One thing that hardly gets mentioned. They keep referring to the Tributes as Men and Women instead of the children they actually are. It is a real world tactic in the news and authorities to describe children. It allows us to place blame on them and remove the compassion/care we as social animals naturally feel for our young. Subtle tactic but shown to be incredibly effective.
Please remember as you watch all the films that Katniss is just a girl (16 or 17 years old) keeping her family alive. She only ever wanted to save her sister. A lot of viewers get frustrated and want her to choose a lover, team Peeta or team Gale. Just show her young character some grace ❤.
Exactly! Especially without her inner monologue, she can come across as cold. But she really does actually care quite a lot about Gayle and Peta in a protective kind of way. She just doesn't see a future with marriage or kids. She's just surviving.
I hated how much the movie marketing played up the pick a boy aspect when it was clear in the first book her head wasn’t anywhere near romance. But the Twilight “team” stuff made a lot of money so they tried to duplicate that.
Exactly! Back when I first read the books (when I was still in the YA target demographic lol) I *loved* the fact that Katniss was not at all focused on romance. She specifically says/thinks that maybe someday she can consider that if and when her family is truly safe - but not before. I loved that because it felt so much more real to me. She’s in the middle of a desperate battle for survival, romance isn’t a high priority and it would be strange if it was.
I appreciate that y'all had more sympathy for Cato at the end of the games than most other people who watch the movie. They're trained from a young age and given all this propaganda about "pride to their district," but actually going thru the games is a really scary and raw thing and at they end of the day he's only 18. Some high school age kid. By the end of the games he's so visibly damaged, lost his district partner Clove n failed to protect her... it's sad
That's something we tried to stay mindful of & talked about in the end. Its hard to be aware of it by the way the movie is scripted & how they speak about the kids but it hit when he talked about all he knows how to do is kill.
Notice how Katniss’ dress at the end is a soft pastel frilly thing and her hair and makeup is softer than before the games? Cinna styled her that way purposefully to make her look younger and more innocent to help her sell the love struck girl angle. Everything he designed for her had purpose, he was always trying to help her survive. He’s a truly good and kind man who disagreed with sending children to die and did what he could to make a difference.
Exactly. I was thought about Lenny Kravitz play on this. Of course, you had no background of this character in the movies, but somehow he doesn't make Cinna look like a creepy or anything, even tho it's a 17 old girl and a very masculine adult. It's spot on, really
@@matth_rod yeah he did a really great job, the whole quiet calm demeanor and simple caring gestures read like an older brother adopting a scared young person as a sister to look out for. I saw one reactor misread the kiss on the forehead (or maybe it was cheek) as she's about to go into the first arena but I think that's just a sad reflection on today's society.
The three finger sign is a sign that is old in district 12 and hasn’t been used in a very long time. In the books, this sign becomes significant and keep in mind, the districts are NOT allowed to communicate with each other because communication could lead to rebellion. The sign means respect and sorrow for a loss
Appreciate you sharing all the info! We can see how the communication would start a rebellion, President Snow had been doing a great job at keeping the Districts at bay and not conversing it seems. Katniss was the one contestant they didn't need joining the Games lmao turned it on it's head real quick.
@@DaKidsReact Reminds me of forbidding slaves from gathering without overseers, learning to read and write. Lack of communication can stifle rebellion against oppression.
my favorite thing about that moment in the books is that katniss never thought of herself that anybody really cared about but basically eveyone in 12 knew her and knew what she did for them by hunting to bring home food to keep them from starving and seeing how much she loved her family to sacrifice herself because she even says that "in 12 tribute is synonymous with corpse" so they saw her as someone important and someone theyd miss and thats why the gave her that symbol
46:32 you’re so right! Rue, even as young as she was, was a very important member of her district. Her whistles and “communication” with the mockingjays back home are how she signals to the workers in the field regarding safety or having them move to certain areas. She’s also the oldest of 5 (people in her district are grain workers, and they have a lot of kids to work in the fields) so she is one of the main provider for her family. She gets picked partly because she has put her name is so many times to feed her younger siblings just like Katniss and Gale had to.
@@Blossom_Screen Rue is a real one, it hurt to lose her and then see the impact she had on her district. Like I (Sheim) said under another comment, if you are poor it’s literally a lose lose for you. Happy we got to see Katniss and Rue team up though!
@blossom_screen She couldn't put her name in that many times, they weren't allowed to put their name in until they were 12, and she was 12. Like Prim, the odds just weren't in her favor. I'm sure she prolly did have her name in a couple times, I don't think it would've bn many.
Detail from the book: Peeta burned the bread on purpose -- and his mother beat him for it and told him to give it to the pigs. Notice it's burned on just one end, leaving good bread for her. Also notice how he looks behind him before throwing her the bread. He didn't want his mother to see him giving Katniss the bread. Peeta allied with 1 and 2 to protect Katniss. He led them away from her.
We didn't catch the bread being burned on purpose, Peeta is a W. We definitely catch on that he is helping Katniss after awhile but it was just crazy to see him with District 1 and 2 when the Games started.
I think he was also trying to get her the bow. The movie did the bread scene objectively wrong. Too many reactors miss it entirely, or think he's being contemptuous. And since the screenplay depends on Katniss understanding it as she did in the book, that means the choice of how to present it was... questionable.
@@DaKidsReactit’s also important to note that in the books, Katniss and Peeta were only 11 years old when that happened. Katniss and Prim were starving to death and their mother was in a catatonic depression after the father’s death. At only 11, Katniss was still too young to sign up to have her name entered in the Reaping extra times to get food rations, so they hadn’t really eaten anything in days/weeks. The day of the bread incident, Katniss had left their home and collapsed under the tree intending to never stand up again. That bit of food gave her enough energy to think a little more clearly, get up, and use some of the hunter/gatherer knowledge from her father to start feeding their family again. They would have all died without that loaf of bread.
