@@ojiilemon Because Kaworu showed up for like 5 minutes and his relationship with Shinji is absolute garbage writing designed to make the last Angel death seem more impactful than it really is and a desperate attempt to add moral ambiguity to the Angel battles at the last possible second. I can honestly say, this series is what got me into Anime when I was younger. I still have my Platinum Edition DVD set. I may need to break it out and watch it again. My brain can use a good melting. Also, any anime what uses the words Bologna Pony in the English dub is just too funny.
Hey in honour of Etikas passing I just wanted to say you're a fantastic creator, you brighten my day, distract me from my pain and anxiety, and make me feel like I'm close to someone when I'm alone. Thanks for being here ❤
Geoff, thank you. I’ve always wondered what the text Unit 01’s arms move through was - knowing it’s Anno’s credit slate blows my mind. I’ve always known that the quick flashing montage was deeply meaningful, and served as a sort of blitzkrieg primer for a new viewer, but never understood why it registered as such instead of just random fast flashes of key terms and imagery. Finding out that it’s so thematically organized and actually moves from topic to topic in a cohesive stream of consciousness feels like a validation of sorts. I almost passed on this video cause you’re so hilariously a transparent opportunistic shill, but I figured I’d give you this one. And I’m so glad I did! Genuinely, thank you. And, Congratulations! Edit: and you actually talked about the lyrics!
"The ripple may shows how Shinji and other EVA pilots may push people away when they are emotionally weak" The main design director behind the opening: Yes. Circles
For lack of anywhere else to recommend it, Tokyo Brass Style do an incredible jazzy, big-band-y cover of Cruel Angel's Thesis, which you can find on youtube. Every time I listen to it I'm blown away by the rhythm section, which pulls off a seamless transition from traditional swing to 3/4 jazz waltz to double-time swing flawlessly, plus some awesome stings and riffs on the main theme by the brass and wind sections.
Have heard nothing but greatness about this Anime, finally took the jump and started watching it. I’m 9 episodes in and I see why it gets so much praise. The love and care poured into almost every frame. The characters with more depth than to realise and the way the music all brings it together. Amazing, definitely deserved of all the praise!
I love that Netflix has brought Eva to a new generation in North America, but am I the only one that misses "fly me to the moon" playing during the closing credits?
N3rd Degree No. No you are not. The vast multitudes of people who apparently think the show is irredeemably ruined by the loss of Fly Me To The Moon would suggest you are not alone.
I missed it the first two or three episodes, but later I actually started prefering Rei's Theme, it gives an eerie feeling to the ending of the episode, although Fly Me To The Moon did a great job easing the feeling of dread after watching individual episodes and kind of defusing tension or giving them a more nostalgic feel, it actually prevented me from watching it whole quite a lot of times, and the first time I binged the show I decided to skip the ending no matter how much I liked the song, so I was already aware of its charm. I mean, for something meant to be watched once a week its GENIUS, because you still want to keep watching but FMTTM gives you a feeling of closing, as well as CAT gives you a very very good welcome, so you wait a week, but not with anxiety.
@@sbatou87 Well the cast I can understand as most of them are signed exclusively with Funimation now. I just wish that maybe they would alternate between rei's theme and Fly Me to the Moon. Also, I wish you could disable the autoplay as you miss the snarky preview and constant promise of fan service.
Some aspects you missed on the shot of Rei in the window are that she as clone us on the outside of humanity looking in, hesitantly reaching toward Shinji both as her son figure and as the friend trying to involve her in the world. Also being behind glass is reminiscent of the clone tank. A womb with a view.
OMG I just realized the connection of Rei, all the moon imagery with her, and the Fly me to the Moon closing credits. It's a reflection on Yue, shinji's mother & Rei's clone template. Also I always imagined it was Rei singing the closing song. Now even better to think of it as Rei/Yue
Fun fact: no mater how many times you’ve listened to this song over the past 20 years you’re still not even slightly close to getting tired of hearing it.
Love this episode and this channel. You perfectly layed out why we all love this opening. We need more people like you to stop Netflix from ruining our favorite anime
I think it’s worth mentioning: during the “motherly-figure montage”, Misato’s suggestive clothing and pose hints at Shinji’s destructive view of women (especially ones he is attracted to), friends and people he holds close, other humans in general. He has a hard time connecting with others throughout the show, and he does not know how to connect with/view Misato (mom or pretty lady or punching bag). If she is his surrogate mom, it’s uncomfortable for her to be portrayed as a beautiful naked woman; the viewer is confused. Also, the shot of Rei sitting alone tells a lot about how her inner self feels: isolated, vulnerable, confused, enraged, out of place. She is being used by Gendo and although she does not realize it, it’s almost as if her soul knows it and wants to protest.
I don't know why but i love the scene when Unit 00 and Unit 02 appear. They just look so badass. Especially unit 02 when it uses the progressive knife 🔵⚪00 💜💚01 ❤💛02 ⚫⚪03
You made such a brilliant observation with the gundam series at that time and its protagonist, Gundam War in The Pocket was probably one of the only Gundam Movies i actually really liked i couldn't get into any of the series especially the flashy ones because of that exact reason , What gundam War In the Pocket did was actually showing what Gundam truly were War machines for killing the little boy in the film begins infatuated with the idea of them and thinks they are cool but by the end of the movie he realizes that they are actually tools for war, and that's what made it so memorable and resonating with me.
Something interesting: the umbilical cable attaches to Unit 1 in about the spot an epidural gets inserted in a person's back during labour. Just more mother connections I suppose.
I've assisted many anesthesiologists in performing spinal and epidural insertions, and no, that place is too high up the back. Epidurals and spinal anesthesia is inserted on the itra-vertebral space on the lumbar vertebral area. The place where the umbilical cable is inserted is either in T-11, T-12, or L-1 at the absolute lowest, which is just too high.
Me after hearing the opening for the first time: "Wow! This anime must be so amazing and light-hearted!" Me after watching the series and EOE: "I have been permanently scarred.. I will never recover from this..." This was about 2-3 years ago. This shit fucked me up.
Honestly, when they show EVA-01 it gives me the feeling of a fallen angel due to it leaned over like it's chained down in pain in its artificial prison of metal making it seems like it wasn't given a choice when it fell from grace, and when it shows it acts on its own it shows the new wings that are artificial wings of light showing that it can't be controlled and will go against those who try to control it.
17:07 Just an observation I've surprisingly seen nobody else make, before if you take a closer look at Eva 01s' face you can notice the "angel" pattern of the infamous Sachiel, also known as the third angel. This same "angel" pattern can be seen on the angel Gaghiel, also known as the sixth angel but, here it is easy to miss due to its small size. This angel face also appears in the rebuilds on the redesigned Sahaquiel and one of the unnamed angels. You can also notice a similar face in the opening during the beginning. This is good evidence that Evas and Angels are closer than most think.
As someone who hasn't actually watched Eva in years, and now currently going through it with a new viewer, you seriously can't get tired of this OP. Its just too good.
This has been on my list for years and I was awestruck by the philosophy. It took a direction I wasn't expecting, and the final two episodes were impressive and thought provoking.
Causing the third impact to tear down the AT Fields of all humanity is one of my favorite metaphors in probably anything ever, since it could also be seen as a great tragedy that causes us to put aside our differences and fears and work together to become better. Goddam Evangelion is good
Fuck yeah dude. This is the kind of content I LOVE to see. Thank you sooooo much for this analysis dude. It makes me appreciate the anime so much more as well as the team behind making the opening. You’re the best 💪
When I first saw this opening I was so confused. I just saw it and thought it was a ridiculous opening just flashing a bunch of images. Now that you described what it means it is now quite beautiful & amazing! Thank you for analyzing it.
As a note on Jerry Anderson influences the launch sequence for the first activation of Unit 1 has to be a not so subtle nod to the launch of Thunderbird 1.
Meursaulty I almost missed the fapping scene too because I was checking my phone. I learned a valuable lesson and will always rewind after checking my phone mid-anime
I didn’t think it could be done, but Geoff did it: Cruel Angel’s Thesis finally makes sense. Holy shit. We live in a new era. PS: the last two episodes of NGE are great and essential, despite the budget setbacks. I’m glad Geoff didn’t erase them.
I’d LOVE to see a high school rendition of Tank!. I asked my former band director (who was also the jazz director) who told me it would be fun but it’s Bebop, not Jazz, and it would be tough to work into their lineup at the time.
Yooooo this was sooo intersting! After it shows shinji and rai with the Looking through a window symbolizing the same thing but showing their desire to connect.
From a musical point of view I found that the upbeat and exciting Cruel Angels thesis had me excited and dancing in the show's early episodes and by the end of the series I felt like its cheery nature was mocking my past joy as I now recognized the tragic symbolism and context of the images flashing in front of me
Evangelion was such a complicated show, but so relatable and understandable at the same time
Dont think I didnt notice the Ukranian marching band in the background about 10 minutes in
Originally performed by the japanese coast band, a cruel angels thesis ended up in ukraine after the 3rd impact
22 minute analysis for 1.5 minute song(3.5 if extended). [Reads song title]: Seems appropriate.

