For everyone wondering, the reason the original sprites look so strange compared to the official designs is because the official artwork of the Pokémon hadn’t been drawn yet. After the game was released, Ken Sugimori finally drew the official artwork for all the monsters, and then Yellow’s sprites were made to reflect the final designs
Okay, hottest take on the planet: Golbat's Pokémon Blue sprite... is actually GOOD. It actually shows what Golbat is invisioned to be: this nasty-looking abomination that jumps you in dank caves
The transition on some of them between red and blue look like they were just posed in different ways, it's cool that despite the sprites not being so good, they kept some of the aspects like dodrio's scary black eyes
the pokemon green clefable is really good but looks more skinny, also the pokemon blue muk is just amazing, actually looks like a sludge monster that wants to eat you
I find it fascinating how many Pokémon have their eyes change between R/G/B and Yellow. It makes the older sprites seem almost like beta versions of the actual Pokémon
Yeah, but it wouls be too close to reality and if you spin that on, in an anime/movie this would look horrifying to little children. And that's the target group.
My brother and I, when we were kids, always liked to compare which sprite looked better. I had blue and he had yellow. Blastoise: Yellow, Haunter: Blue and so on.
i beat pokemon yellow for the first time yesterday which was my first kanto game. it was really cool and the difficulty level was interestingly different from how it is now. the yellow sprite in all these are like them finally making up their minds on what they want the pokemon to look like lol
Looking "right" and looking interesting or dynamic are entirely different things though. A lot of the older sprites had different appeals in their own right.
The dirt on digglet's sprite shows the change in talent best imo, in yellow it is actually a mound of dirt, in the previous versions it is just a mess of dark pixels not even trying to form an image
Some sprites were great from the get-go, and I'd say a few become worse, but the vast majority of them portray an image so much better in yellow versions that it doesn't even look like they have the same resolution
It's cool to see the art style go through a revision for the English release, featuring more dynamic poses, and then again for Yellow Version with a flatter art style to mimic the anime.
@@zetazimmer4769the graphics used in the international release of red/blue were the ones used in the Japanese blue version, which made numerous changes to basically everything, not just the battle sprites. Some of the few things carried over from Japanese red/green are the encounter tables and (I think) the graphics for the slot machine in red. Yellow is unaffected by these shenanigans, so both Japanese and international yellow is effectively the same game with a different language
I know for the most part theyre the worst but I still think the O.G red and green have the best sprites of the gen 1 games for some pokemon. Specifically I mean Blastoise, Fearow, Nidorina, Parasect, Electrode, Weezing, Magmar, Porygon, Snorlax and Mewtwo
At 1:42, 5:36, and 5:45, I never knew Earthquake, Rhino, and Kango looked like that back then. I only had Pokemon Stadium 1 for the N64 and I never knew these Pokemon which were my favorites looked like that back then.
the red/blue versions of Charizard and Dragonite look so much better than every other gen. they look genuinely tough and intimidating, rather than chubby plush toys like the other games
I'm so glad Ivysaur & Venusaur got a design overhaul in Japanese Blue/American + European Red & Blue. Sure it was based on the Beta designs, but i can't imagine what artists might've thought about those designs.
Nidoqueen from Japanese Red/Green however, was also lifted straight from the Beta versions from 1993-1994 Those early Beta designs are... Worse than what we got
the yellow sprites r actually kinda alright but i would genuinely take most of red & green's over blue & yellow's, theyre so goofy, i can hardly imagine gen 1 w/o them
I feel some of the older sprites are more serious and intimidating like kingler in blue and dragonite. Some of the yellow sprites definitely look better like flamara but i think pokemon should stay a bit more darker like in the first gens
I kind of wish that they would make 10th gen done in the retro-style graphics. I miss the nostalgic Blue Version graphics. I know it would probably not be an overly popular decision, but having the newest gen done in the graphic style of the first games would be pretty cool. Also, does anyone else hate the fact Dugtrio doesn't look angry anymore?
To be completely honest, Yellows sprites are alright, but too many are just victims of the R/G backsprites still being used along with there just being less shading, even noticable on the old Gameboy. I think Red/Green actually has a lot of good sprites like Porygon, Mewtwo and Blastoise in the areas where Blue has worse sprites like Fattoise, Cloyster and Koffing If the Spaceworld '97 backsprites got used for Blue/International Red it would've been perfectly matching
The sprite from nidoqueen and nidoking was in the blue edition better. And the colors from raichuis in red/green/blau correct, but in yellow is ot yellow and not orange. The rest is in yellow better. The sprites from red/green/blue has a nostalgic vaipe.

