For context: this is 100% real.
There are conflicting stories about how well the original did in Japan, whether it sold well or poorly.
But when it was brought to the US, they were told to do whatever so long as they didn't recut the episode.
So the lead writer and the voice actors got together over drinks and just pitching nonsense, and they wrote down what they could.
Then recorded it in earnest in the booth a few weeks later.
The dub became a niche classic and was latter redubbed back into Japanese a few years ago for the anniversary of the manga it was based on.
They weren't expecting it to do so well, and it effectively became an inspiration for early abridged anime series on TH-cam.
Not just no recuts. They were also not allowed to change the character names, or the manner in which the ghost were defeated.
It actually did well in Japan.
There were two separate dubs to it. The original then this one later. That's what I heard at least.
The rest is history.

but someone called me out on another video so I looked it up and it seems the production company gave different information in different press statements
it did very well during its airing and still has a following, but the actual home media sales were low
leading to a loss of revenue
which is probably why they sold the overseas broadcasting rights with such low requirements
Regardless of the debate on how well the show did domestically but they fact they sold it on the low and said have fun says enough I think. Like no one's doing that with Naruto 😂

Yeah it tanked in Japan so they sold it to American dubbing, and basically said do whatever you want except altering to main plot. So literally unhinged dubbing commenced😂🤣

It doesn’t make any white jokes but other than that you’re right.
It’s interesting because there are so many shows that try to do the “make fun of everyone” type stuff, but this is the only show I’ve seen where it actually works. I think that’s because there is not one character that they try to make “good”. They never really have a moral or message, and everyone is just kind of a massive shitbag and that’s perfectly acceptable. It’s kinda nice.

Maybe not exactly like this, but if you're looking for a dub that feels like an Abridged series, I'd recommend Samurai Pizza Cats.
FUNimation's dub of Crayon Shin-chan is similar.

It's literally the best dub ever. I wish they made more like this.
There is anime called my first girlfriend is a gal and they did something similar though not to this extent. They did it because I guess the mc and a lot of the characters were pretty unlikable in the original. There is an anime in that changed the show with its dub called black lagoon a different way. They took out a lot of the anime like dialogue and just turned it into a 2000s action movie dialogue with a lot of swearing.(Original had a lot of Engrish)
@zirath17 He was because he did get mad when the little girl was pushed over so it wasn't just dub but he wasn't made fun of as much as he was in the dub.
It's a great dub, but I'm kinda glad that this isn't the direction they take with all shows either. xD
They should threaten anime that do bad to get foreign dubs like these. xD
@YuyuHakurei I agree but to an extent, I think more dubs should be creative when wording certain things. Alot of the time they are just copying the translation. it brings you in more when they have jokes and references that the audience can understand for low quality anime I think it should be more like this but for main stream anime na it would ruin it but I'd also be lying if I didn't say they could be a little more creative when doing a dub you can say 1 thing 100 different ways and it just feels like they've been getting real lazy with the dubs it's no wonder why most don't like them
At least in English it is. I still prefer the Mexican dub for Dotto Koni-chan.
I always love seeing people’s first time seeing this dub. I’ve met Monica Rial who voiced the religious girl and from the stories she told they seemed to have so much fun with this. There were still a few really funny clips that wasn’t included in this compilation
I used to think she was cool but then the false accusations happened .

The same person who accused Vic Mignogna originally(Monica jumped on a bandwagon) also accused Todd Haberkorn but nothing happened because it was already proven that she is a liar so Todd was fine. He still has his career.
Hearing the INSANELY famous/well-known english VA's on this is just absolutely hilarious. This dub is like a perfect summary of what humor was like back then. No chance it would ever be made today

Also, the actual anime in Japanese is kind of like Scooby Doo. It's a ghost of a week type show where spooky things happen and they solve the problem. The dub version however was only given 2 conditions. Don't change the name of the characters and they can't change how the monsters were defeated. Obviously that meant they could do whatever they wanted basically.
The "Christian" girl is the same english VA (Monica Rial) as:

So fun thing about this.....Ghost Stories in Japan failed hard.....so when they had a dub they only had a few rules.........1: The Ghosts must be defeated in the same way and 2: you must keep the names the same.
That was literally it. And so we got the best dub ever because all the actors had literally no rules. Its sooooo good and so funny and a lot of people find it offensive, but its soo good because this was made back in 200(2-6) and people are so offended but like....its a spirit detective story that was made more amazing by this dub which could be considered one of the originators of abridged series......hope you had a good time at least.....dont take it seriously at all.

Thebasic story of the production of this is that when the original japanese dumb was given to the eng dub studio the anime wasnt ding so good in popularity so they basically told the eng dub team: yea u guys can do whatever you want we dont gaf.Its pretty much just a bunch of americans saying american things, the only requirement is that they had to keep the same story and make it flow like the original.
It did just fine in Japan. It was the first English dub that didn't perform well. This is the second English dub.
Yes but the animax dub is basically lost media onlt eps 5-9 were ever found so it basically doesnt exist to most people. But im talking about the worldwide audienc ethe animax dubs were only released in asia and are sony produced so they probably have them in their vault somewhere. But there are some episodes out there. And that dub isnt even good, so the ADV version is the definitive dub version.@@ZeallustImmortal
