That's a reasonable response to being a legend when you're still alive.
I think Alan Moore has a deep love of comics history (Silver age especially), but he felt that readers should grow beyond the "Comics = Superheroes" mentality. He deconstructed the idea of superheroes in Miracleman and Watchmen as his final word on them but became annoyed that the readership refused to "grow up" and in fact wanted more superhero stories because he'd brought them to a wider audience.
Worse, he had to go back to working on superhero books like Youngblood because that's where the money lay. Add that to his misfortunes with Hollywood, you can see why he'd be bitter. Doesn't justify his ranting about all modern comics though.

Superman and the Jumper, Crisis on Infinite Earths, The Death of Superman, Whatever Happened To Truth, Justice, And The American Way, JLA/Avengers. Among many, many others.
With all due respect to Alan Moore, the readership did in fact "grow up". And so did the comics themselves. Comics can now have characters openly be drug addicts (hi Roy), can have their loved ones die (hi... pretty much everyone) and can explore grief.
The readership grew up, but they stayed with superhero comics because they touched on something special.
Pairing up Rob Liefeld with a writer of Alan Moore's caliber really exposes his laziness as an artist. They made a sourcebook for this event that included extracts from Moore's script, which shows that the scene at the end of the alpha issue was supposed to be this massive gathering of superheroes coming to watch the trial, including all the members of Youngblood, Team Youngblood, and many of the original characters created for this event.
And Liefeld draws the whole crowd as a faceless mass with only a handful of characters spotlighted through some close-up panels.
Seriously Alan Moore is clearly trying to make a deep and great story and play with big ideas
While Liefeld keeps failing him and does his usual shit. The story deserves a better artist

If I’m gonna be honest, I personally think if they had a few more pages to explain some of the plot holes (like how Toby knew it was the book that was the main cause of this stuff), I think it’d work pretty well.
Is it's Liefeld's fault though? Everyone knows he's not a great artist. Moore knew it. It's considered the responsibility of the writer to play to the artist's strengths by writing something they're good at. He knew he was stuck with a terrible artist and still wrote something beyond Liefeld's skills. Just a typical 90s failure on everyone's part.

To be fair, ANY Alan Moore written series is still better than a rob lifeleld written series in my eyes regardless of whatever artist works on it, even if it does help it slightly.
(And if I may... an Alan moore/Todd McFarlane collaboration would be absolutely amazing!)

And then handing it over to Michael Bay who will discard half the script and make the film 50% half dressed ladies, 25% muscle massed macho men, 25% the Rebels slaughter an entire army of Sith, and 100% EXPLOSIONS!!!

You know Alan Moore is good when he can turn the setting of Young Blood into an okay story.
"Under the Early 90s Image Style the superhero genre had devolved into bad action movies" is a hell of a message for a book with the word "Youngblood" on the title.
Which is one of the many reasons you gotta respect Moore even if his body of work is uneven. The dude basically tricked Liefeld into illustrating a diss track on himself.

its a super cool idea - a villain "re-writes" reality so he's a hero. but the trial framing really doesnt work. Good try, though, Mr. Moore.
It's not a bad idea. The reality altering book I mean. Hell, I think DC it did for the Arrowverse's Elseworlds crossover with Dr Destiny using it as the main villain...
@@johnnygyro2295 In his series Jack of Fables, Bill Willingham actually uses an idea like this really well with the character of Kevin Thorn, the personification of story-telling. Because Kevin is the personification of story-telling, he's an author, with a book he writes stories in. What Kevin writes in this book becomes real. This is shown off in a scene where drives away one of the Page Sisters, by writing a bunch of starving jackals into existence, which chase her out of his house.

A She-Hulk mini-series, “Law and Disorder and Disorderly Conduct, actually did that same concept as a mystery regarding a file called “the Blue File” in which a villain Nighteater sacrificed a whole town to rewrite the Marvel universe to make him into the hero Nightwatch, but a survivor of the incident filed a lawsuit.
I remember a Marvel comic where they did something like that to Nightwatch. The character who was a blatant Spawn ripoff.
I find these superheroes fighting over the power of the retcon highly amusing.
Also, horay for the return of the storyline.

