I think the new format is perfect for openings like this with not too much hidden symbolism!! But the ones with pretty heavy symbolism and/or very fast paced animation could need a more frame by frame approach. Love the video, I honestly am in love with Red Swan and I'm glad someone else feels the same!!
I think you might have missed the theme of the white threads that appear all over this OP. The white threads that seems to come from that one "story book" shot of Frida and Historia. Seeing how this season is all about lost memories or stolen memories, and how Frida is shown to have that specific titan power.. idk. maybe you did catch it but wanted to avoid spoiling that part of the plot in which case, here's some love and appriciation.
Never undestood the backlash this opening received. I'd much rather have something unique that sets itself apart than another repetitive "anthem" opening that sounds exactly the same as the previous ones and that makes the seasons blend together.
As a loyal manga reader I never understood the hate this op got. It made me cry when I first saw it, and it seems fitting to use in the most human arc, it also hurts so much more for manga readers considering the state most of those relationships that are shown in the OP are right now. So I always thought it was brilliant.
wait i don't understand, how was that spoilers, you couldn't imagne that the relationships would stay the same forever did you. the OP didn't implie anyone dyings or how and who the relationship changed or why the OP said just enough to present their opinion and signpost for those who do understand
@@thekage100 well, since you said you read the manga I would tell you my take on it. So spoilers. The main thing I mean is that right now Eren has done a lot to damage his relationship with everyone and his friendship with Mikasa and Armin has changed a lot. He no longer talks to them, and they seem far away from each other to the point Armin was talking to Annie's crystal because he felt so alone and lost to what Eren is doing. So Isayama has been hinting the break of Armin and Eren's friendship is coming for a long time, and I think this is how it starts, they can't understand each other anymore. And Mikasa is kind of cought in the middle of being loyal to Eren and understanding that what he doing is not all that great and that she eventually is gonna have to chose sides. So that's for the main trio. The other relationship I mean is Levi and Erwin, and more importantly how Erwins death is so missed not only by Levi but by everyone else, I feel right now both Levi and Hanji are dealing with a lost of the drive Erwin gave to them as a leader. Next up, I would say Historia being a slave to her blood status like her sister, and also the fact that she is now looking and leaving a life that seems like a cross between her father and her mother is really sad, cuz all Historia wanted was to leave for herself as Ymir told her to do and she keeps being put on positions where she has little to no choice. The manga is in a pretty sad place to me, and by the time I got around to watching the new anime episodes it was already after Sasha's death and knowing Eren was basically acting behind everyone's backs. So it just hit home very hard for me.
wow! thanks a lot! for you to write all this amazingness down!! it makes so much more sense, I guess I missed the bigger picture when reading it! I think I agree with you! especially the part about Historia ... and honestly I am sad, but also hyped, because you never know where Isayama will go :)!!! so get a smile on Ana! :D
@@thekage100 I am a bit of a masoquist so the sadness makes the manga better for me. My favorite arc is still the return to wall Maria even though it broke my heart. So you welcome I am glad to help! Internet hug from Venezuela!
When you see the ending of the op ( 9:39 ) Its like Mikasa and Armin Have their eyes closed , whereas Eren has his Eyes opened. If you read manga You know what is happeining currently ... Its like Eren knows the truth and has his eyes opened.... whereas mikasa and armin, dont know the right thing..
this OP kind of supported the whole mood of discovery and actually finding out wtf is going on rather than just straightup random bloodslaughter like the 1st season. The cast is more experienced, and they're a lot more mature now too. I also feel like this tone of OP would have fit the next season where (spoiler for anime-only's) We go beyond the wall and discover a whole new civilization and go after eren's half-brother-thing (that asshole with the glasses)
I like to think of "Red Swan" as the "ugly duckling" of the Attack on Titan openings. It was rejected for being different to the other openings on initial release. But as time passes, the song matured into something beautiful (like a swan), and more people accepted it as part of Attack on Titan's music.
I love this opening, Out of all attack on titan openings including the newest one. In my opinion Red swan by hyde is the best attack on titan opening ever, i rank it like this AOT Opening Ranked 1. OP 4 Red swan 2. OP 1 guren 3. OP 5 shoukei 4. OP 3 sasageyo 5. OP 2 tsubasa
I thought the op fit. This season had much of the cast in states of deep contemplation with the MC being forced to reconsider his reason for being. The ending scene with Reiner and the Beast Titan make me think we'll go back to a hype op next season.