@@babs3241yeah, I think they really should have spent more time on that. It was a pivotal moment for her and the only reason she even considers any sort of alliance with Peeta. Seems like the film team was assuming anyone watching would have someone next to them who read the books to explain everything which is not a great strategy.
@@DaKidsReactdont beat yourself up, the movie did a horrible job of showing that katniss actually appreciates peeta for throwing the bread. I thought she hated him because he treated her like a beggar
I never seen a reacters that pick up so much. Even Peeta's mother's cruelty. Rue's death makes me cry every sngle time RIP Rue. Thank you for the reaction.
Peeta lost his leg as a result of his injuries in the games, but that is left out of the movies. Being an amputee has an impact on his abilities and how people view him later on. Just something to remember if you see him struggling or people worrying about him!
What’s not mentioned in the movies is that haymich’s game had double the tributes (48 tributes). And he killed people by luring them to the edge of the map (which is why the game makers shot fire balls at katniss, because she was almost at the edge of the map). Because of that, they killed his whole family and his girlfriend to show the consequences of cheating. So not only does he drink because of having to mentor kids that eventually die, but because of what happened after his game.
I truly believe when Peeta congratulated her for getting an 11 that he was concerned, not jealous. Knowing what she did, he is worried the gamemakers are putting a target on her. That's what pushes him to say what he says in the interview 🤔🙏
That’s a really good take. I guess we didn’t see that way right away🤔 we were just hype for her getting that 11 but once the games started we could tell there was definitely a target on her. Peeta always had her wellbeing in mind, he’s a real genuine dude.
A detail from the book that was left out of the film is about the mutant dogs at the end. In the book, they have the faces of the fallen tributes. They thought it would make them too disturbing, and they were probably right.
Though there has been a situation where the Tributes were voted for, in this case Gale has 42 slips because of his age (he is 18 and there is one slip for every year you are eligible) and also because he has taken food from the Capitol (if you are starving you can enter your name again to get food). This policy ensures that the poorest people are most often picked.
It's crazy how they have this system set up, I see why so many people are against it. The Capitol looks for entertainment while some of the Districts fight to survive. Can't wait to see how much you guys like are reaction to Catching Fire!
It isn’t shown in the movies, but in the books the people of District 11 send Katniss a loaf of bread for how she treated Rue. From the book which is written from Katniss’ point of view: I’m about to haul my packs into a tree to make camp when a silver parachute floats down and lands in front of me. A gift form a sponsor. But why now? I’ve been in fairly good shape with supplies. Maybe Haymitch’s noticed my despondency and is trying to cheer me up a bit. Or could it be something to help my ear? I open the parachute and find a small loaf of bread. It’s not the fine white of the Capitol stuff. It’s made of dark ration grain and shaped in a crescent. Sprinkled with seeds. I flashback to Peeta’s lesson on the various district breads in the Training Center. This bread came from District 11. I cautiously lift the still warm loaf. What must it have cost the people of District 11 who can’t even feed themselves? How many would’ve had to do without to scrape up a coin to put in the collection for this one loaf? It had been meant for Rue, surely. But instead of pulling the gift when she died, they’d authorized Haymitch to give it to me. As a thank-you? Or because, like me, they don’t like to let debts go unpaid? For whatever reason, this is a first. A district gift to a tribute who’s not your own. I lift my face and step into the last falling rays of sunlight. “My thanks to the people of District Eleven,” I say. I want them to know I know where it came from. That the full value of the gift has been recognized.
Wow that's amazing, we appreciate you sharing this with us! We can see it's a lot more that is within the books than the movies of course. Can't wait to bring you guys the rest of the movies!!
oh I NEED to read Book 1. i only watched Movie 1 and then read Book 2 and 3 while waiting for the movies. I can't believe i did that lol. I have to get that book and the songbird one too.
I've said this in the past, but it's always true: Donald Sutherland makes a really good villain as President Snow. It's kind of the same paradox with Imelda Staunton/Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter: a delightful actor playing such a vile, despicable character. Also....RIP Rue. She did not deserve the fate she was given.
@@gdhaney136 My 8th grade teacher once had the attitude of Umbridge (all that was missing was getting a sick thrill off of physically torturing students)
man, sometimes it feels like you guys are catering your content specifically for me and me alone! always on a roll with my fave shows and movies, it's insane! I can't believe I'm getting breaking bad, batman, hunger games, and (soon) squid games all at once! so this is what it feels like to be spoiled rotten...
23:01 No, Haymitch was saying that Peeta had requested to have their trainings separately. He was explaining to her that at that point in the process, a lot of tributes make the same request since there can only be one winner of the Hunger Games - despite there being a male and female picked from each district.
Haymitch also won his games - and when he did (the way he won) using the forcefield to his advantage it made president snow mad and he took it out on haymitch killing his entire family
So all that plus winning the games and having to go threw that (also haymitcjes games had double the people) so extra trauma and then having to go threw it all year after year with these new kids that he knows he can’t help. Yeah it makes so much sense why he’s in so much pain and copes the way he does
The way katniss sees the world is different than others, she had to provide for his family after her father die on a coalmine explosion, her mom got so depressed that she couldn’t even move, The scene with the bread is explained better in the book, Katniss was about to die of hunger, the bread that Petta threw her gave her the strength to continue since the next day was her 12th birthday in which she could ask for food from the capitol in exchange that they put their name more times
Another book detail that the movie did weirdly--the Mockingjay pin wasn't a secret. (Nor did it ever go to Prim, but that doesn't matter.) Katniss's friend Marge (the niece of a fallen tribute who originally owned it) gave it to her as a district token, and it was on her dress when she got to the Capitol, which is how Cinna knew about it. She wore it openly, and that's sort of a plot point as the story goes on, so it was really weird that they acted like it was a secret.