I think some of Moore's resentment for the comic industry (apart form being an anarchist and having a history of being screwed over by said industry) is that he recognizes his involvement in shaping, not only the industry but also some of the more toxic elements of the community. I can't help but feel there's an element of personal shame in that he recognizes his involvement in a buisnuis he ends up disagreeing so much with. Otherwise reading what he writes outside comics or watching some of his lectures/ interviews, Alan seems like a reflective and kind man who dosen't want to harm anyone.
He also seems to have an "everything modern sucks" attitude about things, for his League of Extraordinary Gentlemen I never went beyond Black Dossier because I've read that Century is allegedly rife with that.
@@det.bullock4461 Alan Moore is stuck in the 20th century, and because of this bias everything modern is not worth it in his eyes except some books by some modern British authors (gotta get that validation). Regarding the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Warren Ellis is doing his own version of them but this time they are in the 21st century and the book is called Injection. However, the problem with Injection is that it comes off as a TED talk in comic book form.
Also doesn't help that his arguably most famous work is Watchmen, and arguably the most famous character in Watchmen is Rorschach, a character he is disgusted with (cause honestly Rory is disgusting)

Y'know, the idea of a book which contains every story ever written and can even alter the universe and time if rewritten actually sounds pretty good as a sci-fi/fantasy concept.
I think personally that the Judgement day may not be the apocalypse meaning, but an actual day of judgement. Both legal judgement and the judgement of the readers.
Reading further into the meaning of things - which you REALLY have to do with Alan Moore - The Book is the canon. People come along and retcon things, change the world to their liking. And in the end, it comes down to a random person who picks it up and starts reading; like any member of the comic buying audience. It’s up to the reader to *Judge* whether or not the world, as it currently is, is worth preserving, or if it should be changed, or even just abandoned. Throw away the book, keep reading it, or try to make your own changes.
Of course, this doesn’t automatically mean it’s an interesting story, well written, well drawn, whatever. Just that it may well have more depth than you may have considered.
Everything means *something* with Moore. The trick is to figure out *what*.
After watching the vol 1 compilation, the difference is astounding. Quality or not, you can see actual CHARACTERS engaging in a genuine PLOT. Not like vol 1, where heroes went places, fought things, and clenched angrily as events happened at them.

As for his dislike of the focus of superhero comics... From what *very* little I know, he's not as bad about it as Garth "The Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe because I hate superheroes and have to spread my vitriol everywhere" Ennis.

Glad I'm the only one who dislikes Garth Ennis's hate-boner for superheroes. The guy tends to shove the message that the army are the only true heroes, forgetting that Captain America was quite popular with troops during WW2.
Garth Ennis is just Alan Moore without his redeeming qualities.

I think this story is still somewhat canon in the new Youngblood series that started in 2017; the new team has a new hero using the Sentinel identity who alludes to the crimes of the original

Is it weird that I'm completely okay with Lewis playing multiple characters, but with Will it feels odd? Also, curse the temporal differences between the universes, they make us wait for storylines longer.

I kinda have the same feeling, and I think it's because it just seems like it's the Jaeris again compared to the Blue Knight. There wasn't anything aside from the hair and facial hair that really separates the two, since it's pretty much the same voice. With other characters, like the King that Linkara had fought for the Contest, there was at least a distinct outfit and voice that gave the character its own identity.

I took this as a meta commentary on regards to comic books changing from one writer's hands to another and effecting continuity with ret-cons.
It's definitely a neat idea to run with for a story.
I can understand Moore’s bitterness with wanting to expand his horizons to other genres within the medium and getting frustrated when no opportunities to do so present themselves to him
But the one thing he shouldn’t have done was take his frustrations out on his own readers. People can’t help liking what they like and it’s not their fault that entertainment businesses cash in on what’s popular. It’s just attacking the wrong people out of pure bitterness.

Was looking for anyone else who commented on this. Also, it doesn't read "We have seen its harbinger. It is the slayer of doom", it reads "We have seen its harbinger. It is the sayer of doom." as in a doom-sayer, a person saying everthing will go wrong or end.
You also missed, "The Contest Isn't Over. Stuff Just Gets In The Way." Although that might be there more as a joke/reference about the delays of that storyline.

Always fascinated by this series it is clearly a prelude to Moores work in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and ABC comics.
It's very odd hearing an actual storyline connected to Youngblood.
3:36: so basically Alan Moore was writing new 52 superman before new 52 happened, got it
Personally, I think they should have used the book to bring Riptide back to life after Sentinel's role in her murder discovered! Sentinel would still be charged for selfishly altering reality! That way, Riptide wouldn't have been fridged & you could argue she was trying to expose Sentinel all along, ultimately succeeding as her murder trial ended up exposing Sentinel's crimes! They could also use the book to have Youngblood reinstated by the government after Graves was exposed for infecting Chapel with HIV (though it turned out that Graves' claims the government was behind the AIDs epidemic was a lie to make the government seem more powerful or that it was a retcon made by Sentinel as part of his grim & gritty Era! Or have it turn out Graves was lying about both the government involvement & Chapel being infected, which would explain why Chapel seemed fine after getting his injections instead of becoming sick, that it was all a form of psychological manipulation that backfired leading to Chapel's suicide (alternatively they could explain that Sentinel was behind Chapel's actions & maybe even Graves' villainous ways)!

