Thank you for the wiring problem, I am 16 years old, and I am in progress of restoring my brother's old 1996 toyota tacoma, and I bought LED lights for it, couldn't find the problem with the wiring until I stumbled upon you video, thank you!
Incredible! Someone who doesn't edit out the errors, and instead turns the entire situation into something we can all learn from! Awesome. An instant subscribe from me anyway.
I actually really appreciate that you kept your "failed" first attempt at "plug and play" because that's EXACTLY what I experienced when I went to plug in my LED light. Same as you, I swapped the wiring around (actually tried many other combos too), but kept getting High Beams on all the time, and when flashing my high beams, it turned off... Then searched a bit and found that Toyotas are switched ground, and these lamps assume a more standard switched positive. So we need the relay wiring kit you ordered (or I guess you can wire it yourself, but for $18, the parts and time to do it is worth that much). Had I seen your video before I started this project, I would have known what to expect and saved some time, but oh well, it's always trial and error with these old Toyotas. BTW, my car is a 1986 MR2 (AW11), and I also have a 1988 Celica (ST165) and 1992 Celica (ST185): they all had the same issue - pretty safe to assume any old Toyotas with the H6054 7x6 headlights have the same wiring. P.S. Also got a good laugh about the rusted headlight ring retainer screw. Those damn things are always rusted on every Toyota I had and the Vise Grip method is my favorite method too!
I just want to personally thank you for this video. I have a 1990 Toyota pick up that I just put some of these in. @@kashoutcris9487 No. Did you buy H4 harness for the head lights? I had a problem with getting the brights to come on, but that was caused by my switch, not the lights.
Thank you for uploading this! It really helped me out. I lucked out and didn’t need to unscrew the metal frame around the headlight, I got new hologram ones and they came with it. All I need to do was remove the bolts that keep it in place and position it and a spring.
Thank you for making this video! I installed a set of these same lights I got on ebay last year in my 87 and had run into the same issue with mine which never came with the adapter or instructions.. so I only set up my low beams and was dragging my feet on the idea of having to rewire the factory switching. Now that I know about this adapter I wont have to! Otherwise I've been running these lights for a year and enjoy mine too
Good video. I went from using one, to using two H4 harnesses. The stock Toyota has redundancy (separate fuses for left and right). This setup only uses one Toyota fuse and has only one fuse going from the battery to both headlights. Either fuse blows and both headlights go out at the same time. With two harnesses, I'm using both Toyota fuses left and right, and now running separate fuses for left and right headlights from the battery. Interesting, the high beam indicator light on the dash didn't work with one harness, but now works with two. I simply cut off the part of the harness I was no longer using that went to the second headlight, capped off the exposed wire ends with small wire nuts and some electrical tape. I then added wire to the hot on one harness to reach across to the battery. I used the leftover wire and conduit to lengthen the hot and soldered and taped the connections on the hot. Then it's just plug and play. A good investment for only 17 dollars for the second harness. Much, much safer to have each side fused separate so you don't risk losing both headlights at once!
@@stevenshackelford1032 The harness has the relay in it. Connect the harness to the headlight on one end and to the battery on the other. In the middle there is a place to plug in your old (stock) headlight plug to control the new harness and relay. I used 2 harnesses, so I have 2 fuses. One for each headlight instead of 1 fuse for both headlights. I didn't like the thought of losing both headlights at once if the single fuse blew.

Unplugged new headlights and replugged in the old and now get high and low beams through the original headlights. Do you have any suggestions or ideas why the new lights only have high beams?
Funny you mentioned this... I just saw a little moisture in one of the headlights for the first time a couple of days ago, after I washed the truck. It appears to have gone away now.
I put on the led headlights and some plug and play led tail lights but my truck doesn’t idle anymore after installing the tail lights and it starts shocking me once I crank it over and touch any metal
I'd start by removing each light one at a time and seeing if it still shocks you. When the problem goes away, you've found the culprit. Sounds like some wires are crossed somewhere and causing a short.
I have the exact same ones i just bought this month. Amd they dont fit in the metal housing behind the chrome trim.. i had to cut out the metal housing.. and that caused the adjustments to now be riding alont the new headlights rear housing.. havent turned it on yet due to truck is getting worked on.... So im wondering how yours fit when i have the same light and truck also

Its now the actaul headlight thatll pivot around... im just hoping itll still adjust correctly. And hope its as stable
any idea if this harness would work for an ‘88? also what lift kit do you have on your ‘85? thanks in advance, it’s hard to find info on these durable lil trucks!