You can notice it more in the early movies but it is consistent, the entire series actually based on America's racial and civil rights history.rue and thresh for example rfm district 11 which is where Georgia Florida Alabama and Louisiana are now, district 11 is black the work mostly in orchards and on plantations they also have the highest number of peacekeepers in their district and their peacekeepers are known for being the most violent. The parallels towards police brutality towards black people in the south is pretty clear. Another one is district 6 which is where Detroit Michigan is, they are the district that manufactures all the transportation the trains and the cars that people in the capital allowed to use, and the district is known for having a severe morphling and drug epidemic similar to the crack epidemic in Detroit. Another reference is at one point effie says "panem today, panem tommorow, panem forever", that statement is a direct copy reference to a speech that was given by the governor of Alabama in the 60s when the federal government and the president ordered it all America's public schools had to desegregate, Alabama shockingly refused to desegregate in the governor gave a speech stating that they would never force their darling white children to be in the same room as is insert "racial slur", and he ended his speech in "segregation today segregation tomorrow segregation forever". The capital is where Utah is Andy Rocky mountains and you'll notice a large portion of the population is white in the capital and obviously very wealthy and they behaved and dressed in a way that everyone thinks is weird, this is a parallel to the incredibly large Mormon population in Utah which is predominantly white known for having some strange bigoted and discriminatory practices often fairly well off in their entire wardrobe especially the strange secrets underwear, in general with a lot of people see Mormons is being a kind of diet cult, is very similar to the way the capitol citizens look. But for as poor as absolutely everyone is the capital actually paid to install large flat screen TVs in every Panama citizens house that have sensors on them to force people to watch the games because before that a lot of people obviously especially if their children are in the games would refuse to watch. now the games are a huge money Maker for the capital because of the betting system merchandise tickets to see the shows like any other successful reality television show. The districts have ever been there not providing any monetary benefit to the capital because of the games so instead there for us to watch it as a flex by the capital. The center of the TV screens serve to ensure that the decisions are watching so they can actually look through the mother see how many people in the room and ensure that all of their eyes are trained on the screen so you can't even sit and face a wall in the same room as the TV to try to avoid having to see it they also are incapable of changing the volume so they're forced to hear whatever is happening. So successful is the fact that the districts are separated those trains the road on are the only real way between districts is diagram hovercraft both of which are only accessible by the capital. none of the district citizens legally anyway have any type of communication devices to talk to each other between districts it's incredibly difficult to have an uprising when every single town has got a population that has never left the town and honestly doesn't even really know where the other districts are beyond a vague direction. The bow andp the citizens to have anything that they could learn how to use effectively as a weapon because it could be used in an uprising. You can also see the fact that a lot of the weapons that kids outside of the career path were using our weapons that are actually typically tools like axes for shopping would various types of saws thrush was carrying around a scythe because from district 11 he often have to use a side out on fields and plantations, kids from district 4 can also be seen using tridents or nets and other type of aquatic equipment. Very minor little known fact fox face the super intelligent girl is from a district that is known for manufacturing the designer clothes for the capitol, virtually every inch of the space is either nothing but sparse little roach motel apartment towers or warehouses in factories. It's so overly Urban developed that most of the citizens have only ever seen a few blades of grass in their lifetime and none of them ever seen a treat. That's why in the training sessions that girl was so obsessively looking at herbology she knew she wasn't strong enough or she would never have enough time to be able to learn how to effectively be able to weapon so her goal was to potentially use poison but more importantly attempt to lay low until they were far less tributes left to increase. Her odds for victory. Also just like image she knew that she could not go into the cornucopia in the beginning and try to grab bag of food if she wanted to survive, same she knew that she'd never be able to learn how to fish or hunt efficiently in time so she had no reason to go after anything in the cornucopia and she was able to just run which meant if she was going to survive she knew before he was going in she was going to have to make sure she knew as much as humanly possible about what insects that she could or could not eat the same with plants and how would you make potable water. She literally had never seen me foliage and thus she was following Peta and essentially copying anything that Peter was picking up and eating or using for something because she knew that from his district he would have known about a lot of this stuff. In the underwear she was so desperate from starvation that she ate the berries before watching him to make sure they were safe. Aside from arrogance the only other weakness the career pack tributes usually have is the fact that because they've spent their entire lives in a wealthier district going to these training academies where they had to build up their strengths and their skills and their family they obviously by necessity would have had a lot more calories consumed every day and they wouldn't be empty calories they would be vitamins and nutrients dense food to help get their bodies into a basically + 10 million machin.es. as a result I have to go into the games with a lot more Powers stamina and strength however unlike a lot of the poor districts they are not used to going without food so mood swings shaking and other physical symptoms to the malnutrition much faster than they have a much harder time coping with them unlike the other districts that are used to starving.
I think y’all are the first reactors I’ve seen to almost immediately recognize the gesture as a salute. It is in fact a traditional salute to the dead in District 12 carrying many meanings. It was the only way they could show their respect and support for her. They knew she was likely going to her death since nearly all the District 12 tributes had died in the games up to that point, and no one had ever volunteered from that district before.
3:30 You can put your name in extra times to get extra rations, and your name gets put in more the older you get. At 12 your name is in once, once you get to 18 (Gale's age) your name is automatically in 7 time. Gale get extra rations for his family; 3 siblings, his mother, and himself. that's 5 extra rations + the automatic 1 times 7 because he's 18. 42.
Great Reaction!❤ please remember in the sequal that Katniss is still a teenager and focused on survival, not love. Many reactors forget or misunderstand.
Other people can't put your name in. Their names go in once, and people can put his own name in extra times for food or whatever. That's what Gale did.
Their names go in automatically once for every year they’re in it, which *should* skew the reaping in favor of an older kid. 12 year old = 1 chance, 13 year old = 2 chances, 18 year old = 7 chances Obviously this doesn’t include the tesserae, which change the odds significantly
Katniss had done it too. She had to do it less frequently than Gale because she only has herself, Prim and their mom to feed. Gale has multiple younger siblings so he has had to supplement their hunting/trapping efforts
Every time you get food, heat, medicine, water, etc in the district - and you are 12-18, tour name gets another entry. Your family can even add your name more if your family needs food.
