I hate how they downplayed the bread scene (and Peeta's characters in general) because it's quite important for Katniss. Her father had just died and her mother was deep in depression. She also wasn't of age yet to put her name in the games and be able to ask for more food, so they were literally dying of hunger. Peeta's mom is actually terrible and treats him badly. However, when he sees Katniss in the rain, he burns a very expensive bread that only peacemakers and people like that can buy just to be able to give it to her. For that, he got a beating and he went to school the next day all bruised up. That bread literally saved Katniss and her family and she got inspired to start hunting. From that day on, Peeta was for her like a symbol of hope.
Peeta was being real when he said he liked Katniss, but he indeed was also playing the star-crossed lovers card. He's charming, good with people and managing social situations. In the books Katniss has her moments and is resourceful, ofc, but it's evident that Peeta and his charming ways are key to her success.
You are one of the few that picked on the spot that Peeta wasn't really helping the professionals, and that made me so glad. The book is narrated from Katniss' POV and she thinks he is working with them. However, when she rewatches the games later, she discovers he wasnt. He wasnt even doing it for himself. He was activelly getting them away from her (like he recognized her traps, and pointed the professionals the other way). He says to "kill her later" to give her some time and spends the night next to the tree trunk to make sure she's fine and when he tells her to run is because Cato is still around, looking for her. He even goes against Cato so she can escape. That's how he gets that cut.
From the begining, he was trying to make Katniss win 🥺🥺

Haymitch is resentful because he had to endure the hunger games himself. The only way you win is by being the lone survivor out of a group of kids- that has to come with some PTSD and survivor's guilt, let alone the guilt for any actions you took. Then on top of that, he has to mentor following district 12 tributes that don't have a high success rate because of the careers (the ones that train for this)- so he has had to watch the system lead these kids to their death and is forced to play a part in it for the rest of his life. You aren't free once you survive the games- you become a pawn for the capital to use and if you don't comply they threaten everyone you care about. Another character you meet later in the series has a heartbreaking story about how the capital used him after he won.
Effie is from the capital, so while she is there for it, she is more removed from the reality of it and more or less brainwashed by the capital's propaganda.

    • @RammerHammer
      @RammerHammer หลายเดือนก่อน +29

Not to mention that Haymitch's entire family was slaughtered by the Capitol because they saw his actions in the game and him winning as an act of rebellion. He's been battered and traumatized by the system so badly, it's no wonder he's an alcoholic.

In the books, it's stated that Katniss's first shot in her demonstration went off center because she was used to using an old, warped wooden bow and handmade arrows, and had to account for the unreliability of her shoddy weaponry, meaning that when she was using the fancy metal bow and arrows she wasnt used to how accurate they were and had to readjust. It's something that really doesn't matter in the long term, but is one of those very tiny details that is lost because the movies aren't told from Katniss's perspective and thus we don't get her internal monologue to help explain a lot of the minutiae.

Btw, the 3 finger salute is a sign of respect in district 12.
The Capitol expected Katniss to kill Peeta at the end, for more drama I guess (I read the books many years ago) but she really was ready to die at the end with the berries, rather than let the Capitol win by forcing her to kill her partner.
The berries in the bowl at the end were for the guy with the crazy beard (Seneca Crane, the game maker). He allowed Katniss to show them all up by defying the rules…. So he was basically made to eat the berries to die for his actions.

My biggest pet peeve with the movie series adaption is how Peeta is portrayed. Not bad, necessarily. Just didn’t present him fully. Yes, he is charismatic, but he is also socially intelligent. He was a big part of of getting Haymitch to engage so much with them, he is liked by everyone, pin points people’s goals and intentions quickly, etc. he is a natural public speaker. He is also incredibly strong, both physically and mentally. In the books, Peeta actually loses his leg that was cut so bad in this movie - a cut he got from Cato. But he still goes about life kindly and normally. He did throw the bread to her when she was on the brink of starvation. The book makes it clear he burned it on purpose so that he would be able to give it to her… and took a beating from his physically ab*side mom for it. He is truly selfless when it comes to Katniss.
Subscribed for your reactions to the rest of the series. Believe me - there is plenty of material. The scope of this world simply gets bigger and more detailed. Catching Fire is my favorite of all the movies.

    • @chanbang378

Yeah I agree, it’s getting better now but the movies are the reason that people used to see peeta as ‘weak and useless’ for years and it sucks because he’s not.
Like you said, it just doesn’t present him fully. I feel like the movies, especially the first one not only took away a lot of his strengths but also like 80% of his personality it just… gone.

