  • This time on Knucklehead Garage we are finally hitting pay dirt on Project Towverlander our 7.3 Excursion Overland vehicle build. We have outfitted the Diesel Excursion overland vehicle with some of the best overlanding stuff you can buy and will be driving this 1 ton beast 5000 miles from Atlanta, Georgia to Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and back. This will be the ultimate overlander test with an epic mix of trail riding and camping. For this episode we are hitting Pike's Peak before hitting some trails on our way to camp and take the biggest SUV ever made down the treacherous Black Bear Pass off road trail in Colorado. We might try to do it in 2wd just to prove how capable the Overland Excursion build is. We can't believe how much fun overlanding Colorado can be. Stay tuned for part 2 as we do some hardcore wheeling in Moab, Utah and push Jamin way outside of his comfort zone. You do not want to miss this!

    Great video. As someone who lives here and is familiar with that terrain in a 7.3 F350, I can confirm that using 4X4, even when you don't think you "need" it, has three major benefits in this order: 1 MUCH smoother ride overall; 2 Keeps the trails from getting torn up from sliding rear wheels up or down over loose rock; 3 Provides better control/safety while crawling down over steps - especially around corners.

Cant get into the overhead tent, disabled (USMC/USAF) and would make it even worse if I had to piss in the middle of the night. Looks like a great trip and seeing some stuff you probably wouldn’t have seen without a well built rig to get you there. Kinda confused if the excursion was built to take “overlanding” purely to make fun of overlanding, or it was built for the same purpose most people build an overland rig which is to have a vehicle that gets you places most couldn’t go. I understand that you did it in 2 wheel drive, but i don’t think anyone would take a bone stock 2 wheel drive excursion over BBP. The 20 k worth of suspension under that thing did its job well.

    • @freedomworx
      @freedomworx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Built to Overland. Not a joke. Matt wasn’t sure about the Overland thing… I converted him with the Excursion. And no, I’m not advocating that anyone do BBP in a stock 2wd. We had lots of clearance, KM3, and 6300lbs on the rear tires. Plenty of grip.

    • @freedomworx

      I could see where you might come to that conclusion. But we just like to joke. Most hardcore off-roaders “Overland” with as Jeep Cherokee, Coleman Tent, and a bottle of cheap whiskey. I like creature comforts.

      @@freedomworx i thought that i was catching the mood of the video correct, but to be up front, I haven’t gotten to watch the build out fully, or know the backstory. I’m sure I’ve missed a ton of context so my bad if the comment seemed “overlandy”. I live in ATL, have a jeep that i tent camp out of, and a GX470 that i built for out west trips. Build for the conditions you’re going to be in. I love that excursion build and even though BBP isn’t technically that difficult. If you’re a guy from out east looking over those switch backs for the first time, its a different kind of uncomfortable and excitement.

I can put 3 tons in the bed lol. Considering plopping a gigantic camper on it with storage lockers on the sides. Can you dually swap it so you dont blow a tire in the wilderness on those rough roads? At least run F weight range tires... Nobody realizes a gasser can actually haul more weight safely. And ive run the math they cost the same to drive with much less gasser maintenace and probably half the sticker price. Stock theyre pretty close on torque but the V10 makes a good amount more ponies on the top end. It goes 85mph no problem and itll yank a tank too. Those admiring this dudes rig should not sleep on a v10. Especially the 2 valve version for reliability. You can carry a spark plug repair kit if youre scared. Its not too hard even in the field.

      @@freedomworx I ran it in a built up 99 F-150 and about 50 other Colorado and Moab trails. Jeeps and Toyotas will give you a look when your in a truck on the trails. Sometimes even ask you if you know what's above and below like you can't handle it. They almost want to say what are you doing on these trails ??
      My answer is kicking your ass. I built my rig part for part over many years. I run tons of trails year around and have done way more than most so called built Jeeps in Colorado. Many trails I seen people bailing off but the big Ole F-150 goes to the top and down the other side.

    This rig is bad ass. The build series was very entertaining. Also that is the best sounding 7.3 I have heard. Usually they sound super lazy in my opinion.