Loved this reaction you guys! Appreciate the grace you give to all the characters, even the messy ones haha. One of my favorite parts of this series is how they show the importance of fashion. Fashion/makeup/styling are often overlooked when it comes to their impact and usefulness, but I love how they show how much power it can really carry, especially politically. Never underestimate the power of the drip lol. Rebellion/revolution comes in all forms and it's a message that they make in every one of the movies as well. Can't wait for y'all to see the rest!
“Never underestimate the power of the drip” lmao soooo true!!! But appreciate the love and support! Can’t wait to bring you guys the rest of the series we are loving each movie as we go along.
Gale's name was in 42 times because from the ages of 12-18 he took 6 year's supply of grain and oil for himself, his mother and his siblings. That's how it works, 1 year supply per person = one slip.
Gale and katniss made a deal that if either of them have to go the other would not volunteer but would stay home to feed the other ones family. Because the idea is both would most likely perish if both went and without them and their game, their family would starve. And would also have to put their names in more like katniss and Gale had to do to help feed the family. They don't want their siblings to ever have to put their name in more then they absolutely have to.
This is a comment I've copied and pasted for other reactors, it seems to help! The 'extra food' thing is the Tessera or Tesserae (plural) which is for a years supply of grain and oil for one person, delivered monthly. It's essentially worked out so the poorer districts have no choice but to do it while the wealthy ones don't really have to. The poorer the district; the more tesserae is applied for. Simply because, without the supply of grain and oil (nutrients and warmth) they would very likely die. The children who are Reaping age of 12-18 can put their names in for those rations for EVERY living member of their family (if they wish, or if their parents force them to) per year. Both Gale and Katniss elected to put their names in for the extra resources. And yes, you were right, it is illegal to hunt beyond the boundary lines and illegal to have 'weapons' (her bow and arrow), all of that is geared to force the poorer districts to apply for government 'help'. Say you have yourself, 4 siblings, and both your parents are alive, and a grandparent. By the time you're eighteen your name will be entered 7 times, as it is cumulative per year. However, if you also apply for tesserae for ALL members of your family (8, including yourself) your name is in the bowl 63 times by the time you're eighteen. It's not even really an option for some, because they will simply die of exposure and starvation if they don't sacrifice the chance to be put into the Games. It's basically: "either you can sit back and watch yourself and your family die of starvation/exposure, or you can up the chances being put into the games and murdered for sport to entertain the rich." This class system can force people to keep having children as long as possible so they can keep applying for the tessera once their older children are outside of Reaping age, because only the lives of their 12-18 year old children can be bargained for supplies to avoid certain death. Risk sacrificing one kid to save your family for another year? Most will. It's quite ingenious, and simultaneously absolutely sick.
Every person gets their name in once a year from 12 years old to 18 years old, and it's cumulative. But you can also put your name in more than once each year, in exchange for some extra supplies and food. I may not be remembering exactly correctly, but I believe that for each person in your family, you can throw your name in an extra time. That's how Gayle had his name in so many times. Katniss did the same, except that she had a smaller family, so it wasn't as much as Gayle.
@diamcole Mine are chocolate chip but I use the "Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies" recipe from Tasty. Not their "best" recipe, which is good too. It has to be the "Perfect" ones with browned butter and espresso powder. I've made them dozens of times, and they are always spectacular. It seems like a difficult recipe, but I promise it's easy! I make some adjustments depending on what's in the house, but the original is always the best
@@KatBee00 Lord! You had me sold at "browned butter" lmao and the espresso gives them such a nice kick. I use my great grandmother's recipe which calls for browned butter but only a dash or two of espresso powder. Her trick was swapping vanilla extract for rum and folding in chopped dark chocolate instead of chips. They taste like Fall, oddly enough! I hope you enjoy them, now I'm hungry haha.
Calling out the dude for putting his hand on her bare back, I love it! Most of the capitol residents really do treat the tributes like property existing solely for their entertainment, not like people.
Every citizen of the districts get their name put in once at twelve then twice at thirteen. And so on until they 18 at minimum they all will have 7 at 18. The twist is to pit the better off against the poor within the district. They do that by having you enter your name in more times for yourself and your family members in exchange for a meager ration of grain and oil. So Gail has 5 members of his family 5*7 is 35. 35+7= 42 that’s how Gail has his name entered 42. Katniss has her name entered in 5 + (5*3) = 20 by the time she aged out she would have had her name in 7 + (7*3) = 28 times.
One thing not really clarified in the first movie is that a new arena is built every year with a different setting and terrain that is meant to be just as dangerous as the tributes, but all of them are outfitted with ALL the cameras to broadcast the show. The fact that Katniss was sent into an arena with such a familiar terrain is pure chance and luck.
Plus, Katniss shouldn't even know the woods -- she breaks the law every time she sets foot in the woods to hunt -- so even this arena should be unfamiliar to her.
It’s ironic how the original choice for district 12 were people you wouldn’t have expected. Primrose’s name had only been in there once and Peeta was from a wealthier family to where he wouldn’t have had to put his name in there multiple times to get food like Katniss or Gale did.