Katniss missed her first shot in front of the judges because she had been deliberately told by Haymitch not to reveal her talents with a bow to the other tributes, to give her an advantage. When she shoots that bow in front of the game makers, that is the first time she has ever shot with that bow. It is different than the bow she has at home, and has to be adjusted to to accommodate for that difference. Her first shot missed, but her second shot was spot on. It took her one practice shot to learn to shoot perfectly with a bow she has never used. This speaks to incredible talent, but the game makers just saw her miss and wrote her off.

One thing that seems to get lost from the books is katniss’ complete lack of interest in having a relationship with a boy. She has focus solely on providing for her family since she was 11 yo. She is completely in survivor mode. Gale is her hunting partner and good friend. To her that’s it. In the book, she comments on all the girls at school that are interested in Gale. Her only concern is about the possibility of losing her hunting partner. Gale’s father died in the same mining accident katniss’ father died in and they met in the woods while hunting for their families. So many people focus on the Love Triangle. From katniss’ perspective there is no triangle.

Regarding why Gale has his name in 42 times: your name is in once for each year you are eligible. One entry at 12, 2 at 13, etc. But if you are starving you can put your name in extra times in order to get food rations (they are called "tesserae" in this universe). Those entries are also multipled by the age of the child. Gale, for example, is 18 here. The oldest age eligible and he has put his name in several times for his mother and three siblings to get food rations. Katniss, likewise, put her name in to get rations for her mother and Prim. This system ensures that the poorest and least powerful families are generally the ones who are picked. But not always, as seen with Prim.
The bowl of berries at the end was put there at President Snow (Donald Sutherland, RIP)'s behest. The Gamemaker (Crane) is locked in with the poison. Crane is looking at the Games like an entertainment event. He ordered Katniss and Peeta not to be killed to keep the audience happy. Snow uses it as a political tool, to crush desent. He is... unhappy with this outcome. It is the only time two people survived the Games.
When they changed the rules back, they expected Katniss and Peeta to kill each other. They thought it would be a dramatic finale. I expect Snow did not believe Katniss's "love" and thought she would turn on him. Though we only get Katniss' POV in the books.

There’s so much subtext in this movie that is fleshed out in the books. The biggest one is the Avoxes (you see one in the background of the dinner scene before the Games. She’s wearing a funky cage thing on her face). When someone goes against the Capitol in some way, they get their tongue removed and are made to be servants.
Also, in District 12, there are two different neighborhoods of sorts: the Merchants and the Seam. The Merchants are more fair complected and run shops and are a bit more well off. This is where Katniss’ mom is originally from as well as where Peeta is from. The Seam is where Katniss is from. They are significantly poorer. No running water, no electricity, barely have food. Katniss sells her wares on the black market to survive.
    Hope this helps!

Katniss's mother is still reeling from her husband being killed in a mining accident. Which is why she sort of shut down, and Katniss had to take over being the head of the family. And Haymitch is a mess because he's the only winner District 12 has produced. So every year since he won he's had to mentor two teenagers from his District, and get to know them, and watch them die. Year after year.

    Things that are in The Hunger Game book but were never mentioned in the movie;
Each district specializes in certain vocations. For example, District 12, where Katniss comes from, is a mining district. Her father died in a mining accent and as a result her mother goes into a severe massive clinical depression where she no longer could take care of her daughters and herself. That is why Katniss was starving and Peeta threw the bread to her.
When a person wins the Hunger Games that person not only wins a lot of money but they win a huge expensive house (located in the Victor's village in their district) and they also win food for their entire district.
Prior to Katniss and Peeta, Haymitch was the only living winner of district 12. It was very rare for anyone from district 12 to win the Hunger Games.
There is a lot more, but I won't say it so as not to spoil anything for the next Hunger Games movie that you will be watching.

