Yep, it bombed so bad in Japan that there were only three basic requirements:
1. No altering the names ANY of the characters (including ghosts).
2. No altering the way ghosts were killed off, as this involves points 1 and 2: they're based off Asian folklore, so 'localizing' would butcher it.
3. No changing the meaning of the episode.
Dub is the only way for Ghost Stories XD

I watch all anime dubbed. I know that's some sort of "sin" or some shit lol but I work on stuff while I watch so this way I dont have to always be looking to get everything
The original script was too bland and terrible so the show tanked pretty badly in Japan.
When the translation rights were passed they decided to hire comedy writers to salvage it and we have this golden gem born.
It was infamous for being bad.

Actually, they took the English dub, gave it Japanese subs, then released it in Japan. That's what sold well, not the original version.
Barret9559 I mean yeah, if it sold well, its cause of the dub version's script that was translated over into Japanese, I mean, if the the anime did well on it's own in Japan, then the creators wouldn't have ever let the dub cast have nearly free rain over the script so saying that "no, it wasn't the dub, it actually did well in Japan" just doesnt make sense at all.
Actually they just told the voice actors to do what ever the hell they want to as long as they font change the names la the characters and basic plot
Don't bother with the subs, its pretty terrible. the dub is the only saving grace for this show.

Maybe I meant it like "serious face", cause sometimes I use it to mean the character kind of made a face that looked very serious, even tho ppl don't always use it that way so it doesn't translate well. Why make the "🧐" face? Doesn't that usually come with a judgy tone?

You don't want to watch the Japanese one. It's garbage to the highest degree. Like, GARBAGE. The English dub makes it much better. "RUN!!! RUN FROM THE LADY FROM THE RING!!! Wait... Which horror movie are we ripping off again?"
EDIT: To put it into context, the Japanese version BOMBED in Japan. They went to the dubbers and said: "You can't change the names of the characters, and you can't change how they banish ghosts." Those were pretty loose rules, and the Anime sucked, so they went WILD!!!

l336l It probably didn't sell well because the source material has been adapted over and over and over again so the anime was pretty late to the bandwagon and didn't really bring anything new to the table so that's probably why the fresh English dub sold way better.

This is the official dub, in case you didn't see my comment before. They couldn't translate properly so said FUCK IT. We can't read this shit! EDIT: Also the show flopped straight off a cliff in Japan so I guess that too.
Except not really. The show was a huge flop in Japan which is why they gave the english dub company the freedom to go off script. So, they could translate fine, they just didn't give a fuck about the original script.

I heard a different story. maybe it's a mixture of both then.
A mixture of both, the show flopped, the translations were horrible, no one cared about what happened to it since the people who made it kind of just disowned it, and the dub team decided to just make their own lines to fit the movement of the mouths, while keeping the names and the basic story line of the show. It's quite literally, an official abridged dub.. Kind of like Neo Yokio, except Ghost stories was treated less seriously.
I kind of want to watch the original now to see what made it flop.

BUT the Dub is amazing, defiantly worth a full watch, even if just to say you did, episode 9 is my fav, nothing beats the rabbit scene.

One of them was a dick and kept pausing/rewinding the vid because the rest of us kept laughing at the dialogue, complaining that "he couldn't watch it with us laughing all the time." Fun times.

3:05 You know, the whole "black cats are bad luck" thing actually has a basis. The time period when this came about was a time when we still traveled at night using torches/lanterns with oil. If you are walking in the dark, with a crappy light source, and a black cat walks up to your feet, you're going down. The cat gets stepped on, tripping you, it screeches, fire gets everywhere, your britches are filled to overflowing, and a witch did it. Naturally.

This is actually a really funny series, imma keep watching it.
From what I understand, the subbed version of Ghost Stories was suppose to follow a lot Japanese lore and legends. You should totally do a reaction to the "Funniest Moments" clips though it does cover all the episodes and is like 8 videos long.

ADR is additional dialogue replacement. I only know it from live action movies. When the acting is fine but the dialogue delivered sounds bad (for whatever reason), an actor can replace in ADR by recreating what they said matching their mouth movements (or they just genmerate additional takes). I guess it makes sense in this case that the ADR is the actual revoicing, as many people make that mistake (even in the industry). So yes, I think the ADR script team was in charge of the... wording.

When the company dubing this had full autonomy
