Yes Haymitch is messed up. He won his own games. Then he lost his mother, brother and girlfriend because the Capitol was not happy with him. Then, because he's the only victor from district 12 alive, he had to mentor 2 kids for 24 years, so he had to watched 48 kids from his district get killed. It's understandable why he would be drunk all the time.

46 actually and then he was part of the 50th which had double the tributes in the games. Tbh, I’d probably have died long ago from either alcohol poison or doing something that got me killed. Having to see all the people in the capital year after year would make me sick.

@@alvahv47 if you count the district 12 individual from his games. Unless you remember how young Haymitch was when he won his games his entire formative part of his adolescence and early adulthood was him being a spectacle and having to watch a bunch of people from his home die. Imagine being in your teens and winning the games and then having to spend the rest of your life watching people from your district die and having to facilitate them being led to their deaths... I'd be drunk all the time too

The thing with Cato, yes he was cruel and violent but he's just a product of the capital. A piece in their games. He and people from his district are brainwashed. If you think back to Gladiators, most were slaves who were trained to become and believe they were heroes/champions. As long as they played the game they could convince themselves they were warriors and not slaves. In the end, Cato's speech is him realising that he wasn't the warrior hero the capitol made him believe he was, but instead, just a pawn to be used however they want. And in that, you can feel a level of sympathy for him despite what he did in the games.

    • @davidfairweather3301

To be fair though that speech was only in the movie. In the book he was still convinced he could win. He was banking on Katniss not shooting and was gonna use Peeta as a shield to push them both off. It was cool though to see the movie humanise him a bit more

@davidfairweather3301 It's clear Cato is not a good guy but the movies gave him more depth than the books which is much better. Even that last scene on the Cornucopia is a lot duller in the books, so I'm glad they made both changes to that scene and Cato at the end.

@@rim_on7362 your logic is off. Cato didn’t have the speech in the book. Katniss was there. The movie changed this detail. Other things like seeing Snow and Seneca interact could be considered canon cos it doesn’t contradict the source material.

Book Katniss didn’t have that thought at all. She didn’t want them to have a winner if they were going to keep changing the rules on them. This was the way for them to go out and show the capital that they were still them, as Peeta wanted from his little speech.

38:19 yes he got stung, when Katniss found him camouflaged, Peeta had multiple injuries. He was stung 4 times, he had burns from the fire, and he had the bad cut to his leg from Cato's sword. Katniss could see the bone, she had to drain all the pus from it. It was disgusting. Then he had blood poisoning from the infection. Then the dog mutt bit the same leg. In the book, Cato survived all night. Katniss was forced to use her last arrow to do a tourniquet on Peeta's leg so he wouldn't die from blood lost. He did almost die, his heart stopped multiple times when they tried to save him after they won. Katniss was going insane, they had to sedate her. In the end, they were forced to amputate his lower leg, so in the following book, he has a prosthetic leg.

So short about Haymitch backstory is that he won in a way that the president didn't like so he had Haymitch whole family and girlfriend killed because of it which is the reason for Haymitch telling Katniss that the don't take these things lightely and that it's serious, not just for her. Also Cato (the last of the careers) telling them that he is dead anyway is when he realized how rigged the games actually are and that it's not much about your skills as he thought before, especially after the rule change that there could be two victors is where he thought that katniss and Peeta where favored to win. He had been raised his whole life just for the purpose of what he thought was bringning glory to his district but in the endis where he realized that he was nothing but a pawn for the capital. Which is why he didn't think it mattered if he killed Peeta or not because the gamemakers had already decided one of Katniss or Peeta should win, but he was just to far gone to try to be anything else but a cold blooded killer who he's been raised to be all his life.