I agree, to an extend, but ... !!! You can not put a book into an film with all things in. It would be too long and only be interessting to the readers of the book. So no money out of the film.
      For example some Films ....
1.) The Ring Trilogie of JRR Tolkins books. There are so many things left out or falsified, that the readers of the booksomtimes shke their heads (Tom Bombadil, Glorfindel (not Eowin) at the Ford, and other minor things) which had to be excluded to not prolong the film and made it to "boring"
      2.) Dune (the new Films).
The Dune Book Series is very "political" and "social" burdend. With many passages which explains the Bene Gesserit, The Guild, The Ixian, the Mentat, the Butlers Djihad, ...
If you put all this into the Films they will be about 6 times longer and very boring to the "normal" movie looking People, so no Income.
      3.) Ready Player One
Here is the main line of the book and the movie the same, but for example, all of the Quest (except of the last one) are completly different.
First (in Movie) is a Race, in Book it is an D&D Adventure with an very old Arcadegame at the end. And then he has to go through the Wargames Film.
Second (in the book) you have to solve Zork 1 (an ancient Text-Adventure). After this he has togo to the Cooparate Building of Blade Runner an beat an Beat em up Arcade Game.
      etc ..
To long for an entertainmaint movie and to booring for most people.
Please do not understand me in a wrong way, I loved all the movies (and have read all the books). I can see the books and the movies as different entities of of the narration.
For me the books gives me more understnding in the whole universe and the movies are exellent entertainment for 2 to 6 hours. I do not want to miss any of them.

There’s a theory that Foxface (the redheaded girl) purposefully ate the berries. During the earlier training montage, you see her practicing matching plant types, sort of alluding to the fact that she’s knowledgeable about plants. If that was the case then she would most likely have recognized a poisonous plant in their environment. Since there was only Cato and Katniss and Peeta left besides herself, the theory is that she knew she would meet a horrible end having to go up against one of them and took control of her fate by eating the berries and taking her life. I haven’t read the books in at least a decade so I’m not sure if this is actually how the stories go, but as far as a movie theory goes, it’s one of my favorites 🙏🏼😔

I would also say that at this point in time the majority of people both in the districts and the Capitol see the hunger games as but a mere spectator event, like we do in today's society with reality tv shows. Ceneca Crane is a new game maker and inexperienced. I also think he didn't really see the games as some kind of fear and control weapon the same way Snow does. So the fact that he stopped the games when Katniss and Peeta decided to commit suicide shows that he was Ill-prepared for such a defying act. He stopped it because he probably still thinks of the games as some kind of narrative driven reality show. Obviously Snow was absolutely displeased and punished the game maker for his naivety and weakness... But had to let the two Victor's play out their love story because the Capitol loved them and if Snow killed them off then perhaps even the Capitol citizens may have caused some chaos as well.

After you finish the movies, I highly recommend the books or audiobooks. Because all of the books are in first person from Katniss's perspective, there are some cool things they added in the movies that we couldn't see in the books (like Haymitch going to Seneca Crane to try and convince him to lean into the romance and let them both live. We're with Katniss the whole time in the book so that just comes out of nowhere and Katniss reasons in her mind that the love story must be playing well with the audience), but that also meant we lost a ton of Katniss's thoughts. Like the reason that she was so cold towards Peeta at the beginning isn't super clear. First, they do a terrible job of showing what happened between them (they cut the first flashback off at a point that makes it seem like he refused to help her) but then even when we eventually see what did happen, the movies haven't adequately shown how much she haaaaaaates to owe people. She was going into a fight to the death that she couldn't afford to lose and she would be going up against someone she owed her life to. The books just have a ton more and they're not super long so they're quick to get through and I think you'd really enjoy them

The writing of the Hunger Games books was inspired because one day the author was watching TV and was switching channels back and forth between a competitive reality TV show and the war in Afghanistan. At one point, what she was watching got so blurred in her head that she couldn't tell the difference between the programs.
I might be dead wrong, but from my understanding, the reality TV show that the author was watching was Survivor: Cook Islands. The very same exact Survivor season my brother, Billy Garcia, was a contestant on back in 2006.

They mess with the rules for no other reason than because they can. The whole point of the Hunger Games is to exert power on the districts. They do it all because they can, because it reminds the districts that they are in control. They wanted to give them the hope they could win together to drive them together to play on the romance, but they changed to rules back for the drama of forcing them to kill each other, but at the end of the day it's all because they have total control and it reminds everyone that they can do whatever they want with their lives.

In the books when Katniss got the score of 11 she wasn't happy about it.
Because in her eyes the capitol put "a target on her back".
Of course the strongest or best trained tributes would go after those with a higher score to eliminate the threat if you know what I mean...
And the game makers clearly wanted Katniss dead for being ballsy, I guess.
Shooting the apple out of that pigs mouth was pretty darn impressive but also defiant.

