The last comments are spot on. Until I started tracking this car, the only thing that really excited me was how it looked. After tracking it, well, I have to tell you, the car is astoundingly quick in the curves and the PDK shifting is absolutely sublime. Carreras really have to work hard to stay with this perfectly balanced car. When you drive this car home from your first track experience, you will have an epiphany - I promise. Tracking this car legitimizes everything that Porsche stands for in an automobile.
I completely agree. Made me seem like a better drive than I actually am lol. Porsche perfected this mid engine light weight car. So easy to drive and takes the corners so easily which allows you to put the power down easier on the straights
Agreed. The Porsche driving experiences at Silverstone, either bring your own car or borrow one show how capable this car is. The drive home makes you want the tap the dash and tell it "good boy".
Coming back to this in 2020, I really like this car. I loved what Sam did from the color to the STG decals on it. One of his best cars he ever owned in my opinion.
Sam, I had a Cayman S for two years and your comment on the lack of emotional attachment is right on. I never got into the spirit of the car even though it was fabulous to drive. I am just outside of NYC and I never, like you, thought I was able to really take advantage of the full capabilities of the car. I did have the attachment to the S2000 I owned, but not the Cayman. Keep the great videos coming. KO
I have a 981 CGTS with 18K miles. YES - the passenger seatbelt buckle bounces between the door and the seat so i also click it in when someone isn't in the car. While I like my engine more than the new one, the car does everything absolutely great. Grocery getter, highway cruiser, or mountain roads. You definitely need to thrash it more. It carries so much speed into and through corners, you'll be keeping up with the guys on sport bikes. Especially with the gobs of low end torque you have. As for emotional connection - I also agree. Love my car. But then I took a drive in an F430. Oh boy. Enjoy your 360!
The Cayman is a great looking car and the performance is superb for a turbo charged engine.Yeah get it on track or those country roads, then it will show it’s spirit and soul.
Can't go wrong with Porsche. Their are a whole lot Porsche videos. With drivers Brian Redman, Derek Bell and Hans Stuck who all three have had very successful careers driving for Porsche racing. Those gentleman are a big reason why I'm such a big Porsche fan.
Now that's a good review , good filming , precise talk through ,and interesting if you was thinking of getting a 718 it's a great point of reference . Well done 👍
The Cayman S definitely has two characters, both of which are damn good! I have a 3.4 S and yes on a nice 80mph run it gets 28mpg but show it a few corners and it comes alive 😀
I think you have hit the nail right on the head, the 718 is a better handling car then you have really experienced. Still I would rather have the previous gen Cayman S 6 cylinder with PDK.
Why would you cover the Clay (a $3000 option) with green wrap?? P.S. my [Macan] GTS has 30k miles, driven it from FL to Breck Colorado and stayed in mountains for a year and there are zero noises or loose parts. Going for 718 gts next.
Two amazing things about this vid. Agree with other posts that the editing and production quality is top notch. Absolutely amazing. Also amazing that it wasn't raining during half of the UK sourced shots!
Would love to see a cost display video of the costs included with owning it and driving 7000 miles / 6 month period. Like, insurance, fuel, maintenance and such. Keep it up :)
If you’re not going to track it but want to enjoy the “sports car” part, you’ll do just fine with a base model without sport chrono (all models have normal and sport modes), and get some comfort options. The wrap looks nice but the metallics look better (though I do like lava orange and Miami blue). I have a 718 Boxster S (used to have a wonderful 987 Cayman). The Cayman is a beautiful design but the top-down capability of the Boxster adds an emotional edge you won’t find on the Cayman.
The passenger seat belt buckle knocking against the interior plastics is something that VW has solved by sewing a loop of the belt material on the belt. It acts as a buckle stop and there's that loop of belt between the buckle and the interior plastics, so the buckle can't knock against the plastics. Ingenious.
