  • It was a long time ago since I drove a car that made as much impression on me as the Porsche 718 Cayman. Just a couple of weeks ago I claimed that the base Carrera did not get as much attention as it deserved. What word to use now? I the video, I enter the debate about the 4 cylinder engine in the 718 range with only one question. I Address the beautiful color Miami Blue and what it relates to in Sweden.

    I agree with you about the sound of the 718. My wife and I, former owners of an air-cooled 911 Carrera 4 Targa (964), recently test drove a 718 base Cayman. We both were highly impressed with the acceleration, braking and cornering. I thought especially, that the 718 Cayman had a great growling engine sound even without the Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE) option.
    It sounds different, for sure, but it sounds just fine.

    You can actually get an "S" with black painted brake calipers but you have to pay extra to do it. Here in the USA it's about a $500 option. And I agree with you that it looks better with black calipers with that Miami Blue (and with my own car which is Agate Grey Metallic). The 718 Cayman is a fantastic sports car and anyone who's upset about the loss of 2 cylinders should really give it a test drive before deciding to hate it!

    I own a 2018 Cayman base and agree the sound is not perfect. So instead of ordering the Porsche sport exhaust, I installed a Fabspeed cat back system. Now my car sounds like a small block V8, and I couldn’t be happier. Porsche missed it with the sound, but for a little less money, you have a car that turns heads when they hear it coming. And don’t base its sound quality on TH-cam videos. It sounds a lot better in person.

      Fuddy Duddy i know it’s popular when a person criticizes a car that people like to think that person is poor and can’t begin to afford one, but I own one, sweetheart. A 2019 base Cayman in GT silver - my husband wanted one. I like everything about it, except for the sound. I bought a 2018 BMW LCI M2 and a 2018 base carrera. We are in our early 50’s and have made our money and are now enjoying it and the cars. Cheers.

    I think what you presented here is a fair unbiased and honest review of the 718. I think you showcase and highlight the 718 in a positive light. Every last time I am almost sold on the 718 as a concept, as I am not opposed to a 4cyl. Porsche sports car, I listen to that screaming, altogether unique wail of the 981 Cayman flat 6 and I just am pulled back into looking for a CPO or slightly used 981. It just was such a part of the emotional aspect of the Porsche owning experience; I wonder if its something that can be separated. Subbed btw! great channel and car perspective.

    You're right about the base models being not given the praise they deserve. Had a 991.2 GT3RS owner drive my gen 2 997 Carrera recently, a 5 plus hours trip. This guy has had many different Porsche's from a 1973 2.4S to a 930 Turbo, to the last 3 versions of the GT3RS. He was hugely impressed by the comfort, the steering, the engine and PDK gear box in mine. A 718 Boxster passed me a few days ago and it made an impressive noise. I certainly wouldn't complain about the engines in the 718. By the way, you're correct about the colour, the Miami Blue is stunning. Great video, thanks.

      have you viewed my Carrera 4s (my very first review)? In this video, I explain that it is a millisecond of lag but both in the 911 and 718 base model it is not worth mentioning. For me, it is a very tuff call between the 911 and 718...

    Some real nice video footage here. Well done. I agree the 718 Cayman looks the best out of the Cayman bunch, but personally I prefer (and own) a six-cylinder NA Cayman 987 Gen 2. Thanks for an excellent video. I enjoy your enthusiasm and the production quality. You are absolutely right about alcantara - so many people seem to love this cheap synthetic fabric that looks terrible after a year of skin oils and perspiration. And I'll take the turbo acceleration of the 718, and its muscular rumble, over the sound of the 981 any day!

    Great video that mirrors my thoughts on the topic. I’m a 718 owner and have been having an absolute blast in this car. Drove like a champ all winter in the snow and has already been my chariot on several road trips. What a great car to travel in, especially on winding B roads! Personally I love the sound of the engine, but I’m also of the mindset that the benefits of the new engine outweigh the soundtrack of the old. You get more of the Cayman more of the time than you ever did on the older model. It will be a difficult proposition for me to justify purchasing a 911 next time around. It’s less a question of “which is better” and more of “do I love the 911 so much that I would pay $30k more” and I don’t know if I do or not at this juncture. Additional tests are necessary. Keep up the great work; love your channel!

      @@stealthhtm23 I will caveat that any depth of snow beyond 4 inches is going to give you problems in any low riding vehicle due to lack of wheel and chassis clearance but I ran Michelin Alpin PA4s if I remember correctly and she did very well in the snow! I was dailying her in northern NY which definitely gets some of the worst snow storms in the US.

      Then you should ask yourself wish options that are important for you since the GTS is more or less an option pack.
      I would compare the base model and the GTS and then truly ask your self how you are planning to use the car. Track days? Daily Driver? Weekend driving?

    Alcantara will not wear out like that. I change all my steering wheels to Alcantara because I live in Las Vegas and leather wheels get too hot.
    I never wear gloves. My Huracan Spyder I put 14,000 miles on last year without gloves, not a mark and have never cleaned it.
    I think everyone that says that doesn’t daily drive with an Alcantara wheel. JMO

      Ian C I have been a passenger in one, it is a fantastic car but the turbo lag is bad but the sound... the sound is just a dreary din, no matter the revs or how it’s driven. If Some people like it that’s fine, but I don’t just dislike it I actually hate it. It makes the car sound cheap to me.

    • @ianc8999
      @ianc8999 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mockle07 Best handling Cayman ever, and I have driven them all. Turbo lag is really only there when people don't know how to drive :) in sport+ the turbo is spooled up and ready so if you keep the car in the (fairly wide) torque band, there's really no issue when you are pressing on - only poor gear selection and lack of anticipation is to blame. Engine sound is subjective, even if we do disagree. Its not F6 "fruity" but its raw and aggressive.

    • @Mockle07
      @Mockle07 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ian C But you don’t just drive a car in “pressing on” mode. Around town or simply accelerating to overtake it was terrible. You can make all the excuses you like, but a modern car should not behave like that. From what I can tell its handling is incredible, and I trust the guy that was driving’s opinion; he said it handles almost as well as his GT4 and it felt at least as fast. But we were wincing at the noise it made the whole time, it’s like a droning diesel. Thankfully he sold it and bought another GT4. You’re right though, noise and looks (and even handling to a degree) are subjective; I am glad you like it.

    • @JankoLind
      @JankoLind  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As I always say, there is a Porsche for everybody. I love drivning the Cayman and the sound, for me, is great. Just like Ian C put it, and I agree, It is not as fruity as the F6 but it is raw and aggressive.
      Besides, I am listning to different typ of music and I can appreciate all of them...

    Black wheels are so 1995 - the 4 cylinder engine is Rubbish - it having a Turbo makes it Even More Rubbish - painting the side intakes on a Miami Blue car makes it look like a hairdresser's ride - why, for the love of God, would someone drive this when you can drive a 2015 Carrera S with a Manual for the same money ? I find the styling incomplete - the rear window is convex both north south and east west instead of flat and the whole back of the car is way too rounded and curved like the front (which way is forward iykwim ;P ? ). The rear tail lights travel up the rear fenders too much - Porsche needs to redesign the whole back end of this car...... and pronto .