Hey does the plug to know when it switched have to go into the passenger side? Bc my batter is on the drive side and I hooked it up the same way but mine still will not turn on. I have a 1997 Tacoma
Have the same lights on a 1989 Toyota pickup truck and when I would turn the lights on they would flicker and turn off then I would turn then off and on again And they would come on. Now they don’t turn on just the high beams come on. Do you think it could be a wiring issue or the light burnt out ? Both side had gone out
Damn I did exactly this. Before I got the harness, all the lights in the new fixture came on when I turned on low beams, this is after I switched the black and yellow wire like you did (I also suspect the previous owner switched the lows and highs because the factory lights were so dim). After getting the harness I did exactly what you did and nothing. I cleaned the grounds and am sure I did exactly what you did but neither lows or highs worked when I tested them. I will post an update if I figure it out in case anyone is experiencing the same but if you have any ideas of something simple I may be doing wrong or not checking they would be greatly appreciated!
Did you try switching the wires back? I didn't even use that short extension harness that allows you to switch the wires that came with the LED headlights after I bought the full $20 relay harness.
You'll need to splice into the factory wires for those lights. I didn't get those kind because I wanted to leave the original wiring alone in case I ever go back to stock.
I have a 1990 Toyota Hilux and I was wondering how do you keep the corner lights on while the main headlights are switched on as well? How did you wire it? Please lmk ASAP !! Thank you in advance
Hey fellas working on a 92 pickup I changed the bulbs to LEDs but the blinkers and flashers blink way too fast. Any idea what I can do to fix this issue?
@ just some aftermarket bulbs that I purchased on Amazon. They had the same type of connection but maybe there just cheap. They look very nice and bright the fast blinking is just not what I wanted

So far no complaints but I am going to aim the lights a little lower because they’re so bright. Nobody has flashed me yet, but I don’t drive it at night very often.

Are your high beams on all the time when you turn the lights on, or do you mean you have no low beams and only high beams?
So this video is a year old, how are these holding up now? Any issues after a year?
Funny you mentioned this... I just saw a little moisture in one of the headlights for the first time a couple of days ago, after I washed the truck. It appears to have gone away now.
@@6thGearGarage but are they still just as bright?
@@Valtrexthief Yes they are still just as bright as when they were new.
Ahhh this was my exact problem. Thanks dude.
Glad I could help!
Will that harness work for any headlight set?
I've only used it for Toyota trucks, but it may work for others as well, as long as the plug is the same (H4)
@@6thGearGarage awesome! Yea I have a 94 toyo pickup and the lights I’m looking at got the H4 plugs. Thank you 😎
I put on the led headlights and some plug and play led tail lights but my truck doesn’t idle anymore after installing the tail lights and it starts shocking me once I crank it over and touch any metal
So im wondering how yours fit when i have the same light and truck also
Mine fit without any cutting, but you're the second person in a week that said they had to trim the metal housing to get these to fit. What year is your truck?
@@6thGearGarage 1986 pickup 4wd.. they must've gone with a different housing or something.. its just slightly bulkier on each corners.. i tried trimming just a lil. But it wouldnt seat.. had to trim it 180.. so it now doesnt rely on the housing bracket to pivet for adjustments. Its now the actaul headlight thatll pivot around... im just hoping itll still adjust correctly. And hope its as stable
How are your hradlamps holding up? Any issues or further recommendations?..thks..j
They've held up great with no problems. Driving at night is so much better now.
@@6thGearGarage thks..jc
any idea if this harness would work for an ‘88? also what lift kit do you have on your ‘85? thanks in advance, it’s hard to find info on these durable lil trucks!
Yes, the harness will also work on an 88. This truck has a 4" Pro Comp lift, plus a 2" body lift.
Life saver 🙌🙌🙌 this video rules.
Great video super helpful
just got new lights today for my lowered 87
The light output from these is amazing. Probably better for a lowered truck so you won't blind other drivers in a lifted truck.
Did you get the high beam indicator to light up on the dash when flipping to highs?
Yeah I didn’t have any issues with that 👍
Ya I the same issue, lights are awesome but lost high beam indicator on dash?
Hey does the plug to know when it switched have to go into the passenger side? Bc my batter is on the drive side and I hooked it up the same way but mine still will not turn on. I have a 1997 Tacoma
The side should not make any difference. I’d check and clean the grounds
@@6thGearGarage thanks I’ll definitely try it
So where's the link to buy that harness I'm in need of it
There's a link in the description. Mine is still working great.
