@@Calvansbagoftricks It's alright, but it felt like the spriter gave up halfway. A lot of the beginning Pokémon are colored real nice, but then a lot of the late-game stuff is pretty shoddy.
Tbh I really like the gastly lines early design, but seeing them i color... i can understand why they changed the design, its the only one I feel got worse when you add color
This is a lot like those colorized vintage photographs and videos, where at first you feel this disconnect due to the lack of color, but then once it's added you're like "oh yeah, these were real people/Pokémon"
This is incredible! It's just a simple idea with a huge effect. I never thought about something like that. Shut up and take my money! I want this as a mod for the old games or as a remake with the style of Octopath Traveler.
5:27 The jewels that Staryu and Starmie have weren't supposed to be so dark, they probably used black to make it contrast better. But honestly... The dark jewel with the red shine looks so much cooler! Its color reminds me of a yemeni agate.
These automatically makes most of them look like Gen3 sprites and that's crazy. Also, double Big Meaty Claws Kingler, pissed off Gyarados and IMMA CUT YA Scyther are dope ass sprites.
I noticed the only thing separating these sprites from feeling like actual gen 3 sprites is that these recolors still have a lot of dark lines and dark areas that look jarring in full color. Like onix has the REALLY black planes on its body. They're very heavy in a visual sense and it brings me out of it. It also makes me hyper aware of what exactly makes gen 1 sprites kinda cursed. Like I can't help but notice that there are similarities between the sprite work of marowak and the machop line. There's a lot of doughy-ness to the drawing. Some look unfinished clay figures in full color.
These are sooo good! I always loved the og sprites best and seeing them in color confirms that they hold up, and in many cases beat out the newer ones that have come out over the years. Thanks for putting in the work to show us these!
Amazing Work. Really interesting to see this kind of perspective on the older Pokémon designs, color seems to spark new life into them. Especially the OG Porygon sprite. XD
So many of these go from looking wack to being normal or even awesome just by adding color! A few of them felt like straight nerfs though. The Ghastly line and Snorlax imo looked better the way they were. Also Seaking looks kinda crazy 😅 But this was so cool to see
I first played yellow, while they had a little different color alteration to them if they ran this up, I'd run that game right back. The color scheme makes this adapt to the newer gen feel
These look amazing. The difference is astounding. Not that you could save Marowak, Golbat and the Machop line anyway, but at least you tried. Although I prefer the uncolored Ghastly line, they look way scarier than in newer versions and I loved that as a kid.
I did this myself to a handfull of them like 10 years ago, I specifically remember having done Blastoise, which is why this video caught my eye, I was shocked by how good these sprites actually looked in full colour. This brings back so many memories (especially as I lost the ones I did when my old laptop died, on second guess, it might have been 15 years ago, time flies), amazing to see all of them done this time around. Great video. Are you planning in doing Johto as well?
Same here! It was around 2004 I think, sometime before FRLG. I recently discovered the Internet and found out I could see these sprites without playing the game, so my curiosity was led in the same direction, trying to revamp the old sprites. So many hours lost on MS Paint on my parents' computer...
This feels right. The color really brings out the detail in a lot of these and now I wish there was a mod where the Gen 1 games were this colorful (no shade towards how they play on the gbc)
I still remember the nostalgia of going into the safari zone just trying to catch kangaskhan and chansey in Blue, which you either Had to throw bait or rocks at them both lol
If a fan version used GBA colors across the board that would be rad. These are great, with the exception of the Gengar line. Something about those sit really well in the og b&w for me.
What’s crazy about this video is that it shows that our brains did a lot of the heavy lifting. Intellectually I know the sprites never looked like this, but they look like what I remember them like.
It is amazing how the color makes them feel so much closer to thw new designs while keeping the Gen1 charm.
The colors really bring out shading the originals already had. Just didn’t pop as much in noir.
Absolutly
New design? Huh
@@Carl_McMelvin What seems to be your confusion, fren?
It goes to show that the sprites weren't that bad as people tend to think
This feels like the type of video I would watch in youtube as a kid multiple times back in 2010, I love it
it does really have that early youtube feel to it
For real
I hate zoomers so fucking much
I would love to see a couple towns coloured in like this. Well done!
Prob like in Gen 2 Kanto region
I love how with minor edits and some colour a lot of these original red and blue sprites go from acceptable to good.
Onix being completely unchanged got a chuckle out of me
Dewgong was largely the same too.
And Rhyhorn too
Onix was peak pokemon design since the beginning that's why
Ratata
Onix is like when on Jan 1 I say "new year new me" then I proceed to be the same shit
Those look fantastic. There's no saving the Machop line though, lol
1:16 The coloured gen 1 sprite for Nidoking looks amazing, the best he’s ever looked
It's funny how adding color to some of them makes them look way better, while for others the derpiness can't be contained no matter what
Gen 1 Golbat was absolutely terrifying
women love him
@@3DHDcat💀
Molester Golbat is best Golbat
>_>
Wow. I'd love to see a pokemon red/blue rom hack that colorizes the game. That'd be incredible see
There actually is one out there. Gym leader Matt uses it.
I think that’s already been done.
@@Calvansbagoftricks It's alright, but it felt like the spriter gave up halfway. A lot of the beginning Pokémon are colored real nice, but then a lot of the late-game stuff is pretty shoddy.
There is but it uses the gen 2 sprites
There's one of fire red that uses the gen 1 sprites but colored it's called super nostalgia edition
Genuinely astonishing how using the Pokémon Blue sprites, but coloured, really brings them all to life that little bit more. Lovely work.
It's just the lack of color that makes some of them look uncanny, this is pretty amazing.
Growing up with red and blue, I thought so many looked awful, even as a kid. It’s amazing how adding color shows the sprites aren’t bad.
Nidoran♂️ actually looks bad
@@patonosequecosathere's alot better examples than nidoran. That's a random one to call out looks alright
Red&Blue is kind of a shit game but it's sprites are overhated.
Tbh I really like the gastly lines early design, but seeing them i color... i can understand why they changed the design, its the only one I feel got worse when you add color
The Machop evolution line is also awful.
Damn these are actually really expressive with the color. Who would've thought it was just the monochrome making them derpy
Omastar is still hilarious
What a difference just a colour palette alone can make. What an awesome video thank you so much
I never realized Squirtle was smiling. He’s so happy, I love him
Till now i thought it was a shadow on it's face
Onix colored in is especially stunning
It's so cool what a fresh coat of paint did to change the overall tone of the Gen 1 sprites
The coloring is done well enough that many of these COULD be Gen3 sprites. Fantastic job.