They shoulda just called him a shapeshifter. The flashback-only blue furry version of him doesn't even have the same build and proportions as the modern-day version!

Also, FINALLY A STORYLINE UPDATE! I guess I'll have to postpone my Pilo victory celebration...
Random thought for this story idea: make it longer. Let me explain. Have a series of seemingly unrelated stories, one offs and the like, all featuring that book. It's not always obvious, sometimes it's just a small background thing sitting on a desk, other times it's a central part of the plot. Then, finally, we reach the present, with a variation on the story we've already got: a hero using it to make themselves greater. That way the flashbacks come off less like 'Here's a random bit with the book" and more "Here's the answers to the scavenger hunt".
BlueStar that's pretty much Avengers Infinity War but instead of a hero it's a ten ft tall purple idiot who thinks halving the population is a good idea.
Intriguing bit of storyline, especially with the EXTREME portion in the episode. Continues the Contest storyline while also setting up possible others things to come, especially with Halloween right around the corner. And if this is going where it implies, great way to keep up Vyce's threat without diminishing the last conflict with him by bringing him back too soon.

@@daelen.cclark A wrestling promoter/manager/booker who had a tendency to rant about how wrestling sucks nowadays.
He also has a hate boner for Vince Russo.
That's actually not far off.
My problem with Moore is that he has this tendency to throw other creators under the bus (creators he'll frequently admit to knowing squat about) for very hypocritical things. Then when this hypocrisy is pointed out to him, he moves the goalposts, followed by more criticism rooted hypocrisy of creators he knows squat about.
It wouldn't be that big a deal, but considering A. comics are essentially a medium thats been dying a slow death readership-wise for several decades, B. Moore is one of, if not THE most influential creators left in the medium so his voice (when he uses it) carries a lot of weight with fans and talent, C. the industry has a fairly toxic fan base that worships favorite creators and can be easily riled up by cults of personality types, with a penchant for harassment campaigns once they've been riled up against a "target," and D. the medium today is pretty much just as hard to make a living in as it was when Moore broke in, with many creators barely scraping by with their blood, sweat, tears, and a deep love for comics and who don't need a cantankerous industry megastar throwing them under the bus on a whim - it then really pisses me off when he decides to do an interview where he dumps on half the industry because he's a bitter, old hypocrite who constantly needs his ego stroked by interviewers that practically felate him in between questions.
That said - I thought judgement day was alright. Not as good as Supreme, but alright. Its not his worst work; it's not even his worst Image work (see: his WildCats run, it's fairly bland and mediocre superhero fair, feels almost like he's trying to be some kind of Ellis/Morrison hybrid and failing at it).
His most well known work, Watchmen, is in effect an artistically crafted well written tantrum he threw over Ditko's objectivsm and the reality that the superhero was a closer analogue for that philosophy then his own. His whole career is throwing other people under the bus and acting like a first year communications major despite his age.
@@Mister-Thirteen I don't know if I agree that Objectivism is (broadly speaking) a good analogue for superheroes since the average superhero character is generally rooted in some kind of altruistic motivation, and altruism in any form is deeply at odds with Rand's philosophy (from what I've read, altruism is considered evil, essentially, in her philosophy) but I can see what you're saying about Moore essentially looking at the more Objectivist-influenced Charlton characters (via Ditko) being effective heroes in their universe and him making Watchmen a giant "Nuh-uh!"
@@dmore454 Altruism doesn't exist in Rand's outlook, its a myth, a noble lie. But that doesn't make ethical and the ideals they expose less valuable, if anything it makes them all the more important because they are in effect humanity trying to enforce its will upon a reality void of the justice we demand of it.
Superheros are embodied ideals and the Ur-fathers of the genre are very, very objectivist in their outlook. The Phantom, The Shadow, The green Hornet etc.
Now #notallsuperheros but Moore was clearly aware of this because he choose to target the hardcore objectivist in the medium and created parodies of his work.
@@Mister-Thirteen we're going to have to agree to disagree here; for me, the influential superheroes of the past 50 years in the medium have some kind of "for the greater good" approach to their motivation, which is something Rand railed against vehemently. Whatever influence the mid-Golden Age heroes to now take from the Ur-fathers has little if anything to do with possibly Objectivist elements to their characters and moreso somewhat superficial elements like wearing a mask, colorful nom-de-guerre, etc.
Just look at maybe the most popular and influential superhero of the past decade - Iron Man. He's a billionaire industrialist (Rand's favorite kind of protagonist) and what does he do? He moves his company out of the highly profitable arms industry (besides supplying SHIELD, a multi-national police and peace-keeping task force, with tech, although he stops doing even that later on), which more recent retellings makes a note of how this upsets the shareholders quite a bit and financially weakens the company. He gives up on the idea of profit for profit's sake (very much against her philosophy that espouses accumulating profit is the greatest good and most noble thing to do) in order to use his company's resources to make the world a better place according to a moral code that doesn't factor profit into his motivation other than a resource and necessary evil his company needs for his other, altruistic endeavors.
I feel I'm pretty safe in the assumption that if Rand wrote Iron Man, he would never have moved Stark Industries out of the arms industry, and if anything would lobby to be able to sell his weapons to whomever he wished, claiming all fault for evil acts done with his weapons lies with the individuals who used them; he's not personally responsible,for anything. I also don't see him bankrolling the non-profit venture of the Avengers or giving out stipends to other members, arguing if he can be a superhero and make a living that pays his expenses, so can the rest of the members.
Then you have Spider-man, and his mantra of "with great power comes great responsibility," which has in turn inspired more than half the Marvel Universe's heroes; it's a mantra tinged with the sentiment that because he has the ability to help the people around him, he has a duty to do so, quite frequently at great personal cost and sacrifice to his relationships and ability to support himself. He attempts to use his powers for personal profit exactly once, fails, and never really does so again, partly because he feels his powers would be wasted that way in terms of benefiting society.
Again, I feel safe saying that a more authentically Randian version of Spider-man doesn't give up on trying to use his powers to make a good living in showbiz and goes on to probably become a main-eventer in the UCWF or something instead of stopping crime.
I would say these two heroes are much more typical and influential on the genre than the medium's Ur-fathers and have been for a longer stretch of time.
@@karanlalla9854 he did several interviews around the time Before Watchmen was announced where he bashed everyone who was working on it pretty hard after admitting he knew next to nothing about any of them or their personal situations, besides crapping on everyone in the industry in general in those interviews. He also accused Dave Gibbons of being a DC stooge and double agent trying to manipulate him. And then moved the goalposts on his use of existing characters in his previous work-for-hire stories, League of Extraordinary Gentleman and Watchmen after basically saying that any creator that uses characters they didn't create is a hack and opportunist vulture utilizing other people's creativity.
I get him being angry at the time, and if he wants to dump on DC as a company, that's fair. But a lot of these guys he bashed usually have to take every gig that comes their way just to put food on the table and a roof over their heads, so his feeling that they should just turn down gigs that violate his personal philosophy of ethics and ceative works ownership is incredibly naive, hypocritical, mean spirited, and unhelpful.