That's a point, he was always violent, but the thing is that he was stil innocent back then. Even as a teenager Eren still had a mostly childish mentality of seeing the world as black and white, which is slowly cracked throughout the story progression, so MB's point still stands.
I dont understand why people always use that shit against him. You literally say the word in the sentence. KIDNAPPERS. How is what he did ANY more terrible compared to what they did and were going to do to Mikasa.
That's pretty much his whole thing, though. Eren's morality was always black and white, he saw himself and those he cared about as good, and everything that defied that was evil, and beyond a certain point, even inhuman. When he killed those kidnappers, he couldn't see them as humans, he simply saw them as demons, and so he did what he did without a sliver of remorse. Even in his teens, when he finds out he's a Titan, he himself says that he thought nothing of it, that he was still good, and that being a Titan meant absolutely nothing about it. What makes Eren an entertaining character is seeing him notice how wrong he was every time a tough decision is made, how the world has a lot more grey than it has black and white.
What he did wasn't wrong, but it's surprising and horrifying how Eren seemed to enjoy stabbing people to death so much. On first viewing that episode comes off as edgy, but it's actually a red flag that will be important to Eren's character later.
“Hell, they don’t even fight titans” A very good catch. S3 part 1 isn’t abt fighting titans anymore. It’s humans vs humans, instantly making the story have more depth than the generic shounen. An entire new world open and a new lore is introduced. Very beautiful opening. Very fitting opening. Personally my fav op is Red Swan and fav ed is Shock
At first, I was quite surprised, however as soon as I heard "what's the lie/truth/to believe" I got it. I'd read the manga and I knew what was coming. After listening to it hundreds of times by now it's possibly (can't believe I'm saying this) my favourite AoT intro. Absolute masterpiece and goes with the arc perfectly. Your video only further confirms it :D
Red Swan immediately became my favorite AOT OP because of its emotional tone, but also what it symbolized in terms of shifting the focus of the show's conflict. The epic, over-the-top OPs like Guren no Yumiya were effective in their time for conveying the humans rising up against the titans. Whereas Red Swan is more quiet and personal, symbolizing the conflict between the main characters and other people. This conflict is much more grim and thought-provoking than just killing mindless titans, and we need to steel ourselves for that shift, just as the main cast does. (Armin is a great example of this) I think Red Swan is just what we need to get into the somber, determined mindset that the characters find themselves in. But yeah, the motif of the fleeting past works too.
Frame-by-frame analysis can feel a bit slow and redundant, and this style of focusing on the themes is much more efficient for getting to the actual point. I like!
Attack on titan is probably the only anime that I grew up with. And it made me realize, just like the show, how much my life has went down since the pandemic started. Now that the show is finished, my anguish has ended, quarantine is over, my life has started working again. 2 months in since school started, fitting in well, it feels good, but I also long for those days where I just enjoyed watching aot.
It terrifies me how much of a parallel my life was, to aot. It's liberating that it's finally over. But at the same time, I long for those old days of pure bliss. Atleast I know that my childhood was good. Afterall, I wish for it again.
Never knew people didn’t like this op until I watched this video. Honestly don’t understand it but I guess I am just a sucker for anime ops that sound so beautiful and deep.
To me the Red Swan is my favorite Opening. Simply because this isnt an action heavy season, its one that is unfolding like a mystery novel with plenty of answers to boot. This is the season where our characters grow the most, from Historia, Levi, Erwin, Jean, Armin, and even Eren. So with that growth and this season of answers comes reflection and prospective and we see that within this OP. From the loss of innocence that you see in the protag trio eye's as adults from when they were happy kids. The dream of a better yesterday with Erwin and his father, the new levels of trust that levi has today in comparison to his childhood. Its all played so well and beautifully as this is the middle point of the series and our cast are bout to venture into the next unknown.
@@Txukasa1 hey im not saying it did Im just stating my love for this season and its op. To me what always made A.O.T amazing was the mystery and those past Op's got you hyped for what was to come (in a linear since of speaking). Although now as we have an answer heavy season, it's become reversed and is now giving us a look back on how far evething has come.
I resent the notion this season wasn’t action oriented. From the very first episode where Levi went BERSERK on the MP’s to the MP’s vs the Scouts to the flashback of Grisha killing the Reiss family to Eren busting out his hardening ability to stopping Rod Reiss. There was hype throughout in my opinion with just as much backstory as they gave Historia and Ymir last season. I’m a manga reader. And I hate this OP 🤷🏿♂️
@@lioneljones3140 im not saying it doesnt have action I was saying that it had less action in comparison to its other seasons and thats not a bad thing.