This is vintage Sam. Love this video. Music on point too. I was a bit worried over the last few weeks that your videos weren't really up to your standards. But Sam's back baby
Something is off with this channel. It seems, like Paul SOL, he hasn't really adapted to the changing trends and is slowly being left behind. Shame because ive followed him from the beginning. Sam if you are reading this, you are playing it too safe.
That wrap is the BEST colour I’ve seen on any car ever! Love the Cayman in green. I’ve currently got a 981 in racing yellow and just about to trade for a 718 in carbine red, I’d defo consider that wrap though!
Thank you for the review. I'm no longer considering this car, but will stretch the finances to get a proper 911. I've haven't owned a new one in ages ('87 930) and expect to be properly blown away ;-)
Great review, really like the amount of detail you’ve included. I’ve been hesitant about the controversy behind the 4cyl but you look like you don’t seem to mind. I’m feeling convinced. The wrap is a very classy touch, well done. Matt
Just got 42mpg average over 200 miles from my Cayman T yesterday, wasn't even driving "slow" either. Too late now of course as this car is long gone, but for anyone that ever sees this, the passenger seat belt has a little slide clip on it. You just slide that up and hold the buckle still at the top and it doesn't rattle.
Lovely video summing up the Cayman. I think objectively it's a much more capable car than the 981 and the fact that you're using it so much is a testament to how good it is. You always hear people say how usable sports and supercars are these days but rarely will you ever see someone using them on a daily basis so I love that you're doing exactly that. And maybe it's not a car you're ever going to adore on the same level as your 360 for example but I do think there's another side to the Cayman that you're maybe yet to explore so I'd be totally happy with you keeping it for another 6 months or so, it's definitely one of my favourite cars that you've owned and that I've been most interested in.
Wow I cant wait for mine to come in I purchase the 718 Cayman S 2021 Today and arrives on 1/15/21 after watching your video no the waiting is going to be longer. Thanks for all the info.
I live on the road and have worked in most of the major cities of the US. As such, a lightweight car with adequate power with a dash of sportiness is perfect. Fuel economy is important and of course insurance costs matter as well. So in some ways, this car is perfect for me. As it is, I drive a BMW M2. It has a rough ride but it fits the bill as well. If I was settled down then a regular high-performance car might be okay but the extra weight and expense might be tough to accept. To summarize, the 718 is not for everybody but for the right people, it would be a joy.
I have the same issue with my passenger seat belt rattling UNTIL I discovered the clip on the belt. Raise it right up the top so it keeps the clip at the very top and then doesn't rattle :-)
Great vid, I've had mine for 16 months and its AMAZING! Miami blue ;) The exhaust note isn't great but its much better in real life trust me people turn their heads when I start it up or rev it. SAM: The seat belt I was told about when buying, you simply push it to the top and its fine. Mine has rattles too! I got one fixed, something in the back panel work. Other one comes from parcel shelf, just tighten it up, it gets loose. And a bit of squeak from the seat adjuster near my shoulder. BUT then I get into my friends cars and theirs sound like cheap plastic rattling everywhere so we're just being perfectionists haha
the "rattles" could also be from your partial disassembly while wrapping it, ... also, this "4 cylinder turbo charged" engine is for emissions, you know this global warming thing and such, ..! :-/
Turbo engines generally produce more emissions under acceleration and use more gas when compared to a NA engine. I think the main reason they used it is for packaging and torque.
"In gasoline engines, turbocharging enables downsizing which improves fuel economy by 5-20%." www.sae.org/learn/content/wb1018/ " Using a smaller, turbocharged engine can reduce fuel consumption by 2 to 6% for equal vehicle performance, saving you money and reducing your impact on the environment." www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy/efficiency/transportation/cars-light-trucks/buying/16747
2.5's real consumption is over the 3.4 during a test drive. I experienced it physically. The only improvement of consumption is on stable speed on motorway. Great. But we don't buy a Porsche for motorway.