39:11 This is how Katniss describes it in the book: “It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love.” It’s something exclusive to District 12, and no one else would’ve seen it before Katniss volunteered. So the people of 11 doing it is a pretty big deal.

So happy to see you delving into this story. Without giving any spoilers here is some background information that might help give you a better idea of what is going on in this story, especially if you choose to continue watching the films. *** *This is a really long post.* ***
The Hunger Games is set in a future dystopian country essentially made up of the United States and a little bit of Canada after an apocalypse, which caused the world's landmasses to change shape while the sea levels began to rise. Though it was not directly stated, there was an insinuation that the Earth fell victim to issues like climate change, overpopulation, and catastrophic wars. Following the destruction, a new country called *Panem* was formed and the location of The Hunger Games was brought to life.
Panem is comprised of the Capitol, where the games are fought, and the other 13 districts that surround it. The closer to the Capitol, the more money the districts have, so Katniss, as well as all of District 12 are very poor.
Each district is in charge of crafting, supplying, and maintaining a particular resource for all of Panem, as follows:
    District 1 = Luxury Items
District 2 = Masonry and Defense
    District 3 = General Electronics
    District 4 = Fishing
    District 5 = Power (Electricity)
    District 6 = Transportation
    District 7 = Lumber
    District 8 = Textiles
    District 9 = Grain
    District 10 = Livestock
    District 11 = Agriculture
    District 12 = Coal Mining.
District 13 = Nuclear Weaponry (Before the start of the series, this District was obliterated by the Capitol for going against them.)
While in the story it is said that this annual competition is a way to remember the past so a war doesn’t happen again, the truth is much darker. The true purpose of the Hunger Games is to provide entertainment for the Capitol as well as to remind the districts of the Capitol's power. The Games also show that the Capitol has a lack of remorse or forgiveness for the failed rebellion of the current competitors' ancestors. The reason they are held using children ages 12-18 is that it allows the Capitol to maintain the narrative that even the most innocent people in Panem are corruptible (i.e. willing to kill).
Each child in the age range at the time of the "Reaping" is entered into the lottery drawing one time for each year they are eligible (i.e. 1 entry at 12, 2 entries at 13, 3 entries at 14, etc.) The tessera is a system in which children who are eligible for the Games may submit their name to the lottery extra times in exchange for a year's supply of food and oil for one person, collected on a monthly basis. The child could also claim further tesserae for as many members of their family as needed. Depending on the family and their particular circumstances, the tesserae may or may not have been enough to live on, and alternate sources of food - sometimes acquired illegally - may also have needed to be pursued. This is why in this first Hunger Games film Gale says he is in there 42 times; he is trying to keep his family alive and fed. They don't say it in the movie, but Katniss is also in the lottery more times for doing the same thing since she had been taking tesserae for herself, her sister, and her mother since she was 12.

I think the switch from both Katness and Peta Bread could be winners, to only one can survive was about controling the Districts. It had very little to do with the champions. They wanted the people to see that even "lovers" will turn on each other when pushed to do so. The message that would send is "Don't trust each other. Don't trust your community. Don't trust your friends and family"
The more suspicious and isolated the people are, the less likely they'll be able to revolt against the capital.

all children hide their fear differently. katniss doesnt allow herself to get attached until she sees Prim in Rue. Rue literally hides in trees, peta downplays his strengths, thresh protects others but left himself vulnerable, glimmer and marvel acts haughty, clove and cato were threatening but just as afraid, clove screamed for cato but cato never came because he was afraid of certain dth when thresh and katniss in close proximity. the tributes are all children trying to win to earn money to survive and/or see their families again. katniss saw that when cato was being attacked by the dogs and he begged please. No one much more the tributes want to be in the hunger games, but the moment it begins the youth are herded like cattle to be selected, allowed to say goodbye or receive well-wishes from their loved ones. but they are just children, 12-18 is a child. katniss is the protag so we obviously root for her but we should pity the tributes that were named, unnamed, and especially pity those that were blinded by the environment they were raised in, they didnt have a choice which district they were born into.

The reason they did the "two can survive" just to take it away was to prove a point. People were believing them to be in love which could incite rebellion and too much hope. What better way to soil that then to make them kill each other? In love, how, when one killed the other to survive, it would've shown it as being just a strategy to survive which would inspire nobody.

Gale is 18yo, Peeta and Katniss are 16yo. Peeta is a merchant meaning he probably never had to take tessarae meaning he only had his name 4 times in the bowl. The odds were not in Prim and Peeta's favors.