"3 scared little kids in the woods plus diminutive figure with the head of an adult man. God baby Reiner looks creepy." SENT ME. Like, that caught me off guard so much I love it. On another note, I watched all of AoT, up to the current series, in 4 days, and while I love all the OP's, watching these videos gives me a chance to actually look at the symbolism my brain always connects as "oooo pretty pictures"
I'm ngl, I would be really REALLY thrilled to see Geoff do a re-analysis of this OP now that the series has ended and everyone finally understands what the manga readers felt upon seeing this for the first time. :') (I think we were in the middle of the beginnings of the Rumbling arc when S3 dropped. GOD. PAIRING THE CAMPFIRE SCENE IN THE MANGA TO SEEING THIS OP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE ANIME HURTS LIKE A BITCH.)
It's pretty common that most fans would be upset because one thing or things got changed, I however like to keep an open mind and personally I love this new OP just like all the others that came before it.
There’s 2.6k comments so I doubt he’ll read mine but I *really* liked the way he tied his analysis of the op together through the themes rather than frame by frame, and then analyzed the meaning. It reminded me of really good essays that the smart kids in my English class would write that transform the way I saw and read a book. I hated writing essays, I just liked reading them, guess that’s why my marks were so bad lol Does anybody know of other channels that do this sorta thing? I can think of Solar sands analyzing weird art (like liminal spaces for example) or tiffanyferg analyzing modern trends and how they reflect on us but that’s kind of it. I love watching people analyze stuff!

Still my favorite OP. Manga readers appreciated a lot more than anime onlies when it aired. It fits in SO WELL. with Eren's inner emotional conflicts towards the end of the manga. Such a depressing piece of music. 10/10
Red Swan is what made me what Attack on Titan. Yoshiki and Hyde are my childhood and adolescence, and I'm beyond grateful to them for bringing this series to my adulthood.
Not bad for this one. There was a lot to unpack thematically. I feel like for these slower paced, theme heavy op, this is a really good approach. The more shonen esq op's you cover I think need the frame by frame, but this style worked really well for the emotionally focused OP.
This op is absolutely SAD to me SPECIALLY after knowing the ending of the manga and just GAH i almost sobbed the first time i watched it again after reading the entire manga. Which was about 4 months later just to be clear.
The opening moments of season 3 with Eren's monologue about Armin's tales of "the sea", followed by this OP were so beautiful I had to go back and rewatch just that part several times before moving onto the rest of the episode...
There is so much foreshadowing for Armin-related things in this op too, at least as I see it (esp the cut in Eren’s hand appearing over the figure of Armin, and Armin sitting on the destroyed rooftop at the end, pulled to standing by his friends)
You might think I'm crazy, but, my theory why this opening is named Red Swan is probably because before, s1 and s2, they were pure people, killing only beasts to survive, being pure white swans, but after killing people because of the politics, they became red swans because of the human blood and people they killed... Something like the pure white rose, Kaneki, being transformed to blood red.... (Tokyo Ghoul)
I think it's simple, red swan just objectively conveys emotions better then any opening, humans are emotional creatures, naturally this op should literally be at the top but sadly it isn't and it's a shame
I think you summed up Red Swan perfectly in one word; personal. After three seasons of learning to love these characters, this opening imparts to much about their experiences and their feelings that it connects the viewer to them in a way that wasn't possible with the first three openings. I get goosebumps whenever I want it, and actually I might go rewatch it right now.
Jesus Christ this whole show is so perfect. The characters, the openings, beautiful animation, genius story and worldbuilding, mind boggling plot twists, and foreshadowing and reveals that makes it seem like Isayama had already finished the story before he even put pen to paper on the first panel. This show and manga are just brilliant and I love how much it changes. It isn't just Shonen with a little more blood then usual, no it is a story that evolves with it's characters, bring out their greatest strengths and weaknesses, leading them down a path that was set in stone some 2000 years ago. When I reached the final chapter, I felt hollow, as though I had just lost a part of myself. And I had. Attack on Titan was a part of me, a chapter in my book that I had forever finished. I could write a essay on why this story is so brilliant, or even, as this video did, on why just one singular part of it is.
