    Thank you. This was simply amazing. Two things: 1) I'm an educator, and your ability to break down concepts is fantastic and, 2) I've been adjusting timing for 30 years and not ever really knowing why or what I was actually accomplishing. Again, thank you.

    Stu, you are the most comprehensive resource for boat maintenance on the internet. I've been going back through some of your older videos to familiarize myself for a 17' project boat that I am in the middle of. Also, I like to comment because I know it helps your channel's statistics. I'm still following your new stuff too. Keep on digging, you've got Renko looking good.

    Such a scruffy guy... such amazing explanations :) . Thanks so much! From experience, most mechanics I've used just go with the "close enough" approach when tuning rather than actually going with the actual tolerances set by the manufacturer. This is how to do the job properly.

    These videos are genius for us hobbyists out there. I spent a couple years in a technical/trade school learning my trade, and your teaching skills are definitely on level with a great trade school! Your videos all seem to have you begging for forgiveness when things go differently than planned, which, I think is usually the most instructive part of the topic. If it worked perfect every time, we'd all no you edited too much out.

    Is this a unique design that Tohatsu uses or is this the majority of 2 strokes? I remember you said they have different designs. Would a 2000 merc 50 2 stroke be the same type of design? I don't have a problem now but am very interested after seeing the vid. I love understanding outboards and learning from you!! I grew up fishing my whole life but we were to poor to own a boat. I always watched boats go buy while i was fishing off the banks. So I've never been shown even the basics. Now that im grown up and have one I appreciate the hell outta of em and want to know how to fix it myself. Ive gained a lot of knowledge from you and can't thank you enough!!

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jimbo, by 2000 you might find your Merc is completely computer controlled and can't be adjusted. The computer will adjust the timing to be optimal for all conditions. I didn't get my first boat until I was about 30 but now I love them. Glad the videos are helping you with your boat! :)

    Enjoyed. Easy outs become hard outs when broken. One method of removal is to build up the broken bolt with TIG until there is enough material to put a nut on then weld the nut to the build up.

    • @DangarMarine

      They sure do. Yes, I've tried the 'welding a nut on' technique before. I'm planning to do a full video on stuck and corroded parts soon.

    Terrific tutorial Stu. Rather embarrassed to say I had no idea exactly why timing advanced or when. I just new it did. Thanks for clearing that up!
    Also, your reference to the speed of combustion and the flame front moving down the cylinder reminded me of the many misconceptions about fuel octane out there and its effect on combustion. Another vid idea for ya!

    To add to the broken bolt talk, I ran into a few in my days of working on auto repair jobs and I found that if I mixed half transmission fluid and half acetone it would free up any rusted or corroded bolt or nut, give it a try, you can see it creep up the treads.

    This was a great video to watch. I believe the reason you was having the issues With it being 5° retarded. Instead of 10° Could possibly be The manufacturer's specifications. Because they are sometimes put together on an assembly line. The very changes But you made the best you could do with the throttle linkage. Great job. And to make this planning simple as sometimes. The factory specifications are wrong. For they don't match up with your Linkage.

    Please Help. I have an 1989 Johnson 70HP rebuild by Coastline Marine in Florida. The rebuild cost $3180. (rebuild include: bore the 2 bottom cylinders to the next larger size piston. replace the top piston for cylinder 1, rebuild carbs, new thermostat). The guy told me to check the ignition and timing by a mechanic. I have called every marina in Boston area to have them check the timing for me but no one is willing to work on older motor so I have to check the ignition/timing myself. I have watched TH-cam videos bought 2 manuals to do the timing/ignition myself. When I check the TDC of the motor, new TDC mark that I've found is 2.5" to the left of the factory TDC. Is this correct ? TDC needs to be correct before I can continue forward. Thanks for your help.

    Excellent teacher you are. I have a 2 stroke Yamaha 25 hp with 2 carbs 2008. I bought it new. At idle speed I couldn't get the pop out of it. After watching you on utube I adjusted the carbs in sync, and replaced lower unit leaking seals. Also with your instructions I got the pull rope working on a 9.8 Merc., and if I would have used your water pump drill test I wouldn't have changed the water pump. It was fine. The engine has a warped aluminum plate ,and 2 bad gaskets on the power head which turns the water to steam. I cleared the copper tube, and the rubber lines to the pisser. Parts are on order. Hope to have the motor running next week. Low,low hours on this motor which is worth fixing.

    And what I don't like is they don't have physical marks. They only put a sticker on the top of Most fly wheel with the timing marks. I wish they would engrave them in the file.