I’m pretty sure that district twelve represents the Appalachian area since there’s only 12 districts that we know of and 12 is coal mining and shown as one of the poorer districts so I believe it’s close or is West Virginia and other states near. WV has the poorest county and richest county and specializes in coal mining
fantastic series and loved your reaction! cant wait for the next one. cheers from Canada:) (and not a chance I would've made it out haha- I would've been the idiot making the fire cause I was cold).
just for clarification: -the capitol is the wealthy center of the country, they run the games and do not compete. they run the games to punish the districts for rebelling against the oppressive rule of the capitol and keep the districts living in poverty while they reap all the benefits of the districts' work. for example, district 12 mines coal and district 11 is agriculture/orchards, but they rarely see any of the product they make or produce. even though district 11 works with food, they are left starving just like the other outlying districts. However, capitol favorites like d1 (luxury goods), 2 (masonry) and 4 (fishing) (the careers) live in a little more comfort because of their popularity in the games and their products. overall, its a story largely about a rich, powerful few at the top controlling and oppressing the greater population by keeping them poor and in fear (sound familiar?) -effie is a symbol of the capitol's cognitive dissonance. in the book, she actually initially hates being assigned district 12 because of the poverty. she doesnt understand the reality of it, but rather thinks of them as distasteful and smelly. she cares more about their manners rather than their lives being at stake at this point in the story. she symbolizes how much the capitol has compared to the districts, and it disgusts katniss (like how much food they had in the train alone was more than they had all together in district 12). shes a great character though and grows a lot (shes one of my favs). -the movies made romance/a love triangle a big deal, but in the books, katniss really could not give a shit about that as shes just scrambling to survive. she doesnt have time or energy to commit to worrying about something so small in comparison. -when katniss blew up the supplies, she lost hearing in one of her ears permanently until the capitol restored it after winning. After the games, peeta has to get his leg amputated bc of cato's attack and was on the verge of death immediately after leaving the arena. In the rest of the books, he has a prosthetic leg which was omitted from the movies. -in the book, katniss does indeed see her sister prim in rue. theyre the same age, similar dispositions, and even both named after flowers. sorry for such a long comment, but i thought these would help the movies make more sense with some book context! love the reaction and cant wait for you to see the next movies!
I saw this in a few other comment sections but when Katniss "missed" during her evaluation she was doing the same thing as zeroing a gun, seeing where arrow landed compared to where the sights were pointed
You are right about the ppl who volunteer. There are tributes who make the hunger games their career and just train to kill. If i remember right, apart from the tribute benefitting; their district benefits from winning as well.
It makes sense though, if you can possibly train and win the Games that is a life changing opportunity. So being able to train and be ready to volunteer or if your name is called. And that’s a question we had, we didn’t know if winning the games benefited your district also.
Wow what a fantastic reaction! I really appreciated your insight on the themes within this movie and cannot wait to continue watching along with you. Easy new subscriber here, friends.
Two favourite BTS facts! One was the casting of Thresh (D11) played by Dayo Okeniyi. When they were casting they were intent on using actors that represented the age of the characters as best as possible, and Thresh is described as 6ft and I believe he is 17 or 18, but they struggled to find an actor that was that height and age, so they brought in a second round of possible actors who were slightly older than the previous ones, and Dayo stood out because of his build and height over the others. Thresh is decribed as THE STRONGEST Tribute of that year, both in height and build, and the Careers tried to make an alliance with him because of it. Second is the casting of Clove (D2) played by Isabelle Fuhrman. She was THE novel fan on set, and had read it many times. She adored the books and was adamant she would go out for the film and originally auditioned for Katniss. However Isabelle was (I think) slightly too young by a fraction, and also too short, but equally she was the wrong appearance for Primrose and slightly too old for her role, despite how good she was in auditions. Quickly she was called back in and told to read for the role of 5'4 psychopath Clove. For her audition she didn't read from the script she was given, instead she went directly to the camera and acted out the scene where Clove is taunting Katniss with a knife to her throat, quoting from Clove's book dialogue. Apparently she was so perfect and unnerving when she acted out her part that she was immediately given the role of the "anti-Katniss", aka. Clove.
Yall keep doing whatvyou doing. Yall actually paying attention and picking up on subtle hints and stuff not said to your face and its super refreshing and great to have reactors who do it. Thats how you stay doffre t
Hamish Abernathy is the winner of the 50 Hunger Games, which were special quater quell games that were held every 25th anniversary, in which Hamish had to fight against 47 more tributes and was the winner, since then he has been a mentor of District 12 and for 24 years he has had to watch them die, leading him to deep alcoholism. Also, the Capitol did not agree with the way things happened, so as punishment they decided to kill his family and his girlfriend.
also, that red-head who ate the berries, her name is Fox-face (or that's her nickname at least), in the beginning, when they were training, Fox-face was sorting different forest berries and leafs...including the very berries that she died from eating (nightlock is the berry name). So she knew what those berries were, and she ate them on purpose. so she 'offed-herself' intentionaly.
In the book the boy from District 11 (Thresh, the big man who saved Katniss for Rue) had an epic battle with Cato, the other titan left in the game. I get the film was long enough, but that would have felt much more deserved than being mauled offscreen by bear-szed dog monsters. Also, Foxface (the smart/ fast one) likely ended herself on purpose with the berries in the movie since it was just her and the titans left. She stood no chance in 1 v 1, even with her smarts and stealth, and likely knew there would be a culling tactic by the gamemakers with how long the game had been. Peeta made getting the berries easier, and all she had to do was swipe a handful and dies in seconds before anyone or anything could torture her. The berries kill in seconds as they are described to be so toxic they end you before they even hit your stomach. It was very different in the book, though, so I'm just saying this for the movie.
Also the games that Haymitch (woody harelson) won had 48 tribute and the entire arena was poison the water the plants everything. And he's been watching kids from his district essentially be executed since cuz there hasn't been a Victor from that district between him and the current games.
Hand salute means they are saying goodbye, unity, and admiration it’s also that they don’t agree with what’s happening which is why the three finger salute becomes a big thing with the rebellion.
I absolutely love Rue and how she basically inspires the rest of the action in the trilogy. But nobody admits that Rue gave Katniss the direction to kill like 6 of the best people in the game. She is always portrayed as this innocence, but it's more like she was innocent and then quickly realized what she had to do. She says while dying "you have to win" - she isn't just talking about winning that one game. Katniss hears that and rebels.