Also human soup? you meant Tang right?
No...it's Fanta!😂
@@marywinchester1322 Could also be Lucozade or Sunkist.
Door-Kun only brits would know what that is.
melted orange sorbet?
Interestingly enough, Tang is Chinese and Korean for "soup" whilst I heard that the term itself was coined by the astronaut orange drink.
"And this is the pose that Shinji assumes for the majority of The End of Evangelion" laughing my ass off at that
Netflix 2019: Wow Kaworu! You and Shinji are really close!
Kaworu: Yeah we're boyfriends c:
Netflix 2019: YEAH! Best friends!
Kaworu: ಠ_ಠ
And nothing of value was lost
@@NotAGoodUsername360 why do you say that?
*sigh* this again? The original Japanese script was more ambiguous as to Kaworu's sexuality than Netflix was. The 'I love you' line was a mistranslation from the start.
@@ojiilemon Because Kaworu showed up for like 5 minutes and his relationship with Shinji is absolute garbage writing designed to make the last Angel death seem more impactful than it really is and a desperate attempt to add moral ambiguity to the Angel battles at the last possible second. They have no chemistry and it makes no sense why Shinji would randomly open up to this stranger so quickly and easily other than "because plot."
@@NotAGoodUsername360
So did you miss the part of shinjis character where he will love anyone that shows him basic kindness because he doesn't know how to love himself?
Yeah it's not just because plot, it's literally his core characteristic.
The first couple minutes of this had me realizing so much about how the dots connected, being that I rarely watch lore vids of evangellion due to confusion that it was so mind boggling that I had to turn it off in fear of my soul becoming mush