Weird that some sprites like Koffing, Exeggcute, and Cloyster were correct in Japanese Red and Green and then off-model in Blue.

Thanks bro. They dont know the nostalgia
@@FinalConsensusyes, that’s the main reason, also the anime had better depictions of sugimori’s designs

Yellow is weird because they only updated the front sprites. If the backsprites were updated it would have been awesome.

Fire and Green putting an emphasis on the "Monster" rather than the "Pocket".
The transition on some of them between red and blue look like they were just posed in different ways, it's cool that despite the sprites not being so good, they kept some of the aspects like dodrio's scary black eyes
Some of them even feel like they could be animated like in Emerald and Gen 4.
the pokemon green clefable is really good but looks more skinny, also the pokemon blue muk is just amazing, actually looks like a sludge monster that wants to eat you

Moltres especially
Like, it went from normal eyes, to black beety eyes, and then back to normal eyes again?
A very unpopular opinion:
I love the original Mew Sprite
I think it looks exactly what a weird embryo like creature should look like
*bulbous*
Agreed!
Yeah, but it wouls be too close to reality and if you spin that on, in an anime/movie this would look horrifying to little children. And that's the target group.

Golbats ‘blue’ sprite is something of nightmares 😆
So much nostalgia seeing all these old sprites, from a bored child to cherishing Pokémon right through to present day.
2:20 I actually like Parasect's Red/Green/Blue design more than the Yellow one.
There’s something so fascinating and unique about JP R/G that cannot ever be replicated.
Is nobody gonna talk about How Lapras looks creepy in the japanese pokemon green
Yellow definitely has the best sprites. Many of the original sprites don’t even look like the Pokémon that we know and love. Most look deformed.
yes, because the sprites are made before the artwork
No, blue have the best sprites

@RepLasagna That's just...obviously false
The English Red and blue games were based on the Japanese pokemon blue which came out a couple of months after red and green

It's weird how in some versions, the originals actually had better sprites than either Blue or Yellow, Porygon being the obvious example.

They really made a perfect Fearow sprite in green and kept downgrading it.
Nostalgia ❤
Also Omastar looks like it’s dancing
I love Pokémon green sprites because they match the artwork of ken sugimori
Golbat’s sprite is so f*cking horrifying my goodness
1:57 what did they do to my baby 😭😭😭
Tbf the sprites should be horizontally flipped because thats how you actually encounter the pokemons in battle.
In the blue part the Golbat sprite looks like...GOOFY AHHHHH GOLBAT 2:06 😂😂😂😂
so true xD
Exeggutor reuses the same yellow Pokémon sprite in all the 2nd generation games
Except Pokémon Silver
Not gonna lie, the old Ninetales sprite is pretty cool.
the red/blue versions of Charizard and Dragonite look so much better than every other gen. they look genuinely tough and intimidating, rather than chubby plush toys like the other games
VULPIX original sprite is so silly and cute 😭💕💕
Its true❤️😍
Vulpix’s red and green sprite looks much more like it’s cut pre evolution, neat
Ekans was fuckin' POGGING in red and green
idc what u say, the red/green diglett, dugtrio, gastly, pikachu, raichu, and tangela sprites look so off in a cute way
I'm so glad Ivysaur & Venusaur got a design overhaul in Japanese Blue/American + European Red & Blue.

Nidorina actually looks good on all 4 versions surprisingly since it kept it's consistency
Same goes for Nidorino
Nidoqueen from Japanese Red/Green however, was also lifted straight from the Beta versions from 1993-1994
Those early Beta designs are... Worse than what we got
Clefable kept it's consistency too
Cloyster has it's Beta smile and shape left intact
Ghastly is also Beta-like, Same for Japanese Red/Green Gengar
For Alakazam, the Japanese sprite has a star on the forehead.
Eventually, Kadabra had a star on it’s forehead.

@@Mermaozin_da_explosion no 😅
the reason why the yellow sprites are so much better is because the sprites in yellow were made after the anime started

The back sprites didn’t change across any of the versions lol
Jigglypuff has seen some stuff
To be completely honest, Yellows sprites are alright, but too many are just victims of the R/G backsprites still being used along with there just being less shading, even noticable on the old Gameboy.

Not only that, but its a mixed vag when it comes to poses and some look like a mess due to anti-alasing
You know, with alot of the Green to Blue sprites the only difference is the pose. 🤔
thats right :D
7:20 The old Dratini sprites had more detail on the scales
I believe Ken's original idea was that Dratini, despite being a reptile, would have the smooth skin of a dolphin.
I cant believe fat dratini got taken away from us just like that 😭