    I have a similar problem with an ‘88 110 Johnson but can’t figure it out. The timing sets while running using a light and I can’t get it to idle correctly. When I engage the transmission it dies, so I know the timing is not right. But this motor may be missing some stops. Hello, I got a mercury 3 cyl 60hp from 1987 and was wondering where can I get a repair manual for it, on google found emanualonline, seloc, clymer and tradebit as pages to buy a manual for said engine but I never bought a online manual so was wondering if you could give me a bit of help with it, only manual i ever bought was for a vauxvall nova via ebay and was made from haynes (book), cheers.
    The stator of the engine broke and the distributor had the 4 cables in bad shape wich I fixed the second and about to buy new stator but its been many years since I last heard the engine running and may be a bit out of sync because when removing the distributor to fix the cables had to unscrew the part that connects it to the linkage of the throttle so Im looking for a manual to be sure everything is how should be.

    I'm having an issue and can't find a manual for my book about timing it's a 1989-90 HP etlf all the manual companies keep sending me a 1988 90 HP ETF manual and and the linkage measurements arent the same. 😫I went to do a link and sync and followed the manual and I went from a to b and when I got to c which is the top link next to the flywheel and stator it said to make it 74 mm and there's not 74 mm of linkage there it will barely go to 64 mm. So now I know this is not the right manual and when you look it up on Google every and any website is offering this manual for my 90 etlf made in 1989 and this book is not the correct one. I now have my linkages all messed up can't find an idle speed or full throttle speed because this book can't be the right book so I'm afraid to follow that. And I can't go off of linkage measurements because I've already seen this book is not the one being that c link doesn't even go as long as the service manual calls for. I know this is an unmolested engine so the linkage is not something different or has been replaced please help me I can post a video on my page showing you everything so you can just comment and react or I can video chat with you on whatever platform you desire or we can start out over email I'm trying to get this finished before 4th of July my family would love to see the fireworks on Hartwell lake and I don't want to mess my engine up running it with the idle speed and the full throttle speed all out of spec and neither of the stoppers in the right place. I see that you're more mechanically inclined with outboards than anybody on TH-cam or the entire internet so I figured you knew exactly what idle degree and full throttle degree settings that I should set it with my timing light so I wouldn't have to worry about measuring linkages or if you knew where to get the right manual or if you no at least where I need to start or maybe what I need to do it's like the manual for my motor doesn't exist and all of the companies keep offering the same one for my year model your videos save me a lot I don't know what I would do without your channel please help me out I need to at least get the boat on the water before the summer ends if not then before 4th of July. it runs like a top it just had a rough idle so that's why I was doing a link and sink and I wanted to make sure that my carburetors were opening at full throttle with my full advance linkage on the timing end of things and that's the reason why I was messing with all of this other than that she runs like a dream but I'm not sure now that I've done messed up all the linkages again please help thanks man!

    Really brilliant video thank you. It was five years ago so no idea if I will get a reply but I was going ask a question. My Yamaha 90A manual talks about going on to check the timing while running with a light - fine - but it talks about using a test prop presumably so that the motor is under a known load - is that really needed?

  • @danielthechskid
    @danielthechskid 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    An observation: the timing linkage socket was above the ball instead of on it, maybe this was part of the problem, IE causing binding.
    Also, I worked on an old 1977 140HP Evinrude V4 where the tubing over the timing stator wires had hardened and cracked. This was preventing proper movement of the stator and was flexing the wires all in one spot stressing and breaking them. Some new wire soldered in and new heat shrink tubing fixed it right up.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well spotted on the linkage. This outboard has a lean misfire so I'm going to be going through the carbs soon and then we'll know the true situation with the timing. Good point about those wires. Any time something moves regularly like these timing adjustments there is always the chance of fatigue cracks.

    Why not run a little more neg timing and use high octane fuel as done with auto performance timing? There’s got to be some more power on the table based on a conservative OE timing spec and the higher rpm/timing achievable by definition.

    One note, not timing related: While you cannot drill out an easy-out (or broken drill bit) for the times when you cannot get to the back of the stud, you can grind the easy-out away with ease using a 1/8 th inch Dremel grindstone.