Telling people not to skip the last two episodes is all I needed to hear to give a like

Im afraid that's wrong the characters are pretty one note really
@@ontos8534 You're only one note.
I love that Netflix has brought Eva to a new generation in North America, but am I the only one that misses "fly me to the moon" playing during the closing credits?
Yes. I also miss hearing the original cast, which Netflix could have (and should have) hired.
@@n3rddegree869 Which is also unfortunate.
So fascinating! Especially the Misato part...Misato is really a sort of older version of Shinji
Yui
But I guess there is also Yue from ATLA who turned into the moon so that kinda fits... I guess?
Good Content Jeff! I am BIG EVANGELION Fan, so yeah this opening is . . . . . unforgettable.
How is this a top ten anime opening at all? All it does is rip off Cory Taihen... smh
really?
Well Cory's us so good, that the ripoff is still awesome
I think he meant "Cory in the House".....
@@Sambulemme I meant Cory in The House, but I've got to admit that I wrote it in a bad way
Hats off to the increadible video, but what I really like about this was the use of the OP and ED song just so subtly placed in the background.
Especially unit 02 when it uses the progressive knife

Once again I am reminded how NGE has more to it than I could ever possibly pick up on.
What a classic.
Depression, my old friend. Here I come again.
And it's literally called umbilical.
anonymousdratini it’s called umbilical. Pretty straightforward
it not, the epidural spot is more below near the pelvis, not the case with Eva umbilical cord
I always wondered what the deeper meaning of this op was, thank you so much!
Nge is my favorite anime of all time ty for doing this
This is the first time I watched a TH-cam channel and I think because of this video I’m gonna subscribe it’s just Perfect
Me after hearing the opening for the first time: "Wow! This anime must be so amazing and light-hearted!"
Me after watching the series and EOE: "I have been permanently scarred.. I will never recover from this..."
This was about 2-3 years ago. This shit fucked me up.
Great analysis. I didn't knew the bit about Gendo and Fuyutski's designs. And in my book your interpretation is spot on
I never thought the opening was a foreshadow of the finale. I love this show even more
Four years later, and 22 minutes is still the most brief analysis I've seen on this particular 90 second music video.
The last two episodes were my favorite parts of the series
Thanks, Geoff. I appreciate you putting your take out there.
Did you watch end of evangelion after you finished?
@@synysterpain I did, it was a masterpiece 🙏🏾
Causing the third impact to tear down the AT Fields of all humanity is one of my favorite metaphors in probably anything ever, since it could also be seen as a great tragedy that causes us to put aside our differences and fears and work together to become better.
Goddam Evangelion is good
Fuck yeah dude. This is the kind of content I LOVE to see. Thank you sooooo much for this analysis dude. It makes me appreciate the anime so much more as well as the team behind making the opening.

i actually got chills watching this, awesome video, this show means so much to me
I just finished watching Evangelion, such a good timing.

I didn’t think it could be done, but Geoff did it: Cruel Angel’s Thesis finally makes sense. Holy shit. We live in a new era.

Cowboy Bebop intro: **exists**
High school marching bands everywhere: “It’s free real estate.”
Tank is overrated and not even that good of an OP
Did a high school band actual do that! Man, they're awsome!!!
Saying anything one of the best anime music composers did is overrated and not good: Aw hell naw.
I’d LOVE to see a high school rendition of Tank!. I asked my former band director (who was also the jazz director) who told me it would be fun but it’s Bebop, not Jazz, and it would be tough to work into their lineup at the time.

Yooooo this was sooo intersting! I've never dove deep into the meaning of every frame of the intro, mostly just rocked out to one of my favorite songs of all time lol, but the way you tied some of the frames together to make a storyline and reveal the foreshadowing of the whole show was just wild and makes me want to watch everything again.