I agree, the passenger seatbelt can make a noise, but if you slide the retaining clip up it stops it. I also find that with the driver's window down you get a lot of buffeting at speed. Apart from that, I love my Cayman! :)
... i should add I drive an 11 year old 987 boxster... but i added a Remus exhaust and it transformed the engine note, I love the sound and could happily keep the car till I die... the noise gave me that tingle that made all the difference. it's no way near as fast as yours but it's not all about speed in my book.
Great video Sam...have watched all your stuff as I am due to collect my new 718 Cayman next Tuesday...Guards Red...sports exhaust and 20" Carrera S black alloys. Can't wait. After a BMW 440i M-Sport thought I would like a change. Waiting to see what you do about the exhaust note!!! Cheers
Finally got around to test drives at the local dealer. Tried a pdk S and manual GTS. Plenty of power and it did not sound as horrible inside as it does driving by. But the turbo lag just saps the car of its essential goodness. This platform has always been defined by its responsiveness to driver input. Prefer any of the previous versions, or a 996 for that matter.
Hi Sam, thanks for the nice overview. Everything shows that the Cayman S is a practical car. The petrol consumption is pleasantly low, but not exceptionally low. It is not yet comparable with my fuel consumption in a 124 Spider 170 BHP. On a long trip through central Europe my consumption is around 45 mpg (petrol RON 98). And the 124 Spider also sounds a lot better than the Porsche. But you also make it clear to the viewer that in those 10,000 mls you have not built up an emotional bond with this car. I am looking forward to your next Daily Driver.
Got rid of all the rattles in mine. It was a rattlefest before. Experience with changing all the audio in my college days cars paid off. The passenger seatbelt. Use foam on both sides. Trim the foam to shape. Make it look neat 👌
I have one piece of advice if you plan on ordering one of these. Get the smokers package, it puts a cover on that hole in the lower console by your elbow and its $0. It just finishes off that part nice and I have no idea why its an option, it should just be on all 718s.My 718S is to be here this May and cant wait to get it on a track. And give my old (1984) 911 a rest from thrashing
Sam, I got one of the last 981 Caymans about 18 months ago, and like you use it as a daily. After 23K Miles it is still amazing just how good it is at being a car. If I were you I be sure to drive it some on a warm dry roads over the spring and summer because during fall and winter it is hard to use the sports part of a modern Porsche. I am a hold and keep type of driver and this one will likely be in my possession for a very long time, since it is nice to have a small light car that can do anything.
One of these days you're going to have to make a trip to the Nurburgring in that Porsche and get some good instruction laps. I have no doubt that will give you a full perspective on its abilities and allow you to really enjoy the car. Granted, I have heard issues with UK insurance there, but I wouldn't doubt you could find a rental company there who would exchange a rental and an instructed lap for some good exposure. Anyway, food for thought and content I would like to see. I can't remember the last time I didn't enjoy the content you post. Keep up the good work!
Maybe get the 360 shipped down to Top Marques, drive the 718 down via some Swiss alpine roads, then use the 360 while you're there, before shipping them both home.
I just bought a 2018 Cayman S two weeks ago and put in just over 500 miles. I really love it. My first Cayman S was 2008 model then a 2012 Cayman R. I replaced the "little brother Porsche" with a 2015 Carrera with Aerokit package, PDK and Sport Chrono. After almost four years, I replaced it with the new 2018 Cayman S again with Sport Chrono and PDK. The Cayman S with all the performance options is definitely faster and handle better than the 2015 Carrera and the most important factor, it is US$35,000 cheaper!! The 4 cylinder Turbo charge engine is magnificent and I don't feel turbo lag at all. The mid engine configuration does provide great handling and has much better mileage than the Carrera. It is the perfect sport car for daily driving. Highly recommended.
That's the thing about modern Porsche cars, they are competent as all heck and absolutely as capable as you will ever need a sports car to be. But maybe they are lacking a little bit in emotion because they are so buttoned down and efficient at what they do. Still, great review Sam. I appreciate your work.
