    I made my stock tank pool 3 years ago. Best decision I've ever made. 700 gallons of fun. I added a solar heater panel for $25 off Amazon and a 1/2 HP $149 SmartPool sand filter from Walmart.

    • @vince8484
      @vince8484 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@aramiter21 I had a friend of mine that has a pool liner company in Pennsylvaniawho piece together a lot of scraps from larger pool liners that he made. It was one big square that I just laid into the pool and that did like a pastry crust all the way around the edge of the pool. I laid it over the edge of the pool and took two lengths of discharge hose for sump pump and used an oscillating cutting tool to make a slit in it. Almost like the pipe insulation where people use for the winter. Where it has a slit in it and if it's over the copper pipes. Anyway I think they're 20 feet long so I just slit to length of it and press the open end along the edge on the top and almost like clamped the liner on to the tank. Then I trim the outside edge of the vinyl liner. I did use duct tape all the way around the outside of the pool just to hold it in place temporarilythen once you fill the pool you can pull the excess lineup because the weight of the water pushes it all the way around the side. Then you can make your final trim. At that point you'll know where you want to make the holes for the liner because before you put the liner in you've already made the holes in the metal. Be careful when you make the slit in the liner and follow how you would do it for a normal pool where you put anexmark smaller than the intended hole so that the washer fits on the liner and on the metal and there will be no leaks.

    My uncle built one of these back in 1987 and never painted it. It's still in his back yard with absolutely no issues. Flex Seal under water for long term will not last. The paint eventually becomes brittle and flakes off. It would be better to get a liner if you're that worried about the looks.

    I added Noodles around the rim of the tank. Really dresses up the look and super easy. Cut a slit down the side of the noodle and it pops right on the rim. They have a tendency to shrink in the sun. I went through two sets of 5 last season.

      Poly pipe that comes in a roll. Slit that and put it over the rim. Spray foam inside to glue it on.
      Sure, you'll need to chip off the excess foam if you get too much in there, but it scrapes off easily.

    if you have problems you have to etch the galvanized first, use 60 grit sandpaper, go over entire surface inside then wipe down with white vinegar before using any product , a good self etching primer is good also before adding a product with color. • @DomicileRealEstate
      @DomicileRealEstate  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did just one coat and let it dry for about 24 hours before adding water. It's held up reasonably well. Some slight peeling if it gets scraped with a net. This pool was used for a season without paint...so the surface might have been a little rougher than a new pool. I'll probably repaint next season and possibly use a primer first or do 2 coats and let it dry a full 48 hours.

      No paint chipping off yet, but the black bottom is new for this season. We specifically went with a Flex Seal rubberized paint because it's supposed to adhere well to galvanized metal (I don't think regular paint would work very well). The paint itself was very thick and it took 24 hours to dry. But just based on the temperature increase, even if we had to redo it every year I think it would be worthwhile.

    We live in west Texas so I don’t think we need to worry about the temperature of the water, but we are going to paint the inside to help with rusting. The other ways I have seen to paint were using spray paint, but they used a lot of cans so it seemed it would be very pricey! I looked up the flex seal you used and wondered if it would be a cheaper option than the spray paint. We are wanting to paint the inside of ours white though. What’s your opinion?

    • @nealslucas
      @nealslucas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tessa Mccormick yes on painting it white to reflect as much heat as possible, or reduce absorption anyway.
      I have a regular above ground pool and have thought about freezing gallon jugs of water in my spare chest freezer and dropping them in the pool then cycling back to the freezer, in order to cool it down some in late summer when it feels like bath water.
      I’m not sure on what type of paint, my guess would be either an exterior or marine grade paint.

    Great video! Would you recommend a flex seal black bottom pool for someone who lives in south Texas were summer temps are in the 100s?

    • @DomicileRealEstate
      @DomicileRealEstate  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's actually a lot more dependent on how much sun you get and nighttime temps. I think for regular 100+ degree days and a sunny location -- the water will get warm enough without painting.

    • @nealslucas
      @nealslucas 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dpcmrmoore as someone who lives in North Texas and has a regular above ground pool, heck no, don’t paint it black, if anything paint it white and reflect as much heat as possible. Unless you want a low cost hot tub through the summer then yes, go with black.
      In August my regular above ground pool with a light blue bottom feels like bath water, not refreshing.
      The ground insulates a ton. If you built an in ground pool and live in dark soil then you want a white bottom cause the ground will heat up, but if you live on rock your ground will likely be cooler and you may want that darker bottom to heat up your water and extend your season.
      My previous house had an in ground pool with a white bottom in black clay soil and it would get uncomfortably warm in late July and August when you need a refreshing dip the most.
      When your nighttime temp is in the 80’s in the summer your water will never cool down lower than the ambient temp, so especially for a smaller body of water with a conductive metal wall expect water temps in the high 80’s to 90’s in late summer.

      @dianamajka1060 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve heard the flex seal ends up peeling... so plus I think for the best stock you’d have to sand the interior of the pool to make anything stick to it..

    • @nealslucas
      @nealslucas 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Diana Majka that’s what I’ve seen too. I would not recommend sanding galvanized metal, that takes away the protective layer that keeps the metal from rusting and you don’t want to breathe in all that zinc, super bad for your lungs. I saw one stock tank pool where they used a tiny pool liner, which I think is the best option if you’re not leaving it bare galvanized which won’t last as long as it should due to the chlorine.
      There are also pond liners in any size in white or black, or I guess you could get a small billboard tarp on Craigslist in white, that would work as well and be thicker and more durable than a pool liner.

    • @DomicileRealEstate
      @DomicileRealEstate  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dianamajka1060 if we were to do it again I think I might use a primer specifically designed for galvanized metal first. That should work a lot better than sanding.

    We sprayed our pool with flex seal about 12 cans and another 10 cans of lacquer and we let it dry over 24 hours... it’s been a month and it’s chipping and rusting under the paint. We wasted a lot of money on spray paint. Now we have to peel this paint and find another product. What’s the difference between spray flex seal and oil paint you used?

    • @DomicileRealEstate
      @DomicileRealEstate  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hadn't heard very good things about the spray-on. The canned paint is much thicker and rubberized, if that makes sense. I didn't do any top coat. One thing I'm thinking that might make a difference is my pool had been used a season without paint -- so the surface was rougher. I've had minimal peeling and no rusting.

      We have a lot of animals where I live, and I've heard so many stories about the inflatable / quickset pools being ruined by deer running into them, birds landing and popping the ring / liner. I wanted something more study.

    he doesn't show the pool being painted. He stands in front of the pool blocking the shot. We don't want to see him , we want to see the pool, filter hookups etc

    A mistake I see all you guys making is no one is bonding their pool- this is very dangerous. Not grounding but actually bonding back to the pump

    I appreciate the video but you're standing in front of it the whole time. Would have been nice to see all your hard work and effort on the pool and not your T-shirt

    Metal is a good conductor of electricity. In a place with a lot of lightening, stay away from this type of pool.
