help please?
If I remember correctly the relay is on the passenger side fender well. Keep in mind there's only one hot wire that goes to the headlights. There are two grounds that go to the headlights. The headlight dimmer switches between grounds for high/low
@@ProjectTimeGarage I think the previous owner has LED bars and used a relay....he left what looked like an unused relay ....I removed it and now they don't work. I lucked into having them work and then messed it up without knowing either ...I think. Thanks for the reply!

i bought the same headlights for my 97 tacoma, they came with the harness but only highbeam works which is insanly bright but low beam is barely bright, like you cant even see anything with lowbeam. any ideas of what that could be?

I still can’t figure out why my low beam isn’t working and my high beams do but the high indicator doesn’t come on on my 1998 Tacoma I bought a harness see if that works 😭

You have one of the headlight wires shorted to ground.

Are both high and low beam elements supposed to be on at the same time when you switch to high beam?
Not by default. The truck removes ground from one side and puts it on the other side between high and low beam.
I would be inclined to make it operate the same. Do you know if the replacement LED headlights are designed to run both high and low at the same time? I prefer to stay with intended design if they are meant to run only one at a time.
@@randallflaten2620 The LEDs are a little rough to install - See, Toyota used a single hot lead to the common side of the bulb, then switched the ground depending on high/low beam. Every other manufacturer in the world seems to have used a single common ground, then switched the 12V leads at the headlight.
@@ProjectTimeGarage Thx for the reply. I can handle the electricals but need to know if LED headlights are designed to have both low and high LEDs on when using high beam. Once I know that, I can figure out the relay/wiring needed. I appreciate your replies.

They have DOT numbers on them, but who knows for sure.

Nah, wiring on those should be plug and play. Easy stuff. They'll look great too.
Why not just replace the Toyota switch with a Ford or Chevy switch?
The Toyota switch in integrated into the turn signal multifunction switch. It would have been a fabrication job, plus having to go out and buy a switch. What I did was accomplished in 15 minutes using stuff I had on-hand. Way simple and the interior still keeps all its stock equipment.
I guess Ford actually did have a better idea when they designed the Econoline, since that doesn't need relays for the lights to work correctly, just plug and play.

@@timothybales8428i ran into the same issue. I understand the solution is to add a small halogen bulb so it can trigger the high beam indicator. I just dont know how is done.

If your one relay quits working you lose both headlights. As you said, relays are cheap. Use one on each headlight and carry a spare.