The first time I heard it I thought they had hired Muse to make the S3 OST. The instrumental part is reminiscent of Muse's style, especially Starlight or some of their other softer rock ballads. And the singer's voice is close to, but not quite, the Muse lead singer's voice. The more I listen to it the more wistful, tragic and poignant it sounds, especially after watching all of S3. Those are very Japanese themes, and very fitting with this season of, as you observe, lost innocence, lost lives, and the reveal of a hard truth at great cost.

wait i don't understand, how was that spoilers, you couldn't imagne that the relationships would stay the same forever did you.
the OP didn't implie anyone dyings or how and who the relationship changed or why
the OP said just enough to present their opinion and signpost for those who do understand
Internet hug from Venezuela!
lol yall red swan haters will come back crying watching red swan after the FREEDOM SCENE IN CHAPTER 131
When you see the ending of the op ( 9:39 ) Its like Mikasa and Armin Have their eyes closed , whereas Eren has his Eyes opened.

this OP kind of supported the whole mood of discovery and actually finding out wtf is going on rather than just straightup random bloodslaughter like the 1st season. The cast is more experienced, and they're a lot more mature now too. I also feel like this tone of OP would have fit the next season where (spoiler for anime-only's)
We go beyond the wall and discover a whole new civilization and go after eren's half-brother-thing (that asshole with the glasses)
Please put a better spoiler warning!

SHINZOU WO SASAGETA!!!
I like to think of "Red Swan" as the "ugly duckling" of the Attack on Titan openings. It was rejected for being different to the other openings on initial release. But as time passes, the song matured into something beautiful (like a swan), and more people accepted it as part of Attack on Titan's music.
"Red Swan" and "Shoukei to Shikabane no Michi" are probably the best openings they could have made for Season 3.
People are just mad this is the *_best_* OP yet ;^)
Agreed.
Yeah
Really? I skipped it every time
Sky night the nunk you skip anime openings?
I love this opening,
Out of all attack on titan openings including the newest one. In my opinion
Red swan by hyde is the best attack on titan opening ever, i rank it like this
AOT Opening Ranked
1. OP 4 Red swan
2. OP 1 guren
3. OP 5 shoukei
4. OP 3 sasageyo
5. OP 2 tsubasa
I thought the op fit. This season had much of the cast in states of deep contemplation with the MC being forced to reconsider his reason for being.
The ending scene with Reiner and the Beast Titan make me think we'll go back to a hype op next season.
I agree
Why next season?the season is still going on until 24 episodes with a break
Mc?
Nvm i found out it means main character
Just one minor quibble... I don't think Eren ever qualified for 'innocence'. Did you _see_ what he did to those kidnappers?
The kidnappers were human traffickers. You mean to tell me that you won't react the same towards someone who kidnaps people to be sold as sex slaves?
Finally someone appreciates this masterpiece. I loved it as soon as I heard it
“Hell, they don’t even fight titans”
A very good catch.
Its an OP that needed a little time to grow on me. This season's ED was one of my favorites for the show.
cause its still made by linked horizon, so yeah the band that made all the other 3 openings.
I can’t listen to this song without my throat clenching up. Even out of the context of the show, it is an absolutely gorgeous piece of music.
Thanks MB for appreciating this AoT openinong song.
We all know that the FEELS and the EMOTION is much higher if you're a manga reader.
I may be 5 years late but thank god someone made this video. Red swan has and always will blow me away
Any other manga readers thinking of Eren's transformation in chapter 100 when they see the cut on his hand in this op?
Doccyy honestly I was thinking of you know who's sacrifice.
That ain't it chief
I bet you since this is a two cour season they're gonna have linked horizon do the next op hype battle for wall maria against zeke reiner bertolt
Yeah, but I feel like something with more iron, like Zog Nit Keyn Mol, would have gotten that across a bit more smoothly.
Frame-by-frame analysis can feel a bit slow and redundant, and this style of focusing on the themes is much more efficient for getting to the actual point. I like!
Why does Red Swan have to be defended? It's fucking beautiful. It goes so well with the story in S3.
Damn like not even Pokemon?
I honestly prefer this method over a frame by frame breakdown
THE JUNIOR HIGH OPENING IS THE BEST OPENING IN THE SHOW
but this is some cool insight also.
If you guys want a hype theme, you can listen to the ending song, like a part is Shinzuo Sasageta referring to the past
FINALLY RED SWAN APPRECIATION!! After AOT (manga) ended, i cant help but listen to this on repeat. And everytime i do, it gives me CHILLS
>Red Swan has most unconventional design
My War: Hold my beer.