Enjoyed this update. As you pointed out Sam, it would be great to see the 718 after some track action, and a nice winding roads European drive. Look forward to those videos!.
Awesome! Thanks for this great video and insight into the Cayman S as a daily. I really love them and am really interested in getting one so videos like this are great information to have. Cheers
Obviously he is a car youtuber, and to keep his channel interesting, he needs to swap cars. Although the Cayman is a freakin' good car, there are better cars out there!
I don't think you understand how much money TH-camrs make. A general amount is $2 per thousand views, although some have way higher cpm and some have less but being as Sam is highly family friendly I'd say it's on the high side. Especially if they're smart about how they approach sponsorships and brand deals. Sam seems like an intelligent guy, so I'm sure he's smart about his finances. If you think about financing cars, a few thousand dollars/pounds probably doesn't have a massive impact on his revenue every month.
Great cars I’ve owned Boxter and Boxter S, fantastic cars around town and both used on long European tours. Also with Boxters you can get the sunshine!
Nice vid Sam, great execution and on point. Good to have feedback on daily use as my 718 GTS arrive in mid April and cannot wait. It will be my daily as well, though I will take it out for Sunday drives to unlock the real sports car element to the motor. Keep up the enjoyable vids.
OMFG, YES to th’seatbelt battering against the passenger side, Sir! I’m genuinely aggrieved and sad to see they haven’t sorted that out! Baxter’ gets right on my fricken wick! He is forgiven however, for being oh so super, squat’n’saucy! ;) In related news: Bax is a 2014 S with Chrono, and we’ve currently done just over 15,000 together - the fuel economy I find staggeringly good for what he is (450 miles a tank if ridden soft like an Eeyore, hardly half that if I’m galloping along like I’m Shadowfax), so I TOTALLY felt you during your rhapsody at that! I was like, “Yes YES! Aren’t they, though!”. I enjoy driving pretty much anything with an engine, so I’d love to have a play in the 718 for its drive and handling (interested in what the shifts feel like in this comparably via paddle, due to the switch to turbo), as well as the increase in mpg and whether it feels like a worthy trade from the six cylinder in daily life as a ‘road car sports car’ type thang of an experience! Having a nose for its’ ‘MmmOOFishness’, any lover of this road-smoochin’ manufacturer knows - seems to go without saying; Porsche pretty much full stop demands my attention aesthetically, irrelevant of the model, colour etc (or potential moron driving it! And also for these brackets... good grief and go you on that colour - it’s absolutely delicious 😋). Mostly I’m intrigued after knowing Bax this long, one of his successor’ feels like just to be in, inside the cab tootling along on a journey. I can’t say I aren’t equally intrigued to know, if the cup holders that scare the shite out of me every time I ‘click’ them (click? You call that a ‘click’, Porsche? Cos I call it a scary-ass fucking CLACK!) out to use them, has been softened somewhat 😬😂😂😂 Y’video was awesome...thank you, thankyooow! 😁👌🏼 I hope you continue to enjoy your Cayman if you have still have it 😁
Install Gentoo Lots available second hand, base 981 caymans are hitting low £30k, good spec 981 cayman S are holding their money much like the 981 cayman GTS’s (high £40k up to £60k)
It's not about the speed with the Cayman, I always compare it to my old rover mini, they are great cars to throw around a bend. Straight lines are boring.
With respect I haven't been a fan of your videos or any of the you tubers that you frequent, not a dig at you guys just not my style. This video however was very good, actually a nice bit of motoring journalism. Well done. Oh and that colour on the 718 complements the car so well.

Prefer any of the previous versions, or a 996 for that matter.
You always have the best music in your videos!!!