My one gripe with Moore is something Linkara points out. He goes on about originality and HIS characters when a lot of his most noted works are actually based on existing characters:

Watchman - based on Charlton characters
League of Extraordinary Gentleman - classic adventure story characters
Marvelman - A dark revival of an old comic created when UK ran out of Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) comics to reprint
Heck, Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow is one of the greatest Superman stories of all time.
He's extraordinarily talented and he took all of those characters into new directions, but doesn't seem like the type of guy I'd ever want to spend any time talking to, either.
The last part is the point though. He don't have a problem with people using old character, he has a problem with creators having to use them to tell basically the same stories over and over.

I remember when Moore's attitude toward movie adaptations was basically, 'They pay me, and go off and make whatever, and my book is still there, and it's fine,' but I genuinely think the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie broke him. I had read the first volume a few years before the adaptation, and that movie nearly broke me.
I...wow i honestly can't blame him at all that movie was HORRIBLE.
It doesn't help that outside of V the other adaptations are mixed at best (i personally like Watchmen but it does have flaws and people ARE split on wether it is good or not)

Comparatively, this was the Citizen Kane of Youngblood. I cared more about the characters in one 3-issue miniseries than I did at any other time.
Of course, this does fit under the trope of "Damned by Faint Praise" since it's Youngblood.
I can't argue with Moore being a genius at this medium. Not just words, but every frame of the comic is meticulously planned out to achieve the effect he wants. He is great at that.
That said, the only reason Watchmen was as original as it is was is because he wanted the Charleston heroes and DC said no because they had plans so he just made pastiches of them. He's complained about originality while frequently using public domain characters. And he's extremely spiteful (the James Bond expy he had in LoEG as a middle finger to the movie was just petty). And his ego makes him think all his ideas are good (Lost Girls is disturbing and gross).