    Hi Stu, While waiting on my merc service manual tried the timing light with it running to see if adjusting the idle timing helped it run better. interesting thing is turning it in or out didn't change anything. If you turn the upper timing arm to the left it makes contact with structure, to the right no problem? weird moving the idle screw doesn't change the timing or RPM? On a car if you move the distributor it makes a huge difference. goo.gl/photos/vvUoQBK2e75qKt8q6

      Timing on these older motors is a tricky one. I'll have to find an older motor to do this type of setup on, but as you say, having the service manual is pretty much essential. It's a shame it isn't something that can be done in the workshop like on this Tohatsu as hanging off the back out on the water in broad daylight makes this type of measurement and adjustment very, very tricky, not to mention a bit unsafe.

    So anything past the triangle towards the left in the video will make the spark plugs fire before the piston reaches TDC? If so does this make it run in reverse? I may have missed you explaining this in the video.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, good question. I should have gone into the affects of timing more, maybe that would make a good follow up video. The motor always turns in the same direction. When the motor is running faster, the spark fires before TDC, but the momentum of the motor keeps the piston travelling up as the explosion is still weak in its early stages. As the piston reaches TDC the pressure is getting stronger and pushes it back down with more force (in the correct direction), peaking at 20 after TDC. If the spark fires too late, the pressure chases the piston down the bore as it travels after TDC and doesn't add much power. If the spark first too early - the timing is too advanced before TDC it can reach a strong enough pressure before the piston reaches TDC and try to push it backwards. This will cause knocking and is bad.

    Great video, Stu. Listen, I’ve got a 25hp 2-stroke 3cyl Evinrude that has me pulling my hair out. Idles great in neutral and in gear but if I give ‘er I get about 10% more power and then it just holds and flutters (but doesn’t stall). If I go back down to idle all is well again. I’m going to re-do idle timing adjustment as this is what Evinrude wants me to do next. Would resetting idle timing in itself help me at higher RPM’s you think?

    What the great explanation of timing adjustment.
    I assume that on simpler older engines with mechanical linkages the advance is kind of fixed by the shape of the the curved ignition plate and the roller riding between marks for the limits of advance and connected to the throttle arm for rpms adjustment. Since the connecting rods are often bent heavy wires this by itself easy the adjustment of the rest of the low and high rpms

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does sounds like that coil or HT lead is bad. You'll get a higher current when the motor is spinning at speed which is why it can jump the gap when it is running, but you might want to think about swapping it out before too much longer.

      Hi Stewart. No, I haven't worked on one of those. As outboards around here get used daily in salt water they rarely last more than 20 years at the very most so we don't see any old outboards at all. the only thing I was wondering is did you test idle speed submerged or just on muffs cause I know from my experience with outboards is that they idle faster on muffs do to the fact that there is no back pressure in exhaust system and most of the time the recommend idle speed is actually for when the boat is in water so submerged that may be why your idle was a little high

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're dead right about the idle. We took the boat out on the water to do some fine tuning as, yes, it should always be done on the water with the boat up to operating temperature as per this video th-cam.com/video/bsHCMJnRY9A/w-d-xo.html

  • @jamesdahmer5027
    @jamesdahmer5027 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there anything that could cause timing to be... "inconsistent"? My outboard will run full throttle but every 3-4 minutes it'll bog right down, and seemingly backfire. Honestly it seems like one of the cylinders stops firing - and then it'll perk right back up again.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably is one of the cylinders losing spark and then firing again and igniting the unburnt fuel.

    • @jamesdahmer5027
      @jamesdahmer5027 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks! yea I replaced the spark plugs and thus far I've had the most reliable performance yet. I couldn't help but notice that the plugs I pulled "looked fine" but were a bit gummy. - the following gets difficult to describe:
      The motor sounds quite scrubby and loud if you will, and - I even pulled out my stethescope for this, I'm almost certain its the piston rings. What confirms this is that when I run the motor in a tub I get a significant residue of oil in the water. It resembles more like grease however than motor oil.
      So - I have ordered a new drive shaft seal to at least rule out that I'm not also leaking gear oil.
      But... I"ve noticed an exhaust port above the waterline, and it too leaks oil much to the same consistency.
      I'm not too sure how to really diagnose this. I had thought that the exhaust came out from behind the prop, but I definitely have a port (perhaps for low rpm's?) just below the motorhead, and it has a stream of oil. I'm guessing this is from oil passing behind the piston rings (although this is a 2 stroke?) Or I have two problems and am also leaking gear oil ontop of a whole host of issues.
      Sorry I know that's a whole lot to digest. I tried to explain it simply but... haha this is far from a simple problem. Either way, thanks very much for your videos Stu! And again greetings from Squamish Canada!