Love how you filmed this one, the cinematography felt a cut above the average vlog
I am looking forward to your next Daily Driver.
a few WHAT on the interior???? 5:34
8:41 he said it again so you wouldn't forget
Quality video mate; love the summary at the end.
It’s the best 718 review
you have it parked in the mud (5:40). What's up with that color???
God I love that color.
If you push back up passenger seatbelt to the top next to the facia it clips into place and stops movement, designed to perfection.
0:01, The sound of a burping beetle.
First video of yours that I have watch and subscribed. Will be looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Another great review, made all the better that it's your daily. Thanks for making constantly great content 👍
Nice video Sam. Great to get some facts about the car too.
4th - great edits, short, sharp, snappy. Jolly good
Track it! Track it!!
great video. love the different shot angles
Love my GTS. Everything that you mentioned about your S I have noticed too! Spot on video.
camerawork on point Sam!
That's the thing about modern Porsche cars, they are competent as all heck and absolutely as capable as you will ever need a sports car to be. But maybe they are lacking a little bit in emotion because they are so buttoned down and efficient at what they do. Still, great review Sam. I appreciate your work.
Had delivery of the first GTS 718, start of the year. Much recommended :-)
absolutely PERFECT car. i just cant get over the engine note though :(
Another cool vid, looking forward to the road trips. A+
Have to say, love your content and your music selection is absolute fire!!!!
Cheers
You’ll sell this within 3 months… You don’t seem to be too crazy about it, Sam
Yeah I felt like he was digging for excuses to get rid of it...
Obviously he is a car youtuber, and to keep his channel interesting, he needs to swap cars. Although the Cayman is a freakin' good car, there are better cars out there!
seems pointless for these car vloggers to buy cars since they fly around all the time and test drive tons of cars.
A few videos ago he said he’s looking at getting the new vanquish as a replacement
Great video once again Sam. It’s been a while since I last commented.
Didn't realise it was Crayon underneath, get that bloody wrap off - Crayon is mega!
x o also he paid extra for that color lmao
Nice vid Sam, great execution and on point. Good to have feedback on daily use as my 718 GTS arrive in mid April and cannot wait. It will be my daily as well, though I will take it out for Sunday drives to unlock the real sports car element to the motor. Keep up the enjoyable vids.
Man you really NEED to take this cayman to track or a nice mountain road because the way it goes into corners is insane thanks to its mid engine !
You need to take it on the A85 from St Fillans - Lockearnhead. I fell in love with my Boxster S on that road. Sunny day, no traffic, perfect!
Great car!
Cos I call it a scary-ass fucking CLACK!) out to use them, has been softened somewhat 😬😂😂😂
Y’video was awesome...thank you, thankyooow! 😁👌🏼 I hope you continue to enjoy your Cayman if you have still have it 😁
Love the cayman 718 looks. But would have to get the 981 GTS over it.
Joe Harris Is the 981 completely sold out? Are there still new 981s out there? In dealerships or factory?
Install Gentoo Lots available second hand, base 981 caymans are hitting low £30k, good spec 981 cayman S are holding their money much like the 981 cayman GTS’s (high £40k up to £60k)
I agree. My 981 GTS sounds so much better and even though its slower than the 718 that n/a flat 6 is so much more fun especially with my 6M.
It's not about the speed with the Cayman, I always compare it to my old rover mini, they are great cars to throw around a bend. Straight lines are boring.
i'm a month late but I just bought a 981 boxster GTS two months ago. Trust me, loads available. You will not regret it if you get one
With respect I haven't been a fan of your videos or any of the you tubers that you frequent, not a dig at you guys just not my style. This video however was very good, actually a nice bit of motoring journalism. Well done. Oh and that colour on the 718 complements the car so well.
I‘m enjoying my Cayman, too. It‘s not an 911, and I think that I should switch back… but then it feels just RIGHT with the Cayman.
I loved the way you filmed this video you always do film very well but particularly good on this vid 👍
Good video Sam love your Porsche
Love the color!
