Some writers this is true for. Some it's not. In this case, I think this opening isn't entirely brainless like some other openings. The song itself is a beautiful rendition which, frankly, could be "sung" by almost the entire cast. TG the anime is terrible, but the openings, particularly the first and last openings, are so on point and perfect for the series it always amazes me.
the best to experience Tokyo ghoul is to watch the op, then read a manga volume, finish it, watch the op again, read another manga volume, do this with all the ops depending on which part of the manga you´re selecting the right op(Unravel first half of Tokyo Ghoul manga, Munou for the second half, Asphyxia for Re) and you will have the perfect Tokyo ghoul

I watched the Anime because of Unravel. I loved Season 1 and while I do think they are heavily flawed, I kinda enjoyed Root A and re. I may give a Manga a try some time in the Future as I have heard that was better.
This series is a gem among gems. The story is unique, the characters strike at your heart, and it came to fruition right as a lot of big names where winding down to an end. Not to mention the continuous use of TK for music, the series is amazing. I cant wait to see the adaptation of the last of the manga.

Nah madhouse would have just dumped it after season 1. They do have a pattern of doing that. But wit studio or ufotable would have made this anime super bonkers
You should do an adapt or die for the manga and anime! This is definitely a story I'll have to reread in one sitting so I don't forget the relevance of characters, because that was a problem I had with the gap between Tokyo Ghoul and it's successor's translation. The manga has a meaningful story with themes of finding one's meaning and place in the world, family, love, all combined with a really distinct artstyle that meshes well with the horror aspect of it. Would be a fun video to do. Hell, I'd do it myself if I had the editing skills. Edit: I do have to mention that I think your bit on Amon's eye color is a bit of a reach; if I recall correctly, the original Tokyo Ghoul had not even reached its climax when this anime was made. Ishida Sui didn't work with Pierrot for season 1, either, so unless Studio Pierrot has some form of clairvoyance I think it's just a coincidence. Still an interesting idea, though.
Ishida planned the entire series out before he wrote it, probably told them, he planned even the amount of chapters and the content of each one. For example chapter 72/143 (tokyo ghoul part 1), the title is "Half Way". Also pretty much every major plot point is foreshadowed earlier, to the point where the fact that a certain characters hand is consistently out of panel for a chapter shows that they are going to lose their hand later on.
Yeah you get to see Amon's future design and an extra chapter with a later Suzuya in Tokyo Ghoul. And even though root A was shit the ending had Hinami's future design in it.
Just a small note, but Tokyo Ghoul: Re didn't even begin when the anime came out, so the Amon thing is probably a coincidence (unless Ishida already knew, and informed the studio, which seems unreasonable to me).
Obviously Ishida knew... It's his story and he very clearly set it up But I'm not sure how much he told the people working on the anime, as they would always cut things out of the story that turn out to be EXTREMELY important later on
TheHeavenlyDao he was paraleling kaneki to amon from the very beginning, it's not surprising that ishida already had in mind how he would make those 2 come to understand one another by making amon experience the ghoul world as a ghoul himself
That Ishida knew it's clear (I mean, ch 72 Half) but doubt she told it, if she did I doubt she would have let them not animate the scanner scene that made for a mayor foreshadowing.
The manga is amazing, basically the best I have ever read, super deep with a ton of layers that you can always learn more or look into. Season 1 was decent, 2 was a joke, 3 has been better with the story but worse animation. IMO of course.
I've read a lot of manga, but TG is definitely in my top 3, you should check out Spirit Circle and Pluto (or 20th Century Boys, most people prefer that manga).

When the drop hits, and all the characters showed up in a cracked screen of Tokyo, I think it was referring to how Kaneki met them, how Kaneki sees them, and if they’re alive or not, as you see in the opening, Mado and Yoshimura aren’t there, probably symbolizing their deaths later in the series, neither did the “Devil Ape” or “Black Dober” appear, in which they also died later in the series, Rize still shows up because her organs are living in Kaneki.
I miss season 1. I wish I could forget about it and watch it again. season 2 was meh and I found out it wasn't canon so idk. I liked Re a lot, (especially the last episode) and I don't care that other people try to tell me its trash because I personally loved it. Tokyo ghoul just has a special place in my heart and I cant figure out why I love it so much.
season 2 is a 'canon' alternate progression in the sense that ishida sui (mangaka) was involved in its directing, and, the title itself was 'alt' ((√A → Root A → Route Alternate/Alternative))
Ashley Yang it’s half half. Only thing they fucked up is when Kaneki joined Aoigri instead of his own group that he formed post Aoigri arc. And in Anime less informations are given and Owl operation looks like a mess. I don’t even know did they put Investigator talk into it
Anime is telling a slightly different story, it doesnt matter that it's not canon, we can let the anime have a different story and not be 100% true to the source material
Good analysis, I'd like to comment on a little aspect that may also count : the wind on the beginning of the OP and the end of it At the start the wind blowing on Kaneki comes from left to right contrasted to how it is for Touka and Rize (I think it might present Kaneki as human but them as ghouls), and at the end of the OP with white haired Kaneki, it's hard to tell which side it's coming from so I'm guessing it means he found some sort of balance between his human side and ghoul side