First of all, don't u ever in the rest of yall lives, call my man Petta, a bitch. 😅He is big brain. From the very beginning,,Petta was playing chess when everybody else was playing checkers. His strongest weapons, which Katniss starts to realize and u will too if u really pay attention throughout all the movies, is not really his physical strength but his ways with words when he speaks, his likeable personality that win people over, and how he thinks. He joined up with that group to protect Katniss not to kill her. By joining the people who he knew was aimming for Katniss he could position himself to mess up their plans or figure out a way to protect her. The example was how he got them to just leave her in the tree; giving her time to figure a way to excape. Peeta is ALWAYS protecting the woman he loves even if it means sacrificing himself. They didn't show it in the movie but when u him telling her to go after the trackerjackers. That was real. He was returning from the lake after running from the insects. He knew Kato was also coming back from the lake. He held off Kato giving Katniss time to escape. Hence how Kato cut him on the leg with his sword.. Pay attention to Petta showing Katniss where to shoot Kato so that he could throw him down.
On Effie, and this is mainly my assessment from the books and films, is that her character is so high strung because she is at the bottom rung and looked down on within her circle. Having to be the escort of D12 she's the outlier in the wealthy parts of the Capitol NOT because of her wealth, but her placement. She needs to work her way up, but hasn't been able to no matter how hard she tries - she knows D12 will never win so she can't achieve recognition that way, so she goes completely in on appearance and behaviour. I think that's part of her obsession with being perfect and polished and positive, so her work can be recognised like the others who have been designated nicer Districts to represent. Equally, and you'll learn some more about the way the Capitol is as the trilogy expands, she is very aware of what kind of punishments are inflicted and how petty the systems can be. She's likely fearing that she, as the escort and representative of D12's Tributes, will also be punished in some way if they act out, fail, make waves, etc. Even if it's not her fault, the Capitol likes to make examples of peole, and she knows that because she's around those who have been punished. Not a spoiler, it's mentioned in the next movie in a little detail but explained in the first book, but the silent servants (mostly women here, but there are also men) you see around are called Avoxes, their tongues have been removed for [whatever crime] and they are essentially slaves within the Capitol. Also, I'm so grateful they expanded on Effie in the movies and we see more of her character play out on the screen, because she wasn't initially envisioned as big a part in the movie from what I know. We can thank Elizaeth Banks' acting for that!
Some things I haven’t seen anyone mention yet. When Katniss’s dad died, her mom pretty much went catatonic and couldn’t take care of Katniss and Prim so Katniss stepped up as a provider and that’s why when she was talking to her mom before the games she said she can’t shut down again, because god forbid something happened to Katniss, Prim would need her mother. Also, when Katniss and Peeta were on top of the cornucopia with Cato, when Cato had Peeta in a chokehold, Peeta was pointing to/tapping Cato’s hand to tell Katniss to shoot him in the hand so that Peeta could then push him off the cornucopia after Cato lets him go. Also, when the writer was trying to publish the books, originally Gale was Katniss’s cousin and Peeta was the love interest but no one wanted to publish it because there wasn’t the conflict of love and therefore she made Gale Katniss’s best friend and potential love interest in order to sell the books and that’s why when you’re watching it Gale just kinda feels out of place while watching the games and the jealousy imo is weird considering the original plot line.
I think the movies downplay how amazing Peeta is because they were playing off the hype Twilight got for its love triangle, and they really needed to push Peeta vs. Gale. In the books, Peeta is way more capable than he's made out to be here, and Gale is not as "great" as he is in the movies (though I never liked him even when I was a movie-only fan of the Hunger Games)
Yeah I agree, with peeta like not only did they take away his strengths and even added in things that weren’t in the book at all to make him seem weaker (him struggling at training and getting laughed at and Katniss having to tell his to show his strength) which never happened since he didn’t struggle in the first place and excelled at hand to hand combat in training. They also took away like 80% of his personality. Which sucks, because his wit and charm is a big part of his character and how he can get audiences around his finger. He seems very quiet and introverted in comparison here. Like that’s a different person, it’s like the movies keep having to tell us peeta is more likeable but they don’t show us it.
Removing trackers while in this arena wouldn’t do any good. There are cameras literally everywhere and all arenas are contained somehow either with geographical features or force fields, so escape is impossible. The capitol has insane surveillance and control.
In the books, Cinna is Katniss's personnal stylist, and Portia is Peeta's personnal stylist. Cinna and Portia work together to make them similar outfits. That's why Cinna is there when Katniss enters the arena. Peeta is not left alone, he's with his stylist.
Also in he books, Peeta is loved by the crowd just like Katniss. They shout his name along with hers. The movies are more focused on Katniss obviously becausz there is less time to show everything and she's the main character.
Y'all - "I ain't never watched none of these jawns" Me - either I've accidentally found fellow Philadelphians (as far as tri state maybe) or the lingo has gone worldwide. Hi there, neighbors (most likely)!
So excited to see you guys react to this 💙 One of my absolute favorite book series, and the movies are great too. Way more thought provoking than the marketing suggests.
Your reaction made me subscribe! Hunger Games movies really be THAT movie to me, I just keep on rewatching the movies cause they be that good. This time tho, it's nice to watch a Hunger Games reaction while "watching" the movie. Thank you for this!
Gale has his name in so many times for a reason. Once your name goes in, it stays in. Each year they add it again. So the second year you have 2, third 3, ect. You can request a year's worth of food for 1 person at the cost of another entry. Each year Gale sacrifices multiple entries and gets everyone in his family a years ration except for himself.
Including himself 7 + (7*5) = 42 Gail’s family Hazelle (mom), Gail, Rory, Vick, Posy. = 5 And his dad that died in a mine explosion along with Katniss’s dad.
Looooove this movie! SO happy y'all are watching these series too! No matter what you guys watch I feel like everything is so genuine and realness. I dead ass look forward to your videos cus they cheer me up. Thank you
We appreciate you Sarah! This was a great firs movie & we've enjoyed the next two we watched! We will ALWAYS be real w/ what we do & bring that content to you all. Much love & happy we could cheer you up💙
Books are pretty great especially the audiobooks. The audiobooks have been rereleased with a different reader. And a new book is going to be released in 2025.
