This post is super old and I may be wrong but for those just finding about this information if you set WOT 32 BTD at the starter speed, while in normal operation motor spins faster than starter speed it will register 2 degrees retarded. Therefore 32 degrees BTD at starter speed translates to 30 degrees BTD during gas operations Ex: at 5,500 RPM or at WOT true degrees will read 30 degrees. Great video tnx!

To find ACTUAL PRECISE Top Dead Center, remove plugs. Find a bolt with the same threads as your plugs. Screw your bolt into the plug hole of #1 cylinder. GENTLY rotate the engine to the point where said bolt blocks the piston's upward stroke(!) c@ (important) 1/2 its rise. (Gently now!) Noe mark that spot. Gently Rotate crank/flywheel/engine in the opposite direction until it once again is contacted by said bolt. Mark that spot. Note which way the flywheel was turning. The piston was traveling up, and you're looking for the top, right? Find the point precisely 1/2 way between your two witness marks. This will be precisely your actual Top Dead Center. Don't overthink the problem. You'll just end up outsmarting yourself. You have just located the physical Top Dead Center of your piston's stroke.
How to know when the piston is at half its rise and therefore how long of a bolt we would need to screw down into the sparkplug hole through the cylinder? Do we rotate the engine by turning the flywheel by hand? And in finding TDC this way, does that alleviate this whole confusing topic of "degrees"....That confused my rookie outboard engine-timing mind a bit.😅
I have a Johnson 1975 65hp has a rough start hard to start and when it does dies in neural runs in full throttle I replaced the fuel pump line goes and bulb spark plugs ignition coils cleaned carburetors

What if I have a basic light where I cannot set it like you did?Where would the pointer read?If I have a rope start could I use a drill to turn the motor over to check?
wish2fish you would have to do it while it's running. on water you set it to top dead center. on land with the ear muffs on the engine or in a tank you set it to before top dead center. And I'm pretty sure all timing lights have a degree setting. what do you mean when you say you can't set yours?
then i think you need to borrow or rent a timing light that allows you to set the correct timing of spark. unless the light is pre set to your specs i wouldn't use it.
newyota1 if you have regular timing light .set it at what ever the specs are.. say of your spec is 30 ° before TDC then 30 is where you set it..it's more simple to do it on the water..have a friend drive the boat.. check it ..if it needs ajustment .1 turn = 1 degree..

(like you did on your very funny video) because the engine needs to be in water,, running fully warmed up, and ticking over at the right speed!,, (out of gear!!!),, the rest is easy,, just hook your timing light up to number 1 spark plug lead,, like you did,, start the engine and read off the degrees of advance,, if it is needing to be reset,, set up to what ever the BOOK TELL'S YOU TO SET IT TOO!!!,, NO MORE AND NO LESS!,,, or better still look at the many U-tube video to learn how to set up the BTDC timing,, and do it soon before your picking up broken piston bits out your engine!,, and please don't start cracking on that,, you have done it this way for years!,,,,, your doing it all wrong,, end of story!
You can do a static full advance timing adjust in your garage. Some say the c.d.I. ads advance at w.open throttle in the water. Who has a test wheel on hand? No one knows for sure !
he roll's around so much to avoid the broken pistons from smacking in the chop's,, doing timing in this way is a guaranteed way of destroying your engine,, look on U-tube for the right way of doing this job!

Every time the cylinders make a revolution your water pump spins. No water in it will destroy the water pump. Always have it hooked to water

The leak will be the float valve not closing.

Just use a straight up timing light. This methods works if you have mech. Timing advance only

With non adjustable lights, if say your cranking speed is 3 0 then you would see 20 not zero if i understand how your light works

my timing light has no settings on it.Just hook it up and pull the trigger.