Tokyo Ghoul is so much more than just a gore fest, it is primarly a character driven story, and a pretty good one at that. However the anime seem to think it's more important to make it a real edgy shounen action show rather than have it be what it's actually about. Also while :re so far has been severely lacking in terms of animation, it is actually quite good in terms of adaptation so far, well atleast from the point of view of a manga reader...
Brandon Roberts edgy is violence and darkness without substance that contrasts it, i can clearly say that the series (manga in particular) isn't edgy as you say it is, it had a tight story and a lot of memorable moments especially in the sequel, :re where the moments and tension just keeps building up though seeing you have a dbz icon made me doubt your claims lol
The anime is starting to ruin the dopeness and significance of the op by using the song to hype up every little moment in the shitty seasons of the anime.(It was cool in season one when they played the the song when Kaneki killed Jason)

Not everything has to be directly to the source material, why cant we let the manga be the manga and the anime be the anime? They can diverge and show a different story in the anime. It allows them to show a different story but with the same characters and general themes. The anime doesnt have to be canon, it's a different story, why not let it be that way? It doesnt always have to follow the manga directly, then people also have the option to read the main story and see a different story in the anime. I hate that argument that it's bad cause it doesnt follow source material, and that simply isnt true. They developed kaneki and other characters very well imo, they just told a told a different story. It's not bad because its different, Its unique because its different.

Rufius Millennium I have rad half of the manga and I think season 1 of Tokyo ghoul was great mabe even better I also think season 2 was still good not as much as the manga but I still kind of like it I didn't like season 3 that much but still okay
The way that the lyrics of Unravel directly reference Kaneki and the world he lives in is another great reason why it's such a good opening for the anime.
While the majority of the the show, even the better by comparison first season, is something i enjoy despite serious flaws, the final episode of the first season was simply fantastic. It went beyond anything the show had put forward to that point by such a margin that many people i knew were convinced to watch just that one episode, sans context and thought it was brilliant.
Season 1 op: amazing Season 2 op: wait what is this? Season 3 op: ehhhhh it's better than last season's I didn't like season 2's op, fight me over it I don't care, I found it boring, especially when compared to unravel😑

That's true, the second season opening was just disappointing and it fell way below my expectations. They should've had a similar op in the second season to signify that it was a continuing series.

Unravel is the only op I have consistently listened to in a good long while, and studio pierrot definitely didn't do the manga justice in any of the seasons
I think the translucent reflections were more likely an artistic choice rather than a mistake since it's on every character. Also Yomo's reflection looks intentionally messed with because his head is pointed straight but in the reflection he's looking over his shoulder showing his red eye.
Notice how when Kaneki is walking towards the right, with his reflection in the glass, the next shot is Touka walking to the left. That could reference them becoming one, their relationship. Or...maybe that was too speculative. Idk. There's so much in this OP that I didn't realize, or observe to the scupulous level. It's a beautiful piece of art.
I don’t think that the creators of the opening thought of all this while making the opening, pretty sure they only thought of 1% of this to be allegorical and for the other 99% to just be straight dramatic LOL. Good correlations though.
The creators likely did put all of this in, bear in mind it's not a two second process to put the op together and Japanese cinema, unlike American cinema, expects the audience to work harder. Which why a lot of American directors want to create films in the European manner. Watch some of the commentaries regarding making of Japanese films and realise how much you missed.

You should do an adapt or die for the manga and anime! This is definitely a story I'll have to reread in one sitting so I don't forget the relevance of characters, because that was a problem I had with the gap between Tokyo Ghoul and it's successor's translation. The manga has a meaningful story with themes of finding one's meaning and place in the world, family, love, all combined with a really distinct artstyle that meshes well with the horror aspect of it. Would be a fun video to do. Hell, I'd do it myself if I had the editing skills.
Edit: I do have to mention that I think your bit on Amon's eye color is a bit of a reach; if I recall correctly, the original Tokyo Ghoul had not even reached its climax when this anime was made. Ishida Sui didn't work with Pierrot for season 1, either, so unless Studio Pierrot has some form of clairvoyance I think it's just a coincidence. Still an interesting idea, though.

Ishida planned the entire series out before he wrote it, probably told them, he planned even the amount of chapters and the content of each one. For example chapter 72/143 (tokyo ghoul part 1), the title is "Half Way". Also pretty much every major plot point is foreshadowed earlier, to the point where the fact that a certain characters hand is consistently out of panel for a chapter shows that they are going to lose their hand later on.
Yeah you get to see Amon's future design and an extra chapter with a later Suzuya in Tokyo Ghoul. And even though root A was shit the ending had Hinami's future design in it.
Just a small note, but Tokyo Ghoul: Re didn't even begin when the anime came out, so the Amon thing is probably a coincidence (unless Ishida already knew, and informed the studio, which seems unreasonable to me).