If yall ever get the chance. Please read the books. The movies aren’t bad in fact the movies are just as good. But the books are richer if that makes sense.
So each child gets their name put in once a year but you can put your name in multiple times in exchange for food. So they pretty much set the system up so that the poorest of the district are the ones most likely to be chosen.
💔 Our sweet precious Rue Makes Mamaw from Arkansas cry every time I watch it 😭 Peeta is a lot like Rue was A gentle Soul 😢👍 Team Peeta ❤ Can’t hardly wait for y’all’s reactions to the rest of em ♥️
The Reaping is an annual tradition in Panem, where two children from each district are chosen for the Hunger Games. The number of times a child's name is entered in the Reaping increases by one each year from ages 12 to 18, making survival a cruel cycle. Also, you can get more food or heating oil in exchange for adding your name extra times.
Not sure if someone already said this but I’m the book, the dogs at the end were actually mutated with the other dead victors. I can see why they didn’t put in the movie but man, that would’ve been wild to see
One thing that hardly gets mentioned. They keep referring to the Tributes as Men and Women instead of the children they actually are. It is a real world tactic in the news and authorities to describe children. It allows us to place blame on them and remove the compassion/care we as social animals naturally feel for our young. Subtle tactic but shown to be incredibly effective.
That’s very true & something we tried to stay mindful of & kept mentioning throughout the reaction!
I thought the same thing
"i dont know if you can top this right here," before watching Catching Fire is a bold statement
We found out🤣
@@DaKidsReact thank god you replied to me bc I forgot about this 😭
Please remember as you watch all the films that Katniss is just a girl (16 or 17 years old) keeping her family alive.
Well said. I think closer to 16 than 17.
@@shirleydurr411she’s 17 in mockingjay

Awwww poor rue.She so brave and lovely girl 😭😭
Appreciate the love!! We try our best to do the films we watch justice by catching as much as we can while being entertaining! Happy you enjoyed 😊
Peeta lost his leg as a result of his injuries in the games, but that is left out of the movies. Being an amputee has an impact on his abilities and how people view him later on. Just something to remember if you see him struggling or people worrying about him!
Another comment says they have just finished Catching Fire. 🤗
Katniss lived in a state of survival mode. She didn't have time for a boyfriend or having feelings. She was not romantically involved with anyone.
I am so excited to read his story next year when his book comes out!
Peeta “I just don’t want the games to change me” Mellark 😭😭😭
stopppp 😭💔💔💔💔
Katniss was never WITH Gale. He likes her but for her, he is her best friend.
Well..aside from Madge. 🥲
If they ever do a remake in the future they gotta include Katniss's only other friend before Peeta came along. 💀
A detail from the book that was left out of the film is about the mutant dogs at the end. In the book, they have the faces of the fallen tributes. They thought it would make them too disturbing, and they were probably right.
WHAT😰 that’s actually crazy to think about
Yeah seeing a mutant dog with eyes exactly like Rue and fur the same color as her hair really fucked with Katniss’ head
@@DaKidsReact the Rue dog was one of the reasons why katniss didnt shoot Cato immediately, becuase she was too distraught and disturbed
Not their faces, their eyes..with collars with their district number.
1:00:17 Catching Fire be like… ‘Hold my arena.’ 😂
25:06 “it makes her relatable”. Exactly. It’s harder to kill someone when you know them.
It’s also used to sow division between the slightly better off than the poor.
It’s easier to pick at your neighbors than to fight the system.
It isn’t shown in the movies, but in the books the people of District 11 send Katniss a loaf of bread for how she treated Rue.
From the book which is written from Katniss’ point of view:
I’m about to haul my packs into a tree to make camp when a silver parachute floats down and lands in front of me.
These books were so good, I haven’t read them since the movies were releasing. It may be time to revisit for me, I totally forgot this happened.

Rue is almost a catalyst for all to come. She's Primrose, if Prim had gone to the games. This series is great.
I've said this in the past, but it's always true: Donald Sutherland makes a really good villain as President Snow. It's kind of the same paradox with Imelda Staunton/Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter: a delightful actor playing such a vile, despicable character.

23:01 No, Haymitch was saying that Peeta had requested to have their trainings separately. He was explaining to her that at that point in the process, a lot of tributes make the same request since there can only be one winner of the Hunger Games - despite there being a male and female picked from each district.
Appreciate you clearing that up!

@@DaKidsReactoh and yes! The district gets money when someone from their district wins. So them winning helps everyone at home, too.
Yeah it makes so much sense why he’s in so much pain and copes the way he does
“ That’s W dying rizz” ☠️☠️

Yeah as I recall tributes were allowed to keep a district token as long as it wasn’t a weapon
I'm so happy yall didn't know Prim was chosen- yall were both
:O :O
Appreciate the love!! Happy you enjoyed the reaction ❤
Other people can't put your name in. Their names go in once, and people can put his own name in extra times for food or whatever. That's what Gale did.
Their names go in automatically once for every year they’re in it, which *should* skew the reaping in favor of an older kid. 12 year old = 1 chance, 13 year old = 2 chances, 18 year old = 7 chances
Obviously this doesn’t include the tesserae, which change the odds significantly
CRAZY to even think about that.
Yes, they both survived. But now President Snow is PISSED. Wait till part 2.
I would not be a reader if it weren't for these books. I hope you guys watch them all!
I can admit id be the FIRST to get taken out 😂
🤣🤣 somebody has to be
You will love all the other movies ❤❤ love your reactions guys
Finished 2 so far, watching mockingjay tomorrow🔥 We truly appreciate you & your support💙
Gale's name was in 42 times because from the ages of 12-18 he took 6 year's supply of grain and oil for himself, his mother and his siblings. That's how it works, 1 year supply per person = one slip.
I'm glad you guys picked up on hamitch's trauma and didn't judge him right away, he had a ROUGH hunger games and it ruined him for life.