One thing the games do is pit districts against each other. There is no communication between districts. The only interactions they have is when they kill each other in the games. They sometimes form alliances, but there is only one winner.
When Katness had a little tribute to Rue, that was unheard of. She showed care, love, respect for someone from a sifferent district. In the book, before the fighting, Rue's district sent bread to Katness in thanks. Unheard of. Even that bread was expensive and they still had a kid alive to send to if they chose. But they chose her.
Then, when he saved her and spared her life. Also unprecedented. He even took Cato's bag so Cato would chase him. So many little rebellions even before the end. The Capitol people are oblivious and love her. President Snow sees her as a threat.

You picked up on a lot of details and had some very good insights, but having watched your Harry Potter and LOTR series, I expected no less :) The reason they changed the rules at the end is as simple as it is abhorrent: every decision the Gamemaker makes is to drive the drama to the next level, regardless of how unfair and soulless. Star-crossed lovers unexpectedly winning is dramatic, but star-crossed lovers having to fight to the death? That's way more so.
Something I like to point out to reactors about Cato and the careers is that even though they're vicious, ruthless killers. . . they were raised to be that way. They had the whole idea of "dying and killing for glory" drilled into their heads since birth. They've been brainwashed and trained to be what they are and, in that way, they're victims of the Capitol too.

His feelings were genuine, hers were to keep them alive. They were little when he had a crush on her, they just make them look older here in the bread scene. He actually purposely burnt the bread and got a beating from his mom so he could give it to her. Sweetest heart of any character in books I’ve ever read. She on the other hand only ever thought of survival here and at home. Gale was never more then a friend in her eyes. With Peeta she does start to develop feelings of caring about him because he’s so genuinely kind.

to discuss a few questions you had…
1st:when Peeta announces his feelings for Katniss during his interview those are his genuine feelings however he did discuss his plan to do so beforehand with Haymitch who gave him the thumbs up and also decided that Katniss should not be told because he wanted her reaction to be genuine because in the book she wasn’t back stage but on the stage in the background in full view of the audience and cameras
2nd: Peeta had been planning and working his way into teaming with the Career Pack pretty much the entire time they were in training and if my memory is correct they agreed to team with him only the day before they went into the arena
finally: the reason you’re getting mixed signals from Katniss about who she likes Gale or Peeta is because the movies are made in the third person and the books are in the first person… yes in the books she’s giving mixed signals as well however since we the audience are privy to her innermost thoughts a good reader should be able to predict who she’d pick midway through the first book, i won’t spoil it but i will say that the reason i picked up so early on who she would choose is for one simple reason… she was trying to convince herself she was in love with one guy while simultaneously trying to convince herself that she wasn’t in love with the other guy

The male tribute Peeta is played by Josh Hutcherson who had his first smaller parts when he was about 10 years old. So it is quite possible that you saw him as a child actor.
Most people have usually seen Bridge to Terabithia, Zathura or the Brendan Fraser movie Journey to the Center of the Earth (based on the Jule Verne novel of the same name)... sometimes the Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (sequel and based on another novel by Jules Verne).
Zathura is a movie that I loved not only for the fact that it is based on a novel by Chris Van Allsburg as is the movie Jumanji. I would think that you might like both these movies but then I would start with Jumanji for no other reason than than it was produced before Zathura.

about the bread scene because they absolutely butchered it here, peeta and katniss are both 11 when that happens in the books, you can only pull tessary when you turn 12, her father had died a year prior if i remember correctly and ahe hadnt been able to hunt without him out of fear because it was usually him the took her out to the woods which are off limits to the citizens of district 12 and its punishable by death to be caught leaving or hunting (although the peace keepers also buy what she hunts in the books because nobody really cares about 12) so shed been trying to sell prims old clothes to get money to buy food for her family that was starving and she'd basically collapsed and resigned herself to death after trying to go through the bakery trash can to try and find anything to bring home and while she was sitting under the tree in the bakerys back yard she saw peeta who came out with burnt bread being hit by his mom who was angry he messed up a loaf and told him to throw it to the pigs but he waited for his mom to leave and then threw the loaf to her and that gave her enough hope to survive, she started hunting and gathering on her own after that when she saw the first dandelion of the year while walking back from school (dandelions are edible) and she now kinda associates that flower with the hope peeta gave her to survive

To answer your question, Gale has his name in so many times because once you turn 12, you can put your name into the reaping for extra rations. If I remember right (and I could be off), each year you can put your name in once for everyone in your family, earning rations for each time you do it. Gale had a lot of younger siblings, so could put his name in something like 6 times a year. Between that and his hunting, he kept his family alive. Katniss did it too in the book, but I think could only put her name in 2 extra times per year, for Prim and her mom. It adds up because you don't start fresh every year. If you put your name in say 6 times a year, at 13, your name is in there 12 times, at 14 it's in there 18 times, and so on.