The manga is amazing, basically the best I have ever read, super deep with a ton of layers that you can always learn more or look into. Season 1 was decent, 2 was a joke, 3 has been better with the story but worse animation. IMO of course.

I've read a lot of manga, but TG is definitely in my top 3, you should check out Spirit Circle and Pluto (or 20th Century Boys, most people prefer that manga).

When the drop hits, and all the characters showed up in a cracked screen of Tokyo, I think it was referring to how Kaneki met them, how Kaneki sees them, and if they’re alive or not, as you see in the opening, Mado and Yoshimura aren’t there, probably symbolizing their deaths later in the series, neither did the “Devil Ape” or “Black Dober” appear, in which they also died later in the series, Rize still shows up because her organs are living in Kaneki.

I miss season 1. I wish I could forget about it and watch it again. season 2 was meh and I found out it wasn't canon so idk. I liked Re a lot, (especially the last episode) and I don't care that other people try to tell me its trash because I personally loved it. Tokyo ghoul just has a special place in my heart and I cant figure out why I love it so much.
season 2 is a 'canon' alternate progression in the sense that ishida sui (mangaka) was involved in its directing, and, the title itself was 'alt' ((√A → Root A → Route Alternate/Alternative))

Anime is telling a slightly different story, it doesnt matter that it's not canon, we can let the anime have a different story and not be 100% true to the source material
Re didn't hit as hard as season 1 did for me and they rushed re and it was poorly done. If they did it right you would've like it more.

Good analysis, I'd like to comment on a little aspect that may also count : the wind on the beginning of the OP and the end of it
At the start the wind blowing on Kaneki comes from left to right contrasted to how it is for Touka and Rize (I think it might present Kaneki as human but them as ghouls), and at the end of the OP with white haired Kaneki, it's hard to tell which side it's coming from so I'm guessing it means he found some sort of balance between his human side and ghoul side

Tokyo Ghoul is so much more than just a gore fest, it is primarly a character driven story, and a pretty good one at that. However the anime seem to think it's more important to make it a real edgy shounen action show rather than have it be what it's actually about. Also while :re so far has been severely lacking in terms of animation, it is actually quite good in terms of adaptation so far, well atleast from the point of view of a manga reader...
Brandon Roberts edgy is violence and darkness without substance that contrasts it, i can clearly say that the series (manga in particular) isn't edgy as you say it is, it had a tight story and a lot of memorable moments especially in the sequel, :re where the moments and tension just keeps building up

The anime is starting to ruin the dopeness and significance of the op by using the song to hype up every little moment in the shitty seasons of the anime.(It was cool in season one when they played the the song when Kaneki killed Jason)

Someone doesnt like the anime. I think they used it really well and it hasn't been used "every fight" they usually close a season with a fight or moment with the song and I love hearing it. They dont overdo it nor does it overstay its welcome, I disagree with you that they overuse it

Not everything has to be directly to the source material, why cant we let the manga be the manga and the anime be the anime? They can diverge and show a different story in the anime. It allows them to show a different story but with the same characters and general themes. The anime doesnt have to be canon, it's a different story, why not let it be that way? It doesnt always have to follow the manga directly, then people also have the option to read the main story and see a different story in the anime. I hate that argument that it's bad cause it doesnt follow source material, and that simply isnt true. They developed kaneki and other characters very well imo, they just told a told a different story. It's not bad because its different, Its unique because its different.

Tokyo Ghoul is my favourite manga. Alongside Berserk. Sadly neither of these stories got proper adaptation.

The way that the lyrics of Unravel directly reference Kaneki and the world he lives in is another great reason why it's such a good opening for the anime.
While the majority of the the show, even the better by comparison first season, is something i enjoy despite serious flaws, the final episode of the first season was simply fantastic. It went beyond anything the show had put forward to that point by such a margin that many people i knew were convinced to watch just that one episode, sans context and thought it was brilliant.

@Who Knows I am aware. However it isn't a song I particularly enjoy, which is much more a me problem than anything else. I can appreciate what it tries to do but it isn't for me, and in my opinion, doesn't suit the shonen genre. This comment was to state my personal opinion. Unravel is the only op I have consistently listened to in a good long while, and studio pierrot definitely didn't do the manga justice in any of the seasons
I think the translucent reflections were more likely an artistic choice rather than a mistake since it's on every character. Also Yomo's reflection looks intentionally messed with because his head is pointed straight but in the reflection he's looking over his shoulder showing his red eye.
Notice how when Kaneki is walking towards the right, with his reflection in the glass, the next shot is Touka walking to the left. That could reference them becoming one, their relationship. Or...maybe that was too speculative. Idk. There's so much in this OP that I didn't realize, or observe to the scupulous level. It's a beautiful piece of art.
I don’t think that the creators of the opening thought of all this while making the opening, pretty sure they only thought of 1% of this to be allegorical and for the other 99% to just be straight dramatic LOL. Good correlations though.

The creators likely did put all of this in, bear in mind it's not a two second process to put the op together and Japanese cinema, unlike American cinema, expects the audience to work harder.
Which why a lot of American directors want to create films in the European manner.