I would like everyone to appreciate how INCREDIBLY dope that Tentacruel is
This is a lot like those colorized vintage photographs and videos, where at first you feel this disconnect due to the lack of color, but then once it's added you're like "oh yeah, these were real people/Pokémon"

Shiny colors on gen 1 sprites would be dope, cool concept love it!
A lot of these are still genuinely excellent sprites. I'd say there still hasn't been a better Gyarados since the one shown here.
Hgss has the best Gyarados sprite
@@Freezerboy69 Personally my second favorite, so fair argument.
@@robopiplup5193 that's fair, I do think the rb Gyarados is up there as one of the better sprites as well.

New challenge unlocked: back sprites
Make it so, Number One.
Without the color added, I always assumed that Golbat had humanesque lips. I still can’t unsee that, despite the color.
Horrifying.
As a Gen 1 veteran, this is rather satisfying to watch, knowing how limited the original Pokemon games were.
Unreal to see how good the OG designs look with the proper coloring

This video is awesome. It shows that most of those old sprites aren't as bad as the lack of detailed color makes them look.
Amazing Work. Really interesting to see this kind of perspective on the older Pokémon designs, color seems to spark new life into them. Especially the OG Porygon sprite. XD
I grew up with old school gen 1 and like the classic black & white. I still play gen 1 to this day

A few of them felt like straight nerfs though. The Ghastly line and Snorlax imo looked better the way they were. Also Seaking looks kinda crazy 😅
But this was so cool to see
I actually think Ghastly and Gengar look decent enough, but Haunter looks so weirdly goofy with the diffrent contrast...
Now I want a full-color mod of R/B/Y. I never knew how much the technical limitations of the GameBoy really held this game back in terms of beauty.
I'm surprised there hasn't been one. It would be such a cool way to revisit the retro style.
Wow, thanks for this. Something I never thought I wanted but very interesting to watch. Gives a great deal of appreciation for gameboy advance color.

Was holding my breath and shaking in my boots waiting for Dewgong's turn, my god what a drastic change in color
The changes made to Dewgong and Onix are amazing!
Blastoise, Rapidash, and Dragonite look stunning and intimidating!
It's amazing how much this helps the off model ones
It's kinda crazy seeing that Generation 3 isn't THAT much of a gap. The color makes a lot of these great.

Sprite revamping was a very fun activity back in the day
Red and Blue have my favorite sprites, the designs look very natural and carefully shaded, it's pure art.
I can’t be the only one who thinks this music goes hard
magikarp and gyarados actually look really good. could be sprites from gen 4
I wouldn’t be mad if they did a remake with gen1 sprites recolored
I think the only downgrade was the ghost pokemon, I think they looked better without colour, but this fantastic! They look sm more lively!
Griner and muk look amazing, their sprites are really well done compared to the rest
Didn't realize that kabutos sprite even looked like that until now 🤯
This helps me engage with these designs waaay better.

Colour really makes the legendary birds stand out as distinct from one another. Black and white theyre just busy.

There are rom hacks that do this, except with GBC pallet. Colorizes the overworld too. It really breathes life into the game.
I want to thank you friend this is amazing I'll always cherish gen 1
A dash of color goes a long way.
The golbat, upside down koffing and fat pikachu sprite always gets me 😂😂😂
Looking better already
I miss when pokemon was a pixel art game series
I waited 20+ years for this.
It’s funny how this has a similar vibe to colourising old black and white photos
I love the gen1 sprites
Pidgey has seen things man… things you couldn’t comprehend…
The old krabby sprite looks like his Corphish family admitted to them being adopted 🦀🦞🦞
I think some of these sprites look better then some of the gba sprites, but ofc there are always some odd ones in there.
Im surprised at how many of these i like, even when i dont care for the base sprite. Kudos!
Very beautiful !!!!!! 😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Holy shit after all these years THATS what Bulbasaur’s eye were supposed to look like? I legit thought they were closed like Brock’s!
That Gen 1 Mewtwo sprite is still undefeated.
I like how some like Muk, Scyther, and Gyarados look better than the actual gen 3 sprites, and then you have Poliwrath
A gba rom hack with these would be pretty cool
They gave me as a souvenir to the graphic design of earthbound xd
Nicely done! Would love to see shiny variants in the same style :)
I've always loved Charizard's and Dragonite's sprites from these games.
Meowth looked incredible with a little color