We try our best to think outside the box when it comes to characters to try to fully understand them! That would mess anybody up😢
Gale and katniss made a deal that if either of them have to go the other would not volunteer but would stay home to feed the other ones family.
It's basically: "either you can sit back and watch yourself and your family die of starvation/exposure, or you can up the chances being put into the games and murdered for sport to entertain the rich."
This class system can force people to keep having children as long as possible so they can keep applying for the tessera once their older children are outside of Reaping age, because only the lives of their 12-18 year old children can be bargained for supplies to avoid certain death.
Plus Gayle is older, so that also affected the Katniss to Gayle slip ratio
I'm so stoked! Just baked some cookies, so I'm settling in for a great reaction as my reward. Thank you! Old Musician From Seattle
I also just finished baking cookies! Doing the same 😊
What kind of cookies?!
We hope you enjoy the reaction w/ the cookies🔥💙
I haven’t seen anyone in the comments mention this yet but they gave her a score of 11 to get the other tributes to target her !
We appreciate you & we are happy you enjoyed it! That fire scene was sad to see🤣😢
just for clarification:
-the capitol is the wealthy center of the country, they run the games and do not compete. they run the games to punish the districts for rebelling against the oppressive rule of the capitol and keep the districts living in poverty while they reap all the benefits of the districts' work. for example, district 12 mines coal and district 11 is agriculture/orchards, but they rarely see any of the product they make or produce. even though district 11 works with food, they are left starving just like the other outlying districts. However, capitol favorites like d1 (luxury goods), 2 (masonry) and 4 (fishing) (the careers) live in a little more comfort because of their popularity in the games and their products. overall, its a story largely about a rich, powerful few at the top controlling and oppressing the greater population by keeping them poor and in fear (sound familiar?)
-effie is a symbol of the capitol's cognitive dissonance. in the book, she actually initially hates being assigned district 12 because of the poverty. she doesnt understand the reality of it, but rather thinks of them as distasteful and smelly. she cares more about their manners rather than their lives being at stake at this point in the story. she symbolizes how much the capitol has compared to the districts, and it disgusts katniss (like how much food they had in the train alone was more than they had all together in district 12). shes a great character though and grows a lot (shes one of my favs).
Her equipment is all homemade by her father and herself. So it’s going to feel very different than the machine made equipment in the Capital.
The 😮 when they said prim 😂😂😂😂😂
Not little sis Prim😰
Wow what a fantastic reaction! I really appreciated your insight on the themes within this movie and cannot wait to continue watching along with you. Easy new subscriber here, friends.
Appreciate the love and support!! The Hungers Games is an amazing series, hope you enjoy the rest with us!
@@jamesverone1244 appreciate the love and support it means a lot!!!
There’s a new book coming out next year about his game.
also, that red-head who ate the berries, her name is Fox-face (or that's her nickname at least), in the beginning, when they were training, Fox-face was sorting different forest berries and leafs...including the very berries that she died from eating (nightlock is the berry name).
“I’m bouta do you tomorrow” 😂 had me dead
🤣🤣
Also the games that Haymitch (woody harelson) won had 48 tribute and the entire arena was poison the water the plants everything. And he's been watching kids from his district essentially be executed since cuz there hasn't been a Victor from that district between him and the current games.
Just here so the algorithm recommends me the Catching Fire video
Me too
Hand salute means they are saying goodbye, unity, and admiration it’s also that they don’t agree with what’s happening which is why the three finger salute becomes a big thing with the rebellion.
“that’s you?!” outta pocket asf for that bru😭😭
🤣🤣🤣 killed em w/ that one
Wow, this is a nice Sunday surprise 😊
I absolutely love Rue and how she basically inspires the rest of the action in the trilogy. But nobody admits that Rue gave Katniss the direction to kill like 6 of the best people in the game. She is always portrayed as this innocence, but it's more like she was innocent and then quickly realized what she had to do. She says while dying "you have to win" - she isn't just talking about winning that one game. Katniss hears that and rebels.
rue hit EVERYBODY's heart
Just randomly stumbled upon your review. I hope you guys continue the series. As crazy as this movie is, it's just the beginning. Enjoy
Definitely will continue the series! First two movies were a blast to watch!
This movies gets only better from here ❤ I hope to see you react to the rest of them 😊
Definitely did! Catching fire dropping around 3-4pm est🔥
I did wish they didn’t exclude the preps from the movie.
They add so much perspective into the Capital.
Rues death in the book hit extra hard. I remember tearing up in 7th grade english and my homies started clowning my ass lmaooo
6:37 love how receptive y’all are already
I always felt bad how peeta didn’t get cheered for but sinna was obsessed with katniss
Y'all - "I ain't never watched none of these jawns"

So excited to see you guys react to this 💙 One of my absolute favorite book series, and the movies are great too. Way more thought provoking than the marketing suggests.

Your reaction made me subscribe! Hunger Games movies really be THAT movie to me, I just keep on rewatching the movies cause they be that good. This time tho, it's nice to watch a Hunger Games reaction while "watching" the movie. Thank you for this!
@@jessicatz appreciate the love and we are happy you enjoyed your time over here!!
Including himself 7 + (7*5) = 42
Gail’s family Hazelle (mom), Gail, Rory, Vick, Posy. = 5
And his dad that died in a mine explosion along with Katniss’s dad.
"you aint watch those videos of the indian people making cribs, I DID!"💀💀

I’ve been seeing a resurgence of the hunger games reactions I firmly believe this is the best movie series there is
Books are pretty great especially the audiobooks.
The audiobooks have been rereleased with a different reader.
And a new book is going to be released in 2025.
21:47 lmao shout out to our girl katnisssss
The districts do get stuff if a tribute from their district wins. They get food supplies I believe.

RIP Rue!!!
I can see why they didn’t put in the movie but man, that would’ve been wild to see
The hallucination part 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