It was implied that the trained kids were acting sadistic, in part, to get sponsors interested in them as well. also, I'm mad that the movie doesn't show Cato absolutely losing his mind with grief when his district partner dies.
Also knife girl was being sadistic to Katniss because she was pissed about the blonde girl's death. It was revenge basically.
I love the movies but they really missed out on humanizing the other children in these games. The books make it very clear that the other kids aren't the enemy, the capital is.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember Cato "losing his mind with grief" at any point in the book. I don't understand why he would, he knew that Clove would have to die in order for him to win, and he wanted to win, it was never stated that he was going to sacrifice himself for her, the career tributes go there to win, and maybe they have a backstory that we're unaware of, but it's never stated or implied in the book. And, Clove didn't even know Glimmer, they made an alliance to kill more people knowing that in the end they would have to kill eachother in order to win, so why exactly would she be so upset over her death? We never see them bonding and it's never stated or even implied in the book that she's upset over Glimmer's death.

I am reading the book and its interesting to note the things that are different and the same. Their land was North America and the Capital was in the Rockies and District 12 in Appalachia. Also, the pin came from the Mayor's daughter a friend of Katniss.

    • @thomasnieswandt8805
      @thomasnieswandt8805 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

To me, this is the most outrageous change of the movie. The whole first book is about Katniss wearing the pin openly.
You read the books, so you know, but to everyone who doesnt. The Pin is given to Katniss, by Madge Undersees, the Mayors daughter. (btw Katniss only friend in District 12) The Pin belonged to Madges aunt, Maysilee Donner. Maysilee was reaped at age 16, in the 50th games, the year Haymitch won. (She was killed by Paradise-birds stabbing her neck) She had the pin as a token from her district. It was later given to her sister, Madges mom, whom since that day lived a life of pain and depression. In book 2 you learn that Maysilee was also the best friend of Katniss mom.
It also makes no sense, that the pin is given in secret to her, because it creates a big plothole. they know the weight of a tribute and all get the same chlothing, so the gamemakers know everyones weight to the 1000s of a gramm. A secret pin would have killed Katniss on the spot. One year, a girl lost her token while standing on the platform. That 1gramm was enough to blow her up before the games started.

Katniss' feelings for Peeta are a lot more nuanced than it being either completely head over heals in love OR it all being an act. It's clearer in the book that she did develop genuine feelings for him, but she had to ham it up to be perceived as being at the same level as Peeta. Katniss is in too deep in survival mode to completely accept her feelings for him, so she suppresses them. But there were moments that you seemed to pick up on when she was being genuine in showcasing her budding love for him. And regarding Gale, Katniss is unaware of his feelings for her at this point. Those looks of pain are just him being possessive over her, even though he never once brought up the topic of dating before she entered the games and has a known reputation of sleeping around with multiple girls around the district.

    • @jacobbraun1243
      @jacobbraun1243 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

@@user-jw2kl9ij8k it’s never mentioned in the movies, which is why I felt it was a safe, non-spoilery detail to include for strictly film reactors. But in the Mockingjay book, Gale himself tells Katniss that he would fool around with girls in secret places and Katniss noted an overlap between these instances and the time he supposedly started developing a crush on her (which he also tells her about in Mockingjay).
This also calls back to the very first chapter of the Hunger Games, when Katniss tells us that while there’s nothing romantic between him and her, she often heard other girls whispering about him. While Gale isn’t explicit about what exactly “fooling around” constituted, even if it was just make out sessions, it’s quite hypocritical of him to get upset about her kissing Peeta for her survival - in addition to him never sharing his feelings until AFTER she formed a connection with someone else and therefore not having the right to feel betrayed in the first place.

“One more time? For the audience?" he says. His voice isn't angry. It's hollow, which is worse. Already the boy with the bread is slipping away from me.

The mutts (or muttations) were originally used to fight the rebels before the Hunger Games came to be. The dogs in the finale of the games were much scarier in the books. They had collars that had the districts on them and their fur resembled the dead tributes. They also had human like eyes the same color as the corresponding tributes who had died so Katniss was sure they had been taken from their bodies. She was so so terrified of them.
The mockingjay that Katniss had on her pin is such a good symbol because originally the capitol created Jabber Jays which could record whole conversations between rebels and report them back to the capitol. However they mated with mocking birds and created Mockingjays which can pick up tunes and songs and play them back so accurately. They were something the capitol never planned for just like her. But the movies definitely weren’t toned down a lot. Just cussing and blood shown to a minimum to stay away from the R rating. The deaths pretty much remained the same and some exposition left out for the runtime.