Its all played so well and beautifully as this is the middle point of the series and our cast are bout to venture into the next unknown.
oh well, too bad red swan isnt what made attack on titan popular or even what may have led people to alert you to it :(
@@Txukasa1 hey im not saying it did
Im just stating my love for this season and its op.
@@lioneljones3140 im not saying it doesnt have action
I was saying that it had less action in comparison to its other seasons and thats not a bad thing.
@@Txukasa1 I guess Attack on Titan has nothing else going for it then if the OP is the only thing people care about. Why are people even still watching it?
*You forgot about the foreshadowing to Armin with Eren's hand bleeding.*
To be fair you can't really mention that without spoiling unreleased episodes.
What exactly does that foreshadow? No worries, I've read the manga but currently there doesn't ring any bell with this image in mind.

Seeing Red Swan after 139 = tears
The best part is from the full song: “we’ll see the end. We’ll be the end”. The episode “To You, 2000 years from now” says hello.
So he does red Swan but not sasageyo

He appeared
He kinda did it in his Top 5 Best OP of 2017 video.
I agree whit you
Mother's Basement will u ever do parasyte?? It doesn't even need to be an op analysis. Literally just anything parasyte...
Yes, the point of Red Swan is maturity. Graduated from the simple dichotomies of the past. Things get complex in season 3. No more clear lines.
GOD. PAIRING THE CAMPFIRE SCENE IN THE MANGA TO SEEING THIS OP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE ANIME HURTS LIKE A BITCH.)
man i love this video so much. thanks for doing one of my favorite ops justice because red swan is so underrated. thank you!
It's pretty common that most fans would be upset because one thing or things got changed, I however like to keep an open mind and personally I love this new OP just like all the others that came before it.
Everyone be hating Red Swan, but just wait until Chapter 131 gets animated. You'll all be sobbing
Red swan became my favorite as soon as i heard it and i always get emotional when i hear it
There’s 2.6k comments so I doubt he’ll read mine but I *really* liked the way he tied his analysis of the op together through the themes rather than frame by frame, and then analyzed the meaning. It reminded me of really good essays that the smart kids in my English class would write that transform the way I saw and read a book. I hated writing essays, I just liked reading them, guess that’s why my marks were so bad lol
Does anybody know of other channels that do this sorta thing? I can think of Solar sands analyzing weird art (like liminal spaces for example) or tiffanyferg analyzing modern trends and how they reflect on us but that’s kind of it. I love watching people analyze stuff!

I always loved Red Swan, and after reading the final chapters, 139 esp i love it EVEN MORE
Still my favorite OP. Manga readers appreciated a lot more than anime onlies when it aired. It fits in SO WELL. with Eren's inner emotional conflicts towards the end of the manga.
Such a depressing piece of music. 10/10
This op reminds me a lot of the visuals in your lie in aprils op hikaru nara
Red Swan is what made me what Attack on Titan.
Yoshiki and Hyde are my childhood and adolescence, and I'm beyond grateful to them for bringing this series to my adulthood.
This is my favorite aot opening
Hit my heart immediately
Not bad for this one. There was a lot to unpack thematically. I feel like for these slower paced, theme heavy op, this is a really good approach. The more shonen esq op's you cover I think need the frame by frame, but this style worked really well for the emotionally focused OP.
bro red swan was the best opening 100%, and the full version hits even harder
If you’re a manga reader... you know this song grows on your real hard. Kinda even makes you cry.
Such an amazing review of an incredibly ambiguous opening! I couldn't even imagine that someone would put my exact thoughts into words! 👏😍
It’s like a song to actually *breath* without being in shock
I love this OP. The contrast of the beautiful opening to the dark anime is perfect.
Change of format worked very well, didn't notice too drastic of a difference which is a great trait in an alteration I feel. Great job.
There is so much foreshadowing for Armin-related things in this op too, at least as I see it (esp the cut in Eren’s hand appearing over the figure of Armin, and Armin sitting on the destroyed rooftop at the end, pulled to standing by his friends)
I like the new opening, although I still prefer the previous ones. However, this season's ending song is amazing!
Change in format was fine. Keep up the good work.
7:14
This part has a meaning now with what we know from the manga and season 4. The holy foreshadowing. Just amazing
I had to pause the video because that "GOD, baby Rainer looks creepy" caught me so off guard, well done dude :'D
"Red Swan isn't as hype an op as AoT deserves"
JUST YOU WAIT!!!
Fun thing is that I find this the best Attack on Titan opening theme.
I love Red swan! This opening is perfect for this season!