Have the same lights on a 1989 Toyota pickup truck and when I would turn the lights on they would flicker and turn off then I would turn then off and on again And they would come on. Now they don’t turn on just the high beams come on. Do you think it could be a wiring issue or the light burnt out ? Both side had gone out
I’d check the grounds of your harness first.
Just completed this and everything worked except for the side marker lights and side turn signal on the pax side. Any suggestions?
It sounds like a wiring/connection issue, assuming the bulb is good
Do you have any idea how to put a foglamp into the bumper of a 1989 Toyota 4runner sr5, any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks
Sorry I don’t, I haven’t owned a 4Runner yet to learn on.
loyal Yoda gang here considered me a fan., so I subscribe. that ryhmed
Where did you get the front bumper please? I have one 1987 and I am looking for it.
Best,
Ricardo
The steel tube part is custom made
@@6thGearGarage do you have the draw and sizes of the tubes? I love it and would love to do one for my baby. Thanks man
You got the link how you doing got the toyota corolla sr5 1987 can do it my car thank you video how much can got it whered got the lithg cable
Yep, Links are in the description.. thanks for watching!
@@6thGearGarage ok thank s much
Did that headlight kit come with both lights or just one ?
They come with both lights.
I forgot to add, great video and very thorough. Thank you for making such an in depth, trouble shooting guide for this!
Did you try switching the wires back? I didn't even use that short extension harness that allows you to switch the wires that came with the LED headlights after I bought the full $20 relay harness.
Yes I did, If I remember correctly the hot wire stayed on the left, yellow on top and black and the right correct?
@@Yabishp it's been a while... I'll have to take a look to remember
Very nice truck, I love your DIY videos, you are the best. BTW what is the color code of the RED paint? I like it!
Victor Valdez thanks!! The red is called Vermillion Red and it’s an oem color from an F-150.
I just bought some head lights with DRL on the edges for my 88 runner. could you make a vid on how to link those drl with the stock yellow drl's
That is how all of the US Toyota trucks of this generation come from the factory.
Hey I installed LEDs into my truck and got the harness but only my high beam works
What truck/year?
Hey fellas working on a 92 pickup I changed the bulbs to LEDs but the blinkers and flashers blink way too fast. Any idea what I can do to fix this issue?
@@rudyalvarez8339 what kind of lights did you use?
@ just some aftermarket bulbs that I purchased on Amazon. They had the same type of connection but maybe there just cheap. They look very nice and bright the fast blinking is just not what I wanted
You will probably need to install a resistor because the relay thinks the bulb is burned out because LED's draw less power.
What’s the link for the front two bumpers? Please?
The lower front bumper is custom made
Does this also pertain to 2nd gen 4runners?
Yes this setup will be the same for second gen 4runners.
@@6thGearGarage thanks!!
That was super funny and totally Kool. Thanks.
Do I need to pull the bumper if I only want to replace the glass beam with a stock one
No need to remove the front bumper at all. Just pop the grill off.
@@6thGearGarage well I ment gill but thanks. I was kinda hoping I didn't have to do that
Here for my Toyota supra lighting lol. Happens to be the exact same on my 87!
Good to know Toyota was consistent!
Gracias! saludos de Guatemala :D
this was super helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Glad it helped!
Hey, thanks for all the videos on your Toyota. I just got an 84 Toyota Pickup. I replaced the headlight with the TRUCKMALL brand like you did in this video Do you have a lot of people flashing their brights at you? Did you make any adjustments to the lights? What do you think of the lights after a year of use?
So far no complaints but I am going to aim the lights a little lower because they’re so bright. Nobody has flashed me yet, but I don’t drive it at night very often.
@@6thGearGarage I think I’ll do the same since I do a lot of night driving. Good luck with yours and thanks for the help.
Hi, I installed LEDs with the arnes in my 88 toyota truck, but just the low beam works. please i need you help!
I would check to make sure you have the connections for the lights in the correct order.
@6thGearGarage i used the extra wiring cable to change te position and it works, but the lights are inverted vs switch lever.
Hight beam when swicht is in Low position.
Low beam when swicht is in hight position.
I did many combinations in the cables in dosnt works it.
@ you may need to re-pin the extra harness to switch the high and low wires. Toyota light wiring is different than most other vehicles.