Context for the bread scene because they butchered it in the movie :
This happened after Katniss's dad died. Katniss and Peeta were 11 years old. Katniss's mom was in a depression and wasn't able to take care of her 2 daughters. Katniss was a few month from turning 12yo so she couln't take tessarae yet (when they get food in exchange for putting their name more time for the hunger games).
So, the scene occurs when Katniss (and her mother and Prim) were starving. Katniss was searching the trash from the merchant area to try to find food. She was near the bakery, Peeta's mom saw her and screamed at her and threatened her so she would leave. Katniss was desperate and she basically gave up and sat there in the rain awaiting death. Peeta saw her and he burned 2 loaves of bread on purpose. Just a little bit so they couldnt sell them. It was the expensive kind of bread, that even Peeta's family couln't afford. Peeta knew he would be punished for it. His mother hit him with something and screamed at him, calling him "stupid creature". Then Peeta tossed the bread to Katniss when he mother wasn't looking. He couldn't just go outside and give it to her, his mother would not have let him.
The bread saved Katniss's life as well as her mother's and Prim's. It gave them food for several days. The next day, Katniss saw Peeta at school. He had a black eye and a bruised cheek. She wanted to thank him but didn't know how. Instead, she looked down and picked up a dandelion. It reminded her what her father taught her about the woods and plants and hunting. It gave her the courage to go into the woods by herself. It gave her the hope that they would be able to survive, at least until she turned 12 and got the tesserae. To this day, she associates Peeta with hope. He is "the boy with the bread" or "the dandelion in the spring" to her.
When he is reaped, the first thing she is thinking is "no, not him" and "the odds are definitely not in my favor".

I can't figure out WHY they butchered that scene so badly that most movie-only people have no idea what actually happened. Did they think only book readers would watch it? I get that it's hard to do flashbacks on film without it feeling odd because film is linear, but there had to be a better way. Even a prologue scene with them as kids (doing it when they were clearly old enough for tesserae was a mistake; half the reason the Everdeens were starving was that the mother was suffering from major depression and Katniss wasn't old enough to take tesserae or work.

    • @dresden123456

I never understood why they did that scene the way they did. They both look exactly the same (I'd even go as far as they look older than in the rest of the film) and it makes zero sense. A lot of movies-only people figure out that he gave her food but the gravity of that action is mostly lost on them. And who can blame them! Without the context it just looks like teen Katniss sits in the rain looking sad. It annoys me so much. It's probably the most important moment for Katniss' evolution as a character. Everything revolves around that. It says so much about the type of people they are and it adds so much depth to Peeta as well. I like Josh, I think he did the best he could, but the movies really didn't do Peeta justice.
Honestly, it's one short scene. How difficult would it be to get 2 kid actors to do it? 1 blond boy, 1 dark haired girl, you CGI her to look emaciated and tada, done. They're not even speaking roles. You get it all filmed in one day. I like the movies (especially CF) but I will never forgive them for butchering the most important scene...

@@dresden123456 i agree they should have hired kids. Also, I hate that they diminished Peeta's abuse by his mother. That's such a big part of who he is, why he is so selfless, why he has such a low sense of self-worth, why he's so good with words and would rather use words instead of strength (whereas he has the strength). But, I still adore Josh's portrayal of Peeta. Especially in the following movies (under Francis Lawrence directing).

But she would not be the chosen one either way, since she chose herself because of her sister. I think the theory could make sense under the aspect that the game makers don't wanna leave anything up for chance and they probably want a diverse cast for their show. If only 24 kids are chosen every year, the chance is high that you might get a game where most kids are 15-17 year olds or almost all are little. Maybe the game makers wanna make sure the chosen kids are diverse or they even wanna get rid of certain kids to punish someone.

I didn't mean the kind of diversity that you are probably talking about. Thing is, if the chance of getting chosen is higher when you exchange food for putting your name in, why were there so many young kids in there? According to probability, there is a very slim chance of a young child getting chosen, especially in poorer districts. And in rich districts older kids volunteer anyway. So basically every year you will mostly have a bunch of 15-17 year olds beating each other's head in if you don't preselect a few young kids.