Speaking of Team Youngblood, I actually decided to do some research on that book for the next time you actually covered it. And it has more issues than the first two volumes of Youngblood combined! Not counting Issue 0, the first volume had 10 issues while the second volume had 11 issues. Team Youngblood? It had 22 issues. You heard me right. The spin-off had more issues than the main book!

Ah yes Alan Moore or as I described him to my non comic reading friend "a man I'd love to invite into my home, have tea with and calmly discuss politics with... behind bullet proof glass and extraction team ready on standby". I have great respect for as a writer though I wish he'd actually try and be an active consultant on adaptations of his books Instead of angrily yelling at people just trying to make a good movie. I must say I'm excited to see what Alan Moore could add to the Youngblood mythos.

I think the idea of a "Proactive" team of superheroes could work. Not in the YoungBlood way, but with something that Hawkeye talked about in Avengers #502 (Avengers: Disassembled). He was complaining about how super hero teams never actually follow up on anything, they move from one crisis to the next and that leaves bad guys to recover after beatdowns. A good "Proactive" super hero team would be a group that actively fixes up loose ends that are left open at the end of other teams arks. Like actually making sure the Ultron AI was destroyed alongside his physical body rather than assuming it was
The issue is that this simply cannot work thanks to the nature of comics in of itself. The story is never supposed to end, there always has to be a next story which isn't allowed to change the status-quo. Because, lets be real here for a second: Lets say super heroes and -villians appear and start to pull off stuff like in the comics and the world starts to react to them realistically. Multiple massive changes would occur because of this, esspecially in the legal area.
Villians couldn't get off easy anymore after some have killed hundreds of people for example because laws would be changed which also maybe even include harsher punishments. Death penalty could legit get back on the table in that case for example if some super-powered criminal individuals come around that cannot be put behind bars with the current level of technology thus leaving no other option. This would only be just one of many, many, many dilemmas caused by this if the world these stories take place in would actually react to many years of super-villiany happining in it.
Another issue with this is that, well, the villians reputation getting blown out of proportion thanks to the sliding time-scale. No joke, people have already made the math and found out that, for example, jokers accomplishments (Which includes his mass-murder, jail-breaks, etc.) make no sense if we take time into account. The stuff he did would span multiple decade if we take time into account which he couldn't have. Most of his plans took months and years, including his times in prison, Arkham plus the goverment refusing to actually step in (Which is another discussion but that's another story).
To make a long story short (Too late):
Pro-active super-hero teams cannot work because the world super heroes live in refuse flatout to grow with its characters, thus making it impossible to make steps forward.

@@kingsadvisor18 Yeah... No. I respectfully disagree. Invincible, atleast in my eyes, is everything wrong with modern super hero comics in a nutshell.
Way too much gore, next to no substance, does everything just for shock value, boring characters and the things it does good becomes buried underneath its giant flaws. It feels a lot like a modern version of liefelds storys in my opinion. All flash and nothing behind it.
But i thought the Youngblood team already faced against prophets and disciples, the biblical equivalent of armageddon

I always felt it was more him ranting and dismissing something he knows almost next to nothing about it in a shallow attempt to label all millennial pop culture as empty and repetitive. In other words, he let his anger take precedence over telling a good story, and the book suffered for it.

Way I understand it, Rorshach was supposed to be Alan Moore lampooning "crazy American" ideas of objective morality. It was a dig at Steve Ditko's philosophies, which is why Rorschach dresses the same as The Question and Mr. A, two of Ditko's more prominently objectivist characters. Rorschach was supposed to be the crazy loner who would rather sink the ship than keep it afloat with a lie.
So it fills me with glee knowing that Rorschach is... well, pretty much everyone's favorite and most relatable character in the whole story.

Meant to post this when this video came out, but really hoping that the Blue Knight of Titan doesn't turn out to be a Knight Templar/Well-Intentioned Extremist (his dialogue smacks of that sort of thing, with the whole, "Evil needs to be stopped no matter what others think," type of talk - would be really awesome if it turned out he was legit a good hero though, but my alarms are tingling at the exchange).
I'd say this is the most interesting Youngblood book. The blame for its failings goes mainly with Liefeld's involvement though. His art, his characters. Moore did the best he could, and he did a great job with what he's given, but a sandwich with poop in its recipe will always taste shitty.

33:18 fridging is a consistent problem with Moore, you pretty much have to be Wonder Woman or Lois Lane to make it out in one of his stories. Not to mention the Killing Joke being deservedly criticized as one of the biggest examples of that awful trope.