Katniss gets a sponsor gift when she was mourning her death, and it was a small bread with a message "with gratitude from the people of District 11". For the change of the rules, the first change was to generate mor viewers in the capitol, the backchange at the end was, "Ther can only be ONE", and the backchange of the backchange was that they have a winner and not none. And the move of Katniss with the poisond berrys upsets the President as explaind in the next two books and three movies.

Why did Katniss say Peeta made her look weak? Katniss associates love with weakness because after her father’s death her mother had a breakdown and Katniss was left to raise Prim alone.

45:46 in the books (and I think I’m a deleted scene) after Rue’s death, Katniss receives a small loaf of bread in a sponsor parachute from District 11. The entire District pooled their money together to buy her the bread to show their thanks for Rue. It was one of my favorite moments in the book, and the first time a District sponsored an item to a tribute not from their own District.

They were playing mind games. They let them think they could both survive to play up the romance angle. Then they thought she would kill Peta.

The number of times your name is in the bowl increases with every year from 12 to 18 (12 yos have their name in once, 13 twice, etc.). But there's also a system they don't explain in the movies called "tesserae" where you can get a years worth of flour, grain, and oil for an additional "entry." Gale is 17, so his name was in 6 times, and he has a mother and four brothers. He didn't want his brothers to put their name in more times, so he took the tessarae deal for himself, his mother, and his four brothers. So he has 6 as a base + 6 "entries" * 6 tessarae deals, so his name is in there 42 times total. Katniss did the same thing with Prim, and took tessarae for herself, Prim, and her mom. Since she's 16, her name is in 5 times + 5 "entries" * 3 tessarae, so her name was in there 20 times. Prim's was only in once.

51:49 The purpose for change in the rules the first time was to distract the people in the districts from Rue’s death and the rebellion that followed in District 11. Katniss’ heartfelt tears & tribute to Rue with the flowers and 3-finger salute resonated with people across the districts - people who usually sent their kids to fight one another and saw each other as rivals. By bringing the love story back into focus, it was a distraction.
Keep in mind that nothing is fair with the Capitol. They can change rules however and whenever they want. Katniss called their bluff with the berries at the end. As Peeta said, they “needed their victor,” so Seneca Crane, the game maker with the facial hair stopped them and let them both win. He paid for that with his life… Snow’s touch with the poison berries to point out his fatal error.

President Snow warned the gamemaster about giving the districts too much hope. Having two victors was too hopeful. But Katniss may have realized, that having no victors was even worse. But the gamemaster had to pay for his back-to-back screwups. Hence the bowl full of berries in a locked room.

I can’t imagine being Effie or Haymitch, meeting these tributes again and again, knowing they are probably going to die in the arena. Effie overcompensates by being extra chipper, and Haymitch uses alcohol to cope.

They were never going to allow Katniss and Peeta to win. At the end of the day, this is a show, so they play every angle they can to make it entertaining. Their love story was another angle. And them changing the rules at the end was so that they could have a dramatic finale. They just didn’t expect it to backfire on them.

They changed the rules to start with for two victors to change it up and create a more compelling story/drama out of the games, and then changed it back to play them, so one would kill the other, implying the capitol is still in charge in the end - and yes maybe they thought the best way to be rid of Katniss, having her face to face with Peeta and hoping he would kill her to survive. But Crane spared their lives so there wouldn't be no victor at all. Crane was then left with the berries to end himself... punishment from Snow for letting Katniss/Peeta manipulate the result I think.

Everyone always thinks the line about him watching her go home from school is creepy 😂 He didn't say he followed her home... just at the end of the school day he watched her leave. Plus, they were six years old!
Also, I don't know if anyone's already answered this or not (I'm a month late to the party), but they never intended both of them to win. They "changed" the rules to get the two of them to team up, because that's good TV, and people would enjoy getting to watch their romance play out. And them making it to the end was even better, because taking back the revision and making them have to fight each other would make it the most dramatic finale in Hunger Games history. It was all only ever about making an entertaining show for the Capital audience.
